- Time for another home theater update! My JTR sub is awesome but I want more evenly distributed bass. I think I'm going to build 4 of these Dayton Audio 18" subwoofers for the room. Watch the video to see me assemble this kit from start to finish & also watch and learn from my mistakes.

So glad you left your mistakes in the video. As a DIY'er myself, I know that projects most often don't go as planned or even end up perfect. Such is life. Great Job, regardless.
oh yeah, it's literally all mistakes until we get it right! embracing the chaos in making things is brilliant; it makes for better projects with each iteration!
@@ezhik01 exactly right, but that's how we learn, and then we don't make those same mistakes the next time!
That has to be the cleanest, most organized garage I have ever seen. Nice
you prolly dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can watch pretty much all the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my gf during the lockdown =)
@Wells Memphis yup, have been using InstaFlixxer for years myself :)
Channel name checks out
@@BenTheGuitarMan doesn’t it though

This is how most of my DIY projects go. Gotta love the process, and not lose patience. Thanks for being a humble dude too. Well done!
Me personally I'd rather not lose patience but if your patience is loose you can try tightening it?
@@vilmfilm hahaha had a good chuckle at that this morning.
Nicely done. Those are some pretty good subs for the money, I had the 15 inch version for years. Finally upgrading this spring for a little more boom 🙂
Those look fantastic, I just bought two of the new Klipsch 15's for my theatre room and they blur my vision, I could only imagine how awesome four of these will be.
Awesome video! And that texturing looks amazing for how easy the application seemed
More Obsessed Home Theater stuff, love it!
My entire SQ setup in the car is built with Dayton copmponents.
Amazing stuff and quality !
You're going to run four of these?! Oh lord! I have two, with two Bridged Crown MA3600,s pushing them...my neighbors love them!
I was laughing with you so much! This is how projects and fixing stuff goes for me all the time! Famous last words "this should be easy"! Every mechanic knows just when it's going well something goes wrong! Good video!
For being a DIY-kit, that woofer looks really nice with that textured paint
Awesome channel! Your personality and knowledge pushed me to plan and study the detailing process and business. Cheers from the Philippines! :)
Nice! Thanks for watching Ernest!
Labelling a person as a "BAD PERSON" is perspective. I like watching your fumbling around it's informative
I built myself a pair of these for my living room. The second sub made the music more natural and less thump with smooth low frequency extension down to 20hz. One is neveri enough. They are being driven by Adcom GFA555 II. These are great subs and can play very loud they scare me. I built my second box on top of a card table and it was much easier than sitting in the floor and working around this monster. I didn't use a brad nailer, just bar clamps.
That came out really well!
When trying to find a the center of a box make a x from corner to corner
Dream workshop 👌
Thank you for making this video. Much appreciated.
Nice DIY subwoofer cabinet :) i like the color texture it's original.
I thought I was the only one who had matty math haha. Got some crooked shelves in my house thanks to it! Great job -- may look into one of these precut kits in the future.
Nice, i also like making subs 😀 and I also use Dayton audio. Cool would be to hang a sub in the air in the garage pointing downwards to the center.
Awesome video. This is my first time watching. I like your style. I have 2 of those so far but I’m designing a ported enclosure. I will surely have sawdustageddon. I’m dedicating a Crown XLS amp to each one. 1502 minimum bridged to 4ohm. I ordered my Duratex in base color. My local Sherwin Williams dyed it the color I wanted no charge (purple) justcin case anyone wants to custom color their Duratex. As thanks I purchased another roller and el cheapo brushes from them. It’s the same as any water base interior paint.
Nicely made video and enclosure build. I’ve had my 15” Ultimax for about 5 years now, still love it. I ended up doing a dual port diy enclosure, If you do end up doing 4 of them builds that’s going to be some serious bass. 👍
Nice car washing products, got to love Adams stuff.
If you're ever looking into car subwoof, I personally recommend JL-W7-V6 or JL-W6-V6.
I still await the day before I get a monster home theater with that much bass
I appreciate that you just kept it real
Awesome video Matt. Got the hat placement dialed in as well 🤙
nice work for your first time......looks great
THAT BMW!!! BEAUTIFUL!
Love the green screen the background looks so realistic 😁
Nice work brother
Perfect Matt, the only thing I would do differently is wrap it in black acoustic felt , for that rock concert wedge monitor look.
And put on the corner caps, replaced the feet with 2 wheels and 2 lockable wheels.....
This is an awesome video to watch.
Thanks man!
Nice, planning on building one myself. Oh and BTW, beautiful BMW 1M(?) in the background.
I just got the A7iii as well check out the Tamron E mount lens. Your going to love the auto focus for videos.
Sealed Box Master Race. Nice job.
This was really great to watch. I just can't give up my PSA subs. These came out really nice. I don't know if I love cars or home theater passion more.
Great choice with the A7III. I’ve had mine since release, and I absolutely love the flexibility of video and still photography.
Love the video brother. Awesome how you show the issues that come up with the build. You always keep it real. Keep up the good work.
I built this exact sub for my home theater. Powered via a Crown XLS1002 bridged. It absolutely rocks. I can’t imagine needing more than one in terms of output....it’s clean to 20Hz and rocks the house. I am thinking about adding a second only to help delocalize the bass as the current setup has it off to the side and it sorta bugs me that I can localize the bass. This setup is so powerful I had to add 70 lbs on top of the box as it would move even with rubber feet on concrete. Placed a 20 lb concrete slab along with 50 lb sandbag on top of that and it’s steady. I think that tightened up the bass too.
Did you ever get another 18"? I'm waiting for partsexpress to restock the 18"s and I'm planning on buying 2. I currently use 2 SVS PB13 Ultras. I'm still impressed by the PBs but I'm an absolute basshead and always looking for deeper bass. Do you think these dual 18s would sound better than the dual PB13s?
@@justinmanny86 I never got a 2nd one. Just couldn’t justify it. Rethinking it, it was more bass than I can handle. Ya it’s somewhat localized but I soon didn’t even think about it. Hard to say as a comparison as I’ve never heard the SVS’s for that matter. Either way, the ultimax 18 can literally tear the house apart. I soundproofed the theater room with double drywall and green glue and it still shakes through. I really can’t imagine someone needing more than one of these if placed correctly and amplified correctly. Good luck
Lol I know exactly what you mean. My bedroom setup is like that and what sucks, my side of the bed is the dead spot of the room lol. Thats nuts about the sliding! Im not sure how I missed it but MartyCube has 18" vented kits. 2 for $515 and this might be what I get! If I go dual 18s, Im not sure which amp to go with. I keep seeing Behringer inuke6000 pop up. Lol my wife already thinks the PBs are over the top and I have a feeling theyre nothing compared to dual 18" ultimax subs
@@justinmanny86 can always start with one sub and go from there. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Crazy you can get this level of performance with DIY. Very satisfying. Love showing off the system esp the bass. But the sub is hidden in a cubby that I have a custom removable screen so you can’t see the sub and no one knows the bass is coming. I just throw on a bass track that starts without bass and watch them jump when the bass hits.
@@mtbin2 I WISH I had a spot to hide the big ass sub! I went to order 2 18" martycubes for $515 and with the shipping costs it'd be almost $900. But if you buy one enclosure at a time for $339, its free shipping. Looks like Im starting with one lol
Great work man....
Love the 1M!
I like it! Some are scared to build even such a simple kit.
I never fill in the grooves. It is just very unnecessary.
Because this amp has a closed enclosure for itself it is ok to put the stuff infront of it.
Did you think about doing a Double Bass Array?
Mistakes happen. It's part of learning :)
I also like sealed a LOT more!
Nice job 👍🏻
It's like baking a cake from a pre-made box mix, you can do a plain jane version or take extra steps to make it perfection, build quality is always in the hands of the builder, I usually use a small damp cloth to wipe the seams clean, then follow with a bead of silicon on all the seams.
Yeah, I'm in that middle of the pack or slightly below average when it comes to doing stuff with my hands. I err on the side of the leader rather than doer side of the equation. Luckily both are necessary for functioning organizations.
You did very well.... i think i would have panel pinned the joins, but msf on the sides can still split with tiny panel pins..... lol 🤷♂️
yessss, enjoyed it a lot!!
Loved the video Matt.
Parts express for the WIN!!! used them for years when it comes to building custom or unique speaker/audio setups/builds.
I love Matt more and more and I've never even met the dude. He's the only person I follow on UA-cam that would actually tell new audience members to basically leave if their bored because this is how he does shit. I love it. Thank you for being you Matt.
Might be worth putting some pillow stuffing in there in the future to simulate a larger enclosure/better low end sq
I started with a Polk PSW10 I picked up on Amazon for $65 then upgraded to an Infinity Ref 10 I got refurbed from Harman for $100. Finally the latest one I got was a Polk PSW505 about 6 yrs ago that I bought used on eBay for about $130. I still have all 3 but the Infinity is doing work with a pair of bookshelfs for my turntable. The PSW10 is collecting dust. The PSW505 is not the greatest 12" sub but it gets down for what I paid for it. I cant imagine 4-18's.
Really nice build. FYI: You can get public domain music pretty easily.
Keep in mind that when you use acousta-stuff you want to glue it down and you don't want to overstuff the enclosure with it otherwise acousta-stuff will potentially get into the voice coil of the subwoofer causing the subwoofer to blow
And drill the speaker holes then clean out the bits of wood left inside, then ut stuffing in with sprey glue...... excelent job though, i probably would have done the same thing..... all hindsight
Nice!!
As for equalization and DSP I'd recommend a MiniDSP 2x4 HD and a UMIK, can make your response flat to around 15hz with some PEQ.
Great Video, awesome job. Sorry If you posted this already... but I would like to know were to buy the wood box kit. Thanks
Parts Express
Good video man, I appreciate you sharing mistakes as I’m sure I’ll make my own during the build. Looks great too. If you were to benchmark the Ultimax 18” to a commercial/internet-direct brand? Where would you rank it, both sealed and ported subs in mixed use?
I'm not quite sure yet. I'll be tuning them this weekend and putting them through their paces over the coming months to see if they are acceptable to me.
I might actually try to build one this looks easy and straight forward. Did you put the strip material where the amp sits before you screwed it in place?
No.... lol.... but hey ho, its still a go 🙂
Not home made, assembled highly engineered kit that works as long as you followed the directions.
But it looks good and now I want two.
Tyler Harrell he assembled (made) it in house- home made
Very good job, beautiful finish. please what brand is the paint
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it very much!
Well done! First time checking this out, you did an amazing job! That has got to be the cleanest build (and garage) I've seen! Well done, I may follow this path myself.
Ahh man! I wanted to hear it play. I have all Vandersteen speakers in my set up but I’m looking to swap out the subs. They are great for music but I mostly watch movies and I think I can do better. The price of these sounds really reasonable.
Hello with a quart did you have to paint the drawer for the dayton? In Spain, Amazon only sells half a quart of a gallon, do you think I would have for a 35x35x35 cm box? Greetings
are you goign to upload somewhere audio sample of this sub playing - i want to see the excursion too
Hi, what minimum length of box clamps could I get away with. I note you have 36 inch length ones. Would 24” be long enough to get the job done? Thanks
Just ordered the 18 Ultimax with sealed cabinet from Parts Express. Is it worth the cost and what is your opinion on the overall performance with both music and movies? BTW, great video.
Looking forward to the sub series. I’m currently running two Polk 12”s in my theater and curious on your thoughts of the 18”s.
The difference is comparative to the amount of work a four cylinder mini truck and a new Kenworth diesel can perform. These things are amazingly efficient, sound very natural and capable of moving massive quantities of air. Get your wife a stereo pair for Valentwant tine day. If you o get. serious, have your electrician add a dedicated 30 amp outlet for each amplifier.
Like the difference between a gardener's hand spade and a Caterpillar D90.
Apply the weatherstrip to the speaker so you know its in the correct spot?
Damn you have a 1M 👍🤩
Nice 🍾👍
Thanks for the video, I want one of these kits. Question, why didn't you cutout the amp hole while the board was not mounted?
Because you need to cut the braces as well.
@@ObsessedGarage maked sense, thank you
How are these working out for you? Do they hit has hard has the jtr?
Lost it at "Man...been a long time since my electrical engineering days"
I personally loved the video! You do you 👊🏼👏🏼 Chaos
I was about to ask where the hell you found paper towels, but quickly realized this was last year lol
Man i really want a decent subwoofer like this. Ive been wanting a nice one since you bought your dual 18".
Hope she sounds amazing for you, Matt.
You need to invest in a Brad nailer. It will help during clamp ups. This way you can tac in place-panels as you due your glue up
Yep I ALWAYS brad nail wood parts I'm gluing up. Plus it's fun shooting nails into wood. 😎
The ryobi cordless nailer is excellent. Shoots 2” brads. I like it better than my Milwaukee.
Hey Matt, a little off topic here, but have you ever thought of making a "review" section on the items on the OG store so customers can give others their opinions on items? I just know that myself personally, will always buy something with reviews compared to the same item that doesn't have any reviews.
Still was a great video.
Just for future use. There is quite a bit of bass heavy copyright free music available on spotify. Neffex and Seige are a couple examples
I have the mini-marty - rocks!
How does the ultimax compare to the jtr sound quality wise if both set at same spl level? I cant decide if I want to build 8 of these or just buy some jtr s2
The JTR would destroy these in SQ. But $10K vs. $4K for four of them wasn't worth the extra performance in this case.
I see matt has evolved into cool dad with his backwards hat
Boom!
Nah,he just got out of softball practice. He plays catcher.
sir. how many diameter of voice coil is your low frequency woofer?
If you have rack space a pro amp would get you more bang for your buck. And the um18 in a sealed box will take a good 1800watts.
Do have any amp recommendations
I'm not sure it will take that for long,
You'll need a GOOD amp that can push out that power even with the impedance rise @32hz for this sealed box when wired for 4Ohms. (WinISD shows 22Ohms @32hz Correct me if I'm wrong)
@@paulsalmon4771 I use an Inuke3KDSP, It's perfect for my needs, however if you really wanted to pump in rated power, It wont at all frequency as the impedance changes depending on the frequency.
For example my box at 28hz it's about 24Ohms and this amp can't push 1K at that Ohm load, however it does get louder than I need at that frequency as I've seen it do around 200 watts at 28hz and 100w is already very very loud.
I'm wanting to get something way way overkill. FP14000 by Labgruppen. impedance rise won't be an issue with that amp. (even though my Inuke is more than enough for my needs lol)
I was actually thinking bout the berhinger EP4000 or qsc rmx 2450 what are your views on either??
Paul Salmon I can't check them out fully right now, but they seem good on paper. Check out the Crown xls series, they are pretty popular for subwoofer duty or main duty and have a input voltage toggle that lets you use consumer inputs like RCA without needing something like a art cleanbox.
I personally want the xls 2502 to test before I get that FP14000 in the future.
I'm all for the obsessed audio vids!
Matt,
Are you going to go back to 4K video? It looked so crispy on my LG C7.
Yes, I'll be doing 4K 30FPS on the Sony A7III that I just got.
Great video! I've been looking hard at DYI lately. How do you think these will stack up to say Klipsh or SVS? You can't be the price of these for sure!
I think the SVS SB-16 is a little better, but I would think these outperform a Klipsch. Check out JTR Subs.
@@ObsessedGarage thanks
Sounds like your drill is on hammer action! Nice sub tho
Ha, ha... Yeah it was.
2ohm + 2ohm (+/+) (-/-) is parallel wiring. Lowers final ohm load to 1ohm.
2ohm + 2ohm (+/-) (+/-) is series wiring. Raises final ohm load to 4ohm
All else being equal, which would make a better subwoofer, a 150 Watt RMS / 8 inch woofer OR a 100 Watt RMS / 10 inch woofer?
No replacement for displacement. Go with the 10" it will push more air with less effort.
Your bank account must be like trying to fill up a sieve with water Matt! haha
Nice video. Enjoyed video. Did you make any other Subwoofer after this as you mentioned in the video?
Yes, I made 3 more.
Waiting for the videos :). Also pls make a video of your room after setting up all these Subs
Yep...that's the plan. The hard part is I have to carry them in there now.
I bought the same amplifier about 2 months ago still in the box I hope I don't have any of the same problems
It was a pretty easy fix. I would definitely open it us just to make sure it is all connected.
Cool project Matt...that should rumble a little bit...
Mixing sealed and ported in the same room? Sell the 4000ULF and get an S2
Weather stripping around the amp would be beneficial.
It has a pretty stout layer of it pre-installed.
How do you like the subwoofer so far? Is it able to reach lows in that enclosure for movies?
I'm not quite sure yet. It sounds good in my garage. I'm going to build another one and then take them home to test.
@@ObsessedGarage Cool let me know. I'm thinking of either building two of these or buying two Svs pb-2000 or similar.
I'm going to make another one soon. Then I'll take them to test in the theater. It sounds good in the garage.
Can you let us know how it sounds as a single sub in your theater? Interested in what the other prebuilt options you were looking at and how you decided on the diy route too? For me I’d be all for diy to save money for better performance but surprised to see a guy with a gt3rs go that route. Must be pretty good! Love the video!
The Ultimax is pretty much the standard DIY option now. I wanted a smaller sealed enclosure, so that's why I opted to do Parts Express stuff.
Obsessed Garage cool, thanks Matt. Assuming the options from SVS or Rythmik or others were significantly more money for similar or less performance? I know most of the big dogs from the internet direct brands are massive.
I dont think svs do an 18 inch, but who cares, the fun is in building it yourself, and the money you save..... the amps wont be like svs, neither the finish, or the speakers themselves, but the sence of pride and saving more than 3.5k is well worth it each, so over 4 thats 14k........ lolz for 75% of the capability....
i just sold all three of my rythmik fv25's (they are like mini jtr 4000's) and am about to order multiple jtr cap 4000's. really confused why you chose to go with parts-express dayton sealed subs. there's nothing wrong with them but they're just not even in the same league as the jtr sub you have. also mixing sealed & ported, not sure that's the best approach.
Simply due to cost. Spending $10K on subs wasn't something I was prepared to do. The more I listen to this home made sub versus my 4000ULF, the more I think I'll stick with JTR.
