Yes, it is possible to make a computer with magic mouth. This can be done for several reasons. One is that since magic mouth has no size requirements, it can be on an object as small as you want, so you can fit just about as many magic mouths in the 30 foot detection radius of all other magic mouths. There is also no mention of the detected phenomena having to be heard by the mouth, but simply that it must occur in the 30 ft space around it. This means the message can be as quiet as you want, to the point of being inaudible to most creatures, but it will still be picked up by another magic mouth. In addition, all the components of a computer can be replicated with magic mouth (the difference being that the ones and zeros are being very quietly spoken by the mouths). Thus, you can make a computer that will cost around you the entirety of the gold in the forgotten realms.

I like this spell a lot. I played a Warforged Artificer (Armorer) who was basically a fantasy and slightly more serious version of Inspector Gadget. I used a Warforged with an uncanny human face because at the time, none of us had any idea that Reborns were an option. Prestidigitation was the bread and butter for flavor as it was the best way to include all the niche and nearly useless gadgets the OG inspector had.

Mage hand. It has many uses, sure. Do I use it for that? No. I board a friendly ship, hide, and sneak into a room with a few fellows talking. I cast Mage hand to mess with them. The hands materializes, one stands to confront it with a sword. Mage hand, using one finger, engages in the battle. The sailor misses, Mage hand pokes the sailor in the chest. It backs up, gives a wave goodbye, and vanishes. Sailor, thinking he's been cursed, panics.

One of them is True Strike.
I know many people give it shit, but for my Arcane Trickster Rogue, it just works. So he'll bonus action hide, then use his action to use True Strike since it's Somatic only, no speaking required.
Once the target gets to the right spot, he leaps out and attacks with advantage using a gauratte wire, allowing the use of sneak attack and possible strangling the target as the wire uses both hands.
Since he's a Loxodon Rogue + Rule of Cool, he can use his bonus action to stab using a dagger with his trunk.
Another unessecary spell I like to use for the healer NPC in Storm King's Thunder is Ceremony, which she only uses to make holy water to drink, which baffles the party.
Lastly is used in my reflavored COS called Curse of Strahdboli, where he uses Magic Mouth on a statue inside the house, having it invite him in after giving a certain knock.

I've only ever had one character that had True Strike. It was more for roleplaying purposes than utility. I wanted to try something new, and made a Monk/Sorcerer. Since you can't advance Monk levels once you take a different class, I incorporated that into his story. His teachers were amazed at his great archery skills, and wondered how he did it. And since Sorcerers are said to come into their powers sorta accidentally, sometimes, or at onset of puberty...
Once they figured out he was using arcane arts instead of martial arts (though he himself just thought he was really concentrating hard on hitting the target), he was expelled from the order. Think I had Monk 3/Sorcerer 2 before that game broke up for some reason. The group really didn't like the character, as my spell progression was behind the curve. "If you were just plain Sorcerer 5 you could have cast fireball in that last battle", etc.
That was 3.5 days, when True Strike was +20 to hit, not just advantage like in 5th. I feel that was a nerf to a spell not many used in the first place.

I love a lot of the spells from 3.5's draconomicon because of all the awesome flavour they have. A suped up arcane mark that allows a dragon to scry on their possessions three times per day? Gold. A spell that lets a dragon turn their stomach into a bag of holding so they can safely consume their entire hoard to transport it to a new lair? Fantastic. Breath spells that add a nasty status condition to their breath weapon? Beautiful. The only problem? Most of these fun spells are situational, and dragons are sorcerers, so they'll almost never have the spells known for niche utility magics like wizards. At the same time, dragons are mostly loner creatures, so it's not like they'd be able to commission scrolls, wands, or know stones of these spells from the one dragon that does know it.
Likewise, there's a spell in dragons of Faerun that allows two dragon blooded creatures to swap a spell known to each other. The thing that makes it theoretically god tier is that it doesn't require it to be a spell on your class's spell list. Awesome potential, but you'd have to have one very permissive DM to let your kobold sorcerer find a dragon favoured soul or bard that knows the exact spell you're after and is willing to trade, so it's basically "dragon McGuffin plot hook, the spell" for whatever powerful magic is required to beat the BBEG. Although the idea of a Dragon Facebook set up just to help facilitate such transactions for standard use is hilarious to me.

A 6th level spell that takes 10 minutes to cast with a minimum of 1500gp reusable cost, it can effectively let you break the 'one spellcast per turn' limit rather easily along with ignoring cast time, and has similar mechanics to the spell variant of Glyph of Warding. Any 5th level spell that allows you to target yourself basically gets saved for later, autocasting as soon as your given conditions are met; sure the example of water breathing when drowning is sensible but lame given other possibilities, such as Tiny Hut to let you cheat death or Haste to bulldoze an encounter or a Blindness/Deafness to deny another creature's gaze/sonic effect.

My DM’s face had the fallen look of ‘Really?’ appear as he counted out about 8 elementals, just barely having enough character chips for the board. This was while we were at a pub and while he did this, I just casually asked if anyone wanted anything at the bar while we waited.

Permanency. It was removed after 3rd edition but I love the idea of making temporary spells permanent. I don’t really care if someone wants to use it to make themselves OP, I want to keep my magically conjured chair and make my polymorphed enemies permanently harmless animals.

The Friends spell have been seriously nerfed since 2nd edition.
In 1st and 2dn edition is granted the caster a +2D4 charisma for 1D4 rounds + 1 round per caster's level. 1 round being about a minute or the time between two initiative rolls when in combat. It affected ALL creature within a 60' radius, affecting their reaction to the caster according to his augmented charisma, making them much more likely to have a positive reaction. At the end of the spell, the affected creatures realize that they had been influenced, but do NOT automatically become hostile. If the caster have been abusive, it can incur some negative reaction, but if he was pleasant and friendly himself, the affected creature may not really mind.

My table uses prestidigitation a lot two clean and dry off after mishaps. But once my party used a combo of spells to make a racist and classist Tavern keep stand on one of his tables and make embarrassing admissions, only for another player to cast prestidigitation on him while he was up there to make it look like he had soiled his pants on top of everything else. It cut some of the tension, so no one was really upset at the immaturity of it all.

Not a spell, but a completely pointless thing I did:
The party had scaled a cliff and was now safe from an angry mob of kobolds. I decided to insult them for no reason by pulling out the good ol’ classic “YOUR MOTHER WAS A HAMSTER, AND YOUR FATHER SMELLED OF ELDERBERRIES!” According to the DM, one of the kobolds was so broken by that insult that he proceeded to walk into the ocean.

...Why did the DM port Tomb of Horrors over from 1e, when WotC already did exactly that in Tales from the Yawning Portal?
As I understand, that's a compilation of modules from older editions ported over to 5e. By the people that MADE the system....
Actually, I think I see why the DM ported it over himself...

  • @daikatarokamegawa542

Oh man I hadn't even pondered on just how much reincarnate. Friggin. SUCKS! It's twice as costly as its same spell level Raise dead, with the added inconvenience of not knowing what you'll end up as, and only the fringe benefit of not having to restore missing body parts, which is usually handled by the cleric, be it party one or temple.
To make Reincarnate more desireable I would change it to:
-It becomes a 4th level spell
    -Timeframe increases to a month
-Classes that get it increase to include Clerics and Bards
    -Cost reduced to 500g
-Instead of rolling on the table, the player and DM can agree on a new race that thematically fits the character. So for example a Human PC who always remembered who wronged them reincarnates as a Dwarf. A Murderhobo tendencies Elf comes back as a red Tiefling, a shy and meek Tabaxi comes back as a Halfling, etc.

Alter Self is a bit better than some people think. Namely, spells or abilities that detect illusions... do not detect Alter Self. Because Alter Self is a Transmutation spell, not an Illusion spell. It wont stop Truesight (neither would Disguise Self), but I would not call Alter Self a worse version of Disguise Self. Alter Self is a 2nd level spell for a reason, compared to Disguise Self being 1st level. Sure, Alter Self being a concentration spell is a bit of a drag, but it technically does grant more capabilities than Disguise Self does, but the most crucial one is there is no "illusion" to see through since it is a direct change to the physical body.

Magic Mouth is absurdly OP. You're basically creating a permanent minor magic item for 10 gp. You could make an alarm that start screaming if there's a burglar, or a jukebox that sings a song whenever someone puts a copper piece in, or something you could toss to distract people while sneaking that starts speaking the incantation for Fireball, and plenty of other creative uses. It can be triggered by any visual and audible condition within 30 feet, without any sort of perception check. As long as it's possible to see or hear someone, it can go off. You could carry one around, and make it impossible for anyone to sneak up on you.
And you can make the conditions as simple or complex as you want. You don't need to have a single magic mouth for each logic gate to make a computer. You can make a computer with one magic mouth. Or two so they can say "zero" and "one". And you're not even limited to the computable. You could make the condition be if it's shown a computer program that would halt.

Back again with my custom campaign, I don’t have a good answer for this question. The most unnecessary spell in my game is my bother’s favorite, the wall summon, which summons a stupidly large brick wall that serves no purpose but to intentionally get in the way. Somehow my brother isn’t annoyed by this spell at all and it’s become his favorite to use in any situation. At least he’s embraced what’s supposed to be unhelpful.

Home brew spell : Chronos VII. That spell allow you to accurately time up to 10 events, check if they are recurrent, and gives you the length of time down to the 12 960 000th of a second. All of it showing as glowing cuneiform, base 60, numbers floating in the air near whatever timing you are measuring. Format being years, months, days, hour, minutes, seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths and sixths. The Chronos VIII adds two more levels of precision.

Augury can be dramatic for the sick of being dramatic if you ritual cast it before some big event on the campaign, even though the answer is often impossible to interpret. Prestidigitation is my go-to explanation of how my characters don't stink (and yes, very strictly speaking, you can't use it this way, but unless you are so deep into survival that you count non-drinking water and soap, I believe it doesn't really matter). I also once used a continuous flame to create a memorial to the PCs late sister (the previous character of mine)

I had a battle-smith who took up Magic Initiate Druid. The other cantrip I took up was Shillelagh because despite using Wisdom, a battle-smith has the ability to use intelligence instead as long as the weapon is magical. Shillelagh takes any wooden staff or club into a magical d8 weapon.
It was useful as it freed up an extra attunement slot for something else for a while and the DM allowed me to make most fat and durable sticks I find into a makeshift club, so I almost always had an emergency weapon on hand.
