Hi , this is Oz ex Bonneville racer. Thought you might be interested in our Datsun Z/ Bonneville car experience. We first went to Bonneville in 1978. We ran a L28 with a home made turbo setup. The car eventually set a record of 186 MPH. We ran in D GT class which back then was any blown 3 liter stock bodied sports car (2 seater) or 5 liter non blown car.
The blower pushed the car up 2 classes. The car had a stock legal G nose as it was available that way in Japan . The body was stone stock, no aero improvements at all. Nothing poking through the hood .To record back then you had to qualify by going over the record. Then come back the next day and made a two way run. Your speed was the average of the two way pass.
We later changed to a 280 ZX ( it has a lower drag than a Z , really! ) That car set two records ( same class) first a 198 then a couple of years later 201 mph. All with the 3 pass requirement. Just like the Z , the body is stone stock. The fast single mile we have a timing slip for is 219 mph. The car did run a 226 mile but blew a tire and spun (at that speed) , never got the timing slip. . We missed a new record because of that tire. I still have the ZX, its pretty rough though. The last few years we ran an LD28 crank which made the displacement 2955 cc. All legal then in D GT.
I can only guess at the HP but I think it must have been around 650 plus or minus.
This was a no sponsor car built by myself and my wife.
the car never ran at El Mirage .

So much for the aerodynamics I can see.

you must not understand aerodynamics very well. the single most critical factor for aero is frontal area. IE: the silhouette profile of the vehicle when looking head-on at it. The turbo is clearly within the frontal area profile. YES, having the turbo extending out of the engine bay is going to increase the drag coefficient of the car, but the benefit of the fresh air being aspirated into the compressor will far more than make up for the one or two tenths drag penalty incurred for having it placed there

How would you go about storing a freshly assembled engine? I've come to a point in my build, where I had to assemble my 2jz, but the engine won't run for a few more months or even a year before I can actually start it up and get oil circulating through it.

just shoot some ATF in the cylinders and rotate the motor to distribute the lubricant. and what i do to start a new motor (non dry-sump), is hook a pump up to the in/out lines for the oil cooler in order to pressurize/flow oil through the motor. do that before starting the motor if its been sitting, even though i'm sure it has assembly lubricant on all the bearing surfaces

Only thing I would suggest is seating the thrust cap from the rear forward. Clutches and converters drive/push the crank forward, so the rear thrust is most important. At least that’s my thinking. Also, did the head receive steel head stud registers? You kinda moved through the head part a little quickly

    Why no head studs?
