I am curious, I've been researching the 1950's era and it sounds like a great time period despite the problems like segregation, and I want to hear an opinion from someone who lived back in that time period, may you tell me what it was like living in the 1950's? If so thank you.

    Here's an obscure facts:
On this day in 1894 {March 12th} Coca-Cola was sold in bottles for the first time, the first eight years that the drink was in existence it was sold only at soda fountains...
And just under fifty-one years later on January 10th, 1945 "Rum and Coca-Cola"* by the Andrew Sisters peaked at #1 {for 8 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers in Stores chart...
    * The record that preceded it at #1 was "Don't Fence Me In" by Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters, and it also stayed in the top spot 8 weeks...

Oh Brother, this beats all. Morey Amsterdam went down to Trinidad, and heard a street performer singing something like this. He came back to America, and wrote more lyrics. He gave it to The Andrews Sisters to record. At first they didn't want to. But then they did, and it became the 2nd biggest seller of the 40's decade!

pa 777 I am so proud to hear that Sweetie. Here in the United States, most your age have no idea who the Beatles were let alone the Andrew Sisters. You may have heard of the Dorsey Brothers, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. Their Mother lived in the same village as I grew up in and their cousins still live there in Pennsylvania. I have seen the Gold Records, pictures of them and with the Andrew Sisters, pictures with them and Benny Goodman. All the greats from back then. Their music is very easy to sing to,and to learn to sing by too. Keep your mind open when it comes to music and life. I have music on here from the Middle Ages, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt too. Music knows no age, and no time. It's either good or not good. The Andrew Sisters are good. If you go on facebook, look me up after you ask your Mama if you can write me. I can give you my email too if you don't go on facebook and your Mom says you can write me. I'm a Mom but my Daughter is 32 now, married and has a 2 year old son named Sebastian. You and your Mom can look at my facebook page and see I'm not a bad person. Let me know here in the comments if it's ok. Oh, on facebook I'm the Helen Kruse in Cassatt,South Carolina USA and I have the same picture as here. You be good and keep listening to this great music.

    • @asmrdahhling5444
      @asmrdahhling5444 8 років тому +1

Definitely ! Like pa 777, I'm French, but I'm 18, and I can tell you it's such a pleasure to listen to the Andrews Sisters on LP. The sound is so pure (records sound is better than a CD), and Jazz, Soul, Blues music are the base of what we listen to today. I'm a huge fan of Mariah Carey and Madonna, but, sometimes, you have to listen to the classics, and it's simply the best !
      Kindly, Erwan

    • @helenkruse

ASMRDahhling You both make me so proud. You know the stuff they play here in the States stinks. They don't care about talent, If you have the look, they have knobs that can fix that voice. Really they sound like someone dragging nails across the chalkboard, but a knob can fix that. Here in the States the corporations tell people your age what you like, you don't tell them. Then everyone is listening to crap and thinking its good because they are trying to convince themselves. So may here your age are in gangs and want to kill everyone and anyone in their way including the police. They have no respect for their elders, nor for themselves. The ones who are like yourself and pa777 are few and far between here. I am 54,was born and raised here and I cannot stand it. Too many doing as they please, with no respect for anything.I can go on and on but you are on the computer,so you can see what is happening here.Do you use facebook? If so, come look me up. Then we can talk whenever you want. I used the same profile picture as here.I'm the Helen Kruse in Cassatt,South Carolina.I know you probably heard of Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey. Their first cousins live in the same village in Pennsylvania that I grew up in. Their Mother's house is still there. I saw their Gold Records on the walls. I never met their Mother, nor did I meet them. I know their cousins, and their homes. When they would visit their Mother, they would play and everyone would go to the park across the street from their house. There was a park pavillion there and the Dorsey's would play and they would put together a dance and a picnic for all. There was once a dam and cottages there. The cottages burned and since the dam was made before the government started keeping records there was no record of it so the government made them take the dam down, and now it's just a group of springs and a creek. There is nothing but woods there now,and 2 families living back there. I did know a woman who was so fat she actually fell through the dance floor at that Park. I would think about that as a child when I saw her. She would sit on her front porch all the time. When I was a kid she was already an old lady.Go enjoy the music and look me up on facebook if you want. Sending you lots of love from me here in South Carolina, USA

Thanksss !! Yeah.. this is our society, I personnally don't really like my generation but I kinda like the music some legends are still making (Madonna, Mariah, Janet, Céline) but the best is behind us... What the Dorsey Brothers did was so cool !! In these days, nobody would do that... living legends wouldn't do that but it's like that !!
      Kisses from France !! :3

WOW! I am impressed! As an aficionado of both this song & the wonderful Andrews Sisters {since mid 1965, when @ 2yrs of age I received my first A.S. hand-me-down, an old electric victrola & this 78rpm copy of their 1944 edition of this song}. I have a few other cuts of their hi-fi/Stereo remakes that I grew up with but never this song. They were quite prolific & released new material right thru the 60s even though they hadn't really had a big hit since right after "THE" war. Thanks!

clean and refreshing in this age of skin and pc. rum and coke is rum and cake by me, as in rum cake, love it almost as much as I love this recording, thank you.
Btw there are no copyrights for genres of music, like folk songs, or for calypso dance to be specific, despite Belasco and Lord Invader credited in court, and winning what was back then huge amount of money. These lyrics describe realities, another reality is that without Morey Amsterdam we'd most likely never even heard this tune, and so the copyright was awarded to him, by the same court. Besides, later on quite a few other versions popped up among them one by Lord Invader. Copyright infringement there?

This is not rare to me. My brother bought the album "Boogie Woogie Bugle Girls" in the early 70's on a paramount reissue, which contained this version of the song. I have about 4 copies of this album, both on Paramount and MCA. The MCA copy has a dropout in my favorite tune, "Three little Fishies".
Over the years I made many cd's from these albums, and last year I made a Hi Res DSD rip of this album. The song in this video though, seems to be mixed a bit differently than the song on my "Boogie Woogie Bugle Girls" LP's. I love that entire album, which consists of the Dot material reissues in stereo.

    Paul Baron
Paul Baron led studio orchestras during the 1940s and 1950s, as well as recording under his own name. He was also featured on his own CBS radio program.
Baron also allegedly co-wrote, with Jerri Sullavan and Maurey Amsterdam, the Andrews Sisters' calypso hit ''Rum and Coca-Cola.'' The lyrics to ''Rum and Coca-Cola'' were found to have originally been written by calypso artist Rupert Grant.

Wow, they have talent, looks, and they are not naked. What have we lost that the female singers now feel the need to degrade themselves to the point of becoming slots and have no talent. The auto tune is even having a hard time trying to make what they sing pass as music.

I don't think you realise that the female singers themselves don't feel the need to 'degrade themselves', obviously. It's a patriarchal tactic. Sexualisation sells, etc. The patriarchy/capitalism has evolved from women being perceived as very reserved and obedient (e.g. up until the 70's, as The Andrews Sisters were) to being very openly sexual and appealing to the evolving rich white man's needs. You and many other people are in the bad habit of blaming the workers and not the industry.

Katrina B No one is forcing the women to appear half-naked...they are doing it themselves...sadly. Morality and modesty are needed and a refusal to degrade themselves. Real men...good men... don't want women who dress and act like that.

***** first of all, how do you even know that no one is forcing these women to appear half naked? In Kesha's case, she was mentally and physically abused and threatened by her manager to be sexy and he caused her to develop an eating disorder etc. Just because someone 'seems' happy and willing, does not mean they are - much the case in porn. In many cases, women appear half naked because in this patriarchal society, women's worth is measured by their sexuality. Just because a woman who has been cultivated from birth to believe that her job in life is to be attractive and attracted to goes along with it, it doesn't make it any less of patriarchal tactic and does not change the fact that it's sexual objectification.
Morality and modesty are entirely socially constructed, honey. Not only are they subjective, but it's also completely outdated, alongside gender roles. Please unlearn that. Appearing half naked is not 'degrading themselves' nor is it an act that is due to self respect - I'm sure they respect themselves and believing that their worth is dependant on their sexuality is exactly what society wants you to think, mate.
To add on to that, if you honestly believe that women care about what 'real men' think (I don't know if you're aware of this but there's no such thing as 'real men'! Men who like other men, girls who don't wear much, girls who dress in hijabs are real men. Men who live and breathe are real men. By putting down their views and preferences because you disagree with them and deciding they're not 'real men' is insulting to both men and women) then you need to educate yourself. If youre gonna put women down for the sexuality then good for fuckin you, go back to the 19th century, but do not assume that women's aim in life is to please men, lmao. Not only is it ignorant but it's also heteronormative - especially when only around 60% of the world is heterosexual, if that.

The Andrew Sisters set the stage for the calypso craze of the 1950s with their hit recording of " Rum and Coca - Cola , " a song written by Trinidadian calypso singer Lord Invader . Ironically , the lyrics were a critique of the US presence on the island and decried the rise of prostitution around the US bases . The song's pungent social commentary was lost on the US fans , who fell in love with the catchy , upbeat melody and exotic flavors of the tune.
