i remember one of your older videos and you were talking about someone telling you not to swirl the whiskey in the glass. If all the "aggravation" the bourbon encounters during transfer, bottling, packing , shipment, etc... does not "aggravate" the bourbon... a few swirls in the glass is not going to hurt a thing.
Ya good one Matt. I have listened to other youtube channels mention that you should not swirl the whiskey. Rather one should hold the glass at a 45 degree angle or a 37 degree angle or whatever angle you want and then turn the glass to coat the inside of the glass. I also SJ my whiskey and find that is best. The whole concept to the SJ is to add air to the whiskey (aggravate)

I think he is right about the swirling. I preliminarily coat the glass and do an initial swirl, but then let it sit for a while. I agree with him, as soon as you swirl you get way more ethanol and fumes. This is just my experience. But, I agree that his glass is garbage.

I have to say that I've had Pappy 23 on multiple occasions, and I am one of those who thinks it's overrated. I would never, ever pay secondary prices for it. If I can get a bottle at MSRP or in a raffle, fine. Honestly, I'd probably just turn around and sell it to someone. It's not worth the ridiculous prices you're likely to find it at. There are many other $200ish bourbons out there that are equivalent or better.
As a newbie to Bourbon I have jumped in with 2 feet for the last year or so. I saw that video when it came out and was rather confused by both that point about swirling and his overall kinda of unpreparedness.. which that part I chalked up to slight discomfort in front of the camera.. anyways.. thanks for the perspective Matt! The guy makes good whiskey, but he doesn't seem to know a lot about the art of tasting it. Oh...and you aggravated it SO hard. That SJ aggravated the heck out of it. So much that all the aroma had to leap into your nose in protest.
Adding air into any solvent changes circumstances in one way or another. It's nice to appreciate the aspects of things as they open and close in many different ways. Oxygen is very powerful. There are many ways to experience something.
Watched this one a couple of times...over the top laughter!!!! The comparison of glasses to hotel rooms...that brought tears...and so dang true! On the serious side...my pallet is just beginning to become educated...so a Pappy 23 would be wasted on me at this point. So thanks for the tips...and the laughter!!!

I'm in the biz so I have to be careful not to piss off everyone, but I am not very careful. There is a whole lot of pretention in this biz now. I love how you call it like it is.
Most I ever learned about bourbon tasting was from Limestone Branch Distillery - They explained to smell from right to left, focusing on 1 nostril at a time. Just like the right and left halves of your brain do different things - so do your nostrils. One side will tend to be more savory and the other will be more sweet. Helps you dissect different profiles before sipping - and since most of your taste comes from what you smell - more distinct smells = more profound bourbon tasting experiences.
I love the "B". fan of the B and I had no idea it could be aggravated . But to be honest I only swirl wine and cognac. I must also say you make me laugh out loud and thank you for that Sir. Keep going.
One thing I missed was I have to drink Pappy Vanwinkle out of the bottle, Sh*t now I have to travel to Oregon to pick up a case ! And yes the Pappy Vanwinkle family is whiskey royalty love that brown nectar!!! Very entertaining video /// peace y'al

I don't know when the original video was recorded, but that different-parts-of-the-tongue-taste-different-tastes was debunked at least as far back as the 1970s.
I like the single bourbon reviews you do or the double bass like Mash&Drum does it, but still my favorites and gold standard is the double blind. I would love to see more of those from the whiskey tubers.
If I want advise on how to market scarcity on great bourbon, I’ll turn to VW3. But I agree that video looked a little like they woke him early from his nap to do a surprise video. Let’s try and get a ADHD fan who happens to be in chemistry to break down the differences in the two glasses of any bourbon. Is more alcohol released in an SJ vs a rest? Are the fumes given off the two glasses detectably different, or just in your mind? Science can tell us more than inheritance!
