Early in my whiskey experience, I thought “nosing” was geeky, elitist, and dumb. This edition is yet another way to understand how nosing alone could be a pinnacle experience without going to the palate. I always thought DRINKING the stuff was the point. Over time I’ve come to appreciate the nose, the use of nosing glasses like Glencairns, etc. Every once in awhile you smell something that is just ridiculously good. So good you almost want to just nose it. Have I become an insufferable whiskey snob? Not sure about that. But I truly do enjoy the nose process…now. Sometimes it’s lacking. But every once in awhile, BAM. Like this. 😊
Wish I could get to that point, I still thinking nosing is utterly pointless. We don’t sniff our food for 5 minutes, we eat it. And yes, we smell food and aromas and it adds to the experience, but while we’re eating, it’s not a separate process. I’m trying hard but don’t think I’ll ever get there. If it tastes good/bad, who cares what it smells like? 🤷🏼♂️
@@jreezy70 I would say that maybe one out of ten whiskies will have a nose that really grabs you. Each one is different, but a small number are just fantastic and worth the effort. One thing you might consider: after finishing a drink, let the residual whiskey sit in the glass for a bit, then smell the empty glass before cleaning it. You’ll find it interesting in most cases. But again, in some cases, noteworthy. Of course if you really want to nose something, reach for Laphroaig 10. That is, in my view, the king and queen and Super Bowl of noses, albeit one that will kick you right in the private parts… The empty glass nose on Laphroaig is also quite amazing.
@@tommyrq180now that you mention it, I do enjoy nosing the glen cairn after it’s empty, and you’re right, some do have a satisfying aroma, others are flat or muted. I always give nosing a try up front, but for me. nosing the glass after I’ve drank the bourbon is a better order for me. I still don’t quite see the point, I’m most interested in how it tastes, but still entertaining to get those “after” notes. Cheers 🥃
HA, I had the meat sweats yesterday too, I went to Franklin's in Austin TX and got one of their friday/saturday-only beef ribs. It's straight outta the Flinstones.
Matt, I have a request; could you and the Whiskey Tube community help us out in the public and review a bunch of the mystery bottles that Total Wine sells under the Spirits Direct banner? Lots of them are hard to find info on, but they are everywhere. I’m in Minnesota and we have relatively low availability on lots of things outside the more popular releases. It would be nice to see if there are gems without having to fork over all my money to Total Wine and wade through mediocre whiskies. I already bugged my favorite Minnesota whiskey guys at the Bourbon Note. So now it’s two people that I bugged.
You want to go with the most reviewed on Total Wines list and work your way down. Trust me coming from a Total Wine employee like myself. A lot if bourbons many in the Midwest can get. Here in the PNW Washington State we do not get too many great bourbons and can’t find a lot of the sought after ones.
Mattt,,, one of the fun things I do in my mundane life is when I watch your 1 oz Wednesdays. I guess right before u,what you're going to rate it, I'm right over 50% of the time, usually within .1 or .2 points. That's what I got going on,,, And don't let your meatloaf....
Matt is either the nicest drunk ever, or the kind who shows up at Waffle House at 3am and gets kicked out. Also, loved the explanation of the nose on this one. 🤣
With all respect and love that's the craziest thing I will hear all day and its only 8am. Not all whiskey does well at higher proofs. Just as age doesn't mean better, higher proof doesn't necessarily mean better either.

I collect but I don’t drink.. I LOVE nosing a glass 🥃 though. I’ll order rare ones at restaurants when they have them and just smell 👃
Recently got this one and opened immediately, michters has burned me a bit but this has turned the tide. Love it
2:17 gotta give a like for the "whiskey twister" lmao
Your Lynchburg gig sounds awesome! Nice review BTW

I was at a michters tasting last night. The shenks and bombergers are great
I'm jelly . . sounds awesome. Cheers.

#beenkickedoitofmorethanonce I’ll 🤘
Welcome to Matt my name is ADHD
No way i guessed the 10 yr 23 release 10 secs into you explaining the profile
Was fortunate to snag a backup bottle of the 2023 10yr. 😀
Oh Matt, now I have BBQ on my mind. Cheers.
The one we tried definitely smelled and tasted like a 16-18 year bourbon.
Hi Matt, my name is Matt
Of all the bourbons I tried and failed to get this year, this one and JD12 make me the saddest.
I just picked up the bourbon 10 at the Jersey MSRP, $299.99
Would love a bottle of this. I got a bottle of the M10 rye, it’s so good.
Anyone tried 23F ?
If then how was it compare to A barrel ?
Lynchburg BBQ. Wow. I’m jelly. Like super double-dog jelly. Do a video about it, Matt! 😊🎉 🇺🇸
I have not even seen this years Michter’s 10, even at museum prices
Barrel #23A was really good I heard?
Bilabial flaps!😂
Yea it’s a good Whiskey this year!
C923 I would say takes that title
I just got 2 bottles $134 each plus tax 😅
Definitely thin. We crave a barrel proof 10yr!
Prepare to sell your kidney
Hell yeah
You're smelling your breakfast...all you swirled is your ethanol to its finest..Mr 15+ yr old pour. Your glass was dirty with hair. $25 pour....GONE.
I am the biggest idiot I know, but what you typed is the dumbest shit I've ever read (Top 5).
Proof is the reason I've never purchased one of these. These high end bourbon releases should never be less than 100 proof.
With all respect and love that's the craziest thing I will hear all day and its only 8am. Not all whiskey does well at higher proofs. Just as age doesn't mean better, higher proof doesn't necessarily mean better either.
You lead an extremely dull life if THAT is the craziest thing you'll here. LOL@@gradohector3
