These single barrel reviews are a real issue. Akin to judging if a pitcher is all-star worthy by cherry picking a single game performance to review. I'm not sure there is a solution to this. Best I can think of - however unrealistic - is to not accept media samples of single barrels and go buy one yourself. Then do it again two more times over the course of the year, then average out your 3 scores. Yes, I am insane.

Ya single barrels are tough to judge in something like this, because they arent all the same. Like the rebel 10yr. The one i have isnt all that great. But, i guess thats why they have their own category and not judged with everything else. Only real way to do it. I like your idea, but idk how feasible that could really be. Definitely not accepting media samples which are most likely honey barrels is a great start

As I've often said, 1792 never disappoints. Small batch and Bottled in Bond both punch way above their price point.
Warms my heart to hear Ben Holladay. I met their master distiller recently and he’s a super nice guy living his dream. Oh, and their bottled-in-bond bourbon is the beez knees cheers!
BH is the best bourbon most people will never taste. Love it. Their red wheat release was exceptional

I think the distilleries are just sending their best barrels to be judged! Kudos to those that sent their small batch product.
That’s what I would do. And if my cherry-picked single barrel is good, for which there is no guarantee, then the likelihood that my other stuff is good…is good. 😊
Journeyman is the best sleeper of the bunch. The whole line up is delicious. Little hard to find but well worth the purchase. Corsets whips and whiskey is another great offering.
Whiskey Thief! This small group of folks on the outskirts of Frankfort are doing some killer stuff. Just grabbed three of their single barrels at barrel strength last week. Crazy to see them earn a double platinum rec from you, Porter.

You are looking great.... It's hard to get into shape..... You make me try harder to reach my goal of getting down to 200. I'm now 210 but have been as heavy as 286. I'm 75 yrs old now . but have fought my weight all my life. Tonight is sort of a Wild Turkey 101 Rye night.... but now I'll stop writing and watch the video.

I tried the same one from Rock Town today and it was absolutely fantastic. It was a demo being presented by the rep and I told the store they need to do a barrel pick.
Was at Journeyman on Father's Day. You should check it out when you're back in Michigan. Did a Barrel Proof flight and all the pours were really good - better than expected. The Corsets, Whips and Whiskey was my favorite.
Corsets Whips and Whiskey and Silver Cross both were good by my palate. Definitely doing good things at Journeyman. Will need look for that feather thingy 😏

Would also recommend Journeyman’s Corsets Whips & Whiskey 100% Wheat whiskey. Amazing pour. Some of their stuff gets pretty funky, but it seems like some of the newer releases are really becoming refined and much better balanced. They do a lot of stuff and smaller barrels. Would really love to find that hazmat from journeyman Great video gotta love the virtue reference. Cheers
Picked up a store pick of that rock town column still collection here in Northwest AR and I absolutely love it. Proud to have an AR bourbon do so well. 🐗
Shout out for Rock Town. My home distillery too. The Column Still collection is Arkansas grain, distilled at Bardstown, aged back in Arkansas. My local shop just did a barrel pick of this. If you are interested, let me know and I'll see how I can get you a bottle.
I hit up a half dozen stores in Arkansas a couple weeks ago and couldn’t find any of the Column Still. So bummed.

That Blackened Rye the Lightning is really really good. I finished my bottle off late last year, but saved a 100ml bottle for a rainy day.
Thinking about doing a blackened flight when I get my Blackened x Wes Henderson. Rob Dietrich blends damn good whiskey.

What I think is most impressive about your new BRILLIANT slogan is that it came from your singular ingenious mind! Now if this slogan were conceived by two minds, a duo lets say, then it wouldn't really hold very much merit and would show how under par each of the duo's minds were.

I know people love to hate on McKenna 10yr, but every single time I have had that, it has been delicious. Yes, there are probably bad barrels that make it to market, but I have to think most of them are really good to great.
Grabbed a Ben Holiday for $47 after your video the other day and like it a lot.
Would be a tough sell for $60. I even wish it was closer to $40, but understand that BiB and smaller distillery is going to hike the price a bit compared to larger players
Not a pro at formulating comparisons, but I did a side-by-side between it and Bardstown Origin (white label) and preferred Ben Holiday. Will try some other A/B in the future.
We visited Whiskey Thief last September. It’s about 10 miles west of Frankfort, KY. We were staying at a B & B in Frankfort and the proprietor recommended them. Great experience. The tour concluded with a tasting from half a dozen barrels they had set up representing their different mash bills. You could then buy as many bottles as you want ($150 ea.) which you filled yourself using a whiskey thief. Very cool experience! They told us back then that their whiskey was only available at the distillery.
wow, they charge you $150 and you have to bottle it yourself? Sounds like massive margins to me.
I think the Whiskey Thief may have been a honey barrel. I did the tour and tasting in Oct 22. Very cool experience but I thought the whiskey and price was very over rated.
Their 'Down Home' brand is starting to get up there with Four Gate in price, but doesn't seem as rare, at least around Louisville.
Awesome video! Glad that you did the top placers and called out most people's "unicorns". It will be nice to see the day that all the bourbon/whiskey hunters stop salivating over the mainstream mega distillers.
Love Ben Holladay BIB and would like to find their Soft Red Wheat Bourbon. I have 3 different bottles/batches of Henry McKenna 10 Year BIB and they are all fantastic. Surprised on a 94 score for 2XO Phoenix Blend? It was pretty normal compared to the Innskeeper Blend. Buzzard’s Roost has some great offerings. 🥃
The Buzzard's Roost tobbaco smoked is really good too.
Single barrel is BS in a competition. They should call it best barrel picker instead of best whiskey
King's County barrel proof is available if you look, and it is absolutely amazing.
Frey ranch not scoring well? Thats a surprise. I freakin loved the frey ranch i had. Definitely better than the rebel 10yr single barrel i have. Ive been contemplating the blackened rye the lightning for a couple-few weeks now. Im definitely going to grab it now
Kind of shocking on the Fray Ranch because their single barrel cask strength bourbon or ryes tend to be pretty good once they open up.

Competitions should block single barrel entries. They're functionally meaningless because they never represent more than a couple hundred bottles or so and can deviate WILDLY from every other barrel that company puts out.
Agreed. Small batch should be considered the more reliably consistent baseline that's more readily available for us mere mortals. (The non-UA-camr consumers)

I scored a bottle of the Kings County Eaves Blind - Barrel Strength Bourbon and it's an amazing bottle.
Whiskey thief is only sold at their distillery and it’s an awesome experience there. Poured my own bottle there and it’s my celebration bottle!
That stinks to hear that Kings County BIB was so low. I used to really enjoy it. Before the single barrels and hazmats started coming out, that was my favorite in the lineup. Maybe they’re blending less of the honey barrels into the BIB shelf offering.
What are the tier rankings for each individual award? For example, is everything below 90 points gold or is there a double gold ect. and what's the highest/lowest number of points a sample can receive?
I had 3 bottles of Rossville Union barrel proof rye and it was so good the first 2 didn't last long but I did bunker the last one. I think the RU rye is way underated. Cheers!

Henry McKenna does well in blinds. Yes they probably send in their best but the good barrels are GOOD. It’s won several blinds for me.

One of my favorite bottles is a kings county hazmat store pick. Unbelievable what happens to their juice when it reaches hazmat.
I've been seeing a lot of King's County, but haven't tried that one. I'm sold now.
Is the Rock Town the Arkansas bourbon they distill or the single barrel BBC distills for them?
The wilderness trail ryes have always been good, especially ay cask strength.

Honestly these distilleries should know they are susceptible to social media influence. I'm thinking they are pumping out a good product and most of us are just focusing on allocated shit we tend to miss the good stuff. Thanks Matt for your honest commentary. I'll be trying a few more local and craft distilleries now because of you. Ill also give my feedback.

Just FYI, but Buzzard’s Roost Whiskey doesn’t list a Smoked Rye on their website. They have a Barrel Strength, a Toasted, and a Char #1 rye. Not smoked. So maybe that’s experimental or soon to be available. Would be interesting to know. Thanks!

I’ve heard the store pick/cask strength offerings from journeyman distillery are fantastic. I’ve also heard their regular offerings are just meh. Need to find one of their store pics somewhere, but not gonna find it here in North Carolina.
I've been to the distillery a couple years ago. A fun experience and nice location, but couldn't find anything that I needed to buy after tasting their standard lineup. At the time Fred Minnick raved about their Corsets and Buggy Whips bottle which tasted decent, but nothing stellar.
Yeah man, every rave review I’ve seen from journeyman is for a cask strength store pick. It seems the store pics have a red top to the bottle compared to the every day lineup. I’ve heard nothing bad about the regular offerings, but I’ve heard nothing special about them either. I will 100% pick up a store pick if I ever see it in my travels. Cheers my friend.

The bottle of Henry Mckinna 10 yr that I have fights with Ben Holladay for last place in blinds that I have with BIB. I pick Evan Williams, Benchmark, Knob Creek, and EH Taylor all day over both in the 100 proof category.
I don't see a point with including single barrel selections in a competition like this when the distillery can pick out the barrel to submit. I would be open to it if the competition officials sent someone to the distillery to point at a random barrel in the rick house to provide the samples for judging. (or as someone else said, picked up a single barrel offering off the shelf at random - not a store pick)

I think the competition should have a rule about availability. The winner of the SmB bourbon category Whiskey Thief is only sold at their distillery, not online either. Guess I'll just hop in the TrackHawk (weeep!WEEEEP!) and drive 1500 miles just to try a bourbon... PS - I want some of that Willy Wonka Pam Anderson edition bourbon...

Found a bottle of Legends single barrel bourbon, the bottle says aged greater than 2 years. I got it anyway for $48, not bad but taste young.
Did 13th Colony ever send you there regular release Bourbon and Rye for you to try? Let me know and will ask them for you. Great People at 13thC AND their DO is one of the best I have ever had
