In the stand-up arcade version of this game, my little brother was able to make it to the rank of Brigadier General on ONE quarter. That was 24 years ago, and I still feel pride at his skill.
Ah man, really brings back memories. Growing up in the 90s I played this all the time with my best friend. His mom refused to let him put in his initials and for years I never knew why. His name was Frank Andy Grant . . .
I'm sure you know already but start a new game then use ONLY 3 bullets to kill the first 3 good guys (blue uniform military personnel), after this the screen is shown from the perspective of one of the aliens. This game was really cool.
Kronomorphs used to terrify the shit out of me as a kid. When i got the PS1 version and found out in the manuel they birth like Xenomorphs on steroids. Slowly grow into your body and bones then litterally explode out of you...jesus christ didnt help with the childhood trauma.
I plunked so many quarters into this until I could literally last forever in this game (the game resets and you keep fighting until you die. The get a life stage helps you keep going.) They definitely need to re-do this badassedness in HD. With game guns and online support for 3 and 4 players. Brings back memories :-)
@@booker9879 yep, Maximum Force(which Atari Games/Mesa Logic did shortly after this game). I had always yearned for an N64 version, but due to that system's cartridge format at the time, the publisher and Atari's parent corporation at the time(Williams/Midway) thought it wasn't worth doing it on console. IMO, they should've looked at how Capcom did Resident Evil on the N64 and figured out a way pull off that same trick.
It's a tricky battle, I'll say that. But I've managed to beat the final boss ship a couple times because I've seen a few other people on UA-cam do it first. The key: aim for the ship itself and try to ignore as many of the alien soldiers as possible. Harder than it sounds though.
I own the the stand up Arcade game of this, Maximum Force, and A51: Site 4 and can attest, it’s possible and dare I say easy to take down the mothership if you follow Cooksy’s strategy. The Alien Queen in the sequel Area 51: Site 4 on the other hand is crazy difficult!
Very nice. Played that arcade so much as a kid. If I remember correctly, I believe in the very beginning if you shoot only the humans and nothing else. It gives you predator heat vision for the rest of the game.
@@mostverticalproductions4808 little off topic, i just played through area 51 the ps2 one and theres litterly area 51 arcade cabnit in the game.. in area 51 lol
Great vid. Never seen someone play this game without getting hit. I play the arcade version myself. Haven't had the ps1 version since the game was ported there. There seems to be extra secret levels in mine that you didn't do and some in yours that I don't see in the version I play through. Maybe it's a matter of execution but I'm wondering why they would program the two differently but be so similar in the other 99 percent of the game. Either way. Loved the video. One of my favorite games of all time. I play it a few days a week multiple times.
There definitely is something off about this video. Some secrets missed, I think, but it’s been a long time since I played it. And the RNG gods were never this generous. There was one moment in particular, at about 23:20, where two aliens on opposite sides of the screen were blasted at the same time and no grenade was spent. I kept rewatching it and that alien on the right side shouldn’t have been killed
There's another secret room. Im not 100% sure how to replicate it. But you get to it in the area between 17:22 and 17:23. It takes you to an area where you shoot watermelons. After playing this game countless times on PS1 as a kid I found it last night on an arcade version my partner and I happened across. Ive literally not been able to find it anywhere on the internet. Maybe it happens if you shoot the dark grey things (bombs?) on the floor at the bottom? Also wow. I thought I was hot crap at this game 0.0 Edit: Ok, I did find it on the internet. Apparently the room is called Mellon Head. You get to it by shooting the windows, I think. I think its also only for the Area 51/Max Force combo arcade machine. This is the video where I found this ua-cam.com/video/U_RXBNNBRPw/v-deo.html
Sgt maj with one ribbon.when i played I had 2 ribbons at ssgt 4 ribbons at sgt maj by maj I had them all.So I think it goes how good of shot you are.But I’m old now I probably would be lucky to get 3 or 4 ribbons with my bad eye sight
bruh thats exactly where i played it for the first time. then Cici's closed and another pizza place called Sicily's Pizza bought the arcade machines and they were there.
where can i get a working rom for this game??? i've downloaded the rom and chd from almost every website and none of it seems to work. it says ''no area51 roms found'' when i try to play it, im using the latest mame emulator.
i downloaded this game off an abandonware site and it opens in a small window and won't fullscreen. Using windows 8, 64 bit, any advice. I tried changing properties but didn't help. I obviously cant install the windows version as it doesn't work on 64 bit even though i have all the files on a cd i burned off an iso image.
What's your ETA for Evac copy them but who are they. Radio control to ground radio control to tower radio control to air radio control to stealth nuke Ion beacon cannon controls.
Oh, man what a game. I remember playing this along with House of the Dead at my laundromat near my school. That time we also had Tekken 2 and NFL Blitz. Good times, good times. By the way, on 13:19, I'm just realizing that this dude crashed into a wall for no reason.
leaderstragg Yep! S.T.A.A.R. will encounter the Kronn Hunter and treat him as a neutral. Peterson gets infected and transformed, but retains his consciousness, knows Kronn and retains English. Hunter becomes an ambassador for loyalist Kronn, with Peterson as his translator.
I remember never being able to get the tank top secret level, but being able to get every other secret more or less; the screen would scroll too fast for me to hit all the windows. Same thing with the get a life level. Some of the secret levels seem different compared to the arcade version; the arcade had a shake your buddha level. You also didn't unlock the kronn hunter mode. One thing I also loved about this arcade game was that the better you did (like the higher your accuracy was and the more bonus items you hit), the more enemies would appear and the faster they'd shoot at you; sorta like a built in difficulty gauge.
I never was able to get the secret areas. Of course I grew up in the 90's (Anyone here born in 92?) and the only way you knew about secrets in games was either through cheat books or through playground rumors. I miss those days.

"COME ON. STAY LOW." Love the 90s games.
Me, too.
I’ll live on die on those games I may not have been born in the 90s but damn glad for arcades as a kid and still glad for these games
As a kid I always thought the female soldier was Jill Valentine from Resident Evil! I guess it's the beret, blue uniform, and the STAAR logo! 😁

Just casually abandoning the driver who saved you to his death
He was dead already.
I had no idea about most of these secrets! I just remember having a blast playing this at arcades in the 90's when my family went on holiday
I had a 906 streak on this game back in 1996. My proudest accomplishment in life. :p Could get through the whole game with two quarters,
>pinup easter eggs
>FMV campyness
>midi ost

I'm surprised you didn't save that lady that was getting chomped on in the Chow Palace
After all these years of playing this game I've never seen the Tank Top easter egg O_O wow
Me too!
I was just thinking about x marks the spot p
me either that’s crazy
I still to this day wish they'd make a proper remake to this
Can't say I'm surprised by the anticlimactic ending but I was still hoping for a better final boss

Yup. Alien Hunter mode. That is the green splotch on the rankings.
What's missing is the other game on the cabinet.... good to know I'm not the only one hitting all the Easter eggs
