You are in fact going to become a Metal Head as you come to appreciate the talent and the emotions even more. And you're going to be happy about that, I promise!
I watched many videos of vocal teachers reacting to this song, but you are one of the very few who actually analyzed her voice and singing techniques. Thank you for making these videos for us. Very interesting and also very informative. 👍 ... oh, and also very entertaining. 🙂
So nice to see you diving into the metal side of music, so much talent. I would still love to see your reaction to Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers. She has an amazing range, great lows in songs like "Northwest Passage", and amazing highs like in "Tonight We Ride". She also does a lot of interviews with reactors, like the Charismatic Voice. They are such a talented band, and I think you would really enjoy something new. Love all your reactions as always, keep up the great work!
Knowing full well how this song goes and you already impressed two times between the distorted and regular voices before the real deal happens is **chefs kisses**
I like Courtney a lot, and this one take recording might be the coolest thing I've heard from her. I liked the music video version too, in that one for the last bit she didn't do the clean-scream-clean switchups like that though. When I saw the one take I was blown away. It's one thing to switch from verse to chorus or whatever, but she does it from word to word in the same phrase. Amazing control.
The Studio/Video version would be difficult to sing live due to the layering of the end part, she changed it to the flips to keep the impact but make it easier to preform live (from a technical side not a singing side).
@@sunshaker01 she did the Frye scream for “watching me” and the “all” and “yours” live during each set of her tour this year! Very cool to see her incorporate that as the fans took to it so well during this one take performance. Such an magical range.
Her vocals are incredible, those fast transitions leave me astouned everytime I hear them. This year they had over 100 concerts, so it really takes a lot of technique to be able to sing and do harsh vocals.Courtney said she is in vocal pause most of the time during concert season
This was my first time listening to this group as well, and I must confess she caught me off guard with the fast flipping. It was really cool. Thank you for this and every video you make, Jen.
FYI there's a couple of live vids from their current tour that are going off. One is Tatiana from Jinjer joining them onstage for Circle With Me, and the other is fellow metal vocalist Poppy joining them for Soft Spine
Great reaction and analysis. Courtney's an interesting metal vocalist because she can allow some true fold phonation into her harsh vocals without hurting her voice, which is quite tricky to do safely. It lets her play on the edge between clean, distorted, and fully harsh vocals in a fairly unique way, as well as being able to instantly shift between the three. As you mentioned, she also uses lots of variety in her vocals, and she does it in a way that aids storytelling. One thing that's not always obvious about her singing is that she places a big emphasis on rhythm in her vocals, and vocals seem to have a deliberate rhythmic relationship to the other instruments. Also going to second the suggestion for Unleash the Archers, as Brittney Slayes is an extraordinarily talented vocalist. Tonight We Ride is good if you want to get a sense of her insane range and power.
Great reaction Jen. I'm with you, this is not my preferred music; but I am fascinated with the ability to switch seamlessly between harsh and clear vocals.
The band is from Victoria, BC, Canada. Formed by Courtney LaPlante and her husband ,guitarist Mike Stringer, in 2017 after parting ways with their former band Iwrestledabearonce. Thanks for checking them out. Most of their songs are mixed harsh and clean vocals, the amount of one or the other varies somewhat. If you would like more, try Rule of Nines, Holy Roller, Constance, Blessed Be, or Rotoscope.
I discovered Spiritbox at about the same time as Jinjer and I love both bands. Even though I've been a musician since I was a kid and have played in multiple bands in several genres, I was never into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer and Spiritbox, which is not only due to the incredible vocals of Courtney and Tatiana, but also the interesting, sophisticated and varied songwriting and fantastic musicianship of both bands. Tatiana and Courtney both have the ability to instantly transition back and forth from their beautiful clean singing voices to powerful harsh vocals. Both of them have great harsh vocals, but I tend to prefer Tatiana's because it's power and deep tone.
These new-ish hybrid vocalists are & have been breaking & gaining ground. They're setting new bars to what is considered great vocal skill. And female vocalists are leading the charge. The flipping between harsh & clean vox near the end deserves respect alone. Imagine the time & practice it took to accomplish it. I encourage u to be brave & curious to take the dive into all that it takes to pull this off. Learning to be had...
Love Spiritbox, and Courtney has quite a few great live recordings to check out. I really hope you dive deeper. Try Blessed Be from the SiriusXM session, it's a personal favorite and an amazing performance
Ever since I saw this vid of Courtney flipping between clean and harsh vocals in the same words (first beakdown)... Litarally splitting sylabols, I was hooked! I've tryed to emulate this, but it's so hard!! Going from clean to harsh quickly is relativley easy, I recon I got that down. But going from harsh to clean in the next sylabol... Yeah thats just silly.
great work on your channel, keep doing what you're doing. i have two recommendations that are completely different, but from a musical standpoint pretty awesome. Sabaton - Christmas truce and Scorpions - A moment in a million years. Keep up the good work 🎵👍
well, if you're up for Courtney, you should give the one take playthrough from "To The Hellfire" from Will Ramos a try, what he does there is really beyond inhuman, and his vocal range is off the scale really.... you WILL be floored by that easily :)
Courtney is awesome. I agree with the others that have suggested checking out Brittney of Unleash the Archers. Tonight We Ride is a great example of her range and power. Cheers!
To me, it sounds like she is not so much flipping between the true and false folds, as much as engaging both a little on those more clean notes. Which ever it is, you have to have total control to not hurt yourself. And you can tell she's not hurting herself because she can sing the clean sections so well. I am still a bit new to harsh vocals myself, but it is clear to me that most tend to make it and extension of a more clean technique. They still have to warm, up, take care of their voice, and do most everything you do when you sing...they then just go a little further into a different sound. I find this less true in the people who just yell, but she is one of those few who really have mastered the voice to a whole new level. Others I have heard who master harsh vocals are Tatiana Shmailyuk from the band Jinjer, and Will Ramos from Lorna Shore...though usually he just does harsh vocals only, but I have heard him sing cleanly a few time, but he's probably the best harsh vocalist out there, as far as different sounds and styles of what he can do. It may be more advanced than you are ready for, but he's one you should work into someday. If you did go that rout I would suggest his "And I Return to Nothingness" One Take Playthrough it is a good beginning song to start with with no real effects added, just his skill.
Jennifer! Ok a day late again but I had a chili cook-off party to prepare for and attend yesterday. Hmm another metal singer. Well she has a nice voice outside of the guttural rasp from hell sound. Interesting ... she can flip from one word to the next. "This could ALL(distorted) BE (clean) YOURS (distorted). Not heard that type of quick change before though my exposure to metal is admittedly limited. Blue hair ... hey that's what you could do for your 100K celebration! Color your hair blue! It's your favorite color after all! 😁Good reaction/analysis as always Jen. 😊
The beauty about metal is that there are so many subgenres and then there's progressive on top of that so somewhere in between all of that everyone can find a reason to love metal. I mean just look at Sleep Token, it's something everyone can listen to. Keep seeking and you will find your subgenre.
Great reaction, Jen! It IS nice to hear a solo vocal again. And what a vocal. Courtney LaPlante's screams belong in their own category. I love Tati from Jinjer as a mistress of the metal growl, but Courtney's screams feel more natural, as though she's having a fight with an intimate friend. She uses them very effectively and tastefully. Spiritbox are all their own; you might appreciate their song Rule Of Nines. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/vVDXTFeGYwc/v-deo.html
Courtney LaPlante is amazing, Spiritbox is one of the most impressive new bands, and their latest album was genuinely superb from start to finish. One of the best new things in the metal genre.
Yeah imagine a thousand little girls watching this and practicing. The next generation of vocalists will be insane. The sacrifice their poor pets and moms and younger siblings will make will hopefully be worth it.
Nice from you to react more metalcore and metal in general. I have really grown liking screaming/growling and harsher vocals in general over the years and I appreciate people who likes or can appreciate vocal style like that even if they don't like it :)
I have known a lot of people who hated it at first but hanging around me and my friends, tough luck you're gonna be hearing a lot of it lol and after a while they started loving it.
The weird thing about Courtney is that, while what she is doing is definitely a false-fold scream, she makes it sound like a genuine scream of rage. If you'd like to see another example of this, check out Say Cheese, Cue, or Spit by Poppy. Now there's a girl who sounds in real distress - no, not distress, more like anguish - when she screams. Right down to the voice crack at the end.
Great reaction and yet another rabbit hole to check out, since I didn't know them before. So thanks for that.. 😛 And if you like interesting voices with lots of contrast and different sound qualities and don't know them yet, I can recommend Blind Guardian. They are around since 1984 and Hansi has a great voice. A really good video to see a good part of his vocals is this: The Bard's Song and Valhalla live in Wacken 2016 ua-cam.com/video/i-IcX_bccFc/v-deo.html Even if one does not like metal, The Bard's Song is just beautiful. Especially this performance with the energy from the crowd.
It's like Courtney decided to mess with vocal coaches and the like. Scream at the beginning, brethy and whispery through the track and then letting it all out at the end.
Don't worry, Jen, Courtney'll clear your sinuses. I have to say, though, this version is *considerably* breathier than the studio version. I kinda like it. Yes, Courtney's special talent is her ability to switch from true vocal folds to false and back again, all in the same breath. If you want to see how far she can go, try Holy Roller next. Or the vocal cover by Will Ramos, but I'm not entirely sure you're ready for that just yet. Not until you do some Lorna Shore, anyways. And if you want a REAL challenge, well, there's always Darko US... You *will* be spoiled by metal, Jen. One of us One of us
Glad you are giving some alternative styles a go. Something very different is a band called Leprous, not as heavy as the name suggests and the vocalist has a very unique sound, Einar Solberg. Try the live session - Nigthtime Disguise - ua-cam.com/video/hOMSRmfcvag/v-deo.html
One of my favorite reactions to this video! Courtney is incredible. You should react to The Mara Effect live at Silverside, and also her live one take of Rule of Nines! Rule of Nines is sooooo good.
So many react videos give here credit (where its definitely due) of being able to transition from melodic singing into her screams. But you're the first react video I have seen that gives her credit for the most difficult thing that she does absolutely seamlessly in going back into the melodic FROM her screams. And she does it without skipping a beat. It's truly incredible. Great review.
The break in her voice wasn't really purposeful; I've read that the day she did these, she was battling a little bit of a cold. Even those these say 'one take', she did more than one take this day. However, the one that was chosen had no editing in it, it was a full take.
The way she goes in and out of the scream , most natable as you caught it with the line "I held the power of a dying sun", is why I'm not a fan. Sounds so out of place.
I love how Courtney transitions from looking like she's wanting to seduce the microphone to wanting to fight the microphone
Those aren’t the same look?
I've watched every reaction to this song and that last part has everyone equally surprised.
She SINGS the word “be” in between screams. It is insane.
You are in fact going to become a Metal Head as you come to appreciate the talent and the emotions even more. And you're going to be happy about that, I promise!

And she just became a mom.
Tonight we ride is impressive
Her screams to cleans at the end are so bloody clean
I appreciate the genuine raw reaction to this video

So good! Thank you 😊
She is so amazing. Love your breakdown of how she does it
17:21 your reaction lol yes finally.
My favorite reaction to this song by far. Very educational too, very cool

You are seriously hearing the best at it then. Not even Floor Jansen can switch voice as readily and easily as Courtney.
I'll see them in a couple weeks and let you know they sound. Glad you checked them out!

Courtney has a rubber face, she really uses everything from her belly to the top of her head & out the lips. She's amazing
Beautiful, technical and entertaining! Thank you!
You described what I couldn’t figure out what was so dang addicting in this song. Great job
I just love to see your metal reactions and analysis. I hope see way way more in here! S2

Holy Roller is a good one. Such a lovely tune. I think you'd enjoy it's pleasantness. It has a little distorted Courtney but just a little.
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
Love your attention to detail!
Love Spiritbox, and Courtney has quite a few great live recordings to check out. I really hope you dive deeper.
Try Blessed Be from the SiriusXM session, it's a personal favorite and an amazing performance
I absolutely love Courtney and Tatiana.
Beautiful reaction. Grazie Gorgeous Jennifer
Her voice is so well trained it's scary
I don't really pay attention to the "analyzing" of the voice in songs, but I really love how you broke this down. Thumbs up👍

All of her vocal one takes are incredible
I'm here for the metal reactions.
The rocking back and forth for dramatic effect thing is recognizable especially to Canadians as a cheap 3D effect! (SCTV 3D)
