This song was written by John Deacon for his wife Veronica whom he started dating prior to Queen and has been married to since 1975 (they had 6 children).
Queen doing what Queen does....'Tie Your Mother Down' - 'It's Late' - 'Stone Cold Crazy' - Crazy Little Thing Called Love' and for good measure 'Under Pressure' with Bowie. Likely in that order.

John Deacon wrote this one, he really wanted the electric piano on it but Freddie refused to play it as he considered it an inferior instrument to his beloved grand piano. So John learned to play it himself and that is what you hear
Freddie rejected the electric piano outright when it was added to the equipment. John said ,” Okeh, I’ll just take it home and learn how to play keyboards…” This song was written by John *while* he had the instrument at home teaching himself, with his lovely bride carrying their first child there with him. If you want something very different from them "Sheer Heart Attack" is a great song. It was my gateway song to Queen. "Somebody to Love" is just beautiful.

Whenever I hear this I think about Freddie and Mary and how they were able to make their love transcend all the worldly obstacles. They were the pinnacle.
Should hit “Good ol fashioned lover boy” it just embodies early Queen to me. Great vocals and harmony. Also Cool Cat has a good bass line y’all might enjoy
As others mentioned, Deacon took their electric keyboard home to learn it and wrote this about his wife. BTW, my second favorite Queen song you have not listened to, Save Me. Listen to that live Montreal and you will see Brian on the piano. It is also Freddie’s best live vocals.
“You’re My Best Friend” was written by the band’s bass player, John Deacon, who has also written their mega-hit “Another One Bites the Dust”. Deacon composed this love song for his new wife, Veronica Tetzlaff, whom he married in January 1975, shortly before the album was recorded. Initially featured on A Night at the Opera in November 1975, it was later released as a single, backed with “‘39”. Although it was squeezed between two other hits, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Somebody to Love”, it nonetheless found a respectable place in Queen’s fans' ears and hearts, peaking at #7 on the UK Singles Charts.

'It's Late' is a banger!
Oh I love love love this. 💙💙
Whenever I hear this I think about Freddie and Mary and how they were able to make their love transcend all the worldly obstacles. They were the pinnacle.
I was 9 when this song was released as a single and I love it today just as much as I did then. Glad to see you enjoying one of my faaaaaaves…
Should hit “Good ol fashioned lover boy” it just embodies early Queen to me. Great vocals and harmony. Also Cool Cat has a good bass line y’all might enjoy
Written by the bass player John Deacon and he plays Wurlitzer piano on it and Freddie plays Celeste
Great harmonies as usual. Really love the walk up base lines!
As others mentioned, Deacon took their electric keyboard home to learn it and wrote this about his wife. BTW, my second favorite Queen song you have not listened to, Save Me. Listen to that live Montreal and you will see Brian on the piano. It is also Freddie’s best live vocals.
this album is classic and best listened to from start to finish to see the whole picture....
Incredible song, another great song written by John Deacon for News of the World album is Spread Your Wings, my personal fav
Queen II, A Night at the Opera, News of the World and Live Killers all are required listening -- in their entirety. Every song.
Excellent choice for review always loved this song ❤
One of my faves!❤
I never turn off a Queen song when it comes on the radio no matter how many times I’ve heard them.
Not a Queen fan but have always liked this a lot.
At my daughters wedding we had a completion . Each guest was to pay £1 and guess the song title from 200 songs for the bridal couple’s first dance. The winner got to choose a charity the money was donated to. You guessed which song they danced to!
Saw them in 1977, 78, ...twice after that.Great to have seen Freddie live! Mary Austin was his best friend. He left his entire estate to her....they were never married.
My daughter was going through very vey bad time.
This just captured my moment. I shared this with her.
Its now our song. 🙂
Very cool tune and one of their straight forward best!
This was the second track released as a single off the album, following Bohemian Rhapsody, and reached No.7 here in England.
