I was obsessed with The Fixx in the 80s. They were consistently good. “Red Skies”, “Stand or Fall”, “Saved by Zero”, “Secret Separation” “Are We Ourselves” and “Deeper and Deeper” are great songs to check out. I had forgotten about them so this was a nice little surprise!
The Fixx are a great example of the 80s done right. They brought a very unique and innovative sounds. Loads of great tracks. Red Skies at Night is probably my favorite of theirs.
also, Are We Ourselves. Definitely not one hit wonders; several top 40 hits. Saw them once as an opening act - not a huge fan but always had great bass players (I think I saw Dan K. Brown).
"Red Skies", "Stand or Fall", "Saved By Zero"‼️‼️‼️‼️ The Fixx is beyond EPIC in my book. Their strong, sexy style and sound is addictive in the best way. These are the gems you set on repeat because they get into your bloodstream. So great guys, thank you for hitting this band. Have a great week! I'm so happy you enjoyed 😊😊😊
"But it's easy to believe somebody's been lying to me! But when the wrong word goes in the right ear, I KNOW you've been lying to me!" Best two lines EVER!
In a 2012 interview with The Fixx lead singer/lyricist Cy Curnin, he explained the meaning of this song, which deals with malleable politicians. "If you're going to be a liar, you'd better be a damn good liar and remember what you said, or the whole thing's going to get pear shaped," said Curnin. "That was 30 years ago, and look where the system is now. A lot of people stand on ballot boxes and say a lot of things and lie in order to get elected and do nothing. So those songs I'm pretty proud of."
Wow, I had totally forgotten exactly how 80s this song was. I only realized when the first few notes kicked and A&A were both taken aback. I adore The Fixx, glad you guys liked it.
Me too, but I am wondering of the modern digitally remastered version is maybe slightly enhanced compared to what we listened to and purchased 40 years ago... It just didn't sound like I remember it.
@@TEverettReynolds Maybe? In retrospect, I realized that during the 80s, I was kind of ear-blind as to how very digital the digital parts were so we can't rely on my memory for this, but if you say it might be, I believe you.

Saw them open for the Police on the Synchronicity Tour at the Omni in Atlanta. If you think this studio version bounces all over the place with so much movement, hearing it live, bouncing off the arena walls was like a sonic funhouse hall of distorting mirrors. My brain was discombobulated for days…😂
I saw the Police Synchronicity Tour here at the Tacoma Dome in 1983. There were TWO opening acts: The Fixx and the Thompson Twins! What a great concert!!
Just saw The Fixx last week. All 5 original members still in the band. They sounded great. This may be their most known song but they have 4 or 5 other songs on the same level. Stand or Fall , Saved By Zero , Deeper and Deeper , Are We Ourselves , Red Skies At Night.
Omg Are We Ourselves! I'm seeing so many awesome songs being suggested, and I'm like "What's the title of the one I always jammed to?" 😂😂😂 GAWD I feel old when that happens!
The next The Fixx song reaction will have to be Red Skies At Night. I saw them in 1983 at the Day In The Green music festival for New Wave music. Rhe Police was headlining on their Synchronicity Tour. The Fixx was the second most popular band on the bill and played right before The Police. Great show!!
Saw them maybe 10y ago playing a free show at a local walking mall and they sounded AMAZING! What a group and Reach the Beach is an indisputable masterpiece!
"Stand or Fall" by The Fixx is a haunting song of the Cold War era. The lyrics are chilling and present the kind of mentality we were living in under that era, especially this part: Crying parents tell their children If you survive don't do as we did A son exclaims there'll be nothing to do to Her daughter says she'll be dead with you Those lyrics always hit hard as an air force kid.
Can’t really explain the Cold War. Sure Two Tribes shows it boldly, but it was an absolute underlying uneasiness, there were always talks and treaties and tests to keep it in the news cycle
Great review A+A! INXS has a similar sound and is an 80s iconic band that has been a bit overlooked by the channel. Devil Inside, New Sensation, Need You Tonight, and What You Need all deserve a listen to. Great Monday start!
Very much appreciate you getting to the Fixx! Saw them in Georgetown in ca. 1988 timeframe, way underrated. "Red Skies", "Secret Separation", "Saved By Zero", "Are We Ourselves", "Stand or Fall", "Driven Out", and "Sunshine in the Shade" are all are worthy of a look.
This was happening when MTV was skyrocketing and reshaping the musical landscape. The Fixx was a perfect fit for the music video scene. Worth watching to put this whole thing in context.
Dudes - this song, "Are We Ourselves", "Saved By Zero", "Stand or Fall", "Red Skies" - yeah, they were very 80s but this was a good band back in the day.
Andy, this definitely wasn't their only hit song. They were one of the bands that was an MTV mainstay back in the 80s. Red Skies, Saved By Zero and Stand or Fall were among their bigger hits alongside One Thing Leads to Another of course. They were a huge thing amongst us teens at the time.
Others already mentioned Red Skies at Night and Saved By Zero but Stand or Fall is even better to me. As for One Thing Leads to Another, it's pure 80s gold for sure. The bass line is absolutely relentless and Cy Curning's voice is absolutely unique.
yes i totally agree Stand or Fall is a favorite of mine when i was young but will say hearing One Thing Lead to another now that it was a great song too
Oh man- so many great songs by the Fixx! Red Skies, Saved by Zero, Stand or Fall, Driven Out. Cy Curnin has aa fantastic voice. Saw them live and they put on a great show.
One of the most under-appreciated bands of the 80's who still tour and sound great live. The Fixx and Talk Talk are two of the best to come out of Britain in that era.
The Fixx have always been one of my faves. Other hits to check out- Stand or Fall, Saved by Zero, (more funky guitar I appreciated even more as I got older) Deeper and Deeper (probably the single version), Secret Separation, Red Skies at Night
One of my top 5 all time favorite bands. They haven’t done a bad album. Jamie West Oram’s guitar sound is one of the most distinctive in all of rock. To me, this is what the 80’s was all about. They are still making albums and touring, Their live show is awesome. And they had a ton of hits. This is not the only one.
Now Imagine walking into a Club in the 80's and Hearing The " Dance Version " of this! While Girls with there MADONNA Look! And the Guys with the FLOCK of SEAGULLS Hair, are Bopping on the DANCE floor! Great Song! Good Reaction Guys! A+ indeed!
One of the most iconic songs of the 80s, for sure. I saw the Fixx a few years ago in concert and they are still a tight, professional band-put on a great show. Cy Curnin's vocals are consistently fantastic. For whatever reason, The Fixx has become lost in music history, aside from this track, but they were frequently appearing on the charts for years, always with a new take on their sound. I'd also recommend "Red Skies," "Secret Separation," and "Stand or Fall."
I have a great suggestion if you want early '80s Pure Power Pop. Marshall Crenshaw, either "Someday, Someway" or "There She Goes Again". Absolute top notch bangers.
Nice flashback to when The Fixx opened up in concert for The Moody Blues back in 1986. Saw them at an outdoor amphitheatre in San Diego. Lovely evening and a great memory.
Yay!!!! I know lots of people feel A&A never read the comments, but they really do! This always felt funky! How many times have I said or thought of that chorus in many situations? SO MANY!!
@@jgsrhythm100 I'll give them style points, lots of them. Would they be as popular without all the great looking videos? They have good songs, but I think their influence is heavier based on their look.
Hearing that chorus for the first time.. it's like peeking into Nirvana. I just discovered this track a couple days ago on the radio, and it's already one of my absolute favorites. Every second is full of beauty and passion, it's a masterpiece. I'm gonna have to dive into this album sometime.
Saved By Zero, Red Skies, Stand or Fall, and Are We Ourselves? are the other Fixx hits for you to checkout. OTLTA was definitely their biggest hit, but all in all they had a solid catalog. Very underrated 80s band.
They have a ton of great songs. Are We Ourselves, Red Skies, Deeper and Deeper, Saved by Zero, Stand or Fall, Beautiful Friction, Less Cities, etc etc. GREAT band. One of the best ever, and hugely underrated.
I was also into rock & metal but liked Adam & the Ants-- Antmusic For me the most uniqie and charismatic of that time period. They were like Medievel New Wave.
The Fixx is such a great band of the 80's...i saw them live at Beatys Music Garden back in 1989....they sound live exactly how you hear them on their tracks ❤
Cold war nuclear paranoia was a very palpable thing in the early 80's. So many artists hit on the theme. Still remember listening to some of these tracks going to college courses at the local Air Force Base, with nuke silos in full view.
The guitarist name is Jamie West Oram,.... he is a magician, and the most underrated guitarist of the era of the 80's, if you listen to their 6 or 7 hit songs of that era, you will be impressed..
I saw them in the early 80s opening (along with a reunion of the Animals) for the Police at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, all 3 groups sounded awesome, especially for a large outdoor venue. Other tunes by the them to check out are Saved by Zero (same album as One Thing), and Stand or Fall and Red Skies from the album before it, Shuttered Room..
Leave it to the Aussies to come out strong and direct. You can hear it in comparison to the English new wave bands of the time, who tend to be a bit more fey and face-touching. A&A definitely picked up on that.
the fixx were one of my fav british bands back in the eighties and nineties this is a great song also love their songs driven out and how much is enough⚛😀
The Fixx came across as a band that knew what it was doing at the time and were willing to innovate with their sounds. They only had a few songs that got radio play, but they always stood out from a lot of the other music at the time. As a Rush fan who was starting to get into new wave, punk, alternative, and underground stuff too, I was a huge fan of The Fixx, and I'm not really sure why they fell out of fashion compared to some other 80's stuff that still gets radio play, but shouldn't IMO. As others mentioned, Saved by Zero and Red Skies are worth checking out. I'd add that a few others that got some MTV play-time are also worth a listen, Deeper and Deeper, Stand or Fall, and Are We Ourselves?
It’s important to recognize how much MTV changed music in the 80s, especially early 80s. Commercially it was a visual medium as much as auditory. Songs were written for a visual medium in some cases. That being said, love The Fixx!
Totally agree.. how many of us here had the video running through our heads as A&A also listened along? Also love The Fixx, criminally underrated band with a bunch of great songs ..
Great reaction! Yes, this was huge but it was FAR from being their only hit! "Red Skies," "Saved by Zero," "Stand or Fall" - all were big hits and every bit as good as this! Interesting side note -- Lead singer Cy Curnin, who is English, has something in common with @Alex from Andy and Alex: Algerian ancestry.
There is so much going on in this song. Imagine being 20 something when this came out. You’re in college, partying at the local bar and this song comes on. Everyone rushed to the dance floor. It was a fantastic song to dance to.
The Fixx is definitely 80’s and Bangers is their middle name. Saved by Zero has a beat that sticks with you. Stand or Fall is another great tune. I’m 65 and widowed. When I hear these tunes they transport me back to happier times.
Andy and Alex, you have to check out 'Deeper and Deeper' by The Fixx. Especially with the headphones on. Great underrated band and great live as well. Really enjoyed your reactions to this one!
That’s hilarious, Alex, because the whole time I was thinking, “This song was CONSTANTLY on the radio and MTV back in the day, but I don’t know a single word other than the chorus. How can that be?” 😂
Such 80's gold! Saved by Zero is another banger by them
YEEESSSSSS!👏👏👏👏👏👏
red skies at night
Yeah, Zero just as big of a hit from this same LP. Stand or Fall, Red Skies singles from their debut LP 🔥
In the 80s it would be “S” for most of their music.
I second that suggestion, 'Saved By Zero' is another good one.
Always loved the lyric "But when the wrong word goes in the right ear, I know you've been lying to me"
Cy Curnin is great on vocals. Love The Fixx. Saved by Zero and Red Skies should be next.
Yeah, agree, I'd even rate those songs better than this one.
I would vote for Red Skies next. It's more different than this one.
Along with "Stand Or Fall".

The Fixx was LOADED with Great songs~~~ They are a Hidden Gem of the 80'sThewy
It’s important to recognize how much MTV changed music in the 80s, especially early 80s. Commercially it was a visual medium as much as auditory. Songs were written for a visual medium in some cases. That being said, love The Fixx!
Totally agree.. how many of us here had the video running through our heads as A&A also listened along? Also love The Fixx, criminally underrated band with a bunch of great songs ..
Saw the Fixx in the late 80s early 90s at my college and they were unreal...so good....and LOUD...just blew the place away....
Morning Allison
@@Shadowrider1872 Hey John! Happy Monday!!! 🥰
There is so much going on in this song. Imagine being 20 something when this came out. You’re in college,
partying at the local bar and this song comes on. Everyone rushed to the dance floor. It was a fantastic song to dance to.
The Fixx have a song called Driven Out. It's worth checking out even if you don't react to it.
The Fixx is definitely 80’s and Bangers is their middle name. Saved by Zero has a beat that sticks with you. Stand or Fall is another great tune. I’m 65 and widowed. When I hear these tunes they transport me back to happier times.
Regardless of genre, a great hook is a great hook :)

That's not the only one big song. There are many big songs, from the Fixx and many great albums, that you two have yet to discover 👊💯
This whole album is a great one.
YES... not one bad song, and the sound is incredible.. I still have my original LPs, in great condition, and the CDs too.
First concert (14yrs) with friends, fall 1984, Winnipeg Arena.....great live. Cheers guys
Oh yes, they have more. I am going to choose "Saved by Zero," one of the most gorgeously melancholy pop rock songs ever.
Reach the Beach is one of my fave albums of all time, The Fixx one of my fave bands! So happy you listened to them.
I LOVE this song!! Can't sit still on this one💃🎶🕺
Saved By Zero, Stand or Fall, Red Skies... GREAT songs you will love!
A true banger classic. Glad you boys appreciated it!
One of my absolute favorites! I dare someone to stay still while hearing it. Have a listen to some of their other hits.
I saw The Fixx recently! Same line up! They are sooooo good! Totally underrated. They are more of an alt rock band, tbh. Class band. ❤
Just bought a ticket for tomorrow night on Long Island.. 😂
How can that be?” 😂
Always been a fan of this song! The Fix has some banger.
