  • The highly anticipated Hardway Learning MFR Garage Audi RS3 is back at it. Sorry this has taken so long to release, but I wanted to make sure I had all of the pieces together to explain the story of our trials and trepidations to get this car running correctly. This video doesn't fully encompass what we've went through so please leave a comment telling us to share the full story and I'll spend some time explaining it all.
    Anyway, we had a chance to bring the freshly built 2018 Audi RS3 back to our home town drag strip, Rockfalls Raceway just outside of Eau Claire Wisconsin. We've been here a few times, once with stock turbo and Custom Code Stage 2 tune. This was where we first blew up the motor, making a small cavity between cylinders 1 and 2 not only on the block, but also on the head. From here, the motor was sleeve with LA drive sleeves, full ferrea drivetrain (valves and springs) as well as an SRM GTX 35 Hybrid turbo that should be good for around 700whp.
    A year later we were back here to test out our new hybrid setup and ran into more problems. The hybrid manifold couldn't hold up to the continued launches we put it through and decided to crack causing the whole turbo to freely spin.
    After we pulled the turbo and manifold we patiently waited for the car to be reassembled, held back by the manifold repair by SRM we finally decided to purchase a full frame kit. To our delight the new full frame kit was incredibly fast, but we quickly realized that this grenaded our sleeves. The motor once again had to be pulled from the car and sent back to St. Charles Garage just outside of Chicago, Illinois.
    From here SCG diagnosted the sleeves as having cracked and failed. The options were to rebuild the existing block with fresh sleeves (not from LA) or run a fresh DNWA shortblock. We opted for a fresh block with no sleeves and that is what we ran in this video to finally crack into the 9's.
    Let it be known that this was with 200tw tires, no haldex controller. This car could probably reel in a few more .100's of a second with better tires, smaller brakes, and lighter doors.

    as much as I loved the multiple rs3's we'd had I don't miss the headaches associated with the plate forum, the front assembly drivetrain and trans is bad ass but so hate the haldex. Please do an update on the RS6 if you guys can, you guys rock!

    How does that even happen to a spark plug? The piston smacked it?

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  8 місяців тому

      That's a good question, we melted a piston and part of the cylinder so maybe from detonation there was too much heat?

    The famous "1000HP" car with 850 HP ;)
    What sleeves were you running and who sleeved it? If you don't wanna say who, can you at least say what sleeves they were?

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  9 місяців тому +1

      They were LA dry sleeves. Supposedly they were pulled from shelves shortly after they were installed, but we didn't have issues for two years until we put the bigger turbo on. *1000hp crank if we're being accurate 😂

    Maybe close the spark plug gap ? I used to run 0.018 on my high boost setup. it might be blowing the spark out on the big end.

      We had them gapped to the same gap other but turbo cars were using. I'm guessing they were just old or we have a failing ignition coil. We did some logs with fresh plugs and it seemed to be okay again, but who knows if it will show up with a heat soaked day at the track again

    Serious question, why SRM and not an Iroz kit?

      It was the quickest available at the time, we were sitting on a dead car for a really long time.

    I see a fully modified car but no datalogger on your phone or laptop, why? Stupid to me. Always datalog, always folks.

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  7 місяців тому

      We ran a datalog on our final pass, but definitely a good recommendation.

      @@HardwayLearning Happen to share the last run's log? Curious to see what actually happened. How much IGA were you running and how much boost?

    • @HardwayLearning
      @HardwayLearning  7 місяців тому

      @@VuBeClan we borrowed the laptop of our tuner at the time so I don't have a copy unfortunately. All fueling, boost and ignition was within what he's used to seeing so he thought spark plugs or coils was a good place to start.
