  • I created this video with enthusiasm and happiness. The shorter, EDITED version bypasses the trip to and the other stops we made going to the siding where the engines are stored.

    These engines are SD70M's and UP is storing them until there is upturn in traffic patterns; the reason they're stored in the desert is because it doesn't rain very much and they won't rust and corrode.

    there are 300 locomotives end-to-end, and a Union Pacific spokesman says they are waiting for Supply to meet demand, and then they will be called to action once more....

    8-5-17 they are still there as of now. Noticed them last year on my way to New Mexico. I only saw them from I - 10 as I passed by at 80mph. Some seem to have more graffiti on them. I hope they don't rot out there and go to waste. I'm 43 and have been a rail fan all my life.

      It's silly that the security is all over anyone with a camera stopping to take a photo or video, but we noticed the increase of graffiti as well. Thanks for watching!

    great find, its rare to get so close enough to touch locomotives since they usually have people around them, whenever i do see a parked loco im always hesitant to go up to it in case anyone is watching

    I counted over 200 using Google Maps. These cost 1.5 to 2.5 million dollars each. Makes me sick.

      Hello Paul,
      Since this was uploaded back in February, there have been more added. This version the music was a bit loud, I have since toned down the volume and it can be found higher in the list.
      Thanks for watching.
      We spoke with a Union Pacific worker that was out there on one of our trips, he said basically these along with several hundred others are being idled all over the west. Mainly because a reduction in the freight, mostly coal hauling.

    Evidently all older D/C Units, and not as efficient as the new A/C Units.

      Hello Tom,
      We were out there just yesterday and Union Pacific was doing some work, long story short I asked one of the supervisors what the reason was. He stated that because of a slow down in freight these engines are being stored till they are needed again. Currently there are around 250 there now, and that number will go up to 380. I Heard this number quoted from an episode of Modern Marvels, but each unit is roughly 5 million. This was back in the early 2000's, so I'm sure they are more now. 380 X 5million= 1.9billion dollars. That is of course if the numbers are correct. He also said there are two more places like this one that are holding about the same number each. Unbelievable.
      Thanks for watching.

    Those engines still look to be in very good condition; the paint still shines there's little rust, nothing vandalized and even the rubber air hoses aren't cracked or split yet. What a waste of money!

    I saw a documentary on television a few months ago, where UP has a number of locomotives stored on a 4.3 mile track in the middle of the Arizona desert. These are waiting for more business, and then they will be used again. Most looked like they were hardly used. I have seen other railroads do the same. BNSF etc, but elsewhere in the country. This looks like the one's in Arizona.

    • @janetelizabeth
      @janetelizabeth 6 років тому

      Arizona is a good place for storage due mainly to the extremely low humidity.

    Could you please tell me which road did you take that let you get up close to the train (i.e. no fence)? From Google map, I noticed there are several branch roads off Emprita that lead to the rails, are they all accessible to public? Thanks for the video, it's very informing.

    • @marionmitchell261
      @marionmitchell261  6 років тому

      Hello Marty,
      Once you exit Emprita and you come to the stop sign, turn left and go over the cattle guard. Take that road, I don't know exactly, approx. a quarter mile. On the right you will see where other vehicles have driven off the main traveled section. Follow that trail west, and you will come to a concrete pond, and rusted tank. I ended up walking the rest of the way, because I did not want to scrap what paint there is on the truck off.
      If you continue onward south, from the stop sign, you will come to the Emprita Ranch entrance. You can follow the fence line west and it will lead you to a small area.
      Be warned, we were very lucky and fortunate to have gotten the footage we did. Since then there are a LOT of security. As long as you do not cross the fence near the track, I believe you should be ok.
      Good luck and post a link on what you video!!
      Thank you for watching.
      Marion.

    Were you allowed in or is there a way around the fencing?

    • @marionmitchell261
      @marionmitchell261  6 років тому

      Hello Alex,
      We happened to be at the right place and at the right time, I walked approx. 3/4 of a mile, and at that time the fencing was pretty much non existent. We went back out about two months later, and WOW they ramped up not only the fencing, but the roving patrols as well.
      We encountered a security guard, that took his job very seriously, and listened politely to how they have installed cameras and motion detectors. We said thank you and went on our way. This was in March of '17. My thoughts on the situation, for all the expense of storing these, wouldn't it be cheaper to keep them running or sell them.
      Thank you for watching.
      Marion.

      Hi Ric,
      We were lucky to converse with a Union Pacific employee and he said this started back in late 2015, I didn't think to ask the month, but he did say that there are two more areas like this in the western united states, and BNSF is also doing similar things as well. It is concerning why is there not a continued need for these machines to be used......
      Thank you for watching!!

    Hi, I liked the music, it was kinda boring just riding to get where the engines were. Anyway, I recently was at the Tucson RR Museum at the old SP RR Station in downtown. A volunteer there retired from UP, they are stored in AZ just like aircraft, its dry and relatively warm till traffic picks up. PS everyone, a word to the wise, UP is not a very friendly RR, I believe they prosecute, and gee I wonder why when people go and steel stuff off locomotives.

    Thanks for an informative video. The first few locomotives are GE C40_8Cs. Behind them what looks like the wide or safety cab version. Then a long line of GM EMD SD 60Me. From what I have been able to find out, the C40_C will all be sold to other railroads or leasing companies, some C40 wide cabs may be sold, the SD 60Ms are earmarked to be rebuilt with new engines and cooling systems.

      Yes they are, in fact I believe they may have added more, but have not gotten an up close and personal look at them in a while. I will say this for anyone going out there now, security is very tight and they love to make their presence known. I understand fully the need for security, but there are two individuals that take their job performance over the top. This is my opinion, but if Union Pacific would have an open house sort of thing, invite railfans and the public, let people take pictures, videos it would prove to be a public relations bonanza! There are of course limitations, the details would have to be worked out, but still I think it would be a HUGE win!
