I had the opportunity to ride on a freight train once. It still blows my mind how something that big can ride on rails that aren’t even that far apart. It felt like we were going to tip over the whole time
My father in law was railroad maintenance supervisor in northern Minnesota on the iron range. When I was back there vacation one summer he took myself and four of his grandkids and rode down the tracks on one of those hi rail trucks that go on the tracks. It was awesome.
This is an absolutely cool video. This was the career that I wished I had pursued when I was a kid. I think it was just a childhood dream however. I would love to be allowed to just sit in the cab one of those locomotives to see what it is like. I wouldn't care what railroad it is that would let me do that. Just as long as I could do it. Just once.
It’s such an awesome feeling to sit in the engineer’s seat of a locomotive and blow the horn, you feel so powerful. Here’s me blowing the horn: ua-cam.com/video/z2PAk4MQK0Y/v-deo.html
As a retired conductor let me say, you guys need to get a life. There's nothing wrong with this video. As far as UP is concerned they are truly rail fan friendly. Enjoy the video boys!
I wish I even come close to this opportunity to do something like this in my life. I envy the railroad guys and gals! Often love watching them pass in Nebraska when I'm driving truck.
I live about 3 miles from the Roseville marshaling yard in Citrus heights C,A and I get all the sounds. If the breeze blows in the right direction, they sound like their opperating 3 blocks from my house. We got snow throwers that head up to Truckee when conditions call for em. In and out of the yard 24/7 they run from North to south and all points between.
Once a specific locomotive has been assigned primary status in a consist, that remains the locomotive used for communications purposes, no matter in which direction until that train arrives at its final destination.
I love trains for many reasons. On a per ton of cargo transported, they are highly efficient and cheap compared to other land based methods. I also love diesel engines for which I believe all trains that carry cargo now have (correct me if I'm wrong). I also love the sounds of a train. I would love to go for a ride in one but have no idea how to go about it.
Pretty humorous. It's a private train on UP, they can invite anyone they want into the cab. Since it is an Operation Lifesaver Corporate Passenger Train based on the verbage in the cab the whole goal in operating the train in the first place is public awareness of the program. The only item that might have been legally questionable is allowing the passenger at the controls and he is a jump seat in back. It's perfectly fine and isn't breaking any rules or laws. They probably wanted you to film to capture anyone going around the gates or other near misses to post on UA-cam like you did here.
"don't film the controls?" whats that going to prevent? any train simulator on the market show how you control just about any locomotive ever made. Still a good video though :)
Wow, the conductor has a microphone that actually works. That last bit at the end about which applies to most Canadien locomotives. They are the best in class with amenities such as a microwave oven, hot plate with a coffee pot and a scant few even have a retractable wash basin like some CSX units.
@@AwesomeDesertTrains Most if not all of the Canadian National units have actual plug in fridges. C.P. might have the same. Most class one railroads have ice boxes that you have to fill with ice.
I actually like these videos. The first one I saw was in Claremore Oklahoma where I live. We have two major train tracks that crisscross in town. You have one train track Going north to south and another East to West. Even though I know that isn't extremely rare it is in Oklahoma. Anyways someone did a video from inside the locomotive. It was cool.
I work for CSX and that's different for us but we still do that and your right Riograndefan... SO TRUE... CSX How Tomorrow Moves also I saw that exact loco somewhere it was in Chicago if i am not mistaking
Awesome video! Really great camera angles. But my main question is, why were you not permitted to film the controls? Anyone with Train Simulator would know what they were any way. So, what was the big deal? Again though, amazing video with great camera angles. Subscribed!
Im ah big railfan out here and listen to the scanner on this Caliente sub- i here the omaha dispatcher only on 160.515- whats the channel to here the engineer?
I really enjoy this movie The Union Pacific house living along the CSX railroad Southeast Central Indiana Union Pacific Rose through our small town every now and then.
the only people allowed on the cab is the crew or other crew members who are off duty and engine pulling to another location unless your invited which in that case the crew takes a risk because if you get injured its there asses. So its not illegal to be on rail property if given permission
Yes Andrew I'm a 35 year old engineer in Wyoming and yes that is the sound from inside the cab. And to the other guy yes...cab can be bumpy from the track joints but the camera makes it worse
was that the horn of the train actually sounded like from inside the cab, if so, really was expecting it to sound a heck of a lot louder than that......and I have always wondered what the difference is when the conductor is supposed to sound the horn and when the ring the bell, all that I know so far is that he is supposed to sound the horn before he comes to any railroad crossing.......
Andrew Silva theres not so bright people that complain about how loud the horn is and the railroad is forced to make some places on horn zones, also on the ES44AC to increase crew comfort 4 out of the 5 horns face backwards, but it still meets decibel level requirements at crossings (thats one of the things I dont like about GE)
Why grade crossing horn sequence at 3:15 ? Cannot hold the camera more steadily? Cab much quieter than the Amtrak cab I was in. (I was required to wear earplugs, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes.)
Personally, I think it was a really cool video. If the officials sanctioned this documentary to be filmed while in-cab, then more power to ya,pal. Thanks for putting this up.
The engineer controls the entire train. He has the authority and the right to invite people into the cab as long as they do not touch any of the controls.
That FRA rule pertains to the operators of the train. As long as they're doing what they are paid to do, why would a person, not a train crew member, not be allowed to film? Because a Engineer in So. Cal was texting while operating solo and plows headon into a Union Pacific freight, no one is allowed to film a train in motion from the cab? I'll check with the FRA on this and get back to you.
I agree with you. I don't know what this guys malfunction is, but the FRA clearly states what the "Crew" can and cannot do while performing their duties of operating a train. Nowhere does it state that someone else (a Non member of the crew) cannot film while the train is moving. There are too many people jumping through their asses trying to make a big deal out of nothing. You did nothing wrong.
DESPITE SOME NEGATIVE COMMENTS HERE,I ENJOYED TRAVELLING THROUGH YOUR COUNTRY VIA THESE TYPE OF VIDEO'S,I HAVE DONE SIMILAR HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA AND I HAVE ALSO FILMED FROM TUGBOATS AS WELL,THANKS FOR THE RIDE.
as a train conductor or engineer what do you do if you need to use the restroom? does the engine have restrooms? do you have to go to another car to use the restroom? any info would be greatly appreciated.
+BALLISTIC BUBBA There's also an unwritten rule, don't poop in the bathroom of the lead unit, wait until you stop and go use the one on the second unit. It's usually not a big deal for a conductor to take a quick leak but the engineer needs to be strategic about it if we're moving.
+BALLISTIC BUBBA I think there is a bathroom in every engine. It right there where you enter,at the front of the train..(Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)
Was a UP conductor out of Vegas. 32 years. Made that trip Vegas to Milford Utah so many times I lost count.
Lay offs just as often as everywhere else in the system? Used to work for UP north platte 4 but furloughed in nov 2010.
how many rail miles was that run?
247 miles
You go from Las Vegas to Milford going northbound.. what about going south bound? Is it Las Vegas to yermo or west Colton?
Vegas to yermo
I was a conductor for UP for 10 years. This brings back many memories.

OTC Probably retired.
You retired after ten SHORT years?!
How did you do it? Where does one start?
me too

For those of you wondering, this locomotive is actually UP 7482. You can catch a quick glimpse of the number at 14:40.
“Dispatch to UP 4589”
@@jordantherailfanner7506 Probably 4589 is on the other end and they swapped ends.

I wish I even come close to this opportunity to do something like this in my life. I envy the railroad guys and gals! Often love watching them pass in Nebraska when I'm driving truck.
Those "railroad gals" are a big reason why guys can't get a job with them.

Personal electronics in use in the cab, ie. Video camera. I think both the Railroad and the FRA would frown.
