I don’t know if anyone has explained the historical / economical reasons of the meat tea, but I’ll try and provide some background. In the colonial era, there were a lot of poor Chinese immigrants who came to Malaysia to work as manual labor, especially around the docks. In order to serve them a good source of protein at a low price, the bones and offal were used. Also the herbal components of the dish was thought to restore the stamina while working and sweating in such a hot and humid climate. Keep up the good work!
@@lipton3120 I think many say that it originated from Klang because it used to be a mining area where a lot of Chinese miners worked (though this is just what my grandparents told me).
If you ever visit Malaysia again and try Bak Kut Teh, try the ones in Klang near KL. They have two types, soup based and dry ones. Recommend with white rice. There are come places that served rice cooked in chicken broth.
Nikita 😍 I can't live without watching him smiling and dancing? Haha... Amazing kitties, were beautiful, the bus ride was very funny but the tea bone 😍 I had eaten the intestine and the stomach with no objections and the broth OMG, definitely great. Thank you guys, was awesome 😄
The brown looking pastry is call 'U Char Kuey '. It's basically deep fried dough and how u eat this is by dippin it in the meat broth for little while and pop it into ur mouth.
On the "buns"; it's actually a Chinese speciality called "Pau". If you go to a Chinese restaurant, you'll get much more choices for the fillings. The paper at the bottom peels off better if the bun was fresh. It gets soggy after several reheats or if it's been sitting in the steamer for over a day. That first piece of organ meat that Allison pulled out was actually tofu skin.
Bak Kut Teh was a herbal doctor prescription at the very beginning. It was not chefs' invention. It was taken as medicine by people who worked as coolies or miners, but, later, people found it quite tasty and gradually it became a popular dish. If you don't like eating internal organs, tell the restaurant you only want meat and bones.
It's chinese "you tiao"! Or deep fried dough sticks, when we eat meat bone tea (bak kut teh) we usually dip it into the soup and eat it! Chinese usually have this with porridge too! I'm from Singapore and the meat bone tea we have over here is different from the Malaysian style ones, some places serve the soup more pepperish and less 'herbal' in taste! If you guys come over to Singapore, you should try the meat bone tea here too :)
You have to go and visit Borneo! Our parents are from Kuching, Sarawak and we've both been there many times. Our top recommendation would be to eat Sarawak Laksa which is both of our all time favourite dishes. It's really different to any laksa you would have tried before (Anthony Bourdain called it the"Breakfast of Gods"!). Also recommend taking the time to go see the Orangutans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve. If you're travelling up north to Sabah and feeling like a big hike, check our Kota Kinabalu. We haven't been yet but it's on our bucket list! Feel free to reach out if you do end up heading there 👍🏼😀
That's what local Penangites called "Green house (the shop) Bak Kut Teh (The dishes)". The thin pieces in there are the dried bean curd :) Glad that you guys were in Penang!
If you guys ever order bak kut teh again, just ask for the pork meat. Ribs are always a good option. Else by default they will give you the full works (including offals) 😄
East Malaysia is like the best place I can live in. I know there's a little problem these days that they are facing but it is still good. Keningau is my father's birth place and I just enjoy my life whenever I was there. The things there might be slightly costly than in West Malaysia but the scenary from the Crocker Range is worth all of it. I would suggest a visit to Keningau. The town is not really much but in the middle of the journey from KK/Api-api to Keningau have some of the best scenary I have seen.
Hi..I'm from kuching sarawak...u should come to kuching on July..more thing to do here on that months..we got rainforest world music festivals..and kuching food festivals..and on August we got Sarawak dragon boat festival...so if u coming in early years is a bit empty..
Try a boat ride up Malaysia's longest river and arrange a few nights stay with the indigenous tribes of Sarawak. Fly to Sibu and take the boat ride up to Kapit and Belaga onwards. Need to arrange the accomodation with a tour agency though.
The reason why offals and organs are sometimes included is because the locals were poor a few generations before this. Back then slaughtering a pig was considered a great sacrifice and wastage was discouraged. The Bah Kut Teh in Penang probably didn't taste so great because it is not the place to eat the best Bah Kut Teh. You would find that in Klang, my hometown. Anyway, hope you enjoyed your trip here in Malaysia!
You guys had the worst buns aka 'pau' possible XD.. To go Malacca, find Low Yong Moh restaurant at Jonker street and get the best buns EVER! Trust me, they are THAT good! I'm a food blogger btw! Glad you came to M'sia, hopefully you could come again and we'll show you the very best M'sia has to offer!
Hi there, thank you for the video. You guys are so cute I was giggling all the way. The white buns you were trying on the bus are called Pau's "pow" it's steam cooked not baked. Yeah that happens, the paper gets stuck when you try to peel it. Just peel it off slowly. Theres actually lotsa choice of filling. It's a Chinese dish, but they have Malay version that you guys tried. Hope you guys enjoyed West Malaysia.
Borneo has a lot of sea, mountains, jungles n interesting food here! Do come n visit. I'm from Sarawak. Part of Malaysia, in the borneo island. U hav to come n enjoy it urself.
yeah i haven't seen too many cats here either. hawaii on the other hand...they are everywhere! lots of feral cats and lots of chickens, just roaming around lol
Is that red bean pao? Any pao is best eaten warm/steaming hot, where it is soft, and the aroma of fresh pao.. Bah kuh teh, you can choose what parts of the pork..Sweetness is from the Meat..Alot of meat and bones.. Bah kuh teh is also nice pipping hot..Dip that fried flour crullers into it to soak..like how you dip bread into soup.. same..WE do not really take the rice and dip it directly into the soup..And bah kuh teh is nice to have together with chinese tea like Ti kuan yin (oo long tea) , Pu er tea, Cha wong; Not jasmine (too light)..
When are you back in Malaysia again? I hope there is a nice Malaysian who will volunteer to bring you around and explain the culture behind the foods you guys tried. Haha. I love bak kut teh! Yum!
Grab used to have a partnership with Lyft, but it gots disbanded earlier this year. The only thing I didn't like about Grab is that you had to pay cash when you're ride was over, at least in Manila when I was there.
Awww we wanted to see more Nikita butt! JK... I love watching your videos, you guys do a wonderful job of sharing your travels with us and make us feel like we've been there too. Thanks and keep it up! Safe travels to you all.
Please see the orangutans at Nyaru Menteng on Borneo - it's run by a wonderful woman called Lone Droscher. She's rescued hundreds of orphaned orangs over the years.
12:17 Noo! u should not dip the "you tiao" or deep fried dough sticks with chili, it spoil the flavor, we dip with the soup or soya bean or porridge only
Bah Kut = pork ribs.. Teh = soup. If you dont like the internals, you can ask them not to put it. And u eat the meat with bird eyes cili + soya sauce + garlic
The deep fried looking dough is chinese donut or youtiao. Idk what the malaysian calls it. They usually long. I guess they made it small and round like that so its easier to eat. U can just drop em in the bakuteh soup. In chinese dishes, its the perfect accompaniment w congee. Really enjoying ur vids guys. Thanks for sharing 🙃
fair play! loving the channel BTW, always look forward to my nearly daily dose of ur adventures... looking forward to when ur back over in the UK making more vlogs! ;)
You should Have try the white steam bund in a proper cantonese Dim sum restaurant within KL, which offer BBQ pork inside the steam bun. There's also a baked version of the exact bun, Its roasted color Instead of white outside. I think you bought the malay version Regarding the tea bone broth, I never understand the taste, to me, it taste like semi sweet medicine 😰 😠 , therefore Its NOT For me, especially I cannot find veggie in it
Thanks for the comment! We definitely try to ask most of the time, but the guy was very busy and was having a hard time understanding us 👍 Unfortunately traveling like we do means you'll inevitably have to eat something without quite knowing what it is.
The Endless Adventure if u do come back for a visit to Malaysia do let me know. I live in KL... I will bring u all the best food in Malaysia... the best Bak Kut Teh is in Klang...
In malaysia we don't use toilet paper to clean ourselves. We use water that's why there's hose in our washroom. Toilet paper only to wipe after we use water. Toilet paper provided in bigger malls . But its good to always bring ur own it'll be useful.
Nikita, i love red bean buns and all buns! the paper are not suppose to stick if used “quality” paper and steamed “right” so don’t buy from convenience stores if you want a better experience;)
You guys are perhaps a bit too "American" about offal. Find a good restaurant which sells organ meat properly prepared and you'll find it tasty and nutritious. You liked haggis in Scotland right? That's pretty much full of offal!
ummmm..I guess the culture dictates what's in the soup, but.....ewww...I have a friend in the US who was born and raised in Malaysia, I have questions! Nice strut in the background, Nakita....followed up by the butt...whew!

do you think it originated from klang as some claim?
@@lipton3120 I think many say that it originated from Klang because it used to be a mining area where a lot of Chinese miners worked (though this is just what my grandparents told me).
@@emily_cjw An interesting insight
Great video guys! Make me want to visit Malaysia for sure!

We'll save the intestines and stomach for you next time 😂 it was quite a fun day!

Hello Eric Allison very entertaining video, specially when you guys trying the meat bone tea. I'm Dennis from Kuala Lumpur
haha.. Allison's reaction at 7:16 is great! And what a way to get welcomed to Penang. - Trevor
😂 maybe I should work on my poker face...
In Borneo, go to the Rainforest Discovery Centre, near Sepilok, where you have a good chance of seeing wild Orang Utan. There is good accom near RDC.
That's what local Penangites called "Green house (the shop) Bak Kut Teh (The dishes)". The thin pieces in there are the dried bean curd :) Glad that you guys were in Penang!
Good to know! It was so foreign and wiggly that we assumed it was some organ, haha!
fantastic video guys :)) ..that food at the end looked awesome even with the not so nice bits in lol
If you guys ever order bak kut teh again, just ask for the pork meat. Ribs are always a good option. Else by default they will give you the full works (including offals) 😄

Bone tea is is broth made from the bones. They put vinegar in it to draw out the calcium so you get the benefit of it.
Is that so?first time i hear about this
The paper is to prevent the bun from sticking on the place where they steam it.
Bak kut teh is definitely no.1 Malaysian dish. The long things are intestine. The thin ones are tofu skin, I believe.
Nikita is great. He needs his own spin-off series (I.e the Frazier to your Cheers)
We keep trying to get him to start his own channel...maybe one day he'll do it 😉

You should try going to one of the islands on the eastern side of the West Coast. Redang island or Perhentian island are great. Crystal clear waters.

That "organ meat" actually looks like tofu skin aka bean curd skin which is pretty delicious.
"Baby got back"... now that song is stuck in my head. Thanks Nikita :D :P

Do you guys have any plans for East-Malaysia? The nature here calls for you!
Not quite yet, but we'll definitely have to get over there some time soon!
"Manis" its meaning so sweet
You wouldn't get me on a plane but I think I would really enjoy the bus or the train
Bah Kut = pork ribs.. Teh = soup. If you dont like the internals, you can ask them not to put it. And u eat the meat with bird eyes cili + soya sauce + garlic
Where’s Nikita’s girlfriend? I feel he’s very sad since she’s left you guys.
It makes me so happy that you both are such cat people.
😹
the tea is referring to the broth

Shall go to Cameron highland
What happened to the Meet and Greet in London???
We already had it (the vlogs are a bit backed up at the moment). But we'll have some clips from the meetup in an upcoming video 👍

Novita Benjamin in the local Penang dialect it’s called “ew cha Kuei”, but “you tiao” in mandarin.
Thanks for letting us know! They were absolutely delicious, especially when soaked in the soup :)
It's called cakue in Bahasa Indonesia. I rarely eat it, but I love it.
I thought western people would have hard time with the chinese herbal taste, glad you enjoy it!
that dinner looks rank! yuk!
It definitely caught us a bit off guard 😂 but the broth really was pretty delicious!
fair play! loving the channel BTW, always look forward to my nearly daily dose of ur adventures... looking forward to when ur back over in the UK making more vlogs! ;)

Pull out the paper bun. It's for cooking only. Not stick to the steamer
I make Bak Kut Teh with only spare ribs :)
Now that sounds delicious!
Should have ordered Bak Kut Teh ribs only
U guys actually need a good local traveling guide around malaysia...
In malaysia we don't use toilet paper to clean ourselves. We use water that's why there's hose in our washroom. Toilet paper only to wipe after we use water. Toilet paper provided in bigger malls . But its good to always bring ur own it'll be useful.
Wow, u know it’s meat bone tea in mandarin lol 👍
normally when it's Petronas Gas Station has steamed buns...they don't taste good...Muslim made.
Welcome to Teh Terik. Be careful patting random kitties or pups, as M’sia isan endemic Rabies country.
nikita bud
My family's favourite bak kut teh...... but I prefer chik ku teh😁😁
Some peeled the paper off before eating bun.
Nikita, i love red bean buns and all buns! the paper are not suppose to stick if used “quality” paper and steamed “right” so don’t buy from convenience stores if you want a better experience;)
That bun is bao

When you see baby abandoned kittens like that you should try to find them a home or get them to an agency, that's sooo sad.
Seriously u guys have to do some research
Not quite LuxBus, but ok... Eh..?
Omg, nobody go Penang for bak kut teh. You guys should have dropped by Klang town from KL for the real taste of BKT.
Kok Wye Chong although, Penang has the best food overall in Malaysia!
Natalie Cheah probably.. but BKT is definitely not one of them.
Nah... You'll have to go to Singapore for the best Bak Kut Teh in the world, where it originates. Everybody knows that.
Bak kut teh originally from Singapore? LOL u means those pepper flavour bak kut teh?
+Suprianto loser troll detected. Woohoo
Noo noo.... Bak = Pork, Kut = Bone and Teh = Tea.
It's another hokkien ethnic food. The bowl of broth is actually made out of Herbs...
No tea in the dish?! - f***ing click bait!!! ;0)
ummmm..I guess the culture dictates what's in the soup, but.....ewww...I have a friend in the US who was born and raised in Malaysia, I have questions! Nice strut in the background, Nakita....followed up by the butt...whew!
Haha, let's just say Nikita finally got over his sickness and came back stronger than ever 😂

OMG, what a waste for the whole bowl of bak kut teh!!!
I hate the way they eat Bah Ku Teh
