In late 2009 I was just discovering drum corps. I watched this video shortly after it was uploaded and decided then and there that I HAD to do this. Next year I'll be aging out as a 3rd year at SCV.
They don't really consider where you're from as long as you can make it to camps. I'm from Florida and a significant fraction of the corps tends to be from Texas - Can't speak for BD though
I’m only 16 but my dad has raised me on Blue Devils and Santa Clara tapes and videos of the shows of every year you can find on UA-cam before the 2000s and I absolutely love it. I’m very happy with the Blue Devils winning all of those titles, but I feel that SCV has been cheated so many times when in comes to championships. They have fantastic shows and phenomenal scores but than they are beat out at the last second. It’s almost as if all of the other corps hold back until the end unlike SCV who give everything they got at EVERY performance
You gotta give Dr. Andre Feagin ( the horn instructor and conductor in this video ) for bringing out the best in these musicians. You can't help but be inspired to play when you're under such intense direction. Good luck to the Vanguard Horns for the 2013 season, and Good luck to the Academy for getting such a great instructor for their 2013 season.
I just was listening to Appalachian spring and searched for this video for a good hour before realizing what video it was. I knew i had seen this video before and i have finally found it
Takes my breath away even on youtube. If you've ever heard SCV live and in person you would know what I mean. Great musicianship, Great leadership in Dr. Feagin, Outstanding hornline. I've been watching this corps since the seventies, they get better and better all time. Keep it up!
Hell yea professor Feagan!!!! That man is the best director I could have asked for in the US Army All American Marching Band!! Great great man who I have the high and utmost amount of respect for!
I’ve been a musician since 11years old. I started on a saxophone later learned trombone and trumpet. Got into college and studied orchestral percussion. I honestly believe drum and bugle corps were so popular because of the simplicity of brass and percussion instruments. As a percussionist you learn the rudiments. A brass player and woodwind player are two very different worlds. Brass, buzz your lips, woodwind make the wood vibrate…
god tyler i freking love you!!!! your such an amzing big brother i cant believe how much you have accomplished......everytime i hear this song it reminds me of you....keep going the way you are and dont change with the trumpet
when i was in marching band, and thought i had to play ALL THE TIME and had absolutely no time to breathe ever, my torso would start to contract (lightly), trying to push out the air, when i was playing loud at about 50% or less air. bending your legs probably makes pushing the air out easier/more comfortable.
well I mean this is a circle full of 30-50 very talented musicians who worked very hard to get into the SCV and not to mention the 8 months of rehearsals they had but yeah I get what you're saying
This looks almost exactly the same as the indoor area in atlanta. Regardless, warming up in a place like this where it echos for a lifetime is not something you forget :)
@Cdog971 Exactly, lowering your center of gravity doesn't make you louder. I think it would actually diminish your performance causing your sound to change pitch will you move.
I heard a rumor that this brass release is still echoing today
Actually made me laugh.
We had practice in the ICC before... and I swear I still hear it echoing in the corners.
LOLOLOL ... i bet so!!!! That resonated throughout my home!
until it was drowned out by the sustain in Babylon
June of 2020. Can confirm.

hey wait, can I ask you some questions?
Yes of course!
How many out of state marchers do you tend to have in the hornline i hear that SCV and BD are really partial to people who live in california
They don't really consider where you're from as long as you can make it to camps. I'm from Florida and a significant fraction of the corps tends to be from Texas - Can't speak for BD though
Oh wow that's cool I'm planning on marching SOA if all goes to plan and then going to either Cavs or SCV for my age out so thats really nice to hear.
10 years later and this still holds up as one of SCV’s best moments in Drum Corps history
One of my favorite closers in all of drum corps.
There's a video of all the non finalists playing this in a city I'll have to link it
Chorale and shaker dance be like

The guy conducting all of that most definitely has the best job ever....
But as of now he probably cant hear much.
He hears the music now. #WORTH
The SCV are overdue for a championship title
Tyler Gentry you are so right

ive looked at this comment for the past 5 years and im happy to reply that they finally got another title lmao
Bruh 😲
Bring it home again Santa Clara!
At :45 they're all like, "Ha, surprise, we were only playing at a comfortable forte. :D"
I should really start wearing a diaper before watching these videos....
Well said friend.
I need to wear a condom...
This is exactly why I insist on real speakers in my elementary music classroom. Music moves you. It deserves to be HEARD!

Yeah man, still holds up to this day (9/8/2022).
This is just one of those moments in human history where you're glad someone had a camera and was filming it
Was glad I was there, too...... But I did yell at the end. Couldn't hold back
I was in that hornline. So happy that someone recorded that moment for all to see.
Ten years later and it still sends chills up my spine.

it's 2017 and i still cry like a baby to this
Hell yea professor Feagan!!!! That man is the best director I could have asked for in the US Army All American Marching Band!! Great great man who I have the high and utmost amount of respect for!
I love the guy who says YEAAAAHHHHH at the end. Every time I hear this, I get chills.
Still amazing in 2016
+adam mccormack dude yes
adam mccormack 2017 too 😌
Now 2018 ✌❤💚
2019☺️❤️❤️
2020 yo
anyone else hear the super F at the end in the trumpets?
Yesss I had to listin to. It so many. Times to. Hear that
Yeah baby!!!
Good god this is still effin’ magnificent
I could recognize Professor T Andre Feagins style of conducting and the sound of his hornline if I was freaking dead.
i love the guy conducting. he was completely taken over by the sounds
Thats T Andre Feagin! Absolute legend. Give him a search!
We did this my freshman year of High School and I have to say that this kicks our band's rendition's a** into the next galaxy.
best simple gifts recording on youtube.
Oh my God! That is heaven beyond imagination!
I still cry every time I watch this
OH MY GOD THAT REVERB! The chords are beyond words.
Still holds up today. 10/30/2023 and this will never cease to give me goosebumps of joy.
my computer glitched up twice near the end of this. it just couldn't handle the perfection of that glorious sound.
Bro the blending on this piece is amazing
Pure perfection.
so beautiful it almost brings me to the point of tears
this is why people love drum corps
We play this as our closer this year for my marching band and omg it is such an emotional closer!

Nothing like hearing a corps at its peak . . . thanks so much for posting.
Best DCI video on the internet
I keep finding myself coming back to this video, this video is my drug.
One of my favorite videos ever
High F. :-)
GO SCV!!!!! WHOO!!!
Heyo
such a great release too!
just listening to this makes me so happy
oh my god i love DCI
The show at my school this year is called The Gift and it is based on this song, too bad our brass section can't produce this sound.
well I mean this is a circle full of 30-50 very talented musicians who worked very hard to get into the SCV and not to mention the 8 months of rehearsals they had but yeah I get what you're saying
usually about 78 brass actually in any DCI world class corps.
72* 24 bari/euphs, 24 trumpets, 12 mellos, and 12 tubas. First person account.
Bobby Frey nowadays they use like 18 tubs instead of 12
my high school marching band did this for our show last year... and this is sooooo amaising
I get chills every time I hear this....
man, this sounded so much sweeter live... and in that arc... :)
Thats T. Andre Feagin, his current employment is associate director of bands and director of athletic bands at University of Texas, El Paso.
The best closer in drum corps history
This looks almost exactly the same as the indoor area in atlanta. Regardless, warming up in a place like this where it echos for a lifetime is not something you forget :)
I want this verson of simple gifts....played at my funeral. Amazing
Very, very sweet SCV.
This gave me lé Chills!!!!!
We played this in band but damn....that's amazing o.o
and I'm back here again in 2024.
SO MANY OVERTONES!!
You mean like another certain California corps does?
Goosebumps.
We’re playing this exact part as a chorale this year and I’m so fucking happy about it
I want them to play this at my funeral...
i wish this was at every refreshment bar.
This is why band is awesome lol
@BosPercussion Yup. He's brass caption at Academy now. Excited to have him!
!!"FREAKIN AWESOME"!!
Simply Magnificent
Amazing that just sums it up
Great DM. He could be stamped right out of cardboard as the definition of a proper conductor!!
This made me cry!! :')
That drum major is awesome.
One of my drill instructors played marching baritone this year. :3
My high school is playing this show this year and we aren't nearly this good.
YEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!
@Cdog971 Exactly, lowering your center of gravity doesn't make you louder. I think it would actually diminish your performance causing your sound to change pitch will you move.
@SwarleyBenson he directed a group I was in, the US Army All-American Marching Band. He's fantastic!
beautiful...
@SwarleyBenson Awesome! I thought it might have been my friend James Williford. He conducts just like that.
@benitospeaksenglish there are no a's in that chord. it's a concert Eb major chord. The only notes in it are Eb, G, and Bb.
gives me chills
to quote an SCV ageout from 2009, "There will never be another night like this."
someone crack that high F but when he got bak on it it sounded beautiful!!!
@cambowden93 He didn't jump an octave. The high F was written. But yes it sounds amazing lol
When I say this, I am not joking, I pissed my pants.
It´s so amazing!
when the trumpets came in at the end I had a brassgasm
I can't wait for Andre Feagin to bring this sound to the Academy!
Don't know what mic this used, but good enough, thanks.
LOVE IT
VERY NICE
I love this soo much. D;
its a concert Eflat or F in trumpet. i determined that on the last page where my comments says its a double F.
IMHO this show was just as good as '89 SCV, but thats just me
Lol I love doing that. It really releases alot of emotion imo. Alot of corps do it
Pure power!
OHHHHH MY GOOODDDDDDD
I think the Drum Major needs new pants towards the end
High Bb ftw!
Ahh, hahh. That would make sense since I was up in the stands at Quarters. Typo, sorry. Goin' to be there again for 2010!! More vids to come..
