hi from USA. Thanks for this video. i did my very first latch hook kit and wasn't sure what to do with it once I finished. Now I make it into a cushion. Thank you
I hadn't even thought of doing an envelope back for a project I need to finish until I came across this tutorial. I love this idea! Excellent tutorial.
Thanks so much for this lovely video - gave me all the info I need to finish off a square panel as a pillow (its been siting in my to-do basket for about 5 years!)....will be able to get that done now!!
Hi there. You are very welcome. This technique can be used for so many different needle crafts. I love needlepoint and have done quite a lot myself in the past. Some of which are still waiting for a cushion back as my latch hook business has taken over! Clare x
You are a phenomenal lady, Thank you so much for teaching me how to make the cushion. I plan to make one for my daughter's birthday in a few weeks, now that I can. Many many thanks
This is such a great tutorial! Thank you for posting! I just recently finished a latch hook project, and I wasn't sure what to do with it. At first I thought about purchasing a shadow box from my local craft store and framing it, but this seems like such a better idea and so much more useful! Thanks again!
UtterlyHookedDesigns Hello, this is fab! I just started latch hooking and you have made this so easy and fun! All your designs and cushions look amazing by the way. Thanks!!!
Very helpful! I was able to finish my grandma's yarn half stitch project this summer and now I have turned it into a pillow case. :) And this was my first sewing project!!
Thank you so much for this thorough and informative video! Very clear instructions and I now feel confident turning my grandad's latch hook pieces into cushions for him 🧵🪡🛋
Im looking into buying a sewing machine. it will be my first one, but id like to use it specifically for making pillows. What kind would you reccomend? im shopping on Amazon. Thanks!
Hi Katie. This is quite a difficult question! I have a Husqvarna but I have had it about 20 years! Every stitcher I know likes a different machine. I would get a fairly simple one, not too expensive, around the £200 mark, just to get you started and then if you are keen you can move up. To cope with stitching rug canvas it does need to be fairly robust. Hope this helps. Clare x
this is such an AMAZING tutorial I will most defiantly use this when I am finished with my latch hook I do have one question are there other good alternative fabrics you can use other than furnishing fabric?
Hello Claire, just wanted to say thank you for a very informative tutorial. Just finished a pillow following your instructions and it turned out perfect ! 🙂
Hi Claire, how do you add the extra bit of fabric around the edge of the rug to make a larger pillow? I have an 8"x8" rug I would like to make into a 12"x12" pillow using a border around the rug.
Hi I wanted to know if you have any advice for me. I really want a simple cushion with no envelope backing. I also want to hand stitch the cushion. Will this be possible with the latch hook?
Hi there. All you need to do is cut out a piece of fabric that is 2cm approx bigger around each edge than your latch hook panel. Then put the right sides together and hand stitch using a back stitch around 3 sides only. Make sure you use a strong thread. Keeping as close to the last row of latch hooking as you can. Then turn it the right way round, insert your cushion pad and then careful stitch up the third edge with tiny stitches folding in the edges as you go. Hope this helps. Clare x
Amazing video! I've been wanting to try this for a while, but wasn't sure where to begin. Early in my search for tutorials, I found your video, and you have made it look so easy and have laid out the steps so clearly, that I feel much more confident about starting my project. Thank you! 😊
Hi Luke. You can do whatever you like with your latch hook panels. it is up to you. You can do this technique by hand sewing too, same principle. Clare
This was just what I needed! My daughter did the latch hook and I made it into a pillow for her. It turned out great and she is thrilled. Thank you for taking the time to create and post this.
Hi Carlina. You are very welcome. It is wonderful to hear I have been able to help you out. Latch hooking is such fun but I believe our good work should be put to use and now you can enjoy your pillow. Clare x
god bless you. I can officially finish some of the 1.5bazillion latch hook rugs from kits/leftover yarn tails from my crochet projects. Also great to know because I started locker hooking with scrap yarn and it's so fantastic. I'll never run out of rugs and cushions. I'm also super cheap and make quick "pillow forms" with bed sheets and I buy the cheap pillows and stuff the heck out of them. It's amazing how much cheaper it is to buy a pillow instead of stuffing. I'm looking forward to a video though on how to finish a rug. I'm dying to find out :)
Thank you for this fantastic video. I found latch hook during lockdown and instantly fell in love with the craft. I’ve done a couple already but have been stuck on what to do once they are made. My finished projects have been sat somewhat sadly on my spare craft desk waiting for inspiration. I’m definitely going to give this a try, you’ve explained it so wonderfully and I found the finished cushion beautiful. Thank you 😃
Thank you sooooo much! I've had an embroidery on similar canvas made by my sister for 20 years without me knowing what to do with it. It's now a beautiful pillow! And will be gifted to my daughter. I am so happy!
Great video , thank you very much. I managed to complete a cushion cover with a tapestry picture that my daughter had sewn. It's turned out perfectly :)
Hi Clare, thanks for the instructions! I've never been able to find good instructions for finishing latch hook projects. :-) When you are stitching together the fabric and canvas along the bottom edge of the pillow, do you still tuck in the hanging stitches? If you tuck these in, would you actually be pushing the latch hook stitches up, in the opposite direction from how they hang normally?? I wouldn't think you would want to catch those hanging yarn pieces as you're sewing the bottom edge. Appreciate the help!!
Hi Megan. Thank you for your message. Yes, you must push the knots up out of the way or it will spoil the look of your finished project. When you turn your cushion the right way the knots still all lie in the right direction and you shouldn't be able to see any canvas. Hope this helps. Clare x
Hello Clare! Thank you so much for this wonderful, informative video. My friend and I made a pillow for a lady in our chorus' vow renewal. It's a small music note design and as beginner sewers, this was the perfect video to help us create this beautiful gift!
Hi there. If possible use a sewing machine to put a line of stitching along the canvas to stop the canvas from fraying anymore. Or you could hand sew. You could unpick and add a strip of canvas that over laps and then re hook the strands.Without seeing the damage it is hard to say exactly. Regards Clare
Hi Mimzy. Thanks for your message. I am only speaking about my own latch hook kits, I wouldn't like to say about other companies, especially if it is wool rather than acrylic. If the knots have been done tight enough, this is possible. I would gently handwash though and dry flat on a towel. If you watch my other tutorial on How to apply Super Grip non slip spray to your latch hook projects you will see that this product keeps the knots fixed in place on the back of your work and if done properly they shouldn't come out. I wash my rugs and cushions in my washing machine on a delicate wash but then I trust my machine. I wouldn't recommend you doing this often though as it will affect the canvas itself. Hope this helps. Regards Clare
Thankyou for your video, I have loads of latch-hooks that are completed, but never knew how to turn them in to the pillow or the rug. great video easy to follow thanks :)
Help. Trying to put together a snowman huggables and have no idea how to attach the felt nose. It says pin and stitch but how get yarn through the felt?
Hi Sandra. Have you tried contacting MCG who made this kit. If I knew the details and could see the instructions I might be able to give you advice as I have made many soft toys over the years but otherwise the design company should help you. Good luck. Regards Clare
Mona Slattery I would recommend mine! Great designs and high quality materials. Avoid the really cheap ones as people seem to be disappointed with the finished results. It does however depend on what you are going to use the end latch hook for. What every you choose, enjoy and happy hooking! Clare x
Thank you for the video. I am creating my own latch hook pillow and am concerned about the stiffness of the grid. Should I wash this after finishing to wash the glues out and make it softer? I am worried about ruining the yarn design. Have you had luck washing your latch hook pillow. And how do you do so. Thank you again
Hi Shauna. Thanks for your message. You do not need to wash your project after you have finished. The yarn should cover all the canvas so that it is soft. I am not sure if you can wash your project anyway as I don't know whose canvas and yarn you have used. Both my yarn and canvas can be washed on a gentle cycle and they come up lovely. I even wash my rugs occasionally. I would recommend you hand wash gently and dry flat on a towel. Clare x
Thank you for your reply. I used redheart yarn and "graph and latch" canvas. Both say they can be hand washed. What brand yarn and canvas do you recommend? I have finished my pillow and it looks amazing. Thanks to your video tutorial.
Thank you for encouraging me to do that the only reason why I said that cuz I am in the wheelchair and I I can't use my hands that good if you can give me some suggestions easier way to do that I will be happy but I will try when I get one thank you
+Karen Wright Hi Karen. I hope you got my other reply through Facebook. I have never tried to latch hook with a crochet hook, so can not advise. I would imagine it is more difficult but they used a similar hook when latch hooking first started before the latch hook tool was designed. However the latch hook tool was made specially to tackle this job perfectly and easily and they are readily available. Clare x
Hi Maria. The first thing you need to do is use the zigzag foot on your sewing machine and stitch all around your panel over the canvas threads that you can still see. Hopefully this will stop your canvas from fraying and keep the integrity. Then I would suggest stitching 1" bias tape in individual strips down each side to the last little bit of canvas showing. You can also use non fray fabric. This will be tricky but perfectly possible. Then you should be able to carry on following the instructions on my video. Hope this helps. Clare x

Colette Ellison Hi Colette. There are different techniques for backing a latch hook rug. You can google this to see if it helps. I like to stitch the rug binding on the back to cover the turned raw edges of the canvas but there are several techniques. If you check out my Facebook page and scroll down my posts you will see several photographs of how to do this. I haven't yet made a video of this but may do in the future. All the best. Clare x
I am a novice at sewing. I have a latch hook project that my daughter finished 10 years ago. Now I know how to make a pillow with it. Thanks!

Hi again Colette. You were right first time. This is a video to turn latch hook panels into cushions/pillows. Clare xx
Hi sorry just read what i put, what it was meant to say was is it the same technique for the rug?
Colette Ellison Hi Colette. There are different techniques for backing a latch hook rug. You can google this to see if it helps. I like to stitch the rug binding on the back to cover the turned raw edges of the canvas but there are several techniques. If you check out my Facebook page and scroll down my posts you will see several photographs of how to do this. I haven't yet made a video of this but may do in the future. All the best. Clare x
