This was super helpful, thank you! We bought a house with a couple of neglected New Zealand flax and I had no idea how to tackle them. I had seen some with the ends clipped at an angle and thought this was how to deal with them so I’m glad you have said not to and why! 🙂

Great video. I have 4 of these in my front yard. It took me a few days to clean them up. I never knew how to properly maintain them; now I do :) Thank you!

It’s a lot of work to properly maintenance the phormiums, great to see you being thorough with them, not just a pretty landscaper 😜👍🏻.

I could have done with some of those mature rooted pullouts, save having to buy plants Great job!

Mine are like 9ft now mine are black burgundy type they flower every year and the ones I pull out I pot up and give to friends my front is full now. At the time the soil was solid clay and ten years on I can just put my hand in and the soil just breaks up nice good soil

Hi, I have a few Flax plants in my front yard. I just moved into a new home and I noticed the tips of the plants are turning brown and drying up. Any recommendations on regular watering or maintaining them so the tips won’t dry up? I live in California and summers tend to get hot 🥵

Thanks for this video. It was really helpful! I have a big one to tackle next week. Is there a best time of the year to do this or is any time ok? Presumably after it's been raining, it's easier to pull out of the ground.

Hi Stephania, thanks for the message. I really hope it helped. I think any time is ok, more than happy to talk about it. Stay safe

@@GreentopLandscapes The one I have to deal with had very long leaves that are drooping into the path and the customer has complained about that. I thought about thinning it out as you have done to completely remove the long droopy leaves and make room for new shorter leaves. Now I'm thinking I might also discover offsets like you have when I get down the base. Last time I worked with it I managed to poke myself in the eye with the leaves so I thought goggles might be handy too!

Poe is essential don’t make the mistake I have before. It seems as if you know what your doing always available if needed

Any ideas what to do with the leaves once cut off as they don’t shred very well!

Hi! I have one of these and it’s growing a bit out of control. Is there a specific time of year to do this?

  • @eckeall2121

Use a sharp knife instead of secateurs, and cut on a downwards angle away from the center of the leaf fan. Way faster and easier

Philosophy: I always find it slightly ironic to hear of the need to “tidy” plants to ensure their survival. Flax has survived without our intervention for millions of years, and has learned to live with its own dead leaves - which eventually decay into necessary fertiliser for its own roots. It is the human concept of tidiness, this desire to clean up dead material, that drives ideas like that expressed in this video. But, yes, I also understand and enjoy a tidy garden. And so we act out the tidiness-for-the-good-of-the-plant scenario more to improve our mental well-being, while probably undermining the well-being of the plant… There’s the irony.
Here in NZ, flax plants grow untended, in swamps, in huge numbers on motorway embankments, can be found growing in lowlands to highlands of remote inaccessible areas where never a gardener goes near them - and guess what? They make it. Year after year.
