    Thank you everyone for watching!
I've gotten back into making videos after I found out that people were actually watching this, and currently have 3 others already uploaded within the last couple months, so you should watch those too ;)
Also, if you're into this then you'll surely like other ridiculously long videos analysing JRPG's, so you should go watch Cinnacal's video on Xenoblade Chronicles. Here's the link! ua-cam.com/video/jL3BaBNvO0Y/v-deo.html

For anyone wondering why I'm suddenly replying to you!
I uploaded this back in march and for a few months it only had a couple views with no comments or likes, so I just assumed no one would watch it and stopped checking it... Until today someone posted the video or /r/earthbound and I happened across the post. And so I've just now discovered that people actually watched this and liked it!
After I uploaded this I started working on a video about Metal Gear Solid 3 but stopped as I was having issues recording my audio. However, I think I'll start working on it again seeing as people actually watched this.
Thank you all for the love, seriously has made my week ❤️❤️

I see Porky as such a tragic and pathetic character. he's just so devoid of love that he wants to make everything disappear. I think that's what Gigas's influence did to him. I think we forget that nobody liked him in the second game. he made himself a world where everyone loves him. and yet, he still kept his "best friend's" yo-yo, showing that he still has this desire to have someone to connect to on a less superficial level. this series has always been about love, and Porky is what happens when you take that away from someone.

Giygas at least had Mary even if George ultimately betrayed him (and I've always theorized he raged out and is responsible for killing Mary ending up with her in her own Magicant). @@Nafan__ Hi, I'm an audio engineer and I can give you a couple pointers. The harshest thing that sticks out to me in this video would be the compressor or limiter settings regarding plosive clipping. When there's a strong plosive, the vocal volume is being ducked for entire words, about a second, causing a distracting rollercoaster of volume (less noticeable on headphones). The tone of your voice here was actually great, very relaxing and warm beyond the production issues. You simply needed some mild declicking, mild denoising, a pop filter, and a compressor set to focus on transients (plosives) with quick attack settings and a fast enough release to duck only the length of the plosives without ducking the volume of vowels or words. Your latest video fixed plosives/compressor settings (plus better denoising I think), but it lost most of the warmth and low end frequencies, causing it to sound a bit tinny and unbalanced to me.
Clicks are more the little speech techniques (don't have your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth if you know you're about to open your mouth to speak, clear excess saliva from your mouth just as often as you hydrate to keep in that Goldilocks zone, etc.), but I wouldn't consider the amount in this video bad at all even without declicking. From personal experience, you're your own worst voice critic. It's super easy to overproduce things and lose quality chasing relatively small problems.
I'd recommend using the same mic proximity and same or similar EQ as this video, just with a pop filter, a compressor with dialed in attack and release, a declicker with mild settings, and a denoiser.
You can also use a dynamic EQ to keep even more vocal detail while reducing problem frequencies only when their volume is too high, but you need to dial in the basics and get used to your own recorded voice (or hire/ask someone else for help who doesn't have that inherent bias) before you try more advanced stuff.

Oh man, I watched the whole thing, and it was amazing! I loved your analysis and interpretations of the game, and I pretty much have the same interpretations! Though one thing I interpreted differently was the boat scene with the displays of Earthbound related things.
You pointed out that the track that plays right before the boat scene is a Mother 1 song. And during the boat scene, the track that plays is the Mother 3 rendition of “Pollyanna”, a song that is also a Mother 1 song but has also appeared in Earthbound. This rendition of Pollyanna, however, is called “A Certain Someone’s Memories” in Mother 3. I believe that the “certain someone” isn’t necessarily Porky, but YOU, the player! You’re the one who has experienced Earthbound and saw the items that are displayed here. You’re the one who has played Earthbound Beginnings and heard these songs. These are, in a sense, YOUR memories! Notice how the song title doesn’t specify the “certain someone” as Porky.
This is also supported by the fact that some of the items on display are items that, although come from Earthbound, appeared in places in which Porky wasn’t even there, so Porky had no idea of knowing about them. But you do! Not to mention the Mother 1 songs.
In a sense, the boat ride could be interpreted as Porky holding on to the past, but it could very well be a celebration of the Mother trilogy, seeing as this is the last game in the series. By doing so it also celebrates the player, which, as we know, is a very important figure in Mother 3. This might just be another way of acknowledging the player as someone important.
Sorry for the long comment! I just wanted to give my interpretation, the boat ride is one of my favorite parts of Mother 3, and I think this interpretation gives the game a bit more optimistic and positive light! Nevertheless I very much enjoyed the video!

regarding the masked man reveal, for me i enjoyed it because of the lack of any dramatic emotional moment.
in the moments where lucas sees the masked man and just stares at him, as the screen lingers and the color flickers on and off, i think lucas, at least subconsciously, knew who the masked man was. i think throughout his journey, he’s been resolving himself to the fact that he will likely have to fight his twin brother. so, when his father, who in the past three years has been chasing his missing son and in turn neglecting the son who was actually with him, finally realizes where the son he was searching for was all along, i think the emptiness of the moment is fitting. lucas already came to terms with the truth, and only now is flint catching on.
it’s especially hammered in when flint says, “lucas, be happy. i’ve finally, finally found the brother you lost.” because, the one who really found him wasn’t flint, was it? it was lucas. and, equipped with the now confirmation that lucas must fight his brother, there’s absolutely nothing to be happy about in this situation.
to me, the reveal isn’t supposed to be shocking or dramatic. it’s supposed to finally state something that lucas has already been aware of for a long, long time. and when it’s finally been dug up, there’s just this sense of resignation and solemness. i really like it.
it’s really interesting to hear your thoughts on this moment though, and really, for the entire game! it blows my mind at the amount of detail in which you dug into the games themes and story moments, and the pace the video flowed was really good; i wasn’t lost at any moment of the video and it’s a so nice to listen to. your perspective on some of the moments in the game where really interesting and i think you articulated them really well, too!
i think my only critique is that some moments, your narration is offbeat from the clips shown in the video (sometimes you say things that haven’t happened yet or things on screen have progressed passed your narration) but i understand how tiring editing these huge videos are.
i really love this game, and im so glad you made this video. the love you have for this game is so palpable in this entire three hour video and it’s so wonderful to see. for a first video, the quality of this is astounding. incredible job! i loved it a lot, and i hope you create even more videos in the future. thank you so much!

That's a fantastic point about the masked man reveal, and makes total sense!
As for the editing note, you're right it was basically a time thing. I recorded while I took notes so there would often be small pauses in gameplay while I wrote, and so in editing I'd shift the clip so you don't have to see me standing still for 5-10 seconds before the thing I wanna show comes up. It's not a very elegant system, but with only 1 monitor and playing a game as long as Mother 3 I haven't figured out anything that works better yet. But thank you for your thoughts, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

The hotspring scene with Ionia and Lucas has always been misinterpreted, so many people have drawn parallels to very inappropriate things which is not the purpose of the scene at all.
Characters learning PSI in Mother 3 are meant to represent near-death experiences, what Ionia is doing is almost drowning Lucas, not "other" things.
The Magypsies are peaceful and very intelligent characters, what Ionia is doing is trying to help Lucas, not hurt him.
Kumatora learning Starstorm later in the game is done by striking her with lightning, another example of this.
I'm not blaming Nafan at all for this as this suggestion has been going around for years and a lot of people have fallen victim to it (even myself at one point) but I felt a need to clear it up because the Magypsies already have controversy around them for no reason at all.

Watching this has reminded me how much I loved Mother 3 and even gave me some newfound appreciation for it. I actually missed a lot of the things you mentioned, primarily the detail of the residents of Tazmily slowly leaving for New Pork. I was pretty focused on just progressing the story when I played it. But I think I'll stop and sniff the roses more next time I play it. I guess the best thing I can say is that your video really brought those memories back to the forefront and made me want to start a new playthrough. Phenomenal work, man. I hope you'll continue making videos.

I like how much you talked about the doorknob very extensively even tho its just a running joke that occurs multiple times in the games. Also wtf was that part about chapter 6 lol by your voice I assumed you were gonna talk about how sad Lucas trying to comit suicide to reach Hinawa on the afterlife but then you sudden started a wierd talk about the power of love haha, loved it, very unexpected and diferent

I'd seen very little of mother 3 before this video and my jaw legitimately dropped when flint smashed the campfire and stayed that way the whole scene, and I had to go back and watch it again like a minute later. it's just so much more visually expressive than I would have expected from a mother game. I'm so glad they put in the extra time and work to animate it the way they did

  • @0ctopusComp1etely

    Excellent video.
Lots of points to comment on, but I'll try (and fail) to keep them brief:
    1) I was really hoping the video would comment on the "Hotspring" during the mushroom sequence, even if it's not plot relevant. I loved the sheer trepidation I felt when you find a hotspring in the middle of this freaky sequence where nothing seems to be what it really is, you go in it for the free healing, and your dog REFUSES to go in. It made me terrified of what I had actually just bathed in, which I think is just a great utilization of both game mechanics and subversion of the game's own pacing.
    2) Very minor point, but I was livid after the Guardian Statue's boss fight and the Masked Man steals that Needle. I found that to be the hardest boss in the entire game for me, and having the reward taken so easily made me want to kick the Masked Man's teeth in, mind-controlled brother or not. The next fight to beat him was super cathartic to me, even if sad in a contextual way.
    3) I like the implication that the "100th Floor" that has construction going on isn't finished because you moved too quickly for King P to finish his setup to troll you. I also feel like it ties in with a lot of the following stairways with lampposts being so empty. It's possible that King P was just overlooking them, as their just transitionary areas, but I felt like he wouldn't be able to hold himself back from making them as annoyingly gaudy as possible and just hasn't gotten to them yet.
I also feel like it really shows that King P just doesn't have any intentions to stop, ever. Here his tower is, with multiple annoying 100th Floors all meant to either kill you or just waste your time, and he's still adding more. He'd probably add more as long as you're still alive and still on your way to him. He's just that kind of selfish brat.
    4) As someone that's never actually played Earthbound but knows the story beats and King P's significance to it, I kind of felt like the memorabilia boat ride at the top of the tower was sort of... cynical, in a way?
It's obviously filled with love and respect for the prior game in the franchise. It's meant to bring up fond memories from fans of the series, and ties in wonderfully with the distortion that the big bad's obsession with that past. But I also feel like in this one scene, the game might also be visualizing letting go of the past, at least to some degree. It's fine to remember the good times, and even embody them in monuments. But focusing on them at the disregard of the present only brings harm.
And I don't mean that purely from King P's perspective. The main protagonists from THIS game are being forced to sit through a boat ride that has nothing to do with them. They've been on their own adventures, fought their own battles, and in order to progress the plot they have to wade through someone else's memories that they honestly likely don't care about in the slightest. They have their own baggage that they've carried through the story, and being told to focus on King P's isn't going to help them beat him any faster. It's they're moment to uniquely shine, but they're instead being told to stop for a memory that's only tangentially related.
At least I felt that way. The fanservice for Earthbound in Mother 3 is very tasteful, with tons of nifty references and fun callbacks. You can see how the memories get more twisted the closer they are to King P's interpretation, but that in itself is great storytelling. But then I got to that hallway at the end of the game, after a million "100th Floors" and just wanting to beat the big bad's face in, there's a last detour where he shoves his past in one more time, and I was just done with him. It serves the plot and feeling of the game beautifully, because it ties so closely to its core instigator, but I just didn't want it to see it at that point. And I kind of get the feeling that's a potential reaction the game was going for.
I'm probably wrong. It's a hard feeling to put into words. Somewhere between genuine respect and admonishment for self-indulgence.
It's an innocuous enough moment to not intrude and can be interpreted in different ways. I don't expect many people to agree with me, especially fans of Earthbound. But that was my view. Let the new characters come out from the shadow of the older game, and get their own current story climax instead of riding on the back of the old one.
Although that's a tall order to do considering who King P is, but still...
    5) I should have thought of Lucas equipping the Real Bat at the end of the game as King P pushing him to re-enact Ness's role in the prior one. That's honestly such a simple and beautiful interpretation I'm ashamed that I missed it.
This may sound somewhat hypocritical to my prior point, though, I thought that the Real Bat actually did represent Lucas stepping up to Ness, but more of in an emotional way than symbolic. Ness goes through his whole game with Bats, and feels very comfortable as a standard RPG protagonist with offensive abilities. He's willing to put up his dukes and use a Real Bat to fight from the get-go.
Lucas spends his game using Sticks and playing defensively. He's a pacifist by nature. He doesn't want to fight, or at least isn't as willing. But right there, at the end of the game, Lucas finds the resolve to put aside his own hesitations and get a Real Bat. He's willing to go all-out if it means saving the world and beating King P. In the end, he finally reaches an aggression point that Ness (and most RPG protagonists) START at- He's willing to fight, for real now. No more Sticks.
...Which is all the more poignant when the last two boss fights of the game are ones where Lucas attacking are either sub-optimal or flat-out impossible. The game even subverts its own characters' growths.
I love Mother 3 so much.

Really great and well put together review of one of my favorite games of all time but one minor thing you wrong was the "coincidence" of Lucas landing in the haystack. It's actually stated that Hinawa came to Alec in a dream and told him to put a bunch of hay in a specific spot (That's why Alec and Wess we're there when Lucas landed) showing that Hinawa had everything planned to help Lucas continue his journey.

40:24 - If you analyze Mother 3, especially once we get to the ending, this is a hint that bad things are to come. I believe one of the themes that Mother 3 covertly has is the idea that every living creature that can think, has a breaking point. Flint's was the loss of his wife. Lucas as we find out is strong enough to not break at just that one tragedy (though his faith takes a massive blow). But even Lucas perhaps has his limits, as we'll see...

    • @kirklandday
      @kirklandday 2 роки тому

I think the ending was supposed to ambiguous. Whoever pulls the needle has a choice, and that choice at the end is partially, if not entirely, left to the player.
Awfully scary considering the time in history we're in. A more dangerous time than even the Cuban Missile Crisis, brought to the world by the same evil which brought evil to Tazmily. A power enforced by war pigs to dominate and rule over everyone.

Not sure if you're gonna see this, but there's an interesting thing I've noticed about Fassad's name, I don't know how intentional it is but it's actually genius.
The first interpretation is "facade" which is the more obvious one, since his entire personality is a facade, he pretends to be a nice person at first when we see him but actually has devious intentions and is an animal abuser. Plus the whole facade of his identity too (spoiler, being a magypsy).
But there's a double meaning to his name as well. "Fassad" is actually a word in Arabic, and this is the part I'm not sure if it was intentional, although Fassad does have traits that might try to emphasize some "arabic" aspect of him, like his clothing and the music that accompanies him especially when we first see him, and the fact that the central chapter focusing on him starts off in a desert. The word itself fits so perfectly though, essentially in arabic "Fassad" actually means "corruptor", which is literally what he was. He was the one who corrupted tazmily by introducing technology, money and inciting vices between the people.
So no matter which way you interpret his name, it actually describes him perfectly and even foreshadows stuff about him, I just thought it was an interesting point.

My personal favorite detail in the hinawa scene is that after flint really starts to get violent tessy rushes over to cover lucas and clauses eyes. It really strenghtens the scenes of unity in tasmilli
Also fun fact: lucas will usaly refuse to attack claus but when flint jumps infront of the attack he has 1 change to out of rage deal damage. Theres still no way to kill him but its a good sybool of it all being to much to stay on the defense
