Dude, seriously, your videos are totally on point! Thank you for the time and effort on everything that it takes to; move cameras, the gardening, the work to grow stuff, and the editing of this video! Good stuffs man!
Thanks so much Shawn!! I try to get them out as early as possible so that they are relevant to what's currently going on...but its hard sometimes too as some areas get their fall and winter so much earlier than me!
I want to congratulate you on this video. I have been following you for some time, and you have taken it to a next level with this one. The production was smooth and the script was very well thought out. In my humble opinion, this video is as close to being a definitive guide as you could hope for! The only thing I found wanting was to see the lifecycle of the plant going through its stages in situ after planting, but that is perhaps unreasonable considering the timing, and by no means takes away from the video. :) Thank you for your work. I think this is only the second comment I left in the 10 years I've been on the platform. Cheers
Bonemeal is great for growing strawbs. When I used it mine went from about 6/10 flavour and not much use for anything except jam, to more like 8/10 flavour and good enough to eat on their own without even needing sugar.
@doublehapiness9889, bonemeal? As in animal bones! That is absolutely disgusting, there is no way I would do such thing of putting animal bones on my strawberries or anything else nope, there are other ways that are organic goodness and who knows how those poor animals died and if it was in a humane way.... And this here is why we have poachers killing elephants because "people" want & buy junk. I'm sorry but no thanks!
I started some strawberries from seed a few years ago. If those weren't the cutest tiny little plants! We had a few light frosts recently but I still have strawberry blossoms! My biggest problem is fighting some kind of bees when I try to pick the everbearing fruit. Sometimes the bees win.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I don't know if it's the bees that are eating the strawberries, there are bites/holes in most berries. I’ve grown strawberries for the past 6 years. Last year I had my best yield ever 5 gallons. The plants were very healthy in the fall. I decided to do a fall clean up and cut back a significant amount of the dying foliage. This spring came and 80-90 percent of the plants didn’t come back. No harvest this year, I was gutted. I attribute this to my actions last fall, but I did notice this spring many of the plants were pushed out of the ground by frost. This may have also attributed to the death of my plants. What are your thoughts on fall maintenance and methods to prevent freeze thaw problems?
nice video. thank you. two questions for you. when/how do you plant bare root strawberries? also: where do you get your fine straw mulch. it looks so nice. Thank you so much.
I got Marshall and Holiday strawberry plants to put into the ground or containers this spring. I hope they survive here in Vancouver, WA. I do not know where to get a mulch though.
Thank you for sharing this video. I love strawberries and was given a few bare rooted ones. I'm growing them in pots and was really concerned at first as there were no flowers. However, I now have a really bushy leafy crop and finally some unripe small strawberries. May I ask, should I be removing some of the leaves? I feel as though the strawberries are getting buried and hidden underneath all these leaves and not getting the sun they should be getting :( Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Hey Bianca, usually the foliage is left intact. The runners though....those long stem-projections....remove those for sure. The berries themselves will poke through the leaves. However, if you're getting too many leaves, likely its a fertilizer imbalance. (ie too much Nitrogen)...
Thanks for the info. I have strawberries growing in a pot. It's on its second year. I think I should split and create more plants. Is that a good idea? It's still bearing fruit. (1st timer)

They would get sun from early morning all the way up to almost 5 o’clock.

Love all your videos, just purchased some strawberry plants here in Washago On. It's the end of June but as you stated in your video I can still plant them now. I do have a few questions. Based on the 5 year life cycle do I have to buy new plants to repeat my harvest or do I use the babies from the mother plant? Can I use shredded fall leaves instead of straw? Should I remove the flowers with this being the end of June and over 3 months away from my first frost? I am doing the container method since all my gardens are full. With that in mind, am I ok to plant one plant in a 5 gallon pot to give it lots of room? Thank you in advance for your response.
I'm so sorry about all the questions I posted 😆 I didn't realize you had so many videos on strawberries. So I think I have most of my answers answers. Again, i just love ❤️ all your informative info.
I bought bare roots, for the first time, this year. About 90% are green and growing, but the rest are now brown and dry. Any chance those will show back up next Spring? Or should I remove them now? Thank you for the video, as always! ~Kelly
Hey K, usually they should start growing right away in the first two weeks. If nothing came up and the weather was decent, chances are they are done and won't ever come up.
By the way, a previous year I put some store bought strawberries into my planters directly into compost, no added garden soil, and the berries tasted like salt. Any idea why the compost made everything even peas taste salty?
Well, strawberries are rarely grown from seed. They are usually grown from crown divisions or runner-starts. As the plant sets its fruit in the fall for the FOLLOWING year, a strawberry seed planted in the spring in March will likely only give berries the next summer.....14-16 months later. A well-started crown division could produce berries the same year it was planted.
I have planted multiple bare roots in a bed using super soil from local garden center...nothing happened...watered well...drains good...THEN got some well established plants from a good friend and transplanted....they are looking like they are on their way to dying....what am I doing wrong?
