Love the dog running in circles in the background, and the cat! Such a great informative video, thank you! Starting my strawberry garden now, thanks so much!
Nice! My grandparents always had a ton of strawberries in their garden. They are so versatile in how you can grow them. In the ground, hydroponics, aeroponics, aquaponics... just about every way you can grow a plant! Thanks for sharing 🤠
Yeah Eric, time to get at the strawberries,. I have mine planted in cattle mineral tubs. I will be building a large enclosed garden area mainly raised beds. Then will transplant them to a more permanent location where I can better grow them. Also here in North East Texas........ Jeff
My grandfather ran a truck farm. He would drive a tractor with cultivation equipment down the field moving the strawberries to the left or right each year about 10”. Each year, three times left three times right. Giving about 24” paths to walk down. They’re definitely hardy. All he would say is he’s making a new pathway for people to pick them up.
Thank you for the tutorial on planting strawberries, it was very informative, and what I find so cute in your videos is your dog in the background running around he or she looks as though they are have a fun time. Thanks again sir.
No questions, but I'll totally agree that strawberries are slam dunk easy to grow. We've had them for years here in the Seattle area. Strawberry shortcake when in season. We freeze the surplus. GF like to blend them into her smoothie year round.
Yes!!! I am a new gardener and I am amazed!!! Strawberries, Peppers, Zucchini and Tomatoes are kinda EASY!!! I can't imagine buying in the grocery ever again. The taste/flavors sooooo much better. ❤😀😀😀
I live in Nacogdoches, thanks for the info! This is our first yea of growing them. We bought them from a feed store, but need more. What is the best variety for our area, and what is the best way to source them?
Pant junebearing berries they produce heavy for about a month instead of a few berries every day off of everbearing, who doesn't get tired of picking a few berries every day! a very good junebearing berry is Honeoye you can freeze them and take them out as needed and there just as fresh as when picked. hope this help you.
Oh my goodness! I was so impressed with the dog in the background running SO fast until I recalled I watch videos 1.5 - 2 x speed or I zone out thanks to my ADHD. This video is very helpful to me as I am new to growing anything. My strawberry plants from last spring survived but hardly gave any fruit but I think it is because they are not two years old yet.
Thank for your explaining. I guess my fault in the past time was that I planted my strawberries too deep. I'll give ist another try in some weeks 🍓 Greetings from northern Germany! 🤩
Have you ever heard of electro culture? It works amazingly when you apply the idea to strawberry plants. You won’t need to use as much fertilizer either, the plants will produce sooner and keep producing all season long. The only negative is the electro culture makes the weeds grow faster too. I know people normally scoff at the concept, I challenge anyone that thinks it does not make any sense and it doesn’t work to try it on anything you are growing for 2 weeks, you won’t stop when the 2 weeks are up, I don’t know how it works but it works. Edit; when I put the rig up at my strawberry plants, I noticed the difference in the growth rate over the first night.
Eric your video is so timely ! i need to get out and do this to mine. Some have jumped their container and have established on the adjacent ground ~ I love this ! Kinda rogue ! Be blessed🙏
Thank you for posting this video with such detail! I had been searching for this instruction and content and couldn’t find it anywhere! Thank you so much! I now know what to do with my strawberries!
Great video! Especially liked the border collie running laps in the background. Not sure what he was up to, but he sure was working hard! Keep up the great videos.
My first year planting strawberries is TX Hill Country. Going to be interesting to see how they do. We always made a little raised pyramid mound and draped the roots over and covered.

Just found your channel...will go back & check out other videos! You're very likeable & well spoken, with easy to understand advice. Much love from the beautiful Arkansas River Valley 💞!
Man, you make it look so easy! I’m just a little north of you, in the DFW area, and I am planning my garden for the first half of the year. I have not had any luck with strawberries in the past, but I also have only tried them in pots and certainly not with the fertilizer you recommend. So I’m thinking I will give it another go! Any recommendations on where to purchase starters? (You mentioned buying plants online.) Thank you for this very helpful and very informative video. Really appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing these helpful tips. I live in zone 9b SW Florida. I may be a little late for the party this year because we're already in our strawberry picking season. Today is January 11, 2024, but I did start some from seeds back in October, and I've got a small plant growing. I'm going to check a local nursery to see if they have any starter plants. If not, I'll plant more seeds and just nurture my plants through the spring and summer for next years harvest. happy gardening in 2024
Nice! Thank you! I bought 10 organic strawberries and am ready to get them planted. i have grown strawberries in the past. My husband had plowed them all up before I realized it that year! I am going to try again.
I grow mine in 100% compost, use tomato feed once a week when in flower, and apply barley straw as soon as they flower. The straw stops the fruits from sitting on the soil and going mouldy or being eaten by slugs and bugs
The dog keep running around. :D total clip 7 minutes.. but i keep replay this many times. I missed the first 2 minutes like 6 times. what did you about fertilizer again?
EAST TEXAS?!?! Awesome! I live in E TX too. (Crockett) I’m glad YT suggested your channel when I searched. How cool. Great video. Thanks for the info 🙌🏼
My brother and I are looking at using some of our property for farming, strawberries are a good option for us. Even though you are in Texas and we are in Maine you have some real good points for us to consider, thanks for an informative video.
I just learned so much from your video that I haven’t heard from other videos!!!!!!!! I heard about the “runner” but no one explained in detail and “showed” how the runner produces a “new” plant….. did I understand correctly that the runner can continue making up to 15 new plants??? And how many mother plants are there just one? And do you have to pull them up every year to amend the soil? This is my first year planting strawberries and I bought bare roots and I put five plants in two flower boxes…… so next year I take them out and then Amend the soil and replant them back in the flower boxes? I bought “Honeoye” Bare-Root strawberries….. they are looking good. A couple have started flowering. I planted them on 5-3-23 Zone 7B…..ty and I subscribed 🥰👵🏻. Still learning…
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. The runners and the division of the crown can make up to 15 new plants. The 1 mother crown divides during the season. Yes, you can divide them, replant them, and amend the soil all at the same time.
I like the way you explain and share your knowledge my friend I am new to this plant just planted young plant I still don't know how to have them bear fruit from you I am learning.
My husband's parents had a 38-acre organic strawberry farm, they were the most delicious and biggest strawberries. It was a U-pick or buy them at the strawberry shack in already packed pails/boxes. They were very busy every time they had strawberries for sale. They also used young geese to do the weeding for them, which worked great. They would let them loose every morning and the geese would eat the weeds all day long and leave the developing berries and strawberry plants alone. However, once the berries matured, the geese would take to eating the berries, so his parents would sell off the geese to the Hutterites for processing and get a new batch of young geese the following spring. I wish you all the best in your plans for a strawberry farm. It's a lot of work and very rewarding.
It depends on your starting soil. These are raised beds that are Back To Eden style that I built 6 years ago. I just usually add the amendments on top and rack them in.
Thanks for sharing how to grow strawberries I’m planning on planting them this year. But I saw your dog in the background doing circles. Our dog did the same thing 😊
hello, great video! i have a couple of questions. so 4 years ago, I planted just 3 little strawberry plants and since then, I've got red, juicy, and sweet fruit. However, these plants have started to spead rapidly, and I planted them in the ground, so these taking over about half my whole entire garden! I love my strawberries, but this is too much and they're even getting into my lawn! Ive been thinking about making a raised bed, and I was wondering if I should just get rid of all my old strawberries and get new ones in the bed or take the best-looking mother plants from my garden? the ones I've had are 4 years old, and I'm not sure if they'll continue to spread in the bed. thanks!
Thank you for the video! I bought one plant in 2020 and it has multiplied like crazy. I didn't know that you should move them around. I'm in 8b (SC) too. Is it too late to move them now? I would also like to know how do I prevent the bottom of the strawberries from rotting?
You're welcome. It is a little late to move them now especially if they are producing. To prevent that bottom rot, you need to try to get them elevated. I did a video on that here....ua-cam.com/video/zvSKbT17hZU/v-deo.html. Hope that helps.
Thank you for the info! I am very new to this. I got a little confused with gardening vocabulary lol. I live in New York and don't have grass in my backyard, so I have to use big pots. Do you have any videos on this? Thanks again
Great video! I planted a couple strawberry plants a couple years ago and now I have so many daughter plants. Do the daughter plants put out runners as well, turning them a mother? Does that make sense? lol. If I want to dig up a daughter plant and repot in a container for a gift. Will it produce fruit the same year? Should I pluck out the flowers to get roots established the first year and if it produces runners should I remove them as well the first year? Thanks for your help.
I am in Wisconsin. Just getting out to my strawberry patch. Most plants have flowers already. So I am pretty sure I shouldn’t be digging them up and moving them at this time. What do you think?
Ty for vid. One question here from norway. if you start a new season. And the mother plant have lets say like 8-10 small crowns. Should you then rip off some of the crowns?
Another question. Forgive my ignorance in growing strawberries. If I fertilize and add chicken manure to the strawberries bed, it still considered organic strawberries or not more?
I live in North Texas in zone 9. I planted my strawberries last spring, went through the entire summer by providing shade with a cloth. I prepped them in the fall with straw and checked them a few days ago and they are already putting out runners with little strawberries and look like they are growing. I wanted to amend the soil prior to growth, but can I still do that? I am thinking it's too late and better to feed them fish emulsion. What would you recommend? Thank you for the great info on strawberries!
This is my first year. I planted in an old iron tub. I filled with Horse poop, hay and Miracle grow soil. Something is eating the leaves and there are flies every where. i sprinkled with seven dust. They have strawberries but i think slugs are getting them. I live in Lake Tyler area. Any advice would be great. What are the best kind to plant in this area?
The mixture you used to plant in may not have the correct balance of nutrients for the berries. You need an organic compost to start with. Also make some slug traps by placing a board flat in the bed. In the morning, the slugs will congregate under it and you can kill them.
How long and wide is your strawberry bed!! I thought about adding a top over the top of the bottom box and putting hinges on the back and a handle in the center. So I can cove it when wire to keep birds and other animals out.
Hi! Thanks for the video! Can you please tell me how often I should water them? I’m not planning on doing drip irrigation, just a garden hose. Everything I’ve read online says they need “1-2 inches of water a week.” I have no idea how I’m supposed to determine if I’m giving them that amount or how often to water them based on those instructions.
How long do the plants last? A few years? I just ordered 10 plants today for my daughter she wants strawberry plants. When they arrive should I soak them in water first before planting them?
Friends of ours own a local blueberry farm. They are still harvesting off of bushes that were planted in 1991. No need to soak strawberry plants. Just get them in the ground. We have a lot of planting guides on strawberries. This is our latest......ua-cam.com/video/7_wgo2ylSE4/v-deo.html
Blueberries! I've got one little sad blueberry beneath my pine tree. It's mates all died one super hot August (killed my neighbor's azaleas too) a couple of years ago I think it was now? Anyway it's still knee high & I'm hoping I can give it a better year this year.
2 questions 1. I live in zip code 75762 am I in zone 8 or 8b? 2. I have a dwarf pear tree bought at lowes several yrs. ago. Do not know variety. Last few years the pears are hard and not ripening tree done or what do I need to do?
You should be in 8b. It may be the variety of pear. There are eating pears and canning pears. Usually canning pears are sold at the big box stores. Additionally pears ripen off the tree. Check out the video we did on pears.....ua-cam.com/video/cuMYoyfu3oA/v-deo.html
So I bought one of those seed packets which had a bunch of roots but no green growing and I mistakenly did not put the crown above soil. Did I kill it? After watching your video I dug up the roots and put the crown above soil. Will it take or did I probably kill those seeds?
It will probably be ok. You will just have to monitor it. What is concerning however, is that it had no green when you received it. It sounds like it could have been dead when you got it.
Up here in Eastern Ontario, strawberries fruit the second year (when planting a bare root plant from a nursery). I am curious, when subdividing and planting the mother, will it fruit the same year?
I'm in zone 8b also, how do you overwinter your strawberries? Do you just cover them in mulch, or use some sort of row cover to keep them from freezing on the rare frost occasion?
You mentioned you should only have to buy strawberry plants once, but I've been told that they should be tilled under after 3 years because that's basically the end of their lifespan. I guess in your case, growing in a bed, the runners act as your new plants but you also split and replant the mother crown. I'm wondering how you know when a strawberry plant should be removed because it's hit the end of its lifespan? Or has this not been an issue?
The strawberry plant divides itself in 2 ways. The crown division and the daughter plants. The old strawberry plants with no life left just shrivel up and die. There is only 1 variety that does not produce runners (Alpine strawberry) but it still divides at the crown. Never till them in unless they are dead.
so the method im thinkin is just rip out the dead plants when they die. the runners should replace the old strawberries right? i want a permenant bed of strawberries. i dont understand why i would replant them ?
They need space to grow better and new plants do not only come from runner. They also come from the crowns. Leave the old deal plants for the soil microbiology to feed on.
I planted strawberries last year. This year, they have quadrupled in size. Am I supposed to do anything else to them? I used Black Kow manure last year. We have already gotten strawberries off from this growing season. Now, nothing is really blooming.
Hi! How do you do to make strawberries with a good drainage, please? Also, should I water them deeply and daily? I’m new on a strawberry plant. Starting this week! ❤
Love the dog running in circles in the background, and the cat! Such a great informative video, thank you! Starting my strawberry garden now, thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you Jeff.
He is always running around my chicken coop trying to herd them.
I’m 13 and wanna grow my own strawberries, I even live in Texas! So I know I can trust this a lil bit more, thanks!
Awesome! Good luck with your berry growing. Our variety is called Seascape. They do well here.
@@CountryLivingExperience thanks for the info!
My first year planting strawberries is TX Hill Country. Going to be interesting to see how they do. We always made a little raised pyramid mound and draped the roots over and covered.
We had 15 acres in northwest PA. We set crowns the pinned runners to either side pur rows stayed good for years no need to dig them up and replant.
Thank you so much! I don't live near you, but am also in 8b & didn't realize how to be properly taking care of my favorite berries in the garden! Blessings!!💕

Ok, I just received my Amazon order of 6, strawberry planters. 6"×15"×7"deep. I'll try one more time
Hope those planters work because they can dry out fast. Planting in the ground is better.

Take the best looking mother plants and the biggest ones and keep them. Compost the rest or sell them.
Thank you, that was interesting!
One question, why do you need to replant them in the first place? Just to refresh the soil?
They need to be replanted every season. If you don’t, they will choke each other out.
The dog is hilarious. 😂

I have dug mine up with flowers and green fruit on them before. They didn't seem to mind at all. They have produced just as well as normal.
Ty for vid. One question here from norway. if you start a new season. And the mother plant have lets say like 8-10 small crowns. Should you then rip off some of the crowns?
You're welcome. Yes, always split the mother crown into multiple crowns.
Another question. Forgive my ignorance in growing strawberries. If I fertilize and add chicken manure to the strawberries bed, it still considered organic strawberries or not more?
No problem. It depends on what you feed your chickens. If they have chemicals in their feed, then that can be bad for your strawberries.

You can amend the soil at anytime with strawberries. I just add a lite layer of premium compost.

The mixture you used to plant in may not have the correct balance of nutrients for the berries. You need an organic compost to start with. Also make some slug traps by placing a board flat in the bed. In the morning, the slugs will congregate under it and you can kill them.
The dog in the background is hilarious! 😂
All day, every day.

How long and wide is your strawberry bed!! I thought about adding a top over the top of the bottom box and putting hinges on the back and a handle in the center. So I can cove it when wire to keep birds and other animals out.
4 ft wide and 20 ft long.
An inch of water is about 0.62 gallons. Each plant needs that per week.
Wow the dog behind i love him 😍😍❤️❤️😂😂🐶
I didn’t know East Texas has mountains/hills as seen in the intro? I love strawberries , thx
It has some nice rolling hills. You're welcome
Do you do anything to protect the strawberries over winter?
No, but we have mild winters. If you are further north, you can cover them on straw or hay.
Dog in the background is having a BLAST.
All day, every day.
So do you keep them in the ground from plant up until the next year 6-8 weeks before last frost ?
Yes, usually.
Your dog is so funny! Why does he keep circling the chicken coop? 🙂
He is trying to herd my chicken. That is what Border Collies do.
Blueberries! I've got one little sad blueberry beneath my pine tree. It's mates all died one super hot August (killed my neighbor's azaleas too) a couple of years ago I think it was now? Anyway it's still knee high & I'm hoping I can give it a better year this year.
I hope next year is better. Blueberries need a ton of water for the first five years.
What kind of strawberry should I plant? I like sweet and excellent flavor ?
There are hundreds of varieties. You will have to see what the best varieties for your area are.
@@CountryLivingExperience You might be right... it was just a bushle of roots with a little crown in a package with no green.
What kind of mulch do you use? Thank you!
I don't mulch them currently. I used wood chips in the past.
I bought 8 this year and now I have 42 from runners
Nice!
How do you keep you cat from crapping in your beds? Im a new cat owner and experiencing it
Where is a good place to get strawberry plants online?
Territorial Seed Company
Great vid. Your dog is hilarious!
Thank you
A question... my berries keep growing well and then rest on the ground and rot... any solutions/thoughts on how to remedy this issue? Thanks!
Better draining soil will help. I have an older video about how to prop up the berries. Here: ua-cam.com/video/zvSKbT17hZU/v-deo.html
Put straw beneath the berries as they ripen
Up here in Eastern Ontario, strawberries fruit the second year (when planting a bare root plant from a nursery). I am curious, when subdividing and planting the mother, will it fruit the same year?
These fruit the same year
I'm in zone 8b also, how do you overwinter your strawberries? Do you just cover them in mulch, or use some sort of row cover to keep them from freezing on the rare frost occasion?
I don't do anything with them. They are very hearty and have no problem making it through the winter without protection.
What are your dogs chasing in the background? 😆
He is trying to herd my chickens
Is there a specific time of year to do this ?
In the spring. Same date as the videos release.
so the crowns around mother plant are new strawberry plants?
Yes as well as the daughter plants on ends of the runners.
Can i grow many Strawberry seeds in the same pot or would i have to separate them once they start to Germinate??
I have never grown strawberries from seed.
Do you replant the strawberries every year?
Yes
Thanks for all that information. As runners start showing up from mother plant, is it advisable to cut them to prevent daughter plants growing?
You're welcome. Why would you want to cut off the daughter plants?
@@CountryLivingExperience I don’t want to grow too many daughter plants.
@@CountryLivingExperience by doing that does it make mother plant healthier and have bigger strawberries?
No. The point of the daughter plants is to perpetuate their lifecycle. If you have too many I suppose you can prune some of them off.
Thanks for the tips, only one question, What is the dog doing?
You’re welcome. He is trying to herd my chickens.
@@CountryLivingExperience Very ambitious of him.❤
You mentioned you should only have to buy strawberry plants once, but I've been told that they should be tilled under after 3 years because that's basically the end of their lifespan.
@@CountryLivingExperience so the crowns around the mother are new plants?
@@honeymaeestrabon Yes, the mother is the old one.
so the method im thinkin is just rip out the dead plants when they die. the runners should replace the old strawberries right? i want a permenant bed of strawberries. i dont understand why i would replant them ?
They need space to grow better and new plants do not only come from runner. They also come from the crowns. Leave the old deal plants for the soil microbiology to feed on.
@@CountryLivingExperience thanks for the response! Ill keep proper spacing in mind !
I planted strawberries last year. This year, they have quadrupled in size. Am I supposed to do anything else to them? I used Black Kow manure last year. We have already gotten strawberries off from this growing season. Now, nothing is really blooming.
Awesome. Wait until next spring and then divide them and replant.
I'm allergic to strawberries. And it was difficult to pay attention with the dog running around in circles. Some good tips
They were the hardest for me to grow
Blessings!
Hi! How do you do to make strawberries with a good drainage, please? Also, should I water them deeply and daily? I’m new on a strawberry plant. Starting this week! ❤
They do not need much water at all. Water once per week deeply.
@@CountryLivingExperience deeply? What exactly do you mean by that? I'm researching to start my first garden!
@@courtneyturner3326 Watering deeply just means watering for a long time. Not just a few minutes. Let it soak in deep.
Can I mix different verifies of plants ????
Yes but why?
