RAM 1500 5.7 HEMI Oil change. Is 5W30 Better than 5W20 for the HEMI?

  • Today I change the oil and filter on a ram 1500. It has the 5.7 hemi. Many people argue that the 5w20 does not provide enough protection, especially at hotter temperatures.
    Other people get upset that someone would use anything other than 5w20.
    Some myths are that MDS will not function, as well as a DTC being set for incorrect oil viscosity.
    5w30 is also recommended for the 5.7s in the HD Trucks, the only difference is that those are not equipped with MDS.
    It is not that the MDS can’t function with 5w30, the real reason 5w20 is recommended in the MDS engine is emissions. The same reason MDS exists in the first place.
    With 5w30 it is slightly thicker, and it takes slightly more fuel to turn it over. While the extra amount of fuel used is very tiny, it adds up over millions of vehicles produced.
    Don’t be mistaken and think that the recommended fluids and maintenance schedules are there to help us make the car last a long time. They are merely sufficient enough to get you to the end of the warranty period.

    5w30 has been used for decades in most pickup trucks and all the Hemi’s did their trials with 5w30 including all the SRT engines…the only reason they use the 5w20 is for fuel economy…Ford was using it for a while on their ecoboost engines until they found they were having major premature engine failures so they switched to 5w30…the only thing I would do is use the oil filter that the 2009-2010 Hemi’s used or even the SRT oil filter like the Fram Ultra XG2…larger filters and more capacity…with the longer oil change intervals nowadays, these factory recommended filters are too small for such a large engine and when they get plugged up after thousands of kms of use they restrict the flow so use a bigger filter, change the oil more often and don’t idle these Hemi’s or you are going to regret it!…I could be wrong but I feel those small filters coupled with the extended oil change intervals are the reason for the lifter/cam failures…

      Thanks for your comment! I appreciate your input! I do agree with you. 💯💯🤝 better filters and more frequent oil changes definitely help in a lot of ways.

      Ford went to 5-30 because the fuel dilution brings the oil down to a 20 weight if it starts out at a 30 weight and that is the only reason. If they did not dilute oil with fuel so bad the 20 weight would be fine. You guys have a horrible understanding of oil viscosity

      @@scottydavis1813 every engine gets fuel dilution genius!..doesn’t matter what you say was the reason why the 20w oil was inadequate…the fact of the matter is it was inadequate for the application so they went to a heavier weight oil!…most oil related failures are caused by viscosity sheering down to a lesser weight which happens to every oil through its service cycle…that’s why there’s maintenance schedules…stop trying to sound like an oil guru because your not…all I said was Ford changed to a heavier weight because of engine failures…I mentioned nothing about whether it had anything to do with viscosity or anything else for that matter…the rest of my comment was about Hemi engines and my personal experience with them..

      I test hundreds of oil samples a week and have years of records of oil grades and engines but I was just guessing about the oil. I stand corrected. I did have an expert as your self mention fuel dilution and the 6.4 diesel and 3k OCI once

    If you like the Motomaster products, their premium oils are also very good and the OE+ filters are very good as well and less than $12…I use the same filter that is used on the Ford 3.0, 3.5, and 3.7 Duratec engines on my 6.4 Hemi…it’s the OE+ MOPH10575…same filter as the Hemi filter but its longer…the Mobile 1 is the M1-212 filter I believe which is also a great filter…the Castrol is the CAS10575…same as the CAS10060 just longer…

    So you think the engineers are just trying to make the hemi last for its warranty period? Lmao. Still cant understand that the problem with our hemis are the fact that the cam shaft is set higher into the block and at low rpm or idle the cam gets very little oil splash period! Just keep your rpms up and stop thinking a different oil viscosity is going to fix it lol.

    • @colin7761
      @colin7761  2 місяці тому +5

      🤷‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️ They certainly do only care about it making it past its warranty. The main reason for failure is lack of maintenance. I never claimed running 5W30 prevents you from getting failed lifters. I can say that regularly maintaining the fluids will get you by just fine. It’s scientifically proven to protect better. The only reason 5w20 is suggested in the owners manual is emissions. Running 5w20 will use less emissions, while the amount is not a large one, it makes a difference over a large amount of vehicles. If it wasn’t for the gov. These would still be running 5w30 🤷‍♂️ 💯💯🤝
