    The key to sharpening is a consistent and repeated angle every stroke. That guide does just that. I used to freehand all my blades and got pretty good at sharpening to a shave quality in short time. That honing guide you sent me brought that to the next level. The only thing different is I matched the angles to what the chisels came with. That trick to get a repeatable 25 degrees is GOLD and I will be making one for myself. guess I know what this weeks project will be hahaha.. going back over all my sharps.

      Nice, I am the same when it comes to freehand sharpening. I could also get a razor edge but I found out I was getting off on my primary bevel over time!! Happy sharpening brother 😁✌️&💙

    Great video Todd, I love seeing how others sharpen their chisels and planes, some of my favourites are Paul sellers, Rob Cosman, Matt Estlea (fastest dovetail in the world) and a Spanish guitar builder Pablo Requena who's technique has changed how I sharpen.
    Also if anyone is interested on Lie Nielsen download site there's a free download for a sharpening jig/protrusion stop block

    I have a boatload of chisels to sharpen, Flat Chisels, Lathe Chisels and Carving Chisels.

      I only use 2 gouges at present. A 1/4" inside cannel and a 3/4" outside cannel gouge. I love them but on the outside one I take the stone to the gouge on the inside cannel I use a small round slip stone for it!! I also have a multi shaped stone for irregular shaped cutting tools!!

    Where was this video yesterday when I was sharpening my new 1.5 inch Ashley isles. 😂. All good. It’s got a razors edge on it now!
    Aside. I like having a really coarse (320?) diamond stone for those nicked/dinged/new edges.

      If memory serves. My version of that honing guide also includes measurements of protrusion to achieve specific bevel angles. Just to add

    Ha, there’s timing! As you know, a brand new set of chisels popped through my door this week. I got them out and thought, well, they ain’t sharp. Historically (hysterically?), I am really good at not being able to sharpen things very well. Like pro level. You want a dull blade? I’m your man. So this was a really great, well timed video. Love the protrusion guide, simple and clever.

    • @SweetTGuitars
      @SweetTGuitars  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you brother! I was the same when I first got the Narex chisels. I tried to do it freehand and I got pretty good at it but as you can see in the video, I got the bevel off the proper angle!! The guide is so helpful! Next stop, Hand Plane blades!!✌️&💙

    Not seen that jig for setting the angle before. Could an even more compact idea be to scribe two lines on the shank of the chisel and across a plane iron, to mark where to line it up to the honing guide edge, maybe? Could even use a sharpie over those lines and wipe it off the main surface so that it just remains in the scored line?

    • @SweetTGuitars
      @SweetTGuitars  9 місяців тому

      The method you mention is how I use to do it but the chisel changes length over time and the protrusion block accounts for that! That is a completely viable option for someone who doesn't use theirs that often but I've found myself sharpening my bladed tools more and more often lately just because I love how they work so much better when they're sharp! Thank you for the comment and the suggestion brother! Peace & Love

    edit: i'm going to get one of those honing guides for the boy. he makes a good edge but that will give hime the consistency and keep him from rounding over the edge even better than he does now.

      It does and I knew it was time to sharpen again. I figured a video was in order😁 I spent around 5 hours getting my 8 chisels back to what I consider to be "perfect" work ready condition. I had never flattened the backs completely and I know that is so important. Thank you for the comment!✌️&💙
