Thank you so much! My hubby, who doesn't know a hammer from the heel of his shoe, has a set of chisels. Why, I don't know because he has never done any work where chisels would be needed. These chisels have been banging around in his small toolbox since forever. Now I know how to sharpen them and use them for my projects. Yes, I am the handy one in the family. He likes to say that he is in charge of finance and clean up. LOL!

Everything old again is new again. Yep was here 6 mos ago and came back to watch this again. but the thought today is that once Trena moves back to her hometown, it will not be a short trip for Scott to "Pop" down for a visit. but just goes to show you even pro's can take the time to learn something new. I've been following Trena now for couple years and its nice to see her learn a new Technique! and best of all thanks for sharing. both Trena and Scott. ECF

Well this completes the circle!. first I view two of my favorite YT channels working together. Thomas Johnson and Scott, and Now Scot and Trena! Its nice to see them being close enough to be able to travel to one another's shops. So besides Trena learning the proper way to shapen her chisles, I got a refresher course I can see there is lots I forgot and Scott brought them back to the surface of my being.Thank you both for this. and for all that you do. it is really appreciated. Great to see both of my favorite you-tubers collaborating again! I have been using a Tormek wet sharpening system for the last 4 years. Just love it. Will give you an unbelievably super sharp chisels, plane blades, and knives. I also have the stones and guides, but takes a lot more time to do. Thanks for the tutorial Scott!!
For everyone who is scared to try just go for it. You won’t ruin your chisel even if you do a horrendous job it can be easily fixed. Keeping the edge sharp as you go is so nice and doesn’t shut down your work flow because everything in the shop had become a butter knife lol. I find sharpening very therapeutic but have been told I’m weird. Good luck you’ve got this.

We sharpened chisels on a belt sander working on carousel horses. We had to be fast, not accurate. Tested on a piece of wood. Nice job taking your time.

Ok! No more chiseling concrete with those now! Ha! I bought a set of water stones about a year ago, and they’ve made a huge difference! As always, there’s a learning curve, but it’s not too steep. One of the big things to remember is that the stones wear away and require flattening every so often. I bought Norton stones along with their flattener, but I’ve come to discover that the flattening stone has a crown in the middle! I’ve tried everything under the sun to flatten the flattener including putting it on a belt sander, all to no avail! Still researching other ways to flatten the stones! Great episode as always!
I have always enjoyed your videos and your magical touch and sensibility in furniture repair and restoration. However, I have also always cringed whenever I have seen you working with a chisel. I am very glad that you have received instruction now in how to sharpen a chisel. If you actually follow the instruction, I think that you will be amazed at how much better and easier some of your tasks will be, Thank you very much for sharing.

My great uncle used to put me to work when I visited using an old plane to shave fire wood for tinder. He kept the iron sharp, so my 6 year old self had no issues shaving tinder. He bragged his planes, chisels, spoke shaves and knives were the sharpest around and if anyone had questions about hiring him to sharpen theirs ....well.... he'd grab the smallest kid and have them shave fire wood for tinder (also a lucrative sideline for him {25 cents for a small bag of shavings to light a few fires) and it kept all of his grandkids busy)
You absolutely can! It’s so hard to mess up bad enough that it can’t be fixed. I would say start with a cheap chisel first to learn though. Good luck you can do it.
I improved the ongoing sharpness of my chisels and plane blades when I went to the leather strop process. It's a good quick touch up that keeps them razor sharp, and lengthens the time between having to get out the stones and spend more time.
Boy, that takes me back.... Great explanation. You don't have to use that fancy jig, but it helps. Practice sliding the chisel on the stone without raising or lowering it. I would suggest a nagura, or dressing, stone to create a nice sharpening slurry on fine (soft) waterstones.
@Trena~ Nice tutorial with a very straight forward and quick technique for "maintaining" your chisels. I couldn't help but think about your sweet Dad sharpening your chisels for you in a recent video. If you start maintaining your chisels, what are you going to have your Dad do for you, when your parents come for a visit though?! I've used the Mark II for a few years and it's excellent for setting the primary bevel on a chisel that's been hand sharpened at God knows what angle and the tip may not even be square. It's even better for setting a micro bevel. I also use sandpaper and would have started at 100 grit on a chisel that's been butchered. I go to at least 800 grit (front and back) which removes all tool marks. Sandpaper and stone grits are not the same. Since I don't earn my living with my tools, I'm not as fussy.
I'd like to add that It's very important to periodically flatten sharpening stones (not necessary with diamond stones) throughout the chisel sharpening/flattening process. It's also a good idea to clean the brass wheel on the Mark ll before moving to the next highest grit stone so as not to contaminate the higher grit stone with particles from the lower grit stone. Just my 2 cents.
Some good advice on technique, though that stone combination looked more like a water stone. A whetstone technically is any abrasive stone, oil, water, dry. I'm a bit pickier about cutting edges, a 4000 would be absolute minimum, 8000 makes a huge difference, now I use a 16,000 grit for finish, particularly in hand planes. Once you've gone to stones that fine, you'll not go back. There will be those who say the 4000 is good enough, your choice.
I just throw my chisels in a tool drawer, and when they are not cutting good I just take a file and/or sandpaper to it 😲 - then again I primarily use them for fairly rough cuts and mortises. I need to do better by the looks of it 😆
I'm chuckling to myself because having watched Trena doing a lot of her restorations, chisels are more of a beater tool and less of a fine carving tool. Her chisels are getting more love than they've seen in ages. Stop using them to pry off paint cans! I'm kidding!

sorry, but as retired furniture maker, i cannot say how pleased i was when diamond stones arrived on the market. they cut quicker than anything else and don't need flattening, soaking etc etc. it takes me 30 seconds to take a dull chisel back to razor sharp, which is how you make your money. take time to train your body to freehand the chisel. any angle between 25 and 30 is fine. youtube has turned the act of sharpening a chisel into a ritual that needs incense and chanting etc.
Nothing wrong with his technique, but I was taught it a little bit different: No micro bevel, once my irons/knives/chisels are sharp I just hone, I don't usually reshapen them. The more frequent you hone the edge, the less time you'll have to spend doing it. I have a jig, but I don't use it anymore, once you get it into your muscle memory you don't really need one and it's quicker without one. 25 degrees is what is taught, but it's not really THAT important. Also, putting planes on the side is a bad idea. You risk hurting yourself and you risk hurting the iron if you work with scewdrivers, clamps etc. The iron will not be hurt if resting on a wooden surface, unless there are a bunch of screws or stuff where you put down the plane.
@@johnsfurniturerepair Also, once the back of the chisel/iron is flat, you don't really have to worry about it. you can get rid of the burr by using your thumb, or just using the tool on wood. You really don't need to flatten it every time you resharpen
Yes that's all fine basic sharpening, but... when you making restorations/repairs etc you don't have or you don't want to spend time sharpening chisels, that's the reality of things, so why don't you consider save your self time and frustration by investing (if possible) on a Work Sharp - WS3000 system or even an older model 2000 (second hand for half the price) they all do excellent clean and fast work on chisels and planers.
I don't like chisels JFR. Why ?....because I nearly cut my finger off with one. As a guitar player that didn't go down to well with me. Cool vid but will leave really sharp chisels to the experts and keep all my fingers thank you very much.
Scott is good..but not as good as you. I bought the inexpensive set of chisels. I discovered a half and quarter inch more expensive chisel made of better steel hold there edge much better. Those two sizes seem to be what I use the most. I got the set angle sharpener with the cheap set of chisels and it works well. That's my experience.
Hi Trena, i am a 71 yr old retired carpenter and joiner.......With all due respect to the chisel sharpening technique in the video, may i say that if i had used anything other than my oil stone and a drop of oil to sharpen my chisels and planes of various widths and lengths. i would very likely have been dismissed........We were taught to sharpen our tools by hand, and indeed they were kept sharp without the use of these unnecessary gadgets, and certainly not a leather strap/ strep?.........The time it takes Scott to sharpen a simple chisel, i could probably have hung a door......Our methods were simple to learn and perfectly sharpened for the job in hand.......As for my oil stone, it will automatically take on a very slight dip in the middle, which prevents you seeing the edge of a cut.........In my professional opinion, you are using the correct method, a back bevel on the grinding wheel, again, freehand, ans a leading edge on the When the leading edge becomes too big, simply re grind the back bevel.......Ple ase carry on with your own method..........Stay well, and keep up your amazing work. 😘

sorry, but as retired furniture maker, i cannot say how pleased i was when diamond stones arrived on the market. they cut quicker than anything else and don't need flattening, soaking etc etc. it takes me 30 seconds to take a dull chisel back to razor sharp, which is how you make your money. take time to train your body to freehand the chisel. any angle between 25 and 30 is fine. youtube has turned the act of sharpening a chisel into a ritual that needs incense and chanting etc.

I sharpen my chisels and test them by shaving a bit of hair on my arm not a fingernail.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, in saying that, get yourself a bench grinder with Aluminium Oxide wheels to grind the primary bevel.
I bought the diamond stones on Amazon. They never wear
Mine goes from 300 to 15000 grits.
Nothing wrong with his technique, but I was taught it a little bit different:
No micro bevel, once my irons/knives/chisels are sharp I just hone, I don't usually reshapen them. The more frequent you hone the edge, the less time you'll have to spend doing it.
I have a jig, but I don't use it anymore, once you get it into your muscle memory you don't really need one and it's quicker without one.
25 degrees is what is taught, but it's not really THAT important.
Also, putting planes on the side is a bad idea. You risk hurting yourself and you risk hurting the iron if you work with scewdrivers, clamps etc. The iron will not be hurt if resting on a wooden surface, unless there are a bunch of screws or stuff where you put down the plane.

@@johnsfurniturerepair Also, once the back of the chisel/iron is flat, you don't really have to worry about it. you can get rid of the burr by using your thumb, or just using the tool on wood. You really don't need to flatten it every time you resharpen
Yes that's all fine basic sharpening, but... when you making restorations/repairs etc you don't have or you don't want to spend time sharpening chisels, that's the reality of things, so why don't you consider save your self time and frustration by investing (if possible) on a Work Sharp - WS3000 system or even an older model 2000 (second hand for half the price) they all do excellent clean and fast work on chisels and planers.

I don't like chisels JFR. Why ?....because I nearly cut my finger off with one. As a guitar player that didn't go down to well with me. Cool vid but will leave really sharp chisels to the experts and keep all my fingers thank you very much.

Scott is good..but not as good as you. I bought the inexpensive set of chisels. I discovered a half and quarter inch more expensive chisel made of better steel hold there edge much better. Those two sizes seem to be what I use the most. I got the set angle sharpener with the cheap set of chisels and it works well. That's my experience.

Hi Trena, i am a 71 yr old retired carpenter and joiner.......With all due respect to the chisel sharpening technique in the video, may i say that if i had used anything other than my oil stone and a drop of oil to sharpen my chisels and planes of various widths and lengths. i would very likely have been dismissed........We were taught to sharpen our tools by hand, and indeed they were kept sharp without the use of these unnecessary gadgets, and certainly not a leather strap/ strep?.........The time it takes Scott to sharpen a simple chisel, i could probably have hung a door......Our methods were simple to learn and perfectly sharpened for the job in hand.......As for my oil stone, it will automatically take on a very slight dip in the middle, which prevents you seeing the edge of a cut.........In my professional opinion, you are using the correct method, a back bevel on the grinding wheel, again, freehand, ans a leading edge on the When the leading edge becomes too big, simply re grind the back bevel.......Ple ase carry on with your own method..........Stay well, and keep up your amazing work. 😘
