  • The BMW X5 has been a staple of the luxury SUV segment for over two decades, blending everyday practicality with the brand's renowned driving dynamics. For 2024, BMW has given its mid-size crossover a comprehensive refresh to keep it competitive against newer rivals like the Genesis GV80 and Jeep Grand Cherokee L.
    Revised Styling Inside And Out
On the outside, the 2024 X5's updates are quite subtle. The grille is new and the headlights and taillights have been restyled, but you'll need to park the old and new models side-by-side to truly notice the differences. It's a similar story inside, where BMW's latest curved display houses the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen. The design is clean and modern, even if the iDrive 8.5 operating system (coming via an over-the-air update this summer) feels a bit convoluted compared to some rival setups.
Under the skin, the big news for 2024 is the addition of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine in the X5 40i, which bumps output to a stout 375 horsepower. The V8-powered M60i soldiers on with 523 hp, which is plenty to hustle this heavyweight SUV down a twisty road with remarkable composure. But the plug-in hybrid 50e model has our eye, with 483 electrified horses and an estimated 40 miles of electric range.
    A BMW First: Hands-Free Driving
No matter which powertrain you choose, the 2024 X5 plays in the premium sandbox, with a spacious and well-appointed cabin backed by the latest in infotainment and driver assistance technology. In fact, the X5 is the first BMW to offer hands-free driving on certain mapped highways, although we didn't get the chance to test this during our brief first drive.
The X5 may be larger and heavier than the sedans BMW built its performance reputation on, but it still delivers a more engaging driving experience than many competitors. The steering is precise and well-weighted, and the suspension manages to strike an impressive balance between ride comfort and handling prowess - especially in the X5 M60i we sampled. While the Porsche Cayenne is even sharper, few other three-row luxury SUVs can match the BMW's back-road chops.
Pricing remains in line with rivals from Mercedes, Audi, and others, starting around $66,000 for a base rear-drive X5 40i and cresting past $90,000 for a loaded M60i model. The value proposition is stronger in the lower trims, but even at the upper end, the 2024 X5 makes a compelling case as an all-around luxury SUV with enough performance cred to satisfy enthusiast drivers. BMW's quintessential family hauler just got a little quicker and a little smarter.
