  • Toyota issued a Safety Recall for almost 100,000 2022 and 2023 Tundra's. Watch this video to get all the facts... this could get a little complicated for Tundra Owners. Let's hope Toyota has a really good plan... so far the Remedy for this recall is still Pending.
    The big question is can Toyota get to the bottom of the Tundra Engine failures we have been seeing across the web.

    Years ago scotty kilmer warned that replacing the v8 with this turbo six would be a huge mistake. Looks like he was right again.

      Scotty called it even before the trucks hit the assembly line that Toyota going from their V8 to the Twin Turbo V6 was going to be a disaster, turbo engines have to be built stronger to handle the extra stress and pressures put on the engines. Plus he also said gas mileage would be worse if you keep kicking those turbos in. Scotty knows his stuff!

    True story: I was Toyota Journeymen Expert Technician ( I graduated from the Toyota T-ten technical program in auto service) in Minneapolis from 2004-2009 at a large volume dealership (Walser Toyota) . During my time there they had a crew of 3 master techs that would replace about 2-3 frames a day with a large back log, this is all they did while I worked there during this time. Toyota also only covered the frame any component attached to the frame was on the owners dime so a "free" frame if you met the right dates could still cost you 2k out of pocket. Also the frame recall happened only after Toyota was sued it was not in good faith like many ppl seem to believe.

      Aka: my 2007 sequoia that will enviably snap in half at any moment if I even dare look at it in the wrong way, nice to just miss the recall by a month after 3 ownership and never being addressed….Jesus take the wheel..🫡🙏

      we had both our 2003 & 2005 frames rust out. We dumped them, but still got 175+miles on both. Our 2014 & 2019 5.7's ran forever, BUT 12mpg was tough.

      Interesting because the people that needed frames in our area, were not charged one dime for the frame and any parts that had to be replaced as a result of that. I guess I must just live in a great area.

      Toyota stopped making the V8 in 2022-ish for the 'merican market. All new vehicles with a V8 is using old, new stock engines stockpiled prior to decommissioning.

    Don't praise toyota too much for doing recalls. Every time i got a recall for my tacoma it was because of a class action lawsuit filed by someone....
    The notion that toyota just automatically does the right thing is not entirely correct.

      Exactly. They were hit w/BIGGEST fine in US history by NHTSB just 10yrs ago $1B ..for hiding defects ! Ppl should know this. Should've never left Ford trucks. 😪

      Very true ! 5 weeks later and still no parts to do short block replacement. Paying a lease on a truck that I'm not driving... additionally, these scum bags gave me their parts truck to drive until it's fixed because they didn't renew their agreements with budget car rentals. They avoid my calls and never provide straight answers... never again with Toyota

      Ford doesn't have issues with the Ecoboost engine. It's been proven that if you change the engine oil every 5k miles, it's a good engine. Toyota went to the V6 twin turbo to compete with Ford's Ecoboost.

    I’ve been posting for almost a year to stay away from the new Tundra. My 2022 blew at 28,000 miles. Toyota was aware of this since mid 2022 and has been covering up the main bearing issue. Toyota will not replace the engine with a long block they provide the dealers with short blocks to rebuild, crazy. The cost of my rebuild was $32,000. Needless to say, I started the Lemon Law claim the same week it blew up. Six months later I received my buyback check. Stay far far away from the new Tundra!

      Love my 24 Tundra. But it’s also got 1978 miles on it and hasn’t broken 😂. Of course all this info started spilling out like 2 weeks after I bought it. I’ve changed my oil twice already, really praying that mine doesn’t have any crap in it.

      I own from new a 2007 Crewmax. I warned people about not buying this truck when it first came out. They still bought it despite numerous warnings from many corners. Now they are suffering through what I see as basically a self inflicted wound. The manufacturers need to fight back against the EPA, spend advertising money with TV and radio campaigns that trash the disgusting EPA. EPA now destroying our electric grid.

      The Car Car Nut Toyota Master Mechanic recommends first oil change at 1,000 miles, and it makes total sense for a reason.

    Had multiple issues with my '23 Tundra but specifically engine stall or dead throttle was a safety concern. I kept taking it in multiple times and all they would tell me was that unless I can replicate the issue right at the dealership they would not do anything about it. Opened case with Toyota USA and they told me that legally they are not obligated to repair anything unless I can replicate the issue right infront of their tech. This dead throttle issue was random, and sometimes would happen while I'm pulling out of a subdivision onto a busy road....to me that's a safety concern and I would not compromise my family in it. Swapped it for a '23 GMC Sierra 3.0 Duramax and could not be happier.

      That's BS... try are trying to avoid lemon laws claims. Force them to take the car. Leave the keys in the night drop box and get a receipt each time your warranty claim fails.
      It took six attempts to get my clicking front left CV axle in a 2017 Prius Prime replaced under warranty... and it had a cancelled TSB about the issue in early production 4th gen Prius/Prime!
      Invoking the Texas lemon law got Toyota's attention and it was finally replaced under warranty. Otherwise the vehicle has been perfect.

    A new engine for the new Tundra is about $35,000 vs about $8000 for the 5.7. Can you imagine paying that out of warranty. Obscene. I own from new a 2007 Crewmax 5.7. Toyota has lost me. Also time to dismantle the EPA.

    This is why an early oil change less than 1000 miles is always good idea on a new vehicle. If your worried about the condition of your engine have an oil analysis done by Blackstone and see exactly how much wear metal is in the oil.

      Good advice, you'll sleep a lot better knowing. There are many others that perform this service as well. It's routine with commercial diesel engines.

      It doesnt matter. Once the bearings get worn out prematurely its over for your engine. You can oil flush every 500 miles and still have damage from the metal debris.

      ​@@kalbs89thats not wheel HP or torque. i have a 2019 crewmax. wheel HP and torque is definitely lower than the 381 and 401 as advertised. it is probably not 260 but wheel HP is not 381.

    If I was one of those owners, I'd probably get the entire outside washed and dried pristinely, and slowly video record the entire exterior of the truck, along with documented how the fitment of the hood over is and all that kind of stuff. Those Techs are not going to be careful with these trucks while doing the recall work, and a lot of those finishes are going to get maimed and marred in the process.

      Yes. The recall AND warranty work is only 75% reimbursed by the manufacturer. So the techs that are going to do this work will be the LOWEST PAID ! I am sure that THEY will ensure that the panel fit is of the highest quality. lol

    Toyota didn't necessarily step up "on their own behalf" as you give them credit for. because the engine could fail at speed, it's considered a safety issue, thus the NHTSA either requires (or at least pressures) the recall for legal/liability reasons

      Too late! Scotty Kilmer, aka "Mr. Toyota" has already produced several new videos about bad Toyota's, his new video "New Toyota's Are Crap" explains how and why bad things have happened to their once excellent build quality.
      Meanwhile, if you own a recent Toyota truck, I recommend that you have your oil professionally analyzed, if it is nominal then you can relax knowing your engine is ok, and it will show that to the next owner.
      If its not, it will give you valuable tool to make Toyota replace the engine or buy the vehicle back. Sadly, as many angry UA-camrs attest, Tundra's and new Tacoma's are indeed failing. As of 6/1/24 all new Tundra deliveries have been halted.
      Stay away from the new Taco 4 cyl turbos. If you can get a '23 V6 Tacoma at a fair price I'd go for it.
      Camry and Carolla owners can relax, they are totally unaffected by any of these YT horror stories!

      Who knows what they'll replace. Metal debris, you want a complete new engine. Also will the remedy change over the course of the replacements??? Too many questions.

      I'm guessing they'll just analyze the oil, do a manual oil pressure test, and a magic software update so you'll believe it's fine. This will turn into a huge class action for sure.

    There’s been so many issues/design flaws and bad ideas like no tow hooks with this new Tundra. I know if I was with Toyota management I’d be escorting Mr Sweers the head engineer out the door.

    so….,Toyota recognized in Feb last year there was a problem. My calendar says it’s May ‘24. This racks of Toyota just waiting to see if they could get away with not recalling the vehicle. The bean counters at work again…..

      They should’ve never made *that* particular engine. It’s been a dog for years, even in Lexus models coming out of Japan. Instead of layering more complexity on top of complexity, I think carmakers could have gone back to simper OHV engines when they started adding turbos. Overhead cam engines are better, since they breathe better, but it’s just pointless complexity (in a much bigger package) once you throw a blower on.

      I’m about to inform my Lexus dealer my decision to cancel my reservation for one myself this week. I have a tried and true 21 Tacoma that is a beautiful truck and paid off. It seems non sensical for me to spend 80k on something that might fail prematurely not to mention insurance costs and premium gas to boot.

    My 2022 Tundra SR5 TRD off-road at 20k miles the debris got into the 3rd cylinder and it had catastrophic damage they had to replace the engine and one of the turbos

      This is engine debris that didn't get cleared out at the factory. This has NOTHING to do with turbo engines.

      They just keep squeezing profits out until it fails.....then bring in the cover-up crew , quality and reputation mean little to the "carpet" boys these days.

    Toyota will only give a short block and the dealership tech will need to remove, strip and rebuild the short block! The problem with that is the quality of the repair will vary with the technique of the mechanic? Along with the storage of painted body parts while removed from body of vehicle? This is as bad or worse as the frame recall! Look at video or still photos of tech pulling motor on Tundra or Lexus and see how parts are laid on floor for reassembly? There is no room or storage at dealerships for this kind of repair! Plus with a short block the tech will be rebuilding this block with contaminated oily parts from original motor? I think someone screwed the donkey here!

      Yeah, and the mechanic will only be paid so many hours to complete the job, and if it's not enough they will rush. The better more experienced mechanics will probably avoid the job. Sealants won't have enough time to cure before the engine is started...

    I would bet that the 2024 has the same issue. but Toyota doesn't want to issue a STOP SALE order yet. Sales are already down substantially. and they don't want them to completely. Toyota had better issue complete crate motors to their dealers. As it stands, I've seen reports of people getting their Tundras back with scratched & damaged body parts and Toyota is saying to take it up with the dealer.
    Toyota's frame recall was a joke because if it wasn't falling apart, they sprayed it with undercoat and called it good. If it rusted though later, you were out of luck.
    I'm a long time Toyota fan, but I think this is going to be a much bigger issue than they are admitting to.

      @@Robert-un3cf That's why they should be installing complete crate motors. There's about 1,500 Toyota & Lexus dealers in the USA. That means on average, each dealer would be responsible for 70 engines. Good luck on that.

    I am so happy to have my 2015 Silverado, double cab, 4X4. I do have the cylinder deactivation but no issues with mine. My mechanic of 44 years experience stated that doing the longer oil change intervals is what was causing a lot of the lifter issues with the cylinder deactivation. He said to change it every 5 thousand miles instead of the long oil intervals that Amsoil, Mobil 1 and a few others say you can do but change your synthetic oil every 5 thousand times miles and your less likely to have an issue. Please keep in mind, I have never done long oil change intervals nor do I ever plan too. I have 103,000 on my truck that has been trouble free. I did have a few recalls for the software updates but that's it.

    Thank the Lord that back when these NEW Tundra's rolled out, I was smart enough to keep my 2019 Tundra TRD PRO. You couldn't buy that truck from me at any price. Well maybe, but you know what I mean. Just so relieved that I did not pull the trigger on one of those new POS Tundra's.

    I received a recall notice (Fuel Pump), on my Honda Ridgeline in January. They have no idea when the fuel pump will be available. I called the corporate customer service and they said maybe next year. Total 🐂💩

    In my opinion, Toyota took exceptionally good vehicles with engines known for long-term reliability - their naturally aspirated V-6 - and ruined their reputation going to the four cylinder turbo. Sure, it gets better mileage driving around town and they can claim better mileage, but for everything else, everthing that matters, that engine is a BIG step back. I would purchase a 2025 with the old V-6 or even a larger V-6.

    I went and test drove a 24 Tundra today. I have never heard an engine that is supposedly good sound so bad. It sounded like a 3 banger that lost a bearing. No storage... im 6' 3" and barely fit. The saleguys were nice but they were trying to sell me on it being the best light duty truck for towing. My 2020 Ram 1500 is far better.

    It’s called lack of QA inspectors not verifying, the engine block is clean from any debris Toyotas quality has gone downhill in the last few years it’s like the government motto lowest bidder highest quality parts does it mean it works? It sad that Toyota‘s reliability has fallen but bottom line turbos are not the solution but maybe hybrids are for now

    So glad I sold my 23’ Tundra Platinum and my 24’ Tundra TRD Limited. Driving a 24’ GMC AT4X with the 3.0L DuraMax. It’s been incredible so far.

    From what I have seen the engine replacement/rebuild requires the body to be LIFTED OFF THE FRAME! I for one don't have enough faith in the dealer techs to expect the thing to work correctly after they have basically removed the cab from the truck

    Toyota has been riding on the reputation of its name more than anything else for over a decade now.
    They are not what they were in the 80s or 90s by a long shot and there is a reason that most construction companies or fleets that use and abuse trucks the most will not use them.
    It is not just the price.
    Fleets that experiment with them don't have good results.
    The average American consumer that buys a Toyota usually is a more reserved driver and usually does more maintenance than the average owner of of other brands.
    the Toyota truck name at this point is just that....a name and its hyped.
    The American market does also not get the same product that Australia, Japan and the middle east does.
    as far as the American market trucks go I work at a ford dealership and we have more tundra's being traded in for new F 150s more than any other truck at the moment and tacos being traded for rangers.
    And all of these tundras and tacos are only 2-5 years old and falling apart everywhere and they have dismal mpgs.
    Say or believe what you will.
    Many people are loyal to a brand but it is what it is.
    Ford converted me from a GM and Toyota guy after working fleets and seeing what lasts and withstands the most abuse in the past decade.
    Ford is #1 in that area currently.
    Are they perfect?
    None of them are, especially after the pandemic.
    Ford however is the best option offered atm.

      Ford has QC issues and recalls at the moment, and is not as popular in Qatar as Chevrolet/GMC is. I agree with you about Toyota though....

    I think the issue is quality control since the tundras are being build in the US. When the 1st gen came out it was hated with a passion, now its one best trucks, 2nd gen was also criticized, like all tundras have been, i hope i can change the way u view this topic but it is what it is… i must remind you that toyota has been putting turbos in engines for a while now , mainly outside the US as well in some older land-cruisers. And now in the new ones obesely …
    But ill take quality control “hopefully” issues over bad engineering or poorly designed engines.
    My 2023 tundra now has 40k miles, no issues, I got it in November of 2022.
    Yes theres things i don’t like about my tundra, but so far its been good to me

    I called customer service. They told me there’s not fixed yet however if I wanted to rent another vehicle, they’d pay $60 a day! if I didn’t feel safe.

      Regret buying my 2022 tundra . Looking into Toyota civic. Been doing research on multiple cars. Seems most reliable. No problems so far . What ever you do don’t get anything with turbo . No volks or Subaru either.

      @@Kcdaniel88They sold 104,000 Tundras in 2022 and 125,000 in 2023. So no, that is quite a lot! 98k is just under half. And they may extend the recall to more- check the Tundra subreddit - a 2024 Tundra blew up…

    If I owned one of these I would be cutting the oil filter open to check for metal chips and any bits in the oil.
    I feel for the poor customers who own these vehicles. Another good example to lease or PCP instead of buying a car outright .

    I benefited from the frame recall on my 95 1/2 tacoma after driving it for 12 years. They paid 150% of the value. Toyota took care of their owners. This too will pass.

    This is why the Tacoma is so expensive to help pay for all the Tundra engines. Toyota has been making the dealers replace the engine using a short block.

    i Once bought a brand new 2008 silverado truck from a local dealership, It blew the engine at around 12K miles. The reason behind it was there were 3 solenoids that controlled oil flow to the cylinders that failed. No engine warning lights or anything. The dealership did replace it at no cost to me but it took them almost a month they had my truck to replace. I will say after i got the truck back it never seemed to have the same power it did before. Ended up trading it in after only 2 and half years for Dodge (which i also had issues with) 3 years after the dodge i got my Tacoma 2014 going on 11 years with it now and no issues at all.

      That year had oil consumption problems and the manufacturer went bankrupt...Did you have oil consumption issues prior to the engine failure. I heard the problem was partially corrected in MY11 middle...

    My quess is they have you bring your vehicle in do an oil analysis if it comes back bad they will make a future date to replace the short block. If it comes back good they do an engine flush then new oil change and you are good to go.

      An oil analysis won't show anything of value. The engine is chunking itself not wearing.

      How many oil changes did some of these engines go through already? Plus the oil is passed through a filter anyways. Unless it grenades before the first oil change these engines are blowing up due to design issue, not “machining debris”.

      @@Lq32332 I wonder if it isn't a crankshaft warping issue after so many heating and cooling cycles. They advertised in this design a lightweight crankshaft. I have seen this engine under severe load without failure or problems. You are correct that the filter should catch any debris before it hits the main bearing. It could be possible on that debris from manufacturing was after the filter which damages the main bearing then it was caught by the filter. After damage was done it takes time to be catastrophic. That type wear from a damaged bearing would show up in the filter and possibly oil test IMHO.
      I would like to see the oil flow priority setup on this engine.

    On the bright side, people get a new engine. I’d be thrilled if my old Fj had a recall like this to be totally honest 😂. I would also be thrilled if this happened on a newer vehicle with 30-50k on it. It’s like rolling back the hands of time on your vehicle to a certain extent.
    Find a dealer with a reputable group of mechanics. After a few of them they will get decently quick at the job, and you’ll get a warranty on the engine. You’ll also get a new turbo, because those are definitely compromised by the metal contamination.
    Theres a bright side to this kind of thing.

    I really tried convincing my mom not to get the third gen tundra and get a 2021 1794 edition. Warned her that this is a brand new from the ground up engine and we don’t know what problems may occur. She refused and was hard set on getting a new truck at the time. Didn’t think it would be this bad though. I just checked her vin. Hers was made in 8/23. Does she qualify for the recall? She also cancelled her extended warranty. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    I have a new Toyota tundra 24 hybrid max. The amount of shutter while I am towing and just general driving is disturbing I have brought it to corporates attention have a special tech come out and try to tell me it’s normal. Then drove with him with a trailer which they can’t test with a trailer, total bs as most truck guys pull equipment. He felt the shudder and said I will have to ask around. At any point it feels the drive train could drop out, something isn’t right and Toyota seems to not want to acknowledge it. Disappointing considering by 12 tundra has 330k miles and rock solid.

    Same issue with the hyundai and kia 2.0 turbo engines. Metal shavings caused many many engine failures.
    Its not any fun to go through, especially with a brand new very expensive vehicle

    Own a 2018 Honda Civic since new(non turbo). Honda warranted the ac compressor seal beyond normal warranty. It was recently fixed for no cost (48,000 miles). Honda customer for life!

    Clearly a lack of quality control issue. CLEARING debris is a no brainer in engine machine work.
    For a $50k+ truck, quality cannot be expected and relied on, even for Toyota.
    Made in USA has negative connotations and means nothing anymore.

    I got a 2024 so I might have dodged that bullet. I'll be testing my oil to check for presence of excess metals.

    Some Hyundai/Kia engines seem to be having the same problem. I wonder if they share crankshaft supplier ?

    There were over 200K Tundras sold over those two years. How did they come up with only 100K to recall? If they knew enough at the time of manufacture to know there was debris only on certain engines, why did those 100K go out the door?

    Unfortunately the days of Toyota being the best in durability and longevity is over. Over worked, forced air, small engines is the solution nobody asked for. Just another over complicated, over engineered, sloppily assembled mess like everything else out there now.

    This is a similar issue that Hyundai had with their 2.0L and 2.4L engines. Sad Toyota has this.

    Toyota will "remedy" things right as they always do to take care of their costumers! They built their company from fixing problems right the first time permanently! The frame issue , for me, was an obvious fix that cost 1 dollar for a simple tube of caulk. One specific hole in the frame was in a bad spot on the wheel well and water would shoot in the frame. I saw the tiny issue and fixed it the first week I had the truck. Toyota over corrected this tiny defect by replacing tons of frames on costumer vehicles. They went above and beyond to help costumers as they always strive hard to do!! I probably could have gotten a new frame but the one dollar fix kept my truck safe!

    When you mentioned the old frame issue Im surprised you didnt mention that they completed coated these new frames so that is almost guaranteed not to happen again. And I dont even drive a toyota
