Based on where the snow has melted on the roof I would check the attic in those areas. It means the insulation is not adequate enough. This is where spray foam comes into its glory. They can do some more blown-in in the area. They just need to check that the roof inside has baffle venting and that the soffits are vented as well. If there is inadequate air flow then mould will develop on the inside of the roof structure.

People aren't really hoarders if they are happy to see the stuff go, people probably had family members drop a household on them and they intended on sorting through it then had this crap happen with their house. Its hard to deal with 2 major things at once.

  • @sdowdsoc

A lot of ignorant comments here.
They are not hoarders, have had a few households of family stuff dumped on them which they no doubt intended to sort out later.
The basement they probably used like most people do with spare rooms and just throw their junk in there.
When you do work long hours, the last thing you feel like doing is sorting through piles of stuff.

@@maxxmich not by the clinical definition. A hoarder has a hoard these people had stuff dumped on them, and wanted to get rid of it. The only reason why they probably didn't get rid of it until this happened was the family drama that is caused when you toss stuff out. One of my uncles used to drop off car's, boats and shipping containers on my other uncles farm he made the "mistake" of getting rid of one reached out car and 12 years later the other uncle is still on about it.

but above all , I so loath that kind fireplace , just build it proper of brick as an open one with a strong airflow in the BRICKED smoke vent rather then sticking metal pipes and smother them in brick for 'looks' sake yes yes having a little gate on the fireplace feels good but then you get a free stand one that you connect with pipes and nothing else , and personally i gota admit i prefer a open bricked one like grand parents house hade , with a proper ''spark safe'' stoned front part of course as with a ''spark guard'' metal fence its just as safe like a sealed one and honestly a bit safer to handle when ''active'' as far i care then one where a person has to fiddle with a hatch with one hand while jaming more wood into it or such things

The husband's back was broken in an accident, It took 6 years to recover. The wife was working a full time job, plus trying to take care of her husband (which, having had to take care of my mother, is a full time job in itself).
Their income is less because the husband can't work, so they have to put off fixing things. He can't lift anything, she is exhausted every day, things pile up. I would bet serious money that they were both dealing with untreated depression due to their circumstances. And then their parents pass away, so they have to deal with that, they can't afford storage, the husband can barely lift anything, she is stressed the hell out, so they just stash it in their house. Thinking they will get around to sorting out the garbage and the keepsakes, when they can.
They aren't bad people, they just had problems that overwhelmed them, and got out of hand. But when Mike came and offered to simply help them clear out the garbage? They agreed, with no sign of argument or resentment.
