Based on where the snow has melted on the roof I would check the attic in those areas. It means the insulation is not adequate enough. This is where spray foam comes into its glory. They can do some more blown-in in the area. They just need to check that the roof inside has baffle venting and that the soffits are vented as well. If there is inadequate air flow then mould will develop on the inside of the roof structure.
I get that in Canada the weather is WAY MORE extreme but those brick sills (bricks vertical @ 3:25) is the STANDARD way of making sills in Netherlands, where brick is the main building material of houses (it acts as both frame AND siding)
We do brick sills still to this day, but they're on a 22.5 deg angle and we dont get snow. Maybe it was a foreign bricky? But never do brick on the flat, thats just stupid

The only reason why they probably didn't get rid of it until this happened was the family drama that is caused when you toss stuff out. One of my uncles used to drop off car's, boats and shipping containers on my other uncles farm he made the "mistake" of getting rid of one reached out car and 12 years later the other uncle is still on about it.

Blaze King Fireplaces are the best wood burning fireplaces. We had 1 in my family home when I was young, and it heated the home to where we had to open doors and windows in the middle of Winter.

I had friends whose various family members kept dropping their "stuff" with them for safekeeping (and yes, some of this was after loved ones had died). They had a big enough house and even a garage at the time but it became excessive. Kind of crept up on them over the years. I believe their first solution was to say no more stuff, then telling people to come back and get what you want/need. Then they began to hold sales and to donate. It was a massive endeavour. I moved away while all this was in progress but my guess is they eventually got it done. They were trying to be honouring and respectful of others and to share their benefit of space but it was never-ending. They have now since sold and moved elsewhere and hopefully with only their belongings.
Mike is generous - I am surprised that the producers didn't reject this one after finding they were possible hoarders. Maybe they should have sent one person to visit the home first.
The roof overhang is too short. The rain is driving straight into the brick. I would have tried to extend that overhang another 4 to 5 inches. If it could be done and still look good. I was surprised the Hoaders let Mike haul away so much stuff. I really like this episode. Holmes on Homes is a better show than Inspection.
Stop calling them hoarders, they are old and can’t really lift anything, one of them back is broken, there parents died, they don’t have space, and they would have fought tooth and nail to keep the stuff, plus you never know what you could need, a very specific item could be of use one day, so keep stuff sometimes, m’kay? Also they can’t just go like: “1 2 3 all our stuff is gone we have space now lets go”

do love brick , just like wood but you gota sodding use it right and make sure you show respect how mother gaia will affect either in all ways but above all , I so loath that kind fireplace , just build it proper of brick as an open one with a strong airflow in the BRICKED smoke vent rather then sticking metal pipes and smother them in brick for 'looks' sake yes yes having a little gate on the fireplace feels good but then you get a free stand one that you connect with pipes and nothing else , and personally i gota admit i prefer a open bricked one like grand parents house hade , with a proper ''spark safe'' stoned front part of course as with a ''spark guard'' metal fence its just as safe like a sealed one and honestly a bit safer to handle when ''active'' as far i care then one where a person has to fiddle with a hatch with one hand while jaming more wood into it or such things
Hoarder here. Hoarding is a recognized mental health issue. I'm better able to manage my problem thanks to a big dose of antidepressants every morning. I've had help. Thank Goddess. But it's an on going battle.
The couple had kept a lot of stuff from their life. They were talked into getting rid of it. Their stuff went into dumpsters. It was greatly disrespected. It should have been donated. Donating is more work than trashing. I felt bad for them. Mike and crew did a fantastic job on the house as usual. A true force to be reconded with!
most donation centers wont take bulk stuff like this espically if they now its from a hoarder house couse god nows what dieses it has it could make people sick its easer to load it into a dumpster and haul it out not to mention the time it takes to sort whats trash and whats still usable look up videos of people cleaning these sorts of house and youll then understand why it was all trashed
Would love to see a follow up in a year, would you be stunned to find the House full of STUFF ?, not at all, i have known two pack rats over my lifetime....Both Great Human beings ..But with a twist, there is some clinical name for it... but i just called them Grandma and Pop.
I would not do work in that house until they threw out all their worthless crap. They are hoarders and don't realize how bad they've kept their house. It's disgusting.
The husband's back was broken in an accident, It took 6 years to recover. The wife was working a full time job, plus trying to take care of her husband (which, having had to take care of my mother, is a full time job in itself). Their income is less because the husband can't work, so they have to put off fixing things. He can't lift anything, she is exhausted every day, things pile up. I would bet serious money that they were both dealing with untreated depression due to their circumstances. And then their parents pass away, so they have to deal with that, they can't afford storage, the husband can barely lift anything, she is stressed the hell out, so they just stash it in their house. Thinking they will get around to sorting out the garbage and the keepsakes, when they can. They aren't bad people, they just had problems that overwhelmed them, and got out of hand. But when Mike came and offered to simply help them clear out the garbage? They agreed, with no sign of argument or resentment. Criticizing and being derogatory is easy, but it doesn't help anyone.

They're either both hoarders or one is a hoarder and the other is a codependent enabler. No excuse for accumulating mountains of rubbish. Can donate to charity (eg. Salvation Army, Goodwill), have an estate sale, or sell online.
@@ronaldhudson169 yep, most hoarders have a severe anxiety of letting stuff go, either from growing up with nothing, to just having sentimental values. I have been known to hoard computer parts as ive had many times i threw stuff out that i eventually needed again and had to re-buy. (now i just rent a storage unit for all my old computer gear)

A non hoarder would not have stuff stacked from floor to ceiling and that lady 'confessed' in this episode it was time to let some 'memories' live in yr head and time to let go of stuff. solid wood floor beams and plywood and not a sight of OSB or engineered weird. now thats a solidly built house, structurally at least.
