I worked as a handy-man and general contractor for several years after I was laid off from my job as a biology professor. I spent most of my time fixing issues created by so-called professionals. A lot of cut-rate companies (especially those that hire out to sub-contractors) do horrible work. No one will ever care about your home more than you. No one is willing to invest more time on your home than you. Most of the work is pretty simple if you are mechanically inclined and willing to put in the work and research the code. Know your limitations and assess them honestly. If you don't feel comfortable doing something, don't do it. But every homeowner should (at very least) learn some skills so that they are not taken advantage of by contractors.
I try to do my own work, I did my basement, and alot more. Unfortunately the outdoor deck lifted. But I'm pretty good at what I attempt. I was fortunate enough to have worked for my brother, a builder. I learned alot on site. Best work I ever had. 👍

I love rewatching Holmes on Homes when I come across an episode I’ve seen 10 years ago. That said, in the US, it’s been tougher to find his shows - either airing at weird times or not on the channel you’d expect. I’d love to hire him or one of his kids to come do some “basic” work on my house, knowing that it would not only be done right and for a fair price, but they could fix any issues they find that weren’t done right. Just really hard to trust local contractors. A friend was raving about the contractor they hired for their kitchen, and how great a job they were doing - only to be left frustrated when paint colors didn’t match, and trim pieces weren’t completed and they had to call daily, finally to get told off by the contractor (very rudely). With the corrections still needing to be done, they contacted the contractor’s business partner, waited a month, and finally got someone to come fix it. (all of 4 hours of work). And again, this was a contractor my friend was raving about during the project. I had some work done on my house - took 3 months. Was quoted 1-2 days. After confronting the company after the first month about the timeline, they said “Oh, who told you THAT?!”. They disappeared for a week without notice, would show up unprepared at 10:30am, take lunch at noon, then pack up by 2:30pm saying they would be back tomorrow to finish up. This went on for months. After countless calls to the company, they sent a different crew out who said everything was done wrong and proceeded to rip out all the work the first crew did. The second crew was better, but failed city inspection of the work 4x - once simply by not even showing up that day they scheduled the inspector. Another time they asked the inspector if he could point out things they were doing wrong while they were working. Inspector got angry and said not to call him until they were actually completed. My neighbor with the same model house had the same work done a few months later. The company they hired sent a crew of 8 people, and knocked it out in a single day - and passed inspection first go.
If you're looking for old episodes Mike actually has a You Tube channel where the have some of the old stuff and a constant stream of just his show. Usually put it on as background noice when working around the house.
Well I live in the United States and 66 years old. I like watching home repairs. I have call building contractors to see how much it going to cost to put siding on my house. I had only one comes out and look at it and never heard back from him. I don't understand why. It sounds like the contractors in Canada are willing to help the elderly . I know a lot of elderly people don't have the money to fix up their house, but at least the contractors could give them a quote .
I rehab houses...i am fortunate i finally found a good contractor. On avg out of 10 contractors doing bids 4 never show up to the house...3-4 ghost u after the meeting...2-3 actually give a bid. Never pay money up front. If they require it... U need to find a new contractor. Always get everything in writing.
Some building contractors are looking for multiple units type job which would take a team of guys some time to do them all as they would buy material in bulk to say do 6 houses....or the job was bigger than HE COULD DO so he had no clue. Those are the extremes-Not Lots of work or it was too much. You need to keep inquiring and maybe find a contractor who too is nearing retirement age so a job here or there he does...and that is enough for him and his small crew of guys. And he has the necessary scaffolding if it is a high job, etc. He could give you a quote. And you should get 3 quotes and not be "Pressured by any one of them" Quotes are hard to do if it is wood siding as wood has tripled in cost since the start of Covid (for some reason) Personally I believe it is "Speculators on Wall Street" that is pushing up Lumber prices. They do it with oil, wheat, hog futures so wood is just something else. There is a lot of lumber in the sawmills and lumber yards. Personally, I would wait it out, because house prices have gone really high that no one can afford one. It has to crash.
Isn’t he just THE best? He gave such hope for mankind, really, with using his honesty to help others be in safe well thought out homes. He’s one of a kind. Will be grateful always.
I've been watching him since the beginning. Love Mike Holmes. I've met him three times at tool shows. Really down to earth guy. Sincere and open and very nice to everyone around him.
Mike Holmes is SO real... like a hammer. He's instructive and educational... in his own unique way. I glad to hear he and his kids are going to return to TV in the future.
As someone from the UK, I loved watching Mike pick apart bad workmanship, I miss watching this guy tell it how it is and backing it up with court procedings and paying for stuff out of his own pocket, mans a legend. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!
Lol...that is funny, get a Holmes on Homes approved house and watch it get demolished in two years for structural failures....TV can be edited to show you whatever they want.
Wish this video would have lasted a bit longer & slow down the speech of the narrative, kind of hard to understand, sounds like a chipmunk but the story was great. Jus sayn. IMHO
He became a role model, not only for his construction skills but also for his leadership, ethics & focus on quality. He was criticized for questioning the local construction codes, but honestly he was asking valid questions when components prematurely failed or where poorly put together but “passed inspection”. His questioning of the local codes was to raise awareness & to raise the bar to prevent the same issues from happening over & over. I liked his proactive approach rather than being a bystander like other contractors might be
Mike Holmes is a fraud. Currently he has had 13 "Holmes approved homes" in Ontario demolished for numerous structural and material issues. I have a good friend who is also a contractor and once worked with Mike Holmes on a house... When Mike Holmes is being criticised, my friend said he debates and then resorts to saying "Well I'm Mike Holmes, I've built many homes, been on TV, etc.". I've heard he is very egocentric and not as intelligent as he claims
This is the kinda guy who appreciates good sub contractors. Love it when I run into similar GC's on jobs who make it that much easier for you to do quality work correctly. There's nothing more frustrating then arguing with an "off hands" GC about how things should be when all you're trying to do is take care of the customer. Some are just in it for quick cash and others are just in the wrong line of work.
I wonder about Mike’s childhood...how he was raised... My folks always used to say to me...Do it Right the First time..Or...Don’t do it at all... Doing a task over and over got very old very quickly....So...I would make it Right.
Truly enjoyed watching and the aditude do it right. My dad to always built anything stronger then recommended to last beyond the next owners or generation. Just don't take my dad with us to look at funiture, we'd see him shaking the heck out beds, tables to see if they'd last. Sure up set the sales persons. I miss so much he's past away from cancer, but I still hear his wisdom words.
Wish you would come to my home and do the repairs on my home. We’ve been here for 30 years, still have the same issues then that we do now. When it rains we have water in our basement. Why would someone put a concrete slab for a door in the lowest place in yard or put in a breaker box in a home if they knew it was already outdated. No contractor would live in their own build with this kind of shotty work, so why do they think a homeowner would? It is a nice house, but if we knew what we know now, we would have thought twice about buying this house. Most people is this area can’t just pour money into a house in hopes that it’s fixed, they need to know that it’s fixed and safe for their family.
He is more of what the industry needs . Not only skilled set but caring in his work for others. Like mechanic's , dentists in their professions , there’s always a trust issues. Thank you Holmes - you are Loved 🥰
He knows his homes but he really overbuilt a lot of things and I know that was the main thing and he was all about quality but much of what he did is unobtainable for most homeowners and flippers. His repairs are great and they will last longer than the house itself but for the price it takes to do most of them it isn't really worth it unless you are in a really nice home and plan on keeping it for yourself for a long time. I mean the cost difference between what you would have to pay for his work and the way he repaired things and doing it a more cost efficient way is like a 40% difference. I repair my home like he does the homes on the show but that is because I am young and I live in a $750,000 dollar home on the beach and it was $190,000 when my Dad bought it in 2001 plus I rent out a 1br/1ba unit on the sode of the property on air BNB for like $125-$200 a night and it's booked solid all year amd for the next 3 years and has been this way since 2010 when i remodeled ot and started renting on Airbnb so there are like 3 reasons at least for me to do repair correctly and overbuild so to speak. I mean on many of the things he repaired they would last twice as long as the rest of the house. Hahahaha He was very good and knows houses and construction.
I feel like they need to change the name to R&R make it more truthful to their programming. Where there used to be many shows about gardening and home repairs such as Mike Holmes....now it has become more about buying real estate and renovating for HUGE profits. HGTV has lost the vision of helping people to improve what they have and make it suit them better. Most of the time I want to scream at the entitled people that appear on these unrealistic programs.
@@double.d Me too. Used to enjoy 'Room-to-Room' and Paul James (?) The Gardener Guy. Now it seems they have issues with "truth-in-advertising" (lots of fake scenarios and behind the scenes lawsuits).
@@antiquegirl6505 ... Paul James ~ now there was a good guy who knew his stuff ! Yes - truly miss all the older shows prior to current versions - then again - miss everything about the era in general compared to the 'now' - I'd revert back entirely if possible ... really makes u think n wonder how much more arse-backwards can it get !
Holmes is my hero. He has a big following here in Australia as his attitudes and beliefs to quality building practices translate well here. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
I love this guy! I've watched him since his TV debut in the US. This guy may come off as arrogant but he knows what he is talking about and actually Gives A Shit! Something that has been absent from home improvements and contracting since the 1980's! Well done Mike!! Do it once and do it f@#$& right!!
I never thought of him as arrogant. He gets pissed off at shoddy work by people who should know better. For most of us, a house is the most expensive thing we'll ever buy. Our house is a horrible mess because some flippers didn't know what they were doing then sold it to some equally ignorant flippers who then sold it to us. The problems were hidden so the inspector didn't find them or he was equally incompetent. To fix this house would cost over $60-70k and we just don't have the funds. We're going to have to sell it "as is" and hope it's enough to pay off the bank. I have lived here 14 years and all of it has been marred by one thing after another. We fix one thing and three more things break. I can't tell you how many times I've fantasized about paying someone to burn it down while we're on vacation.
Ever have a nightmare where you are trying to sneak through the express checkout, 12 items or less lane with 14 items, only to find out Mike Holmes is the checkout clerk??
How about a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you? No? Why am I the only one who has that dream.......?
Mike used to have an online forums that was very much like the show, homeowners from across North America would log in to get advice on problems they had with their home. I was one of the contributing contractors who gave advice on what I specialized in......basements and structural. Mike Holmes did have some of the best contractors and products on his show but a couple of the things he did fall short on was structural and especially concrete basements. He cancelled his online forums in late 2012.
Do you know that you can speed up or slow down these videos? On my phone, up in the right corner are 3 dots - tap there and pick the speed setting and pick which one you want! Many many videos I actually listen to faster, because most people speak more slowly. :)
@@debbiedogs1 so what ? Why should we have to slow it down. Why can't it just be made at a proper speed where everyone can enjoy the intake of information instead of FORCE FEEDING us all her neutral toned dribble ? If you want it speed up for what ever reason, then that should be your option.
Wow, this was hard to listen to. The female narrator needs to slow down and read much more expressively. It’s not a computer-generated voice, but it may as well be. She never stops and it all sounds the same.
Anyone can do a good job with the best tools, 20 man crew and endless money also someone telling you where to go to work. When you have a budget, half decent tools and someone watching everything you do and wondering if they will pay you... That makes a good contractor also . .
Mike is a local inspiration. I've binge watched his shows on HGTV. Truly an icon of Canadian television. He brings knowledge, art, science and philosophy to his fan base. He even scolds the municipalities for poor regulation of the trades. He should be a politician.
@@whyyeseyec Mike has often said that regulations in home renos have to be standardized and railed against government lack of action. Well it would be a huge opportunity to effect change if he were given the chance. Not all politicians are crooked.
I have watched Homes since he came on tv in USA around 2005? He has great work ethics, kind, demands perfection, smart, really cares about people getting stuck with bad inspectors on homes and poor workmanship. There's more but those who have followed his shows know he sincerely cares about people and loves his family. His intelligence and his gift of visioning a job from it's worst to being the best is awesome. Big HUGS to Mike Holmes and his many gifts...especially his words: "MAKE IT RIGHT"!!! Gods blessings to you Mike Holmes and your family.
I just watched a video where a group of Mike Holmes approved homes were found to be built very badly (by his approved contractor) some were demolished others had hugely expensive repairs. There was no sign of Mike Holmes once he had done his part in selling the new properties.
I grew up with This Old House in the 80's, before it mostly became a commercial. Holmes is a modern version of that iconic show, except Holmes is louder, and I like that.
Slow down talking, your talking to fast for some people to understand what your saying. Your talking like you have 5 minutes to say 15 minutes worth of speech.
Mike Holmes is a true godsend to home owners. at the very least, repeatedly cautioning against shelling out ALL the money BEFORE the final inspection PASSES.
He sure is. Even my Hubby knows I find Mike easy on the eyes. I may be older than Mike but I’m not blind. Ladies, keep your eyes exercised and enjoy the hunky Holmes.
I'm 68 and grew up in the same neighbourhood as Mike Holmes, I remember him coming in to Fish Joy trying to sell his tools so he could pay his rent, he was doing renovations at a house with a shared driveway and the neighbour worked for HGTV, hence his discovery, every word of every episode, of every season was scripted, people think he knows all this stuff ... it's all speaking lines that he was told to say, the magic of television, trust me if you ever talk to Mike you will soon figure out that he's not too bright ... he's a fraud and it's gone to his head
What a great ass kissing video except you haven't covered the topics of multiple homes he was involved be having been reported to be substandard construction and ended up being demolished instead of being fixed with Mikie denying involvement except the CBS episode clearly showed he was deeply involved. Great propaganda piece Comrade!
He needs to buy a large home improvement chain, rename it (Holmes Depot), stock it with great products and have trained contractors in every location who will build your home.
Thanks for the backstory!! Had a chance to meet and talk with Mike Holmes at a construction trade show and was very much impressed with him. Already had a couple of his books and he has great advice on home renovation projects. Have been in construction all my life and just about every time I watch his TV shows or the UA-cam video clips, I either learn something new or re-learn something I had forgotten in working for my late Dad who was a contractor (a quality contractor!!). Best wishes for continued success to Mike Holmes & Company!!
I enjoy watching him but ain't no way i:ll let him work on my house you call him to check your back porch and before he leaves you got a new basement and front driveway new appliances house rewired 🤣🤣🤣🤣

If you're looking for old episodes Mike actually has a You Tube channel where the have some of the old stuff and a constant stream of just his show. Usually put it on as background noice when working around the house.
@@Y3w3lzthank-you!!!
This is one person I would like to meet in person. He seems quite personable
Love MIKE HOMES. Miss not having a channel where I can watch him.
The Higher You Rise the Harder You Fall IF GREED IS YOUR MOTIVE
LOVE Mike Holmes! I learned more about bldg and my own home from Mike Holmes than anyone else. I wish there was a Holmes and Holmes in my town!
I LOVE THIS MAN! He is to e THE IDEA of the PERFECT MALE----miss him and I'd watch a show about wood rotting if Mike was on it!
He doesn't rot wood at code. Code is minimum spec.
It has to crash.
in texas same problem / and no help from govt or fema. oh well . thats in GODs hand .
Isn’t he just THE best? He gave such hope for mankind, really, with using his honesty to help others be in safe well thought out homes. He’s one of a kind. Will be grateful always.
I enjoyed watching all of Mike Holms shows
I've been watching him since the beginning.
Then why are they tearing down his brand new homes, look it up. The guy is a total fraud.
yep that's why the houses he built are now being demolished lol dude's a fraud.
Well, none of this has aged well.
Gotta say the earring needs to go. It looks ridiculous.
I’ve done work in homes done by Holmes and there was clear half assed work done. Which is exactly what we were redoing.
As someone from the UK, I loved watching Mike pick apart bad workmanship, I miss watching this guy tell it how it is and backing it up with court procedings and paying for stuff out of his own pocket, mans a legend. DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!
Lol...that is funny, get a Holmes on Homes approved house and watch it get demolished in two years for structural failures....TV can be edited to show you whatever they want.
guess you haven't heard what happened to his neighbourhood of holmes approved homes in Meford Ontario.....this guy's a scam
I liked his proactive approach rather than being a bystander like other contractors might be
And later found to be the same as everyone he criticize…. Just Google terracewood
Holmes get homesbuilt and approved by him, only to have them demolished in two years for structural failures. The guy is a con.
@deecee2174 I saw the documentary. Holmes has plenty to answer for.
He doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground
Would have listened to the whole thing if could have been able to stand the narrators voice.
That man is a legend!
Sure, you pay 20k for a remodel you get a better job than doing it yourself for 2k, but not everybody has 20k to spare. Don’t hate on diy people .
I'm so glad he's doing well. What a great guy!
Then why are they tearing down his brand new homes, look it up. The guy is a total fraud.
Dianna Cashion - YOU need your own channel, too!

Love Mike Holmes. He is what all contractors should be.
Then why are they tearing down his brand new homes, look it up. The guy is a total fraud.
He is more of what the industry needs . Not only skilled set but caring in his work for others. Like mechanic's , dentists in their professions , there’s always a trust issues.
Thank you Holmes - you are Loved 🥰
I like and trust Mike Holmes. Thanks for making a show about a wonderful Canadian!!! 😷😎😷
He comes in three flavors.
I find Holmes to be a somewhat annoying know it all but there is nobody I would trust more to build or renovate a home for me.
Say what you want - This man knows his business!!!!
Man, you said what I wanted to say!
@@LQOTW What can I say? My last name is "Holmes". It's a "Holmes" thing lol I actually work
in the same field.
Above average at least.
Hahahaha
He was very good and knows houses and construction.
His daughter is thick like him. 😊
so many dropping away from hgtv. I cant help but wonder why the disconent?
I feel like they need to change the name to R&R make it more truthful to their programming. Where there used to be many shows about gardening and home repairs such as Mike Holmes....now it has become more about buying real estate and renovating for HUGE profits. HGTV has lost the vision of helping people to improve what they have and make it suit them better. Most of the time I want to scream at the entitled people that appear on these unrealistic programs.
I miss all of the old shows, hosts and designers
@@double.d Me too. Used to enjoy 'Room-to-Room' and Paul James (?) The Gardener Guy. Now it seems they have issues with "truth-in-advertising" (lots of fake scenarios and behind the scenes lawsuits).

He is everything I expect in a man.
Holmes also is spokesperson for Guildcrest Homes .I used to work for them in Morewood Ontario Canada.
Holmes is a disgusting, lying POS who has fleeced many out of tens of thousands of dollars each. An untrustworthy charlatan.
This man has empathy and a heart. Very rare these days. I watch every thing he is involved in ❤

Oh shite, not going to work this time lol, I don't pull that crap anyway but would love to see that on a reality show.
You are correct, the video here missed some some thing a glossed over others.
I love Mike and his family...God Bless him and his family forever ❤
Love what and crew do." Make it right"
He is a true person and knows his stuff period
I'm a Kiwi guy in NZ, loved the show's and totally respect Mike Holmes! Kind Regards
Love Mike Holmes! Whoever narrated this, needs to slow down. VERY difficult to understand.
Sounds like AI to me
He worked for his success! CONGRATS!
Anyone can do a good job with the best tools, 20 man crew and endless money also someone telling you where to go to work.
When you have a budget, half decent tools and someone watching everything you do and wondering if they will pay you...
That makes a good contractor also .
.
he's had some homes torn down because of poor quality
Love Mike Holmes need more people like him.
Mike is a local inspiration. I've binge watched his shows on HGTV. Truly an icon of Canadian television. He brings knowledge, art, science and philosophy to his fan base. He even scolds the municipalities for poor regulation of the trades. He should be a politician.
Holmes has too much integrity to be a politician.

Big HUGS to Mike Holmes and his many gifts...especially his words: "MAKE IT RIGHT"!!! too bad he went with fox... ultimately controlled by murdoch
If it gets Mike's approval....I'm on board....
He went from well built houses and correcting mickey mouse operations to approving tofu dreg housing projects.
I just watched a video where a group of Mike Holmes approved homes were found to be built very badly (by his approved contractor) some were demolished others had hugely expensive repairs. There was no sign of Mike Holmes once he had done his part in selling the new properties.
MIKE HOLMES IS A FRAUD.
Mike took the money and ran ... to buy more cars for his "collection"
They had to demolish 3 houses that Holmes built
I grew up with This Old House in the 80's, before it mostly became a commercial. Holmes is a modern version of that iconic show, except Holmes is louder, and I like that.
Slow down talking, your talking to fast for some people to understand what your saying. Your talking like you have 5 minutes to say 15 minutes worth of speech.
Don't associate that *"Queen ALizardBreath"* with us Canadians!
We'd ditch her in a heartbeat!

A nice father and his kids.
I watch him all the time I have learned so much from him
Just another channel trying to make a buck off others .
Mike Holmes is a true godsend to home owners. at the very least, repeatedly cautioning against shelling out ALL the money BEFORE the final inspection PASSES.
He's easy on the eyes too!
He sure is. Even my Hubby knows I find Mike easy on the eyes. I may be older than Mike but I’m not blind. Ladies, keep your eyes exercised and enjoy the hunky Holmes.
I always picture myself being hugged by him and making me forget about the crappy relationships I’ve had😂
I am big fan of mike Holme. But he doesn’t do cheap work.
Skilled labor isn’t cheap CHEAP labor isn’t skilled..
If you think he’s expensive, wait until you see how much a cheap inexperienced idiot costs. Quality costs money.

Great man, great family!
I'm over 70 and since can remember, Dad taught me "Do it once, do it right, get on to the next job".
