Can I use spaghum peat moss? Great video and I subscribed. I couldn't get pdf to print or go to my email.
Could you use regular soil without fertilizer?
Also what do you mean by need 30-50 do you put them in that temp or does it happen?
I was thinking about buying one. Think I’ll just stick to my cactus that seems to thrive off neglect. I went a month forgetting to water it and it’s doing great.
😂
They are native to South Carolina too. I played with them along the ditch banks of my grandmother's farm after my dad showed me what they were. They were huge. But don't forget SC, NC always gets credit for everything. They got us beat.😅
You are absolutely correct. I apologize, I'll make sure and correct that going forward. Thank you so much for pointing that out!
My fly trap from Walmart has lived for a year now thanks to your videos! I took them out of the fridge (dormancy) later than I should have so I’m hoping they come out ok now, but I did start with 1 plant, and now have 3. I keep mine under a grow light.
Yes! This is exactly why I do it! That makes me so happy!!
How did they turn out?
@@robertseddon3242 2 didn’t make it, but I’ve still got 1 going strong.
I have done it wrong for about two days before I found this video, I have had it in the sun go for about half an hour to three hours these past couple of days without knowing because my window doesn’t get very much light, I’m glad I found this video though it has been really helpful and I’m hoping that I can keep this plant alive even though I’ve done wrong so far
I'm sure you caught it in time! Good luck!
Good info! Thank you! I purchased a small Venus flytrap and a sundew at a local garden center. They didn't know much about them, and I had always wanted to try them. I will definitely get them out of the kitchen window seal now 🤦🏻♂️
I feel so called out by this video 😂😂😂 thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤ this is what I need.
You and almost EVERYONE else that buys a venus flytrap for the first time. Don't feel bad, they are strange plants!
In San Jose CA, my FIL has kept his VFT healthy in the window for 54 years.
I 100% believe you! But trust me when I say that this is not the norm. If the perfect conditions exist in a window sill, it can work. However, it's a death sentence for the majority of beginner growers. It's awesome that your window sill keeps them going!!
you gave the best educational video, for how to care for these plants, thank you for the time spent on making the videos, for someone like me who was in a panic of thinking i might screw it up but after this my plant is healthy and growing very fast.
I’m getting first Venus flytrap tomorrow thanks for making this video it helped a lot
Woo hoo! I'm so excited for you!!!
Just bought this exact one. This video helped a lot
I appreciate your video. Your knowledge is impressive and you are easy to understand . I have short attention span.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words!
Your welcome. 😊
Your fly traps are ridiculously healthy!
Great video. Really appreciate the links to everything you use. Beautiful plants. I am ready to go to Walmart!
Woo hoo, good luck! Let me know if you have anymore questions!
Thank you so much for the information!!!
I am so excited. Going to get a motherd day venus fly trap. Thsnk you for this info
That is awesome! If I were a mom, that's what I would want to! Happy Mothers day to you!

Thank you Sadie! Appreciate you watching the video and supporting the channel!
Thank you.. I ordered some to sell at work, and they were bought up really fast. Unfortunately, most people probably do not know these things, I did not know either
.very helpful..
Yes, caring for a venus flytrap goes against most common growing knowledge. It's not that hard, just not like most other plants.
thaaaaats nice i just watered it with tap water
Gasps! Now I’m thinking about my porch pond!
Thanks for uploading this

Thank you!
This start of this video had me feelin attacked but its ok, I got high and bought one on amazon so it's different, right? 😅 I'm sorry 😭
this was s helpful
Thank you I just got one as a gift I love it and take it outside Dailey like it’s an animal lol you showed me no tap water thank you I am going to use distilled now and hopefully learn more to let it grow bigger
Right on! Enjoy your new plan... pet! I mean, you can feed it right? That qualifies it as a pet.
I bought my first Venus flytrap from Walmart and I was trying to find information on them then I found you and now it has big traps and it’s really red thank you😁
This is amazing and my number one goal. So happy your flytraps are doing well!
I got a Walmart rescue VFT in February when my local Walmart was finally selling them for spring and not in September. It's a little light starved but it's a quick growing plant! Trying rn to acclimate it and my other CPs to be outside, it was cooler longer than usual. Great vid on this topic, I do agree that we all been there impulse buying amd wondering how to take care of it😂
The impulse buying is great though, it leads us to this amazing hobby! Good job taking your time on acclimation. It can be a tricky process.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I agree. If it wasn't for impulse buying I wouldn't have my Dente VFT that I've also bought this year! Acclimation is tricky, especially where I live, it can be colder longer such as night temps staying under 50 (northeast America). What I usually do is once it stays above 50 I also take my Nepenthes in my garage and they like it, in fact, they grow more pitchers in the garage then in my house.
I'm in the exact same situation right now. Bring my neps in at night as it's around 45 to 50 degrees at night. It also makes watering tricky when it's 80 degrees I'm day then down to 45 at night...
Good fast info. 👌
Thank you!
@Carnivorous Plants Hub The Ace cut was spot on, keep it up.
Ha! I actually took a deep breath before I started recording, it just felt right!
Thanks for your channel. It's hard to find good info.
That's one of the main reasons I started it! Thank you for your kind words!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub You're welcome.
I got one today from Lowe's, they were all in bad shape and I picked the best looking one. Don't know if it'll make it but I hope this video helps!
Good luck!
I've had my venus fly traps growing in a terrarium for three years and they are magnificent always blooming and I've propagated and put more of their stocks in the soil and terrarium and more have grown and they flourished good for the past three years and look amazing
Do you put the flytrap in dormancy? If not, your results are definitely an anomaly. Beginners should steer clear of terrariums. Venus flytraps are not a tropical plant and do not need tropical conditions.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub very useful video
Thank you for the very helpful information. It's greatly appreciated. I do have one question. Can the venus fly trap be potted with succulents?
Going to Lowe’s
Just purchased my first Venus fly trap. I live in Illinois. Should I wait until actual winter before the dormancy period? Where do I get flies to feed them? Thanks
What do you think of the little gel cubes they sell on Amazon for carnivorous plants?
I am going to buy 1 now i live in hot florida i hope it is going to thrive from heat here
VFT impulse buyer over here too! I've had mine on my window sill since February and am using a grow light at the same time. I open the window (weather permitting) as well so that they can get fresh air. They seem to be doing just fine but I'm wondering if combining lighting sources like this may be too harsh on them later on?? I've watched a bunch of your videos and I really appreciate all the help!
Hey Candy! A Window Sill is fine if you are supplementing with a good strong grow light. You can definitely combine the two for great results!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub That's awesome and thank you! I did repot them in carnivorous plant soil about a month ago and they're currently enjoying their little lives... they're like pets lol 🤗💚 Fingers crossed for a great growing season everybody!
This was very full thank you my first time having a venus flying trap
Considering getting one of these. I want it to live, but I’m awful at plant care.
Is a cfl light good enough or do i need a more powerful grow light
I’ve clipped the container of mine to the inside edge of my aquarium. Just the bottom of the pot touches the water til evaporation lowers the level n I refill. Seems to be recovering after tragic treatment described in your vid 😅😮😂
Haha. VFT's are strange plants. There are just so many misconceptions. Glad you have it figured out. Hope they grow big and strong!
Hey so the only soil I have is miracle gro, and its not a super nutrient rich soil its the water control one. Will my Venus fly trap be okay?
Thanks for this! It's very useful.
I live in Orlando, FL - so not much winter here, guess I'll need to refrigerate it during the winter... how long would I need to keep it dorment at those temperatures?
Needs to go dormant for a minimum of 10 weeks, but 12 weeks if you can would be better.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub HI! Uh so 3 questions, my Mom got me 1 as a gift a few days ago and I'm in the same situation as the commenter above, should I just put the plant in the fridge for the rest of the winter orrr. 2 Can I email you to get the plant paper? And 3 where did you get the thermometer looking thing? I have nothing else to check the water 😭
Do you have the spider Venus flytrap? I would like to buy it
Ok so two questions
I have cats and am worried they will touch it and stuff is that dangerous for my cats??
Also can I just collect rain water or get the disluted water or do I have to buy the zero water filter?
Great video! But my venus fly trap is all leaves, no traps. Otherwise, it seems to be doing well under a grow light and is creating offshoots(?). I haven't found anyone describing a condition like that.
8:30 Have been growing flytraps in a window sill for years, no problem. In summer best giving them morning or late afternoon/evenening sun, otherwise place them about a meter from the Window.
I 100% believe you. The problem is, people who have success growing them in window sills are outliers. I have people message me every day that are trying to grow in a window sill and they are completely light starved. When giving care instructions to beginners I always advise against window sills. They are welcome to try it, but it's the easiest way for most to slowly kill their flytrap.
Was just about to ask this. I have a gollum jade in my window that I JUST put my Venus fly trap beside. This gollum jade grows a lot I’ve had it for years - even in the winter and I see new growth - I just like to keep it small and window sill size so I always cut it back. I do have multiple grow lights but I wanted to keep it in my kitchen - now I’m not sure where to put it but I just got it today as a gift so I’ll figure it out
@@kaylacarter6144 Grow lights might be better indoor. 'Problem' when you keep flytrap outdoor is that most traps will be closed because of caught bugs (standing on the ground), got to keep a closer eye on wattering (drought and over wattering) and when you have to bring them indoor for winter best to repot because of living bugs in plant/soil. Also when keeping them outdoors they need to adjust to the light. Build up time outdoor.
Yep. The first plant that I bought at Winco died. I just bought my second and do not want to repeat that experience.
Oh man, sorry about that. Hoping I can help you leep.this one alive!
Hi there, found your video very interesting, I am thinking about growing some Venus Fly Traps. I went to your website to download the tracking sheets and I used 3 different emails since last night and I still haven't received any emails with the tracking sheets :(
Oh no, sometimes that happens. Shoot me an email at cplantshub@gmail.com and I'll reply with the tracker and care sheet!
Tracker download still not working? great video by the way.
Hey Tony, do you have an Instagram? So you can shoot me a message?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I dont
watching this and have no intention of doing this in the next year. 2020's are wild
You should have some intention, vft's are amazing!
Wondering! So the cut-down 2 ltr soda bottle on top of my pot is just for show? Not creating a terrarium evironment for my trap to grow better?
That is correct. Extra humidity is not necessary.
9.5 Inch Self Watering Planter Pot, Plastic Self Watering Flare Flower Pot with Water Reservoir, Deep Planter Pot Container for Garden Indoor Plants Home Decoration, Brown are these good for venus fly trap?
I live in Phoenix and have a tube skylight in my bathroom. Do you think that's enough light? Or would I still need a grow light?
Yes you would need a grow light. I actually did grow mine on a windowsill for many years but I no longer grow anything on a windowsill and wouldn't recommend doing it. Temps there would reach 60c or 140f, I have no idea how anything survived.
I got my second venus fly trap about 2 weeks ago. She is NOT doing good at all. What can i do to save her? My first fly trap did beautifully and lasted a very long time. I dont see this one making it.
What about Spring water. I collect water to drink from a spring on my property and wondering if is would be ok to feed my traps from this source. I’m probably leaning to No but would appreciate a professional answer
That's a great question. Honestly, it's impossible for me to answer though. It all depends on where you live and the mineral count in the ground. You would need a TDS meter to measure thr waters dissolved solids. I go over some of that in this video! ua-cam.com/video/uWXqMW13VXY/v-deo.htmlsi=sJlSOD-ZC1VNXNNz
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks,I’ll just collect rain water to be safe. Iv been killing these for years not knowing I can’t give it tap water or traditional plant food. Iv nm learned so much from ur channel, thanks
Could you put multiple plants in a bigger pot?? I was only think like 2 or 3
You sure can! Check it out. ua-cam.com/video/_wXr_3UBiX4/v-deo.html
does the care sheet work for anyone?
Is it OK to feed ur traps spring water? Or just distilled or rain water?
I think I just answered this in another comment! Let me know if you can't see it.
Do you have spider Venus flytraps? If you do can you maybe let me buy soem
Thanks for calling me out 💀💀 I surely did impulsively buy this
Lol, I think most of us did. And it's okay, I encourage that. As long as you come seeking help, impulsive plant buying is okay!
I have a south east facing window that gets 10-13 hrs of full sun. I keep aloe vera and other sun loving cacti there with great success. Are you saying this still isnt enough sun?
The age of the window could impact the suns power. Typically newer windows are slightly tinted and designed to keep much of the sun out. Older windows don't have much of that. If it's an older window and they are actually getting 12 hours a day of direct sun, that might ne enough. That's just typically not the norm.
My plant is turning black, most of the leaves look like that or with brown spots. Any ideas of what could that be?
Could be a few different things. Likely a water issue or a pest issue. Too much water can lead to crown rot which created a rapid decline. Spots and dead traps can also be pests, like spider mites. Maybe join a group and post a Pic. Sometimes you can help get the issue identified..
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! You are appreciated & 🪰 AF!
Ha! Your comment is awesome!! Love this!
Question: would it be OK to leave the Fly Trap outside on the porch if the night time temperatures dip down? We're in north Idaho and we're going to be going through spring now, so it'll be warmer days hitting in the 70-90 range and dipping down to the mid to low 40's sometimes 30's at night. Will it cause the Trap to go into a dormancy or will it be ok?
Story time: I've gone through like 3 fly traps sadly. I first bought the $6 fly trap from Winco on a whim for my kiddo Grim and they then named it "Hydra".
I bought from Amazon some Kapecute carnivorous plant soil mix that has a 70:30 mix of sphagnum moss debris and perlite and we have a gallon jug of distilled water that was _supposed_ to be for my husbands CPAP but he never uses and gave it to us for the plant. I also got a bottom reservoir plastic pot from Walmart to replant the trap into that'd hold water at the bottom. I also bought a container of small mealworms from petco, this was back in January and the worms that have been kept alive are now HUGE so we have to cut them in half to feed to Hydra.
Hydra 1's traps got eaten by our cat so we got better at keeping him away. Hydra 2 and 3 were put in the bigger plastic pot immediately but because I put 2 in the 1 pot they didn't grow very well. Hydra 2 turned black and died, and after I disposed of the dead one I let the other take over the pot. The left over one didn't seem to grow very well but it might have been in a dormant stage? It had one long flower stalk growing but there weren't any traps left because they turned black and dried up. The whole plant seemed floppy and dead so I cut my losses and tossed it, which resulted in Grim berating me and saying it was probably just dormant.
So now we're onto Hydra 4.0 and I'm here to try and make sure I don't mess it up. Grim was telling me that the trap is a swamp type of plant but I now see they were wrong and I'm going to give them the link to this video so we're on the same page. Thank you for the tips and I hope I don't kill this one this time. Live and Learn I guess, huh?
TL;DR: Have gone through 3 traps and wound up killing them. On Trap #4 and I'm trying to do better.
Hey! Which part of North Idaho? I'm in post falls, I'm very familiar with your weather. I just moved all my flytraps outside with this nice weather that we've been having. They should be fine now. I usually look for overnight temps to stay at 40 or above. Flytraps are hardy though, they can do 30s as long as it stays above freezing. They even survive occasionally freezes. How about the northern lights the other night? Hopefully you were able to go out and see them!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Woah! Small world, me too! We're in the same city! :D Yeah I got out to see the aurora it was absolutely breath taking! I kinda wish that youtube had a DM system oh well.
@amashizaino I'm on Instagram too, if you are @carnivorousplantshub
Where they grow there is natural flowing distilled water in perfect soil I'm confused
In a way yes. In the areas they grow, slow moving ground water has stripped the pine savannahs of any minerals or nutrients. The natural water where they grow natively is also low in natural minerals and nutrients. This combination is actually why they had to evolve to get nutrients from insects. The ground was not providing it.
i got a venus flytrap a few weeks ago and it died yesterday it had a paper with it on how to take care of it but it wasn't specific with sunlight, type of water, or anything like that compared to my venus flytrap and yours mine never opened I got mine off of amazon
Oh no. I'm sorry. Don't let it deter you from getting another!
Can you put different species in same pot?
Different venus flytrap cultivars? If so, yes. They are actually all the same species just with different traits. They, for the most part, all require the same care. It would be fine to put multiple cultivars in one pot!
I’m from the south east of England, there’s never much sun so that’s gonna be a problem. It’s growing it’s Sphag and perlite, and drinking rainwater. I hope it lives.
I'm in North Idaho, we don't get a lot of sun either. Not year round anyway.
I USE THOSE RED PLASTIC DRINK CUPS and DRENCH MY TRAPS WITH DISTILLED WATER TIL THE SOIL DRIES AND THEIR DOING VERY WELL
Oh ya, you can 100% use those!
Nope, neither of those 2 reasons.
I intentionally purchased my traps from death row at Walmart. I just like seeing how others are repotting, what their preferences are for media, and tips!
Right on! Either way, welcome and hopefully you picked something up!
Can you boil the water. An should I report it
No, unfortunately, boiling does not get rid of dissolved solids, just bacteria.
My neighbor gave me a walmart venus flytrap two days ago and it's allready dying, i wish i've seen this video before !
Oh man, hopefully you can save it!
I already entered my name and email, but I am not receiving the sheet.
Hey Eric, shoot me an email at cplantshub@gmail.com, I will reply with care sheet and tracker!
Tap water works just fine when its under 100ppm/tds(mg/L) but ideally should be below 50 along with sufficient draining to flush out excess minerals. Chlorine evaporates from tap water in a day given a large surface area while chloramines require chemical reactions such as ascorbic acid dechlorination to neutralize. Pet stores sell dechlorination solutions to get rid of chlorine and chloramines but make sure the ingredients are safe for cps. Your city should have an annual water quality and treatment reports that has tds/ppm and information on whether they use chlorine or chloramines. Cities that rely on ground water would usually have too high a tds but rain and snow melt runoff water is usually safe. I live in the pacific northwest and my city uses chlorine with water tds at around 20-25 year round and my flytraps/sarrs/darlingtonia have been fine for a decade.
This is exactly why I don't recommend using tap water. The vast majority of people who grab a venus flytrap on a whim at Lowes are not going to contact the city about levels of chlorine in their water. This is why for most people I just suggest to avoid tap water. I'm also in the PNW, my tap comes out about 100 PPM. I do not recommend that, 50 or lower should be used. I'm just trying to help people who are amateurs and casually picked up a vft. The best advice is just to avoid tap all together, too much involved for your average plant owner. Also, the zero water pitcher that I recommended filters out 99% of chlorine. I stick to my claim that the zero water pitcher is 100% the go to tool for watering carnivorous plants.

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub yup totally get your point. People also have totally different preferences with soil mixes and water depending on situation and experience. Thanks for sharing your experince :)
Would fish tank water work (with or without fish like can I use fish to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in a rain water container or use old fish tank water that would likely have fish poop in it) I am also already treating tons of city water to get rid of chlorine, chloramine and hard minerals but I think it still leaves some minerals in if it is not safe should I be worried about how I am storing rainwater (like if the container has metal components or is running off my roof that could pick up nutrients from decommissioning leaves) and for my last question would water from air conditioner dehumidifiers work or do I need to be concerned about what it may have come into contact in the attic (insulation, rusting metal, etc.)
@@williamsutton7 Small minnows should be fine but you should always test the water first and same thing with roof runoff. I wish i could say more but everyone's experience is different. If the water is deemed safe, start with inexpensive plants that you have multiples of first just in case you loose them
What about melted snow water? 🧐
It's probably fine, but I'd want to measure with a tds first.
I have a problem
My Venus Flytrap is not closing some traps still close but some don't
I don't see yellow or black leaf so I think there are healthy
There is still beautiful new growth happening
It's hard to pin down an exact reason for this. It could be not enough light, not enough water, possible over handling. Sometimes flytraps will stop closing if they have been fed too much. Hard to say for sure.
Any idea how long a Venus flytrap can survive without any light at all?
You know? I'm not really sure, never just put one in the dark. Probably a month or so. I've had them lost in the mail for 2 weeks and still survive.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you, I have a Venus fly trap on the way and due to complications with postage it was delayed by a few days and was getting kinda worried.
I thought they’re not supposed to be in terra-cotta pots because of the minerals in the pots
That is correct! Mine are plastic that are colored like Terra cotta.
What about well water?
That entirely depends on your area and how much minerals you have in your ground. To be 100% certain with well water, you would need a TDS meter. I've seen well water measure at 10 and I've seen it measure at 500.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Great information. Thank you for replying.

Bro the people I bought it from said window light was enough and tap water is fine no wonder it's turning black

Over $150 for a grow light? Sad.
What about trader Joe's water
I'm not familiar with trader Joe's water? Is it distilled? If so, it should be fine!
I have given my new one tap water for 2 days. Is he doomed already?
It should be okay. I'd flush it a few times with distilled water. Thay will help flush out the minerals and salts from the Tao water.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub thank you for the reply I didn't expect one!
Off to the garden centre tomorrow to gather supplies
Thanks for the great content
Why so many requirements? how do/did they even grow in the wild without any care? My concern is more with the water, you said they like it from the roots but in the wild they get it from above so that's contradictory to me.
They don't get it from above in the wild, only occasionally when it rains. They live in areas that have a lot of ground water. High parts of boggy pine sevannahs. The areas they grow have had so much water ran through them its stripped the ground of its nutrients. There is a reason they only grow natively in one specific place in the entire world. You need the right conditions. The conditions I talk about in the video are as close to possible as the conditions they thrive on in the wild.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub That makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate you taking the time to clarify my doubts. I took for granted that there would be a "regular" amount of downpour where they grow.
I am from Costa Rica and we're in rainy season here, I got one today and put it outside so I will bring it back in and just take it out to get sunlight before it starts raining otherwise I feel it would be way too much water.
They grow along the ditch banks in hot, humid SC summers. We used to play there and trigger the traps. They grow in poor nutrient soil in boggy areas. Then they die off in winter and come back in summer.
