Nice, Nice, and sweet! 09:58 "Elephant in the Room" LoL. So much fun to have you both. Ken, he did get a little wild when you were not there. Happy Sailing ⛵
The chain plates were glassed in. So all the corrosion is behind fiberglass that needs to be cut out. What about the mast step? if there is moisture in the sole, how is the mast step?
Nice big boat. The chain plate issue will be a deal killer for a lot of people. You have to wonder what IP was thinking to glass the chain plates into the hull, particularly since their integrity depends on welds. If you want the boat to look good you will also have to budget in $20K or so for a paint job unless you have the DIY skills and a place to paint it yourself. As far as the interior goes, I am not a big fan of pullman style berths since the inboard person has to get up if the outboard person needs to get out of the berth.
Definitely a special buyer for this one. The chainplate setup is absurd; a bummer these boats were built this way. I guess the good news with the Pullman is that you have the aft cabin too. With my snoring, my wife and I would be in separate quarters anyway! Ha. As always, thanks for chiming in!
This one should be snapped up quickly, she is a perfect choice for a bluewater cruising couple. I would love her, she looks like she'd be splendid to live aboard, but she's just a little too much boat for me to consider singlehanding. In my opinion, having external chainplates installed would be the ideal fix, certainly better (and much, much, cheaper) than digging out the existing ones!
I love IP and this is a nice looking boat, but by the time you paint it, new cabin sole, new chain plates, new main it won't be feeling like such a great deal. And it won't be long until that diesel has over 5K hours on it, that's getting up there! Personally I would rather pay a little more and get one that had these issues addressed already. I also am not a fan of crawling over my wife in bed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Thanks for the tour.
I have the same problem on my cabin sole. I believe it is from bilge water and moisture from the underside causing staining. I redid my sole and in 2 years the stains were back.
I've always been a bit of an IP fan ... they are just so damn well designed -- no wasted space and the space that they have is maximized in innovative ways. I'm glad you guys found this one and got a chance to tour it -- you both seemed genuinely impressed with the layout -- you should try some of the larger models -- amazing use of space!
I passionately dislike Island Packets. I like the build quality, but the performance is disastrously awful. They are too fat, too heavy, to shallow, have a rig thats too small and have a keel and rudder that was designed about the same time as a steam engine. They are motorsailors
It's in a wierd spot. Between the chainplates, paint, and likely sails you're into it for $90k. Then it's a nice weekend/week local cruiser. Lotsa boats do the weekend cruiser thing. To bring it to world cruiser standard it needs solar, davits, and maybe a repower. That's another chunk of change. After you're done you can find one all kitted out.
A point to note and an easy fix is that the propeller nuts are on the in the wrong order. The thin one goes on first. It seems counter intuitive but that's how they should be.
Great find you guys. I love that all ports are opening...My one minor negative comment is, what is with the companionway ladder? It looks like it is just varnished...a slippery slope for sure. I have nonskid on mine, and still, my granddaughter slipped and fell into the cabin. The staining of the cabin sole ...I remarked on that below..
My buddy moved his to the outside using bronze. He claimed it is the better option. Carnivore menu for your best health. Watch Doctor Shawn Baker and Doctor Ken Berry.
I've heard a few people say they don't do good in heavy weather, but I don't see how bad it could be on such a heavy boat with a full keel. I would like to be on one to see how they really do. I've always thought they are better looking boats than Benetaue and Jeanneau.
With that keel, rudder, excess beam and inefficient rig they don't sail very well in any weather, but probably are least deficient in higher winds. Windward performance is poor in any wind conditions, but under 15 knots is hopeless. They are motorsailors.
Exactly what I was thinking. Could cabin sole damage be from flooded bilge? The bilge they showed was obviously cleaned with what you can reach but you can obviously see darkness extending under inaccessible sections. Price is nice. Wonder if each bathroom has it's own through hulls? Swap both to composting, rip out tanks and hoses and close off through hulls. Pain in the arse.
You’d be surprised at how many bilges we find filled with water and the boat is on the hard… The cabin sole was the way it is now 17 years ago when they bought the boat. Not an active issue.
IP are excellent in general, but … but maybe not that one! This two guys are trying to upsell this vessel?!? Price requested seems to be a great deal until you are realizing too many wrong things. This two car sales dude are not sending me good vibes. Discarding the water damage and adding they don’t know the reason of the problem made me suspicious. Chainplate and rigging are not laughing matters. I bet by the time you repair this vessel, you will quickly reach a minimum 50 to 60k on top of the $65,000. Plus the boat is old ( 37 years ) and like anything, vintage things break easily. Not a good things unless you have some extra money to restore this vessel. Any people with good sense will pass on the “good deal”.
The marine survey that was completed for the new buyer would disagree with your assessment. And, subsequently, she sold. If we don’t know the answer to something we’re not going to make it up, which is precisely why everyone buying a boat should get a survey from an accredited professional marine surveyor. We didn’t laugh about the chainplates; we got information straight from Mack Yacht Services on the process of repairing them. I’d say that’s taking it pretty darn seriously. But, alas, the boat sold to a very happy new owner - so I guess we did a good job!
I’m gonna get out and sell. I’m working on the old fatty knees right now and I’m gonna put her out on Lake Roosevelt this coming weekend that’s Arizona Lake Roosevelt, but I’m from California West Coast sailor and you know what they say. Any boat will do if you just wanna get out on the water, that was a beautiful boat thank you very much. Can’t talk to wife into getting a boat and taking off leaving this madness behind. I’m working on her.
We’ve had our fatty niece since 82 somewhere of 82 and she’s in great shape sales everything good shape. She’s a fun little sailboat dinghy used to be for the big boat no longer have the big boat.
Boat is an antique. If you are boat shopping in this price range do not consider this floating dumpster. You can get a much better and newer boat for 65k

Yay Canadian Ken! Yay, both of you. The IP38 is one I've wanted to learn more about. Thanks so much for this review. Great job guys!
Glad you enjoyed it! Lovely boat! I thought CK was going to sell everything and buy it for himself!
Such a nice boat. Fun watching Ken get giddy about the layout. Sheesh 65k are you kidding me. A new Catalina 31 is 300k +. Great deal :)
Yeah, it’s a nice one. CK was definitely fired up about her!

Glad to be back!
The chain plates were glassed in. So all the corrosion is behind fiberglass that needs to be cut out. What about the mast step? if there is moisture in the sole, how is the mast step?
Mast step was pristine (the part we could see - the mast is in).
when i talked to island packet, they had mentioned that 98 and up had the newer stainless steel chainplates.
Correct.
Glad it all came together! I knew you'd like this boat and Stockton Harbor is a hidden gem of Pen Bay,
Thanks for the hot tip! And, yes, Stockton Harbor is a hidden gem. Plan to stopover there next summer while cruising. Very pretty!
@@boatfools Glad it all worked out so well! Win-win. Hopefully I'll see you guys up there, the Ericson 28-2 next to the IP is my boat.
Someone got a bargain. That was a good buy.
100%!

Great job guys! What's the source of the water damage on the cabin sole though?
Not really sure… BUT, a friend of ours ended up buying her so I’m sure we’ll get to the source! Thanks for the comment and for watching.

what's up with the huge water stain on main cabin port side floor? Hatch leak? or something more nefarious?
I have the same problem on my cabin sole. I believe it is from bilge water and moisture from the underside causing staining. I redid my sole and in 2 years the stains were back.
Probably why all the new hatches😅
@@pamcollinswhite9360 No. I have an IP. Most likely the jib track bolts.
Definitely could be...

Sorry!
...and they don't know what's causing it - red flag

Thanks! Yes, companionways are danger zones. I put strips of non-skid on ours. Definitely helps and it should be added to this companionway as well.
My buddy moved his to the outside using bronze. He claimed it is the better option.

Agreed on looks. I find it hard to imagine they don’t handle heavy weather well….maybe it was the sailor and not the boat?!?
With that keel, rudder, excess beam and inefficient rig they don't sail very well in any weather, but probably are least deficient in higher winds. Windward performance is poor in any wind conditions, but under 15 knots is hopeless. They are motorsailors.
Dammit nice!!
We do our best to find the cool, fun, and nice ones!
I love the Island Packet!
She is sweet!
I hate Island Packets. I prefer sailing boats.
A rare find, an Island Packet you might be able to make money on if you do the work yourself.
Idea for the DIY sailor, for sure!
Mmmmm. Chain plates.
Good looking boat but it ain't special to have a dry bilge when on the hard!

@@ananda_miaoyin we appreciate that compliment. Those two are irreplaceable, though... Was thinking about adding a stuffed dog. :)
@@boatfools Sea Dog. One of a kind. Maybe try a cat??
can you liveaboard at that location?
In the boatyard, on the hard? I do not believe it is setup for this, in terms of year round water options. It would be a pain, and very cold…
I had a friend do his and he said he'd never do it again. You need to remove all furniture.
I would definitely go with having external chainplates installed, no way I 'd start ripping the interior apart to dig the existing ones out.
I guess the good news is that they should never have to do it again…but, it’s not a simple task, for sure.
How to oversell this is how.
Ken snuck across the border!
Give him a green card!
Chainplate are cheap. Wait till you have to replace the engine. I had my IP29 repowered. It was $30K all in.
Ouch. That's a lot...
25 K FOR CHAIN PLATE REPLACEMENT....
Island packets don't last wery long.
