What an amazing couple that built, maintain, modify and sail a truly beautiful and capable vessel. At 56 I wish I'd had the opportunity to do something similar but in '98 my special needs son was born. Needless to say that changed the wife and I's lives forever as he requires 24/7 supervised care that we provide as there's no other option. I mean there are homes of course but I'd never do that to my son as he's more than happy with us and depends on us for everything. Without my wife's loving care he'd not last long just sitting or lying in a room alone and we simply refuse to do that to him. There is a silver lining as mentally he's from 6 to 10 depending on subject and Christmas as well as all the holidays are a very special time for him. Sorry for going off on a tangent there and thank you for showing this couple and their amazing accomplishments on your channel... To them, fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless. God Bless...

@mjrburn. Your story breaks my heart, you are wonderful and very loving parents. I am 78 have had a great life, enjoying my work and hobbies including owning a number of sailing boats, hang gliding for 23 years, now riding a very nice motorbike and loving it. I have two fantastic sons who have done extremely well in life and given me four Grandchildren between them. My eldest son is taking me to London and Europe this May for three weeks flying first class and even though I am financially well off he will not let me pay for anything on the trip To give back I volunteer one or two days a week at Sailability Bayside in Brisbane as a skipper on small sailing boats. We sail with mentally and physically disabled people young and old. Some of our passengers can communicate a little and some cannot communicate at all. I see the love and care given by their parents and care givers. It gives me pleasure to brighten their lives just a little, and it has made me appreciate my and my family’s good health. I have the utmost respect for parents in your position who sacrifice everything for their loved ones and I am grateful that I can help enhance the lives of those not so fortunate. Best wishes and love to you wonderful people. Q
I was listening and the Australian accent through me off a little, but I was thinking they might be Dutch? (I’m Canadian with Dutch parents). Then I checked the comments and saw the Opa and Oma comment… Great couple and video!
This is Bill from the boat Amargosa, I'm on the same dock as they are. They actually have to walk past my boat every day to get to theirs and always make it a point to say hello. I can tell you from chatting with them over time, that they are every bit the sweet hearts they appear to be in this video. I just happened to come across this while looking for something else, but it really is a great story. So happy I found it.
l am in my early 60's and I've been feeling washed up these days. Mostly having that '60s label on me. In their 80s and still going strong. It renewed my attitude and my compass towards the future of how I'm going to finish the race. I own a 38' sailboat and I hope I can take that journey that they're about to take. I enjoyed this video and thank the people that made it!
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt message. Fair winds on your wonderful adventure ahead ❣️from Sam & Rene, this couple inspired us to buy our 31ft 48 Year Old Swedish Sailboat. 😊
I'm 10 years younger than you, and also feel the label society puts on you after a certain age. I'm making plans to start my life as a live aboard as well. However, I would never attempt to build a boat like this amazing structure or even have the know how, of where to even begin. I would sink to the bottom of the ocean lol. A video like this gives me the fuel to follow my dreams, regardless of my age. Good luck on your new adventure!
I just turned 69 years old. I owned three yachts in the last 25 years. Now I am boatless in Phoenix, Arizona and being retired without a boat I am going nuts [slowly]. Henk took the words right out of my mouth. I truly believe that Adam and Eve were RETIRED IN Paradise and where going nuts with be bored. Adam said to Eve... give that apple... I want to hunt for my food. The rest is history!!! Nice Video!
I’ve been a live aboard for 25 years. I have not been able to travel like they have. I’m envious of that. I can’t imagine ever living back on land. I’m in my 70’s now and I guess I’ll live out my live on my 44 foot Searay cruiser.
Henk and Lucy are a lovely couple with a beautiful story. i am 68 and just bought a used 1200CC motorcycle. i haven't ridden in decades. i took the MSF course, 3 days in the rain, got my license and bought this bike online. it was in new york and i am in chicago. been riding most days and with winter coming i will park it for 3 months or so. we have done our fair share of soul searching since leaving our jobs a very few years ago. for the first year, i was in awe of the fact i was free to use my energy for my own interests. we spend most of our time at home and do very little. we are perfectly happy living like we do. most people seem to think they have to stay on the run all the time but we definitely do not see it that way. virtually no travel or socializing. we went for an overnight over halloween and went on a ghost hunting excursion. we were exhausted by all the hassles that we encountered. we were not surprised by them, we just find them taxing, tedious and unnecessary. we do breathwork, meditation, tai chi and maybe yoga around noon each day. maybe 45 minutes total. we sleep in as late as we can. we don't eat until 3 or 4 pm each day. i would say it is a very simple satisfying life and it suits us fine.
The first hurdle was the completion of their "home-built" ship. The percentage of home-made boats that actually see the sea, is frightfully small. Two thumbs-up for that!
Wow!! Uncle Henk and Aunt Lucy that was so very cool to see you featured on this show. I have wonderful memories of staying with you on the Gentle Lady and I pray you guys have a wonderful and safe trip! We miss you and love you heaps!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Henk & Lucy have my utmost respect. Imagine building a boat when most of people are retired and still sailing the world when most are just pottering around their homes with their grandchildren. What an inspiration.
Im 4 years in as a liveabord now. I aspire to be like these folks. Im in 30 mph wind on a mooring ball in Maui, wishing the weather were better, and enjoying the experience 😊. 5 years ago, had you have told me "Youll be in hawaii fixing up your sailboat and preparing to live out your dream.". Thank you Hank and Lucy for your insight....I've been sailing for only about 16 years, just shorter coastal sailing while still in the work world, but just retired in the last 4 years, and wondered, at 65, if I was overestimating my abilities and underestimating the difficulty of commencing more extensive cruising, just taking off and not coming back, even considering a much bigger boat at this age. Your age and encouragement and experience has convinced me to just go for it...I always feel my best while living on the boat, always love Life the deepest on the boat, so thank you again for helping me cast off the anchor of my second-thoughts ! ❤

I am really touched by this episode, a simple and down to earth couple that do unusual things for their retirement. Can tell their love for each other is immense.
"An achievement" is something of an understatement. I have had boats and fixed them, but this is huge. Not many things impress me, but this is great. Thanks. I am 10 years younger and struggle to keep busy like these people, anyway I have learned a little. Thanks.
Nice. I have been a liveaboard for more than 6 years now. Based out of a marina in Singapore, not too far from Pangkor in Malaysia. I do everything on my boat myself and looking at this steel boat I am impressed how Henk and Lucy have been able to keep it so well maintained. Do not underestimate the amount of work it takes to keep your boat in a seaworthy condition. This is a home that can sink. It is a choice of course and it does takes a high level of commitiment and courage to be living on a boat. I wish both Henk and Lucy all the very best of luck in their future undertaking. Thank you for showing us your home.

I hope you have been keeping a journal for your kids and grandchildren. It was 20 minutes of enjoyment I’m so glad I didn’t miss. Grand kids are a joy…it’s hard not to see being around for them …but …With computers now it makes it easier to stay in touch while still living your dream and not falling into a hole. All the best. Wishes for Smooth sailing and nothing but good seas and fair winds.
Henk & Lucy were my marina neighbours in Geraldton West Australia, we last caught up with them in late 2000 in Darwin, we headed over the top & they went overseas, they have such a positive outlook on life & are a fantastic couple, I wish them well in their travels.
I chose work and my girlfriend in 1995 rather than a life delivering boats around the world I love what you have done and my brother now lives in Mandurah Ive sailed from the UK to Gran Canaria and dream of doing more sailing (although my wife is ill and hates the water) Hats of to the two of you for living my dream
What a wonderful story. So inspiring. I sail on Lake Ontario on my C&C 30, which is a far cry from what you do and have done, but the spirit is the same and it keeps me going.
You two are truly an inspiration to me. I've worked extremely hard my whole life and dreamed of living on the water in some capacity. Unfortunately my folks had a few years of needing some care and i moved home to take care of them. Well, long story short, both have gone home to share eternal life with our heavenly father. Im now under contract for my first boat. I be moving back to Florida within a month to start my life over, and living out my dreams with my daughters and Grandchildren. Im 55 yrs old and some have told me im nuts and should buying a home on the golf course. Well, that makes sense for most, but not me. I downloaded this and will be sending it to them. 😁 Thank you again for sharing and take care of yourselves. Ill have you in my prayers regularly if you don't mind. ❤️
What a lovely message for Henk and Lucy to read. We will pass it to them. Really happy to hear how so many are inspired by their story and chasing their dream regardless of age. We also bought our sailboat becoz of Henk N Lucy. (we're 50 yrs old n people think we're nuts too) God Bless.
God bless you and keep you safe. Hope to be retired a year and a half from now and want to live as the two of you are living. My biggest worry is not being around my adult daughters if they need us and if they ever have children not being around them. You have inspired me with the fact that you are still doing this and you are in your 80s. Hearing you say that this is what you need to do to fulfill your lives means more to me than you may know. I’ve got to get my head around the fact that it is OK for me to do what I need to do without feeling guilty for “abandoning” my single adult children. ( daughters , 30 and 31). Any words of wisdom or encouragement will be appreciated. My wife and I have a 12 M Catalac that we plan on living/sailing on.
Hello Max, Henk and Lucy are on their boat in Pangkor Marina, we will send this msg from you to them and try and get in touch to see if they can send you some words of encouragement. Thank you for watching this video we made of their story. They are truly a lovely couple.

I LOVE YOU TWO GUYS ,YOUR ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC BRUTAL HUMAN COUPLE. the others weep of what they cant be ................
Amazing story. So much gentle wisdom to be found with this lovely couple. How great to have a sense of their story and wouldn't it be fun to meet them.
Amazing! I traveled the BVI in a 46 foot Harding sailboat, and a 75 foot wooden sail boat name Bagheera. Also lived in a 28 foot sailboat in Key West, Fl.
How did you find living on a 28 footer? I'm in the process of planning my journey into a live aboard lifestyle. Doing my research, reading sailing forums , and looking through want ads for sailboats. It's an overwhelming task. Would you recommend outboard, or inboard engines? Helm, or tiller? There is advice from both camps. I'm looking for a 27 footer, maybe 30 at the most. Are there many differences in maintenance, repairs, or marina docking prices in boat size? I apologize for the many questions and thank you immensely.
I am very grateful to you for this interview🙏. I have fallen in love with them: brave, intelligent and sensitive 💜. (Sometimes UA-cam does not notify me of notifications from your channel and others, I am late then ...sorry). A big huge lovely Sam and Renè.
What the Mr said about retirement . About working your whole live then retirement comes and you fall into a whole. That’s me. I’m in a deep whole and can’t seem to get out. I spend days in my house while my wife works. Life is so dull . I’m so glad this cool couple found a passion.
Sailing keeps you young! We race against a 95 year old each week and he still wins more than we do. Our crew average age is over 70, except Wednesdays, when we all revert to teenagers again.
What an amazing and inspirational couple. God bless them and keep them safe on this remarkable journey that they are on 🙏.. I am truly in awe of their spirit
Wow These two are living the life I am trying to get my husband to do . He is working hard now and I am sure he will enjoy this life style . God bless you both x

So inspiring! I’m in Perth and trying to get my wife to come and sail the world with me. This couple is amazing, I hope I accomplish half of what they have accomplished. Mad respect. ❤️
Absolutely. That's why we chose them to feature on our channel. Their story just needs to get out there for everyone of us who want to sail but are holding back.
What a great story, we are two years in as full time live aboard on a Catamran. We are currently in the Bahamas and headed for Grenada. Thanks so much for sharing
What an admirable adventurous couple! These two have the courage to follow their hearts, and live their golden years doing something most of us couldn't! What an example of the human potential! Stay safe and happy, and thanks for the encouragement❤
I want to live into my 80’s and do exactly what they’re doing enjoying they’re golden years man they are such a beautiful couple living life the way life was meant free ❤
This comment is belated, but I just came across your video of this gentle facinating couple. Its inspiring to see both of these people giving so much good vibes to others. True explorer's living life to the fullest. God speed, fair winds, & of course happy and safe sailing always.
Thank u you for the video! What an amazing story! Look at them! They are in amazing shape! She crawled into those cubbies like a young teenager. Wow! 30 years ! What an adventure! This is so inspiring, made me tear up! Im in the process of, and in the early stages of planning my live aboard life on a sailboat. Gave me great inspiration to see them accomplish this. If they can follow and live their dream of sailing in their 80's. Me, in my 50's, can do it as well. However, i will never have the expertise to build my own boat. ( They are truly amazing!) They have a great philosophy of life. They don't want to sit around waiting to die, they are truly living to the fullest! Proof that an active lifestyle keeps you young, fit, stimulated, and functioning. If you read this, thank you for the great advice. Stay safe out there!❤
We're glad Henk and Lucy's story is so meaningful to you and it's true, we met them in person and they are very fit mentally and physically for their age. Everyday they are together getting things done. Wish you all the best with your sailing adventures ahead. We are in the same boat as you, getting started at 50.
Hank reminds me of my grandfather Bira on the way that he kept updating with technology and the redundancy of equipment just because they like it and want to be safe 😄. As a young sailor aspiring to live my life sailing the world, I want to keep my engine room and boat up to their standards.
Inspirational couple I am 25 years younger and see barriers everywhere not to do this ,but we are all wired differently. I’ve retired and have a sailboat but feel I have no future or purpose any more. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Beautiful couple, she reminds me of my grandmother, calm, patient happy to explain things and visit. He is so smart, the engine says it all! wish them both much happiness ❤ He's right about "falling into a hole " I Love them. such Good Energy from them!
Great video. Your living my dream. Thank you and enjoy your time and each other. Your boat sounds absolutely incredible with all the right things done. Only difference I would have done would have installed a desalination system with filters for clean drinking water, showering, n cooking. You two are the best and I wish you so much joy and memories! My most sincere Regards, Myk
You have done a wonderful job on your boat . I myself am very claustrophobic so stooping down to get through passage ways would make me very uncomfortable. You built this boat in your late 40’s , early 50’s and still floating 30 years later. Long may you both sail and be happy.
WHAT A TRULY BEAUTIFUL COUPLE..GOD BLESS YOU AND PROTECT YOU ON YOUR FABULOUS JOURNEY YOU'RE ABOUT TO TAKE TOGETHER ON THE GENTLE LADY ABSOLUTELY AWESOME MUCH RESPECT TO YOU MATE YOU TWO ARE GOING TO FIND JOB
Wow, what an amazing couple and what an incredible life they lead. I can imagine the stories they have to tell. Long may it continue. Best of luck to the both of you.

That's just so amazing to know their marina neighbour from 20+ years ago has stumbled upon this video. ❤️
I chose work and my girlfriend in 1995 rather than a life delivering boats around the world I love what you have done and my brother now lives in Mandurah
Ive sailed from the UK to Gran Canaria and dream of doing more sailing (although my wife is ill and hates the water)
Hats of to the two of you for living my dream
Fair winds Hank and Lucy. You are such an inspiration! Live your best life
How clever this fellow and his lovely wife must be to build a boat like this. Amazing.
Very inspiring. We are both in our seventies and have no plans to stop sailing either.
How did you learn ,do you need to be in it from younger ages?..
Fellow Aussies here In our early sixties and want to start sailing. You’re the inspiration!
They’re both so adventurous and youthful. May they have many more happy years sailing! God bless!
What a wonderful story. So inspiring. I sail on Lake Ontario on my C&C 30, which is a far cry from what you do and have done, but the spirit is the same and it keeps me going.
Absolutely amazing couple. Wishing you a long life, and success accomplishing your goals.
You are a baby at 55 - go for it! ❤
@@ljjackson7106 Golf is boring. :)
This couple are beyond most others comprehensive eyes n mind , i have the utter respect for life of these two. Normal its common for guys to build a yatch dream but very sadly failed dreams, but this two guys ,omg i cant believe this video!!!!! So i fee human power love for them . I LOVE YOU TWO GUYS ,YOUR ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC BRUTAL HUMAN COUPLE. the others weep of what they cant be ................
Absolutely you're words exactly. This couple are amazing and we were lucky to meet them. Their incredible story resonates with so many people.
Amazing story. So much gentle wisdom to be found with this lovely couple. How great to have a sense of their story and wouldn't it be fun to meet them.
What an amazing couple. Inspiring and an incredible pair. Hats off to them 🫡
What a lovely couple. I was a bit worried to see how much his hand was shaking but he looks as fit as a fiddle. Good for them.
🙂
As a fellow craftsman I can say that is a talented couple. Lovely job on the boat.
Hi there, excellent presentation. I’m 67 and flat out saving to buy a yacht and sail away. Thanks again.
👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing! I traveled the BVI in a 46 foot Harding sailboat, and a 75 foot wooden sail boat name Bagheera. Also lived in a 28 foot sailboat in Key West, Fl.
75 foot! 😲
@@waltervega8730 28 feet inside is super small - go bigger if possible. Smallest I would go would prob be 45 or 72 feet. Good luck.
@@amandacurtis8374 thank you for the reply and advice
How wonderful! You two have inspired thousands of people by now. Yours are two lives well-lived.
I am very grateful to you for this interview🙏. I have fallen in love with them: brave, intelligent and sensitive 💜. (Sometimes UA-cam does not notify me of notifications from your channel and others, I am late then ...sorry). A big huge lovely Sam and Renè.
Did you click the notification bell? Thank you for watching and your welcome for this wonderful story.
Living the dream and thebest of luck in your travels . Traveling jack
What an inspirational story. Life is for living! She's obviously maintained lovingly and fastidiously. Thanks for sharing.
Henk and Lucy will love your comment. 😊
What the Mr said about retirement . About working your whole live then retirement comes and you fall into a whole.
That’s me. I’m in a deep whole and can’t seem to get out. I spend days in my house while my wife works. Life is so dull .
I’m so glad this cool couple found a passion.
Thank you for inspiring the world to sail their dreams! May you continue to be blessed in sailing the blue seas!
Hello how are you doing?
Sailing keeps you young! We race against a 95 year old each week and he still wins more than we do. Our crew average age is over 70, except Wednesdays, when we all revert to teenagers again.
We love Wednesdays! 😂😂😂
What an amazing and inspirational couple. God bless them and keep them safe on this remarkable journey that they are on 🙏.. I am truly in awe of their spirit
Yes they're amazing. 💗☺️
"What we're going to do with the rest of our life?".. That! really touched me, I'm almost reaching at that point. Sigh!
Stay positive 😊 keep chasing your dream.
What an amazing couple❣️So many clever tricks implemented, then I saw Hanks hobby/workshop..onboard yet!!
Yes Henk can fix anything. Really mean it when we say anything!! And Lucy can sew anything and she keeps the boat immaculately clean. ☺️
I hope these people live 30 more years on that boat...
Life is about the stories you create with others and these 2 people have done it right..
Inspirational. I'm 69, and too easy to become sedentary if not motivated. Thank you for the jump start.
Fabulous. What a inspiration they are. Life doesn’t end at retirement 👍
AMAZING VIDEO. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Happy to hear that! ❤️
Wow These two are living the life I am trying to get my husband to do . He is working hard now and I am sure he will enjoy this life style . God bless you both x
Get him to watch this video 🙂
Wow! Cheers to you both for having the courage to live your dreams!! All the best to you in health and life from Canada 🇨🇦.
I must say you keep a very well maintained and equipped yacht. I hope you have many more not too exciting adventures.
Oh my, a life very well lived. Congratulations to both of you. You're inspirational.
Thank you for lovely wish, you are such an amazing couple..Ahoy!
What a wonderful, loveable elderly couple they are! Thanks for making this interview and video. I wish them all the best in their journeys.
Most welcome so glad so many people are enjoying it.
God bless u guys, u inspired me! John 3:16🙏
What a great retirement story! They seem like a nice LDS couple.
I have to ask... What's LDS?
@@24hourtravellers They're members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint... Latter Day Saints - LDS. They've got pictures and books on their boat that remind me of going to my grandparents house as a kid.
I am admired so much of these young couple guys, as a retired ocean going master. It is like unbelievable living 30 years on a boat. It is amazing. I wish healty life and calm water, safety sailing to you. Already wish you merry christmas and happy a new year !.
All the best ❤️
What an admirable adventurous couple! These two have the courage to follow their hearts, and live their golden years doing something most of us couldn't!
What an example of the human potential!
Stay safe and happy, and thanks for the encouragement❤
Henk and Lucy, we love you. You are both an inspiration to us. Love Joe and Jill
Henk and Lucy will definitely be reading these comments. 💗
Thank you for the comment 😊 will pass the msg onto Henk & Lucy
@@24hourtravellers thank you so much! Yes I can't wait! Good luck to you as well! Thank you once again for the video content.
what an amazing couple !! talented, determined..living life by their rules...
Well done to both the lovely couple who have been doing this for so long, and to the UA-cam couple who is starting on this journey 👍.
I'm terrified of the sea but OMG I feel soooo 'kindly and humbly" jealous... 🌺🌺🌺 Fair and following winds..
impressive in many ways... I am not sure, if I am more fascinated about the boat or the people.. I think, this couple is really outstanding
Same here.
Hank reminds me of my grandfather Bira on the way that he kept updating with technology and the redundancy of equipment just because they like it and want to be safe 😄. As a young sailor aspiring to live my life sailing the world, I want to keep my engine room and boat up to their standards.
Yeah their engine room is immaculate! Inspired us to keep up to standard too. All the best. Thx for watching this video.
Holy, they built it and customized alot of stuff too make them happy and comfy.
Pretty amazing.
What beautiful people. What a beautiful love of life and companionship.
Impressive! Just keeping a steel vessel that size in good order is quite a challenge! Let alone building it!
What an inspiration these two are. Wish I could have started earlier.
80+ years young. Congratulations on a life spent doing it your way! Take a bow(pun intended), not many could have pulled this off as well as you have.
Inspirational couple I am 25 years younger and see barriers everywhere not to do this ,but we are all wired differently. I’ve retired and have a sailboat but feel I have no future or purpose any more. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Hi John, sorry to hear you feel that way. Hopefully the barriers you see will lessen.
What an amazing achievement and in really good condition 👏
What an inspiring couple! This is how to live !!! Xxx
Greetings!
Thank you for making and sharing this video of a life lessons.
Best of luck to all of you too!
Fair winds following seas!
Peace
Welcome 😊
Absolutely plenty of room for storage. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely amazing people ..!! Henk and Lucy are such an inspiration .. Thank you so much for this video ..!!
Our pleasure!
Thx for watching
Sharing the moments of life, glad to found a wonderful couple with their story.
We hope their story sends a special message for all of us to learn ☺️
Good for you both! You are living many peoples dreams including mine. Best of luck to both of you
Thank you for sharing your story. God bless you for choosing to do the things that make you happy. Safe travels, you guys are looking terrific!
No wonder this couple is so vital. Plezier is a Dutch word for fun. Their name has a vintage spelling. Nice familiy name.
Thank you so much Sam for bringing this inspirational episode. All the best to this amazing couple. Kind regards to Rene.
Welcome Zul happy you found inspiration in this story, special couple.
Never a truer word spoken I know how they feel and good luck and good sailing😊🇦🇺
Amazing! Expat watching from Costa Rica. 🏖 mThey give me inspiration at 65, to pursuit my sailing dream!
All the best. ❤️
The boat is as impressive as the couple who built it! Awesome!
Unbelievable! This guys are really a great example! Wish you both the best!! Fair winds
Amazing story. The commitment to build this beauty... love your zest for life...not just get old and wait to time to pass, but making The most of your time to live a grand life
What a sweet couple. Thank you for sharing their story with us.
Most welcome. We have another story coming from here. South African man named Bill Robinson, has a really good story to tell.
Wonderful video and two beautiful people. I enjoyed watching every minute!
These folks are an inspiration and I too will be sailing around in a steel Ketch rigged boat 35ft at 66 years single handed as far as it goes today.
That's great! 😊
