Nothing like quarter sawn white oak! The medullary rays are a sight to behold. It is slow, tedious sawing, but the end result is always worth the trouble. Nice job. White oak trees are abundant in Indiana, but no doug firs!
Thanks Doug. I wanted custom lumber too, so that is another reason I bought my sawmill. The first log I put on the saw was Cherry. I quarter sawed it into some beautiful lumber. Big $$$ for quarter saw lumber.
This is why I like the super easy WM way to quarter up a log. No splitting the pith, no clearance issues and easy to flip off the slabs :D But great video and work!

Looks great....I was thinking...you could stand each board up beside the section with the bark edge down and saw off an inch, getting rid of the bark and a little sapwood at the same time.

Turned out some beautiful lumber. I went in an old Country Store awhile back and they had quarter sawn Spalted Oak ship lap horizontally, on the interior walls.

I've got a 30 inch white oak I want to quarter saw. I've been putting it off because I have a manual mill. Taking the cut from the bottom will make it about 6% easier. Great video!

I have several red oaks to saw and will try this method of quartersawing. I think you can add 2 more side supports as it’s an inexpensive option ($175) when you order a mill. It helps greatly to keep logs on the mill. I’ll look at my mill to see if it’s a bolt on installation. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks.

I think that is the best way to quarter saw wood. I haven't gotten a mill yet but I believe what you have will work for me! Are you still using the 747 blades? You do a great job with your video's! Do you send your blades back to Wood-Mizer to be sharpened? Near where I live I met a guy who gives sawmill demos on his old LT15. I think Wood-Mizer compensates him because I had to fill out some paper work. He had me saw a pine log into 1 inch boards and when I was done he gave me the boards! I really enjoyed that day and he calls me once in a while to see if I have bought a mill yet. I started wanting the LT 15GO then the LT 15 wide and now the LT 35 like yours. I started looking at the LT 40 wide cut but I've seen what you can do and I don't think I need more than the LT 35. Keep up the good work!
I wish I had a 40 wide but it was a stretch to afford the 35. Had I known how much money I’d earn with it, I’d have started with the 40. I’ve never had any blades sharpened but I have a pile of them to take in. Wood-Mizer is only about a 45 minute drive for me.
@@NorthwestSawyer From what I've seen you could use the LT40 wide. Where I live and on my property I'm looking at 24" trees mostly oaks. The guy that demoed his saw with me buys his blades from Wood-Mizer and sends the dull blades back in the same box. They clean, inspect ,sharpen and ship them back at a reasonable price. When you say you have a pile of blades it must be massive! I feel a big part of having a sawmill is knowing where and how the blades are going to get sharpened. From watching you and others it seems blades get dull fast, even if you don't hit something hidden in the log. I was thinking about setting up to sharpen my own blades but that can be expensive and time consuming. I definitely would start by buying Wood-Mizer blades and sending them back to be sharpened. The nearest Wood-Mizer is 5 hours away from me!

I'm impressed at the amount of lumber your John Deere can hold. We have a slightly smaller model about 35hp I think. It gets tippy quick! Good looking boards!

Go out and wash your truck, camper or tractor. Then start to wax the one you washed. The rain will show up.
You used a good technique making the cuts at the bottom of the logs. When doing it this way, logs stay very stable. Good job, congrats.

The problem I have with 1/4 sawing this way is of course trying to hold the log, but also the most of the wood comes out narrow.
I’ve found that this method, leaving a live edge, allows you to get the most out of the quarter sawing process.
