So far, I’m happiest with this among all your videos. I love the use of imagination to solve unusual problems. I’ve wanted to see burls sawn too. I wonder why nobody ever saws veneer? If that burl was mine I wouldn’t even pause one minute; veneer it would be. I saw veneer on my shop bandsaw, but I don’t have a sawmill, so I’m just doing small stuff. Wood like that is just begging to be sawn into veneer.
Thank you, Paul. I don’t think this burl would have been stable enough to be sawn into veneer. With the way the grain swirls, I think it would just fall apart.
Great job working with challenging pieces of wood. In the right hands there is so much potential in the raw material you have made. Hopefully as the owner creates pieces you will have the opportunity to share photos with us. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! It sounds like he has some ideas for knife and gun handles as well as pen blanks. I’ll keep in touch with him and try to share some of his finished projects.
Northwest Sawyer be very careful! It’s hard not to catch the turning bug! And it eats cash and and huge amount last of time. But it’s super fun. I’ve got a few videos up on a turning channel Kennett B turned.
The shape of that burl is deceiving because it is so narrow in many places, but the shapes you ended up with are amazing. I'd use them for hallway tables so they can be utilized as is, with just a couple coats of clear on there to make it pop a little. Could you ask your customer or friend we could see the projects complete....it would be great to see what came of those pieces.
Always happy to wake up to one of your videos. That is some beautiful wood, would love to try turning pen out of that, may have to search for some. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍👍👍. ⭐️
Gaston Cannon hey buddy, I’ve got 15 acres of timber we are gonna have logged as soon as the ground dries out enough to get equipment in but there are several maples and oaks back there with burls and what should be some birds eye maple and if you give me an idea on how you want it cut I will milk it up for ya and send it and maybe you could make me a couple pens in exchange or I’m open to whatever. I’ve always wanted to get into pen turning but time is going by too fast now and don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance so I’ll just pass the lumber off to someone that can do something great with it. Let me know if your interested and we will get the details and shipping add confirmed. Take care Gaston!
I liked this video, and then I unliked it just so I could like it again. The stuff you could make out of that lumber would be really amazing. Thanks for posting this, Jason! Awesome.
Man, those burl's are going to be really interesting to work with! The design possibilities are almost endless,...even that 'guitar' shape. I sure hope that those guys bring ( at least ) some of them to you when done so we may all see . That's for this video, this was really interesting!
Look at that awsome effect when you cut it. ITs something totaly different then a normal iece of wood. I realy like it. I think you can make great pieces of art with that!
Loving the new intro! If you are worried about adding moisture to something like that but want to still see the grain, use denatured alcohol, that's what I do. I love what you get out of burls but I've spent hours just working on the setup and deciding how I want to cut them in the past, it can be pretty brutal lol.
I was also bummed at the start that it all went to slabs but holy, cool slabs! It would be great to see what your client does with them. I'd love to see the grains and spalting in the finished wood.
Yeah, that's some cool looking Burl! The size of that ball is just amazing. I really likes the blade shot towards the end. It look like everything below was moving and not the blade! Great vid, brother!
Nice job on the burls. I really hate setting up for projects like this, but the end result usually makes it worth the effort. I'm finally working on the new sawmill shed!
Lmao....as soon as you looked at that piece and then picked it up I thought the same thing.......a freakin guitar.....lmao......way cool bud......have a great weekend........ :)
Hi Jason! You reminded me that I've got some Doug Fir burls that I drug out of the woods some time back. I don't know if you can chuck them up, but I'll dig them out and maybe we can figure out something to do with them... Cool vid...
@@NorthwestSawyer yes sir I know where you coming from that is what I've done with my upgrades as well I can't wait until you start building your shop I have miss seeing your videos I hope all is well
Everything is very well over here, thank you. My shop may be on hold for a moment. My wife and I had an opportunity to buy a vacation rental on the Oregon coast last month and we couldn’t pass it up. I will, however, have lots of video opportunities making furnishings for our new place. It’s looking to be very profitable so my shop shouldn’t be too far off.
Also, I subbed. I miss having access to a mill for cutting lumber. I'm down in Florida now, about to remove a couple cedars that have some good ol' growth and would make some nice posts for a porch and some rough sawn planks.
@@NorthwestSawyer yup. Its definitely one of those things you gotta do to fully understand. When fell a tree, process it, mill it and build something that is useful and beautiful, you start to understand. I try to embrace the life of the tree that way. It completes the circle through purpose I guess.
Along with that, I’ve been able to work on projects where a building was demoed, I took beams from that building and milled it into wood to display in the new building for years to come.
Interesting music choice. Too many times we make assumptions about little things like a person's choice in music that turns out to be totally wrong. I like it when I'm wrong like that. Nice looking burls slabs. Stuff like this really makes me want to shut down what is have going and buy a mill. Or build a Matt Cremona type mill. Diesel power though. Thanks for sharing what you do.
I actually went through every royalty-free song I had and that was the best I could come up with...😬 sometimes I wish I could compose my own. I bought my first mill as a hobby but quickly found out it was going to be more than that. If you’re at all interested in it, I can’t recommend it more!
I would have suggested to the owner that they cut about 5-6" off the "top" in one cut. That piece would make a nice bowl. Then your sides would be flatter? straighter? for slabs with another bowl for finishing. Wood turners will pay good $ for those pieces. It all came out beautiful. Great job.
I do not own a sawmill nor have I ever owned one but I'm going to guess that you might need a new blade. I'm just guesstimating as I am uneducated in sawmill knowledge. The cut looked a little rough to me although they do not call it rough cut for nothing but that seems excessive. Am I Rome in my assumption? It was easier than expected because you have the right tools. That is an awesome looking sawmill and out of all of the pages I've subscribed to there are like 4 of the people I subscribe to have sawmills. Yours is by far the best. Nice machine good choice. I guess that comes with your edumacation : D
Thank you, Todd. The reason the cut may have looked so rough is the type of wood being sawn. A burl has the grain pattern running in every direction, unlike a normal log where you are only sawing against the grain. It really wasn’t too rough and it took minimal effort to sand it smooth. This wood was also very dry which tends to exaggerate the saw marks. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel and thank you for the comment.
Really cool burls! Thank you for the videos, was going to send the boy scouts out looking for you because we haven't seen any new videos in awhile! lol Great air guitar!
It's ok Jason family, work and sleep I'm sure are getting in the way....lol You're doing a great job with the videos. Lots of snow here in Michigan and bitter cold is giving us cabin fever! Looks like your shop survived the big snow fall

I have loved wood in a uncanny way, knowing fairly young that was what I really wanted to do. I know that at age eleven I tried to get a job in the woods for a man who cut cedar shakes and skidded the timber by what ever means to try to remove. After a long period of time he hired me to fire me thing and from then on he begged me to come with him. My step dad and him never saw eye to eye and it hurt my relationship for work bad, real bad. In fact enough to make me challenge my dad... my dad stood six foot seven, and weighed three seventy five, not one once of fat. He tagged me a few times but I remembered "Aesop's Fables" and I took the giant down and earned his respect. I was twelve I think when that happened.... I'm 72 now and my step dad was about or close to forty. Logging or milling being in my blood for that long would make you think that I should of got tired of it but I would take a job like that now if I could. Only mistake you made on that is cutting all the wood without checking for rot or unpleasant marks that you may of turned the log in proper fashion. I wouldn't call those burls as the would doesn't have the grains that twist and roll to make unique designs like some table tops or veneered guitar tops. Actually if I tried to list the ways I have seen wood used then I would need months of time and a very different crowd of people to want to listen to blithering. I like your videos. Always count on good camera work. I hate a lot of panning so quick that my eyes try involuntarily causing upset stomach and a host of things. I don't know why when you watch a video that the editor of the video will play a mile long prelog and then crash in with loud music. Even if I have watched that channel for a long time, I unsubscribe right then and there. I am too old for loud vulgar rap or just bad sound tracking. Next convention you go to spread the word that many viewers really just don't care for that. UA-cam is the new free tv for the public as subscribed channels on tv are way off the charts with costs per month and repeats. I got to quit writing books for response but it helps me personalize the channel. I get feed back from someone and I feel better about myself. Yes I wish that youtube in some form had been around the fifties. Each generation gets further apart from the last... sorry.... I will jump now, I did like this and have been a subscriber for a while now so your doing something right

Northwest Sawyer I mentioned the idea of a review a few months ago, but you hadn’t used the tractor very much. My Dad and I just bought a 4052r cab unit.
It never fails to amaze me at the imagination and creativity of our Heavenly Father. Who would ever think to create a living process which would produce a maple burl? Thank you for the reminder. R
Its tree cancer.... and consequently usually ends up killing the branch or in some casses the tree. (Not true for every species, just the majority.) So your imaginary friend is kinda twisted.
It's also really cool when a piece of that comes out resembling a guitar!! Thank You God, for the humor you gives us as well and we pray for the non-believers.
It's such a easy cop out to attribute the power and beauty of nature to a sky fairy. Fire and lava shoots up from the earth....must be the volcano god. Lightning crackles through the sky.... must be the lightning god. Billions of light years of expanding space....must be a god. Do yourself a favor and study science and nature and thank your fictional god that humans long ago didn't buy into the lazy arrogant notion of a god and studied and experimented. Otherwise you'd still be living in mud huts killing, raping and torturing each other over which god was stronger and the most realist lol. Just study!! You know what, study other religions and see the similarities. They all have magic tricks, theirs is always the one true god, they all are invisible and unfalsifiable ( it means that you can't prove that they aren't there like bigfoot and garden gnomes) , you aren't allowed to question them, require faith, that science always proves that their god is the real god, they all require faith and a special person to tell interpret the real meanings of their holy books..... the countless murder, rape and torture all in the name of every religion including Christianity!! It's disgusting!!
Well, as you could see, my shop survived the previous forecast. 20” of snow ended up being 4” of rain. It’s still cold and we got about 2” of snow over night.
I know this may read a touch illogical, but those burls remind me of cancerous growths and give me a creeps, am I the only person that feels like this?

Next convention you go to spread the word that many viewers really just don't care for that. UA-cam is the new free tv for the public as subscribed channels on tv are way off the charts with costs per month and repeats. I got to quit writing books for response but it helps me personalize the channel. I get feed back from someone and I feel better about myself. Yes I wish that youtube in some form had been around the fifties. Each generation gets further apart from the last... sorry.... I will jump now, I did like this and have been a subscriber for a while now so your doing something right
Morgan, you write what you want to write. Your comment shows you’re truly thinking about what you’re sharing. Mindless comments are a dime for ten dozen on here. I appreciate the time you took to speak your mind and I appreciate you watching. Your comments are always welcome.
@@NorthwestSawyer Thank you so much, I just moved you to my favorites! I like having a extended family/kinda sorta if you read me. Thanks again
Did you ever get the chance to mill up any ironwood?if so how is it on the blades.
I’ve never even heard of iron wood?
brian walter iron wood “Ostrya virginiana “. Also known as Hop Hornbeam

That's some wonky wood
And then some!😉
maybe some future Jag dashboards coming up...
bro that not bad with me that is treasure

Pretty stuff
Why not paint thinner instead of water?
good job
Very creative way you mill that
You should have a guitar made
like the camera angels
Thank you, Doug. It’s a pain but it sure helps keep things interesting.
Great video! 👍 Is the tractor review soon?
That’s a good idea, Daniel. I have about 65 hours on it now.
Northwest Sawyer I mentioned the idea of a review a few months ago, but you hadn’t used the tractor very much. My Dad and I just bought a 4052r cab unit.
I’m wishing I had a cab now😬
Northwest Sawyer I will say that the open station would make it a lot easier to use in the woods.
Northwest Sawyer If you ever decided you want to change tractor to a cab, don’t get the 2019. It looks absolutely terrible.
What causes a burl to form on a tree?
From what I’ve read, typically it can be bugs or some sort of injury to the tree that’s messes with its growth hormones causing crazy growths.
@@NorthwestSawyer thanks for the info, always wondered what caused that.
Looks like a thunder egg
It never fails to amaze me at the imagination and creativity of our Heavenly Father. Who would ever think to create a living process which would produce a maple burl? Thank you for the reminder. R
Amen.
How did the weather treat you?
Well, as you could see, my shop survived the previous forecast. 20” of snow ended up being 4” of rain. It’s still cold and we got about 2” of snow over night.
I'm in love with the back round where are u from
Estacada, Oregon.
@@NorthwestSawyer I new it lol I took a trip going through Oregon we stood in port orford and ending in fork washington it was so beautiful there
I do love it here.
Мастер, красавчик,и оборудование хорошое, учи русский.😊😃😊👔
I know this may read a touch illogical, but those burls remind me of cancerous growths and give me a creeps, am I the only person that feels like this?
