Sawmill Used: Wood-Mizer LT40W Hyd
www.woodmizer.com
Nathan Elliott owns and operates Out of the Woods Forestry a Sawmill, Kiln and woodworking business. OTW is located in the Appalachian Mountain range of Northeast Tennessee. Nathan operates a Wood-Mizer sawmill used in conjunction with other tools to harvest timber from local woodlands and urban environments.
My Dad was a Sawyer. He cut porch decking from Yellow Pine that was from fallen timber in our State Forest. He cut all "edge grain" for his Dad's home. There were 400 grains in a 4-inch board. These trees were very old and very large. I remember seeing this wood on my Grandpa's porch. It was all milled, dried, and plained as center match at our mill. Wish I still had the mill.
Good evening Nathan,
Beautiful quarter sawn boards. Truly, worth the extra money.
I'm glad your father is joining you. This is great for both of you! May the LORD bless you as you spend time with him.
It is amazing how the simple things can bring joy if you will let them, even if it is pumping fuel! Excellent video and learned something new.
Thanks buddy
Nothing better than removing little constant irritations from the shop
I'm with you there, brother, with the struggle of holding up gas cans the older we get!
Mighty nice to be able to make your own true 2x4''s and 2x6's. Quality lumber that will last. Great to hear your dad will be coming to be a part of the expanding operations. He will enjoy the time with you.
Thanks 👍
Nice to see you laughing and smiling Nathan!
I had to rerun that a few times because I'd been waiting a long time to actually see it!!!
Love it when my favorite sawyer posts a new video. Love that you teach others your craft. Hope your having a great week.
Thank you! You too!
I had never seen that before. It’s really awesome. Thanks Nathan👍👍👍❤️
Quarter sawing red oak makes it look like a totally different wood. Just gorgeous.
It does!
You may want to put a cork in the end of the fuel line. I pumped a dirt dobber into my tank on my Massey and had a heck of a time trying to figure out what was going on. It would run for a little after blowing air back up thru the fuel lines then would act like it was running out of fuel. Really appreciate your videos.
Thanks appreciate the advice
It's always a pleasure to see QS oak. And to hear the process explained by a fella who sounds like us. 😅 Good video, thank you.
Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing this! Excited to see your dad join you on some of your work too! Take care, Nathan!
Nice boards. Clearer than mud on cutting technique! Love it! By the way i bet that tractor cab is nice!!
The right tool is always a pleasure to use even (especially) for simple jobs like filling a fuel tank. I'm smiling with you!
Yes! Thank you!
I love quarter sawed boards I want to make a oak table out of it. For my new place in Idaho.
That sure makes refuelling easier for you Nathan it will also help reduce contamination of the machine tanks with sawdust. Did you the best time to refuel with diesel is when you finish in the evening it eliminates condensation in your tanks!!
I'm learning a lot from your channel with my Wood-Mizer LT35 here around Fayetteville, NC. Keep up the informative videos, you are a pleasure to watch and learn from.
It is funny how the simplest of things put a smile in our hearts. Stay safe
Informative and interesting. Don’t have a mill, but leaned something new with this video.
Nathan, I'm a new member to your channel, And you already have me hooked. Mark and Eddie up in Pittsburgh at Bus Motor Productions turned me on to your channel, And you haven't disappointed. We recently Re-Decked a 50 ton RGN 4 axle with 10/4 Oak planks. As you well know these type of trailers get used and abused and the decking just doesn't last. Due to all the extremely HEAVY equipment with a lot of weight concentrated in such a small area. So going with the extra .5" (2.5") we hope this might help get a little more life out of this deck. Btw, the 4th deck thats been on this 2014 Trailer. Yes, She gets used a LOT. But to replace this trailer today You're looking North of $70,000.00. And others than a little bit of welding and adding a few new cross members that where cracked. She's still straight and goes to work everyday. Now sporting a new red oak deck. 🇺🇲🍻🍹🇺🇲
Breathtakingly beautiful. Thank you.
Great video, Nathan....very instructive. I don't own a sawmill so there isn't much chance I'd ever use the knowledge you impart here -sawmilling - but I never stop learning. As for the t-shirt, I've actually been holding off for the Out of The Woods "Beard" shirt. I couldn't buy one when you ran them the last time. I hope they join portfolio again! Thanks for the video! All the very best!
It's no wonder that cabinetmaker's like Stickily used quarter sawn oak in the Arts and Crafts movement. So beautiful Nathan! I built some Arts & Craft pieces in the past for folks and some trim in houses of the period. Perhaps you know how they used to place the furniture in a room with ammonia, which reacted with the tannins in the wood and darkened it to a pleasant black brown. I made a frame, stapled plastic for sides and placed bowls of ammonia inside and sealed it up. Turned out lovely! Thanks Kindly Nathan and Blessings to your Family! Looking forward to your Dad as well! DaveyJO in Pa.
Absolutely beautiful lumber!
You gave me a great idea for my manual mill. A couple 4x4 blocks cut to a 45 bevel maybe 4-6" long should hold my cant against the log stops so I'll be able to clamp the cant. Can't wait to try that.
yes would work for mine also,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I am an idea guy. 😁
Excellent instructional and the music is an added bonus!
Thanks 👍👍
Thank you Professor! Great class❣️ You are living my dream!!! Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
I like to make my pallets from old furniture!!
Thanks for the instructions
I love to learn something new
Great add to the Farm
It’s the small things in life that makes everything just a little bit better
Looking forward to the "Pallet" making segment you talked about showing us. I make allot
of boards that are 12'-14' long and finding pallets is difficult and I never get the pallets back!
yes sir tomorrow if the weather holds up,
Thank you for explaining quarter sawn lumber. I have often heard of it and never fully understood it
Thanks for watching
Thanks Nathan, I learned a lot about the quarter sawn difference.
Previously I've seen Oak, some with the medulary rays and some without, wondered the reason. Now I know! And can appreciate the extra work that goes into quarter sawn, definitely makes it worth the money!
Thanks buddy
Really quite a fascinating process.
Nice going to have to try that out on the LX25
👍👍👍
Secrets revealed shows the hidden things of what it takes for success in business. thanks.
Oftentimes the simplest things in life are the most deeply satisfying.
Nice results from the small quarter .
That's real gentleman fueling.
That would make a good looking floor
Beautiful stuff! I know I already have a t-shirt on my Christmas list! 👍
Thanks buddy
Did Nathan Smile? Looking forward to seeing your Dad get on board. Production is going to increase.. while having a lot of fun too.
Nice...... Ever run into any "Birds Eye Maple"?
Drain the hose back into the tank filler and cover the end with something.....🤠
Best Wishes Nathan.
Little things make a fellow enjoy throwing his legs over the bed every morning. You were using way to big of words for this Virginia Hill billy, but enjoyed hearing a Tennessee vol saying them. Have a great day. 🇺🇸
"Clear as mud" yep....lol...look forward to your dad on the channel. I bet he is going to like your tractor....lol..
Watching the fill-neck flex when you put the nozzle into it, caused me to realize that you're going to have a BIG Mess when the fuel tank has finally had enough of the stress. I'd build/install a support bracket under the neck to prevent a disaster down the road. The material that the fuel tank is made from, is pretty tough stuff, but eventually, it will fracture from the stress of supporting the weight of the fuel hose and nozzle.
Excellent video
Thanks buddy
I was hoping you'd show quarter-sawing. Thanks
thanks for watching,
You have every right to be grinning about improving your shop. Anything you can do to make your work easier is an investment that pays off over and over.
Are those triangular pieces of red oak going to the burn pile, or will you try to use them as some kind of corner brace on a future project?
That was amazing video. Please do more and teach different techniques or terms even.
Thanks! Will do!
Clear as mud...got it.
😎👍
00:24 That's what they mean when they say "work smarter, not harder"!!👊👍😊
Cherry, Cherry, Cherry! Just kiddin' I'm patient.
hey Nate great video. Hope you don't mind me making a suggestion. In stead of trying to balance the wood for quarter sawing, why don't you make a jig on a 45 degree angle so you can just set the Cant in it. The way you do it, your Cant will always be at a 45degree angle. Just a suggestion bud. I defiantly learn a lot from you videos, keep up the good work. congrats on the over 100k
yeah good idea, appreciate it
THANKS Nathan for doing the Shout Out For Mark Galicic and "T.H.E. Eddie Horvath" @ Bus Motor Productions... You really helped them jump in subscribers and they deserve same! ;-)
Any time! well deserved,
How'd you know I was looking for videos today to explain how to quarter-saw wood?
Hey Carl, glad I could help buddy!
Thank you - in my opinion, you provide the best explanations on the various cuts. So - is your new diesel pump/crank better than your keyless entry and remote start tractor?
What part of Tennessee are you located? I live in Knoxville.
Kingsport
Could you run those on your 4 way molder for table tops? Or would straight edges be better. I so enjoy your channel
Chad must be dense because he's watching all these fancy cutting videos but all he can figure out how to do is cut the bark off then cut whatever presents itself. Usually a couple 2x12, couple 2x8 and the rest in 2x4. Some day he will be all like reverse quarter milling all the quarters.
Enough about that. I love your machine mate. Proper gear right there
Two questions, one, how do you finish a board for flooring? Can you demonstrate an end grain? Two, do you ever sell 3XT t-shirts? I'm a big boy and I need a big long shirt.
When I trained people on the different woods and such - I told people that QS looked like stretch marks
It does! 😅 I won't be able to unsee that now.
@@LogHewer 😂😂😂😂
Did you say that the piece of oak was sigogglin? If so, that’s one of my favorite southern expressions
👍👍
That is....Fantastic never seen that before....That hard blade is to.....Thanks Nathan.....!....Yes l am like comment below me the Cat's are gone.....Don't guess you are Cat poor anymore lol lol .....
Good video. When you measure up your board feet, do you include the sapwood? Thanks, Steve
Yes 👍👍
Did your "boss" aprove of the purchase of the tank and accessories? LOL
The tank must be one of those, "I wish I'd done thats sooner!" moments. I wonder why they don't make more electric sawmills? Electric motors have a ton of torque. I'd think less maintenance as well.
Pumping the diesel, you looked like a caveman staring at his first fire! Very nice boards!
Lol
Hi Nathan, is there any chance the new T shirt company can send some across the Pond to your fans in the UK ? I for one would be happy to pay the postage so i could show off your logo T’s here in Scotland🙏🏼 I already order Shooting gear from Cabelas, Bass pro etc. so there should be no problem.👍🏼🏴
yes they say they will ship worldwide,
Good deal on the fuel tank bud.i have a 215 gallon barrel 9foot up on legs so it's free flow down to my Kubotas.i would like to know what that monster cost you.i don't want to contact them.
No doubt awesome 😎
Thanks ✌️
Does anyone know the type of instrument used in the beginning of this video. I think it’s a banjo.
I’m still holding out hope for pallets
After a blade breaks in 2 can it be welded back & sharpened
maybe,
$6 for quarter sawn white oak? I moving to TN, It's $10 in NC....... So is that the price you get or is that the customer price? Obviously the lumber yard has to make a profit. Have you ever made a video talking about resale pricing? I'm interested in learning what the mark up is from the sawmill to different lumberyards. And any information or advise you have concerning purchasing exotics would be nice to learn about. I'm assuming that lumber from outside the US is sized before leaving it's origin. Some of the pricing on exotics has become insanely high.
What is the stack of lumber in the back round?
Previous milling!!
So Nathan do you think the diesel was worth the extra money?
all day,
•💟•
Thank you so much for this explanation and visual.
I have been wondering about these kinds of details.
I appreciate your educational and generous demeanor.
•💟•
Why don’t you make a bracket so you can hang the hose end for diesel so it sticks straight up so it won’t drip, also see about finding a cap to fit over the end. Just saying.
$5.50/bf for QS oak? You're killing me Nathan...5/4 QS white oak costs me $9.90/bf up here in NY. If I could get it for $5.50 I'd never leave the workshop ;)
wow sounds like I need to take some to NY lol, never seen it that high before,
Just checked a price here in UK - 6 X 1 rough sawn QS Oak is £18.33/metre (in UK we 'mix' our measurement systems - imperial one way, metric the other !!! ) this would equate to about £11 per bf = $14.50 and then20% purchase tax so to private individual - $17.50 bf.
You know that in 6 months you will fit an electric pump !!
You live on a farm Nathan...can you qualify for farm diesel purchases??? I think cats count as a herd animal...LOL
yes all the diesel is tax exempt! red dye diesel,
I see a few people using the Stihl cordless blowers, but I have to say that is the ugliest piece of equipment I have ever seen.
less talk more cut
Tangental plane...ray plane.......dude, I'm from NC. I don't understand that stuff😂😂
lol, come up for a hands on explanation lol,
How exciting... I was thumbs up# 69! Guess I will never grow up.
👍
Simple Pleasures are THE BEST
Agreed 👍👍👍
Your thumbs up counter isn't working.
I should have been #268
Know exactly how you feel, used tofill a skid steer with 5 gallon cans, had to back the machine up to the back of the truck and stand in the bed. Trading work for access to a pump with a neighbor was such a luxury!
You don't seem to have any cats... a knifemaker or gunstock guy would love to have those oddball oak mini-slab-ettes & triangles
1:45 Look real close back there on the pile...Momma cat prowling!
Two thoughts, well three or four. That's some beautifully quarter sawn oak. That edger will make short work of cleaning up those edges. And Third, could you take those triangular strips, joint the fresh faces and glue them together and make some excellent leg stock? With the glue lines right up the corners, no one would notice. And congrats on your Dad coming on board. If you got your work ethic from him he will be a real asset and you could use the help.
Yea, your explanation was about as clear as mud !!!!
Earliest I've caught one of your videos!! Love your work!
Appreciate it
i ABSOLUTELY love your channel!!! new subscriber...what are your thoughts on Alaskan saw mill? i’m new to this and wanted to start out small...i live in the city and am currently having 15 oak trees cut down in my yard as they are starting to become a hazard...
I have never ran a chainsaw mill but it looks like a good place to start, thanks for watching,
Pharaoh, I'm Alaskan out of Anchorage. I use a DeWalt 60V. Oh mill, I go to Lowe's or Home Depot for milled lumber. This is much easier and safer. I've seen a video on UA-cam of the Alaskan Saw Mill, not my cup of tea. Have a good day! I enjoy your channel OTW keep up the good work.
I used an Alaskan mill to cut a few extra beams for my timber framed house out of spruce logs (around 12-16 inch diameter). I used Stihl MS261 with 3/8P Stihl ripping chain (10 degree tooth) on an 18 inch bar. I can tell you right now that even with these small softwood logs, it was hard and time-consuming work, and the saw was close to its limit. For oak, I'm sure you'd need a considerably bigger saw.
It's satisfying to make lumber like this and handy in certain situations, but at scale, I would say it's not worth the time and expense. Consider renting a bandsaw mill with operator if you think the lumber is worth it.
@@Tiiru. thanks for the reply...i told myself if it difficult, then i will just purchase a mobile bandsaw...i bought a Husqvarna 460 rancher, so, we will see, lol...it’s really difficult to find a bandsaw operator willing to come to me as they all are more than 3 hours away and don’t want to take the trip...what’s funny is, i’ve offered top dollar...oh well, i’m on vacation this week so i get to play with my toys, lol...thanks again
3:22 I just love hearing a natural "si-goggling" or however it's spelt.
👍👍👍
I graded hard wood 25 years. 45 to 90 degrees is quartered. Never ever graded rift sawed.
👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks for sharing Nathan, good information and good wood!
My new bumper sticker, I'd rather be saw milling!
