The cruiser USS Princeton hit it with yet another Harpoon missile, and an American SH-60S Navy chopper hit it with more Hellfires. US Navy F/A-18 Hornets lobbed a 2,000 pound Mk. 84 bomb at it, and a US Air Force B-52 bomber dropped a GBU-12 Paveway laser guided 500 pound bomb on it. A U.S. Navy submarine got into the action, striking it with a Mk. 48 torpedo. Thach was hit with nearly five thousand pounds of high explosive, plus unspent rocket fuel and yet held out for nearly 12 hours. How did it survive so long? Good warship design, which has improved considerably since the days of World War II.

Information for the warheads of those weapons isn't publicly available. Assuming they have the same size warheads as the Chinese and Russian weapons they are based on then they would be likely be less powerful than the Mk. 48 and Harpoon. That says nothing about the guidance systems and and hit probability. The Hoot in particular has an advantage in raw speed. It is important to note that in this video the frigate is completely empty, meaning no combustibles and significantly less weight so it is sitting higher in the water. All compartments are likely sealed as well, so flooding will not spread easily.

I wonder how many hits a gerald-ford carrier can take before sinking. Knowing that they upgraded it's armor and now use lots of divisions in it's hull to prevent the ship from sinking by torpedoes.
Look how it bends and flexes when it gets hit by the torpedoes. I've never seen anything like it. I can't imagine how powerful the torpedoes had to be to do that. Also, that ship is incredibly well built. I expected it to sink like a stone after all that damage it took, but it just kept on floating. I thought modern ships were weak and easy to sink, but it looks like they are as tough as battleships.
The SINKEX I was involved in had a welded up hulk with extra partitions welded in so that it WOULDN'T sink straight away. They examined it afterwards to get usefull information which improves building methods etc.
Modern torpedos do not hit the ship, but explode underneath it, this creates a cavity bubble under a section of the hull that leaves that section unsupported by water, allows the weight of the ship to do the damage as the hull flexes.
I was stationed on the USS Aubrey Fitch FFG-34 85-88, these ships are tough, just look at the USS Stark FFG-31 hit by two Exocet missiles (only one exploded), the ship did not sink, lost 37 sailors though. Stark was our sister ship. Only two of the Perry class frigates were scrapped after decommissioning, the Aubrey Fitch and the Stark, the rest were sold to foreign navies or sunk like the Thach.

Ships are surprisingly resistant to damage, especially once they get to this size. They just have so many compartments and redundancies they just take too long to actually fill with water.
Oliver Hazard Perry class Frigates are known for being really tough ships during the Gulf War one of our OHP Frigates hit a naval mine and shrugged it off, it would have sunk many other ships. USS Stark took to missile hits from an Iraqi Fighter in the 80's and went home under its own power. OHPs are no joke
Yet we are not updating the Perry's with ESSM's even though there are designs for that and our allies are dong similar things with the OHP's we sold or gifted them. What would a Mk 48 ADCAP do to an LCS?
Got a tour on this ship when I was a kid, and played it numerous times on Naval Warfare Simulation games. I always thought it was a damn good little ship. It brought a lot to the table. 30 SM-1, 4 Harpoon, 6 torpedoes, 2 helicopters, 76mm cannon, all steel construction, and a CWIS on the tail. Yep, a damn good little ship.

Torpedoes carry much larger warheads than most missiles do, and thanks to the way in which the non-compressibility of water transmits blast waves, it means that hit-for-hit torpedoes can fuck up a surface vessel for harder than most conventional-tipped missiles could ever dream of.

During SINKEX 2016, my first ship the USS Crommelin FFG37 1989-92, was used for a target ship. Sailed a lot of miles on her. From Long Beach to the Gulf Thailand Shri Lanka, Philippines, Hong Kong to sailing thru the Panama Canal during deployment 90-91. Sad to watch the video. She was sunk in this same area.
I served aboard the USS Aubrey Fitch FFG-34 NS Mayport FL, also sailed many miles on that ship, Panama Canal, crossed the equator, Middle East Force 3-86, Suez Canal, Straits of Hormuz, Pakistan, also crossed the Arctic Circle (87), participated in the Space Shuttle Challenger SAROP January 86.

Yes exactly. Let's face it, unless you hole the hull below the waterline, it's going to keep floating. But an actual live ship in combat, you'd have killed half the crew with those hits and the fuel and ammo would have caught fire and/or exploded, or more likely the ship's crew will have withdrawn the ship from the battle for repairs. This ship here is just a raft now, doesn't matter if the top of it is blown to pieces or a work of art.
Ship also wasn't armed with active anti-missile defense systems, anti-sub weapons and anti-air weapons which would have prevented most of those hits. It is always tit-for-tat on the what ifs.

The skin of the superstructure from the weatherdeck up was AL, the hull and most stuff inside was steel. As someone who spent time on that particular ship, including bringing her to the fleet, I was saddened, however I understand the time for all things past, and she was one of the last of her breed. With the exception of the USS Constitution (laid down in 1794, and still on the lists today) the US Navy is without Frigates or Destroyer Escorts for the first time in history.

What normally kills warships is fire, this ship would have had all of it's fuel and lubricating oil removed, and a lot of the fixtures and fittings that might have added to the flames, I doubt there was much left aboard to burn..
it appeared to just be a air-dropped torpedo, so just a baby, but still, yah. the weapons guys have to feel a bit defeated...after all, compared to capital ships, this ship is just a baby too!
The whole idea was to keep it afloat as long as possible so the many nations that were involved in this live fire exercise could all get target practice on it.
I was assigned to this ship, the USS Thach, as a Sonar Technician. Before serving under that command, I served aboard the USS Lang. The difference between the two ships was night and day. The USS Lang was squared away with great sailors, great officers, great pride, and great moral. The Thach, in comparison, was a nightmare. I hated every single minute aboard that ship. I would have rather spent time in a prison. The worst memories of my life were aboard that ship. I take no pride in having been a member of the crew. I have never been surrounded by a more self-loathing, incompetent bunch. Hence, one can understand the visceral pleasure I feel when I see missiles striking that godforsaken ship. The worst naval command of the six years I spent in the US Navy.

No, it gives the Navy a chance to test weapons on an actual warship.....hence the target practice. Our allies also got a chance to test their weapons too.
True, the Navy has to pay a ship breaker to scrap a ship, not like the days when they were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The exception are the last few carriers that were scrapped, the breakers were paid one penny to dismantle them but the government still had to pay the decontamination of the structure.

With a full battle-ready compliment, I doubt it would be that easy touch her. Still, with her hands tied behind her back and only her armored skin to protect her, she fared far better than the Titanic before succumbing to her injuries. My ship, hull #37 participated in the international sales pitch to lighten inventory making room for a stealthier fleet.
I helped building this ship from launching in the water to completion to sea trials we were exhausted . Many navel supervision signed off each step of the build.? Sad to see her leave our shipyard for the last time.
Worked on some of her weapons interfaces when I was at Sperry Systems management in the late 70s about once a week I drink my morning coffee out of my Oliver Hazard Perry mug I got after her commissioning. A good ship made for a poorly conceived mission. I understand many were sold to Turkey.
Seen lots of SINKEX videos and i'm not sure if our anti-ship missiles really suck or our ships are really well built. One thing I am sure of...our torpedoes are highly effective. We should stick with those.

Half a ton of of explosive more powerful than TNT detonated underwater will do that.

I served aboard the USS Reid FFG-30 before it was sold to Turkey. Nice to see how sturdy they really were.

Always my favorite ship to unrep. Watching them pull away launching from 13 knots to about 40 in as long as it takes to count it out. Just awesome.
Attached to FFG-55 for 4 years in late 80s. Cool to watch for training. Sad to watch because the Elrod is gone as well and was my home for 4 years.

I served on the Kauffman FFG-59 its almost painful to see one of her sisters abused this way. It is however, nice to know that she could take it.

I served aboard the USS Aubrey Fitch FFG-34 NS Mayport FL, also sailed many miles on that ship, Panama Canal, crossed the equator, Middle East Force 3-86, Suez Canal, Straits of Hormuz, Pakistan, also crossed the Arctic Circle (87), participated in the Space Shuttle Challenger SAROP January 86.

There's a hundred damn videos of this event, some as long as 20 minutes and not a single video shows anything more than any of the two minute videos and ZERO videos actually show the thing sink.

Yes exactly. Let's face it, unless you hole the hull below the waterline, it's going to keep floating. But an actual live ship in combat, you'd have killed half the crew with those hits and the fuel and ammo would have caught fire and/or exploded, or more likely the ship's crew will have withdrawn the ship from the battle for repairs. This ship here is just a raft now, doesn't matter if the top of it is blown to pieces or a work of art.
And all the hatches are opened (preventing air-lock buoyancy).

The ship had no fuel and ammo aboard probably. if it had: boom. big time boom.
Ship also wasn't armed with active anti-missile defense systems, anti-sub weapons and anti-air weapons which would have prevented most of those hits. It is always tit-for-tat on the what ifs.

The skin of the superstructure from the weatherdeck up was AL, the hull and most stuff inside was steel. As someone who spent time on that particular ship, including bringing her to the fleet, I was saddened, however I understand the time for all things past, and she was one of the last of her breed. With the exception of the USS Constitution (laid down in 1794, and still on the lists today) the US Navy is without Frigates or Destroyer Escorts for the first time in history.
Wondering why the sound was enabled at all in this video. 9 minutes of helicopter cabin noise, no explosions.

What normally kills warships is fire, this ship would have had all of it's fuel and lubricating oil removed, and a lot of the fixtures and fittings that might have added to the flames, I doubt there was much left aboard to burn..

The whole idea was to keep it afloat as long as possible so the many nations that were involved in this live fire exercise could all get target practice on it.

I was assigned to this ship, the USS Thach, as a Sonar Technician. Before serving under that command, I served aboard the USS Lang. The difference between the two ships was night and day. The USS Lang was squared away with great sailors, great officers, great pride, and great moral. The Thach, in comparison, was a nightmare. I hated every single minute aboard that ship. I would have rather spent time in a prison. The worst memories of my life were aboard that ship. I take no pride in having been a member of the crew. I have never been surrounded by a more self-loathing, incompetent bunch.
Hence, one can understand the visceral pleasure I feel when I see missiles striking that godforsaken ship. The worst naval command of the six years I spent in the US Navy.

Прежде чем такое писать (такую ахинею), нужно хотя бы посмотреть на вес БЧ (тех и других). Этот фрегат был абсолютно пустым (без топлива, вооружения и какой-либо взрывчатки или горючего на борту). Одного бы не хватило. Цель состояла в том чтобы отработать по мишени несколькими видами вооружений (ибо не часто представляется возможность пострелять по реальному боевому кораблю).

No, it gives the Navy a chance to test weapons on an actual warship.....hence the target practice. Our allies also got a chance to test their weapons too.

True, the Navy has to pay a ship breaker to scrap a ship, not like the days when they were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The exception are the last few carriers that were scrapped, the breakers were paid one penny to dismantle them but the government still had to pay the decontamination of the structure.

With a full battle-ready compliment, I doubt it would be that easy touch her. Still, with her hands tied behind her back and only her armored skin to protect her, she fared far better than the Titanic before succumbing to her injuries. My ship, hull #37 participated in the international sales pitch to lighten inventory making room for a stealthier fleet.

I helped building this ship from launching in the water to completion to sea trials we were exhausted . Many navel supervision signed off each step of the build.? Sad to see her leave our shipyard for the last time.

Worked on some of her weapons interfaces when I was at Sperry Systems management in the late 70s about once a week I drink my morning coffee out of my Oliver Hazard Perry mug I got after her commissioning. A good ship made for a poorly conceived mission. I understand many were sold to Turkey.

Seen lots of SINKEX videos and i'm not sure if our anti-ship missiles really suck or our ships are really well built. One thing I am sure of...our torpedoes are highly effective. We should stick with those.
