In 1986 Toyota SA launched a hot-hatch of its own in the form of the Toyota Corolla 160 conquest RSi
It formed part of a Corolla high-performance range including the Avante GLi and Sprinter GLi and this
might come as a surprise but the conquest weigh significantly more and this was due to a reinforced rear hatch. It weighed 970kg which is incredibly light by today's standards.
It was equipped with sports seats, a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, and a leather shifter.
It was equipped with the legendary and highly tunable 4A-GE 1.6L 16V engine which produced 86kW of power and 136Nm.
A couple of years down the line the Toyota conquest 180 RSI arrived and Conquest enthusiasts were confused, they didn't know what to make of this car.
The 4A-GE Twincam was a tough act to follow and whatever Toyota South Africa had to come up with as the follow-up act would have to be more than special to satisfy Conquest enthusiasts.
To keep up with modern fuels, technology and carbon emission regulations the original 4A-GE 16V was shucked out
and replaced with a 1.8L 7A-FE engine producing 1kW less than the original engine at 85kW - the good news though is that it got 10Nm more torques than the original at 155Nm.
My favorite is the 93 1.6 RSi which pushed out 96 Kw. This was the last of the 4AGE 16 valve engines before going 20 valves years later. Nice videos, keep up the good work.

Iconic car of the late 80s! My dad still has his 1987 GLi Twincam. He has upgraded with a newer Corolla, but will not sell for anything! Quicker than the RSI 0-100, the RSI being slighter quicker topend!

What tuning set
I remember when the 1.8 came out, how excited i was, seeing what would be racing around the streets, improving on the 1.6, and FINALLY something to gibe the 1.6 Civic a hiding. But alas, a great disappointment.
Then came the 1.6 20V!!! Awesome stuff, but you dont see them around anymore. NOT AT ALL!! 😔 😢
