In South Africa - late 80s and early 90s the Sapphire V8 was what the Mercedes c63 is today. It was one of those cars that just the rich guys could afford. What made it unique was the fact that it was a "dealer built" car that came with a full factory warranty and all the bells and whistles ie. A/C, electric windows and other comfort features. Only Novel, Grosvenor and JT Developments built them. The Sierra XR8 was a factory built homologation special (252 built) and was "basic spec" and almost ready to race. It was a my dream to own a Sapphire V8, and I finally got one around 3 years ago. The white Sapphire in the video (4:13 to 4:31) is mine.

I am the very lucky owner of number 4, only 50 were built by Novel Ford. She has 32k kms on the clock and in show room condition

When I buy a car and pay 100% duty, where does the duty go? It's tax, right? On me... not the manufacturer... and that's on top of 14 VAT and other made-up levies. By paying the government the same amount I paid the manufacturer it effectively means I buy the car twice! Taxation is a scam.

Mk1 2 litre, faster than the twin sump but also a good deal heavier which did nothing for the handling. We got them here in Oz and they raced in under 2 litre class. Those 13x7 Performance Superlights on it are stupidly over track. I sell that wheel! Increases scrub radius stupidly. Behemouth?? The 302W is the smallest V8 around. Fits in a lot of things and is not heavy. Even a std engine with cast iron everything. The more modern 5L roller cam engine is the best . They will never make huge power unless you throw a lot of money at them. But a 5L with modern alloy heads, intake and performance hydraulic roller cam in a small car will scare the hell out of most people.

What about the Fairmont GT? That was the South African version of the Australian Falcon XY GT, my dad had a yellow one with a 5.7L V8, it was the car I learned to drive in.

The 333i was an awesome car too, as a kid there were these 3 guys that lived across the road from me and one of them Barry, had a red 333i, one of them, Graham, had a blue Porsche, and the other one, Johnny, drove a Casspir sometimes (he was a cop) and a Fiat 133, which I think was his sisters car or something, which he sold to my mom. If I remember correctly, he sold the 333i to a guy called Dave, who was a race car driver and used to have a workshop by Kyalami race track where he built Lotus 7's, and he was hijacked in his driveway and they took the 333i.

I met one of my close friends because he had one of these. I was living in Natal with some friends, and the one girl that lived with us was dating this guy from the midlands, and he came to stay with us one weekend and when he got there on the Friday afternoon I was the only one home so I opened the gate to let him in and as he parked it, he got out and lay down and looked under the car, so I also lay down and looked under the car to see what he was looking at, and that was the first time I saw that suspension, with the disc's next to the diff, and the gearbox at the back and it blew my mind, it was a work of art, I instantly realised why they did that. After we stood up and introduced our selves we sat drinking coffee and talking about cars until everyone else got home, and have been friends every since then.

My mom had a charcoal silver one of these, and used to let me drive it. While I was living in Natal she traded it in on a 5 series bmw, I still can't get over it.

In the late 90's I had a red one, it got stolen in Natal.
