  • Daft Punk were known for their pumping, compressed sound. Legend says they used the Alesis 3630 hardware compressor for its grabby character. Here's how to get a similar effect using any VCA-style compressor plugin.

    a longer release squashes the signal longer & makeup gain brings it all back up. combined with a particular kick-trigger pattern, this provides a "ducking rhythm". the fast compressor attack tells the compressor to quickly duck. the ratio tells the compressor how strong the effect will be. sometimes the ducking effect takes place just between kick & bass, but you can definitely have the kick trigger the entire mix.

    I once walked into a home depot, and about 20 seconds from coming within view of the lighting department, I found a lightbulb that had been buzzing, and made it stop buzzing. A guy working the floor said no one knew where that was coming from for weeks. I cannot hear the difference this compressor allegedly makes. I always wondered what it does, and I still don't get it. Is there something wrong with me?

  • @variator7466

  • @sqwop

    I had a 3630 and I used to get crazy punchy drums on it by driving the gain hard and then setting the threshold so the compressor grabs the kick while it rids of the distortion (because it's compressing) but the high end would still clip but not audibly distort and I got really gritty smashed punchy drums out of it. It's also really useful for consistent pumpy tracks, the only people who rate it bad is those who don't know how to use it or use it for the wrong reasons like classical music or metal or any other music that is all over the place. It's not ideal for that. Btw you can do the same with any vst compressor with a clip function, I used Cytomic glue compressor and the results were almost identical if you want to get the general idea.

    • @AnalogFlava
      @AnalogFlava 9 місяців тому

      i plan on getting one and put it in my chain before my outboard synths hits the soundcard. From mixer out, to the 3630 and in to my daw. Do you think the analog hardware feel give me that extra punch and sound over the vst?

    • @sqwop
      @sqwop 9 місяців тому +1

      @@AnalogFlava It will give unique compression characteristic which might include snap from attack/release combo but don't expect to be wowed but I like it so you might too, also it's dual mono so that gives an extra spatial dimension to a mix but that can also be achieved with vst.
      I've A/B'd it with a glue compressor and apart from unique compression characteristics there's not much more to it to the point where I said to myself I might as well use the vst. There will be varying opinions on that but that's just me, also as I type that I also think it might give something that I can't notice, I feel like it does idk but it won't be anything drastic. Just get one and play with it, it costs literally nothing and you might like it or hear what I don't.
      I've had a few hardware compressors and I've sold them all but the 3630 is something I can't part with because I have a soft spot for it plus the unit I have is mint. They can also be modded easily. If ever I want that pumpy sound I know it's there waiting for me in the box.

    • @AnalogFlava
      @AnalogFlava 9 місяців тому

      Thanks mate! Yeah, I am building a hardware studio and so far I have no "tools" only a few fx's apart from my mixer and synths so to "finalize" it I think I want to try. with a few compressors and such. I saw a modded one for sale locally, but not sure if it's better to just go for the real thing. I am a bit of a "purist" I guess as I am for a totally 90's sound. So no "cheating" for me haha, but don't know if the modded is better or what it adds? @@sqwop

    • @sqwop
      @sqwop 9 місяців тому

      @@AnalogFlavaI modded my old one myself (this is my second one) then I changed it back to original because I didn't like it, it basically had a more usable attack and release but lost its pumpy character. That's the trade off pretty much so decide what you want. If I were you I would get both since you're working out the box where as I am all software so I couldn't justify buying it and it sitting in closet after having used it once.
      I'm just too used to preset recalls. If you buy it and you don't like either you can always sell it on for pretty much what you bought it for

      You can use a DC power supply with the same RMS (root-mean-square) voltage and amperage that is equal or greater than the stock AC power supply.
      You lose a bit of efficiency since you have two bridge rectifiers.
      Used that "trick" on a lot of Nintendo consoles. The old ones had AC PSUs and originals are hard to come by and are pretty expensive, since there are basically no new AC PSUs out there.
