The album doesn't just 'almost' have a hero's journey. It HAS one. Looking into how the music videos were made, it was literally designed to be the soundtrack to the movie they had made. They went to a very famous Japanese animé director, handed him the album and went 'here you go, wanna make an animé movie for us, with this as the only audio?' He said yes, though it does have some sound effects on it from the film studio as well. But there are no spoken words in the movie, it's ALL told straight through this album, in sequence as it is on the record. This album was literally written as the hero's journey for a film they hadn't had made yet! The GENIUS to pull that off!♥️👍
Why Random Access Memories is such a cool finale album from Daft Punk is because instead of using samples from released songs like they previously did, they got artists who they previously sampled to play hours of music for them, and sampled through their own recordings

I can’t believe that sample for the Face to Face hook, hearing Christopher robin for the first time after listening to that hundreds of times has blown my mind!
I love this album, especially the movie that paired with it(interstella 5555). This album told a story and seeing it visually projected was just too perfect.
I have that record even though never being a giant Daft Punk fan. I never really thought too deeply about there music so its really fun having your eyes opened about what went in to make it and how special of a piece of art it is. Thanks for all the breakdowns you do. I've learned so much and even added a lot of new artists to my iTunes playlists.
This is my favorite video from you so far, loved every second of it. Daft punk and discovery in general are huge influences to my sampling style and production.
The cool thing about Discovery is the amount of stuff they made to sound like samples. I especially love the Wurlitzer on Digital Love, which is an homage to Supertramp. Their work is so inspiring.
amazing video bro love how you display it by playing it on your controller while showing it on screen, plus the on-screen editing is so smooth, plus your remakes are so good especially of Face To Face lol idk how you played it so well LIVE, dropped a like and sub man! great stuff
Oof! I hoped you would do this video one day, but to actually see you pull it off is bonkers. Thank you for this, now we can better educate people on why Daft Punk is was influential. It's crazy how they went through all the work for those three albums before RAM and just decide to chop up their own songs for the ALIVE tour. They have such a great understanding of their own music to be able to do that to your own work. This video is epic. I would love a hundred more like these, we should get Patreon started or something. Face to face sample usage is mind opening , it's so easy to take a clip from a song and repeat it over and over , but this is artist innovation on another level, their success is well earned. Definitely makes me want to step up my sample game
amazing video! and just want to point out that you are absolutely right about this album having a hero's journey narrative arc. there's a visual companion piece to this album called interstellar 5555 that's has to be mentioned when speaking about this album that shows you the journey that hero goes on. it has no dialogue, and each song from the album is a scene in the film that tells the hero's story. it is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it to fans of this album. it really drives the whole project home.
I really thought Interstella 5555 (the companion animated movie that tells a full story to this album) would show up more. Great breakdown of the music on this epic album. If you like this album definitely seek the movie.
You've done justice to the brilliance of their sampling & production methods (and sharing it in a form that will educate a younger audience, possibly inspiring future producers). Loved this video Brandon, you've been on a roll lately with amazing content. Your deep love and appreciation of music, in general, couldn't be hidden from us, if you tried. Excellent video! Love how you show the samples being captured, then processed and then voilá, almost the finished song. I would love to see a similar video on St Germain's Tourist album.
Its worth mentioning that both “Something About Us” and “Voyager” interpolate elements from Oliver Cheatham’s “Get Down Saturday Night” - a sample that has also found its way into other huge tracks since (Michael Gray’s “The Weekend”, Room 5’s “Make Luv”) And Thundercat samples Something About Us on “A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II)” I feel like Im missing more but i can’t get over the influence Daft Punk and this album have had, thank you for making this video!!
Nice one. Yeah with something about Us I always thought it sounds like oliver cheatham but where do you hear elements of get down its Saturday night in voyager?
@@THOMASTAYIMOEHL i remember hearing that the chord progression for the pad in the beginning and throughout Voyager came from the pad in Get Down Saturday Night but now that Ive looked into it more it might just be a coincidence, Ive been seeing people say its a fully original song
Superb video, well done. I've been listening to Daft Punk constantly since my discovery of them in 2001, this album is truly a masterpiece and your breakdown and analysis really shows that (for those who didn't already know)
Face to face is my favourite track on that album. Listened to it again in between watching elements of your videos and ive just somehow fallen deeper in love with DP!! Thanks man! Great video. We clearly arent/werent worthy of their incredible music.
I grew up on this album and it changed my life I remember showing my friends in middle school and we all started djing on this website in tech lab, really cool to see you play the samples live good video really cool !
Oh man. Oh man, oh man. This is a very special album to me. I was 11 when it was released and remember hearing One more Time on toonami. Then 6 years later, I'm graduating high school, entering college and come across a video that said "I love Daft Punk...but..." then proceeded to show some of the samples. I thought it was so cool, and decided to listen to the actual album since I had only known 3 songs off of it. I listened to that album so much I can't think of 2007 without thinking about Daft Punks discovery. I then fell down the rabbit hole of people trying to find ALL of the samples and recreate them. I remember everyone trying to figure out Face to face for the longest time, but I never heard someone point out the "Face to face now, face to face with me" like...WHAT lmao.
My friends and I would joke about the different words we thought we were hearing in the Face to Face samples. I remember "dugong" (you are) and "mr robot" (christopher rob)
Dude, the amount of passion you have for what you do and the excellent way you communicate it through video is inspiring. These explorative videos are top notch, and the fact that they are delivered from the perspective of a DJ who like me, loves samples, it's just extremely special. Just want to say thank you and keep them coming.
On the track ‘Teachers’ from the Homework album, they cite a lot of their musical influences/heroes. Clearly very much by House, Techno and Funk artists from Chicago and Detroit scenes 💚
You seriously blew my mind with the Face to Face part!! I LOVE this album so darn much and I got chills when you did that part of the album. It's so amazing how they did it and I am glad that we got such a masterpiece yet sad I never got to see them live.
Best thing about this album for me was discovering (yes I went there) the animated music videos were a whole coherent movie that can be watched from start to finish. I spent an evening watching it and the album stayed on my playlist for years. It actually never left.
Great video. Wicked topic, couldn’t agree more. I thought it was quite cool to hear a professional who was well into his years explaining how Daft Punk blew him away. It seemed as if he couldn’t believe how much depth the album had by nature, all of it. Glad they stayed together as long as they did. They were insanely creative while working together. Not many like them.
Love watching and re-watching this video. As a person who went to college for music composition (said college shut down), and also is a huge fan of daft punk, this video never fails to fill me with motivation and passion for anything. Keep up all the great work!
I finally found the Edwin Birdsong record at a local record shop and got it for a steal of a deal. I wouldn’t have grabbed it if I hadn’t watched your video on Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. Salute! Edit: Also, I think breaking down 10cc’s music and how they’ve been sampled through history (ie: Dilla’s Workinonit) would be sick. They are definitely under appreciated
This is nuts, Ive been a big DP Fan since Junior High 1997. I was 17 When discovery came out And just now bought it on vinyl a few days ago. The Way you broke down DP's Tracks and played them Samples is incredible. As a Man born in the states to Liberian immigrant parents, I didn't even know about Eddie Johns and him being a Liberian. I had to Draw the dial back 3 times just to make sure i heard you say what i thought you said. That's some Satellite vision right there. You made another damn good video. You're a scientist Bro. I love the Kanye Vid as well. Im still trying to get Graduation on Vinyl LOL. I Love RIPX as well, i bought it 2 Months ago to Midi Convert some old House Tracks i produced years ago, its an incredible Tool. Appreciate you.
Good video (I mean as a big compliment).- rarely do I see a video which breaks down (and nicely visually demonstrates) sampling in popular music in a way that laypeople should be able to grasp - and yet still be accurate and detailed! I am a producer/singer/songwriter, not a DJ, never heard of RipX but am getting the trial rn (the core functionality u show is a straight up riip of Melodyne's UI for doing that but this seems to go much further where Melodyne stops). My only gripe is an in-dept about Discovery w/o mentioning the Roland VP9000? This is about sampling from a DJ perspective, so acceptable, but its a crazy story that speaks to how iconic and game-changing it is. Summary: Roland's debut of VariPitch was revolutionary and used all over the album famously, giving it the vocoder-like sound that can do things vocoders or sampling previously. couldn't. But the VP9000 was super expensive so it was a complete failure because everyone thought you were copying the Discovery sound if you used it (and/or was too expensive / complicated / people lacked the creativity to use it otherwise). Ive always wanted one.
Yeah but thinking of actually doing that, picking the right record, sampling the right parts, using the right drums to fit is way harder than how youre making it sound
I've been waiting SOOOOO LONG for you to do a video on this. Daft punk is amazing and discovery is beyond godlike. Fantastic video my man! If you haven't heard the Alive 2007 alive albums where they mix their songs together, plz listen. SO GOOOOOOD!!!

Man, this was a great video! Watched till the end! I’ve been a huge daft punk fan forever. I feel House production doesn’t get it’s just due sometime. When One More Time came out, it was such a banger people forget how well it was produced. I was just a little kid when Around The World came out, but being from Chicago I was lucky enough that it was really played a lot. I love where daft punk started there music journey and ended. Such a talented duo!
10cc’s achievement to do what they did with the contemporary technology available is stunning. The _whole_ song is them on vocals with a small backbeat. The beautiful background hiss you hear are the overtones produced when all the “ahhs” are left at a minimal volume through the whole single. They then literally went next door to the receptionist in their studio and asked her spontaneously to do some talking. She had no idea this was coming. It’s a career defining achievement.
Amazing video as always, but the samples you showcased for 'Face to Face' are only the tip of the iceberg. There are so many "microchops" of various other songs from the same era that weren't discovered until recently. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the support 🔥
Daft Punk are absolute legends in dance music, and Discovery is a masterpiece. I cried manly tears when they broke-up in 2021
Don't remind me that it was already more than two years ago 😭
Dude I love that you break this stuff down. Most people never understand this in depth of someone’s creation so you help us see the true genius outside of just the music sounding good. You help us understand the whole story.
One of my favourite albums of all time. I had it on CD when i was a kid and i would listen to it on repeat every night for about 6 months. Phenominal!
You’re my fav channel beside Polyphonic when it comes to history of music and understanding all the ingredients what makes these tunes great! Keep it up 🙏🏼
I can’t believe that sample for the Face to Face hook, hearing Christopher robin for the first time after listening to that hundreds of times has blown my mind!
Ngl this is the best music youtube channel of all time. Everything from the script to the production quality is 🔥
🙏🙏
I love this album, especially the movie that paired with it(interstella 5555). This album told a story and seeing it visually projected was just too perfect.
I have that record even though never being a giant Daft Punk fan. I never really thought too deeply about there music so its really fun having your eyes opened about what went in to make it and how special of a piece of art it is. Thanks for all the breakdowns you do. I've learned so much and even added a lot of new artists to my iTunes playlists.
Face 2 Face is top 5 songs of all time to me. This break down blew me away.
You're starting to become something like music class to most of us. Thank you very much!
This is an absolutely INCREDIBLE breakdown of this shit. BRAVO, sir. I’m speechless. That 10 CC’s finding, outstanding.
these guys are geniuses, never seen so much dedication in a band like them, and probably we haven't discovered all samples they used
I was literally just listening to this album earlier today. Wondering if you would ever do a video on it. Dreams do come true. Great channel man and great video
Big respect how you combine your Musik skills, know how, research and content creation. Im always happy when I see a new upload. The face to face break down was mind blowing👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
High quality content 💯💯💯never stop with these videos!
This is my first intro to this channel, and holy shit, what an impact. The pace and breadth of this video is fantastic.
So hyped for RAM's 10 year anniversary today
Omg its ten years already 😢??
I have it on my mind like it was yesterday
Face to face sample usage is mind opening , it's so easy to take a clip from a song and repeat it over and over , but this is artist innovation on another level, their success is well earned. Definitely makes me want to step up my sample game
Man your channel rips, you are great! Thank you for the great content 🙏
amazing video! and just want to point out that you are absolutely right about this album having a hero's journey narrative arc. there's a visual companion piece to this album called interstellar 5555 that's has to be mentioned when speaking about this album that shows you the journey that hero goes on. it has no dialogue, and each song from the album is a scene in the film that tells the hero's story. it is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend it to fans of this album. it really drives the whole project home.
You've become one of my favorite music channels over the last 6 months, and I can't wait to see what other tracks / albums / artists you'll share your love and knowledge of! Keep up the great work!
Excellent video! Love how you show the samples being captured, then processed and then voilá, almost the finished song. I would love to see a similar video on St Germain's Tourist album.
This is seriously mind blowing!! Much respect to you for breaking this down like that.
Its worth mentioning that both “Something About Us” and “Voyager” interpolate elements from Oliver Cheatham’s “Get Down Saturday Night” - a sample that has also found its way into other huge tracks since (Michael Gray’s “The Weekend”, Room 5’s “Make Luv”)
And Thundercat samples Something About Us on “A Fan’s Mail (Tron Song Suite II)”
I feel like Im missing more but i can’t get over the influence Daft Punk and this album have had, thank you for making this video!!
Definitely - I wish I would have said more on that! And yes, this album is massively influential, incredible all around
I've been listening to Daft Punk constantly since my discovery of them in 2001, this album is truly a masterpiece and your breakdown and analysis really shows that (for those who didn't already know)
Never been much into this style of music, but Daft Punk transcend genres, and are definitely worth checking out.
Face to face is my favourite track on that album. Listened to it again in between watching elements of your videos and ive just somehow fallen deeper in love with DP!!
Thanks man! Great video. We clearly arent/werent worthy of their incredible music.
Todd Edwards is a LEGEND. He literally MADE UK garage
I grew up on this album and it changed my life I remember showing my friends in middle school and we all started djing on this website in tech lab, really cool to see you play the samples live good video really cool
!
How am I only learning about this channel now!? History AND technique? Hells yes!
My friends and I would joke about the different words we thought we were hearing in the Face to Face samples. I remember "dugong" (you are) and "mr robot" (christopher rob)
Thanks
Thank you so much for the support! 🙏
Man I feel so happy to see the Robots being popular again, I love your videos also you're such a good content creator 🙌🤖
🙏
Dude, the amount of passion you have for what you do and the excellent way you communicate it through video is inspiring. These explorative videos are top notch, and the fact that they are delivered from the perspective of a DJ who like me, loves samples, it's just extremely special. Just want to say thank you and keep them coming.
On the track ‘Teachers’ from the Homework album, they cite a lot of their musical influences/heroes. Clearly very much by House, Techno and Funk artists from Chicago and Detroit scenes 💚
:::robot voice::: BRIAN WILSON
@@J.Braxton Haha, very good, touche 😂😎
Very much, but not totally 😉
They cited Dr Dre as well most likely a nod to his g gunk production technique on The Chronic. That alone felt like a history lesson inusicology
I never knew that was how 10cc created I’m not in love. That makes me respect the song that much more wow 😮
I need this video to go viral, this level of effort deserves it! Amazing!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t think anybody else loved this stuff as much as I do 👏🏽
This is nuts, Ive been a big DP Fan since Junior High 1997.
How to Daft Punk: Take an old record, slow it down, cut and play housebeat.
Yeah but thinking of actually doing that, picking the right record, sampling the right parts, using the right drums to fit is way harder than how youre making it sound
Forgot one important step, pick good sources and actually make it sound good
I've been waiting SOOOOO LONG for you to do a video on this. Daft punk is amazing and discovery is beyond godlike. Fantastic video my man! If you haven't heard the Alive 2007 alive albums where they mix their songs together, plz listen. SO GOOOOOOD!!!
Brilliant digging as usual, always an education.
For me, Homework is by far their best album. It genuinely blew mind when i first heard it. I’m indifferent to the follow ups, just not my taste. They were incredibly talented 😎
I finally introduced my 3-year-old to this record and he loved it!! it's a classic.
0:17 Video starts here
Nicely done! I used to teach this back in the day but not to this level… how you/they did “Face to Face”…. yup, that was special. Big up
I'm a nerd and I approve of this video
No shit 😂! Totally
You continually blow it out of the park. Make me want to make music through exploration and beyond!
Idk how you seem to profile all of my favorites. I’ve watched many of your videos but this one really takes the cake. Masterfully done!
Amazing video as always, but the samples you showcased for 'Face to Face' are only the tip of the iceberg. There are so many "microchops" of various other songs from the same era that weren't discovered until recently. This video does a pretty good job of recreating all those samples ua-cam.com/video/maaVzL8zhoQ/v-deo.html This just shows how incredible Daft Punk were at their craft!
"No time for an intro" *gets straight into it!* THE WORLD NEEDS MORE OF THIS! GG
But he did still have an intro anyways...
There's something beautifull when you get explained and understard, why you like something that you liked, and you didnt know why you did. And thenk you like it even more. THANK YOU.
Amazing performance in this video. Beautifully shot and edited. Excellent graphics.
Daaaaaamn, this is so cool! I actually had no idea! I really love your channel, I'm learning so much about my favorite artists & sampling. Thanks Brandon!!
Great video. I never appreciated Daft Punk on this level. I thought they were fun, catchy songs, but didn't see the detailed complexity of their compositions. Thanks.
I swear this is becoming my favorite channel
Listening to you make the parts up from their samples was AMAZING! Thank you!
