  • When we asked Marc 'Try4ce' Duddleson from My Life In Gaming to take a look at Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation 5 for us, we were looking forward to an expert analysis from someone who knows the game inside out. And we got that... and so much more. This isn't just a tech breakdown of FF14, it's the story of the game from its early beginnings, through its troubled launch, to its relaunch and deployment across multiple generations. It's a video we're proud to share with you!

      How should I progress?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming 3 роки тому +7

      [Try4ce] You can sometimes get additional level-appropriate armor (and some lore insights) by doing regular quests, but it's usually not that necessary. These days I usually skip over those myself. The main quests I do while working though each expansion (aside from the main story) are the blue ones, but usually only when they offer aether current attunement, which is required for flying in expansion areas (ARR flying is freely available now with no questing if you have a mount for it). So yeah if you feel overwhelmed by the number of quests, I'd say just do main story, but if a particular NPC piques your curiosity, no harm in seeing what they have to say. But for the most part I'd say such quests aren't critical for keeping yourself leveled and equipped. Doing Duty Roulette is a faster way to level if you happen to fall behind.

    To help explain the dual sense haptics, the haptics use voice coil actuators in the pad to produce the vibrations. These are high powered speakers that vibrate the pad.
    As a result the haptics API uses sounds and sound waves to vibrate the pad. And not the standard vibration signals.
    In this case the game is simply sending the sound of the footsteps to the haptics engine as is. Which is why the haptics change depending on distance and on the surface you're running on.
    If you put your ear to the pad you can actually hear the sounds Coming from the haptic motors.
    As a side note, because of this you can plug your dual sense into your PC and make the pad vibrate by using it as a speaker (windows recognises the dual sense haptics as an external USB speaker).

    • @jayplays9976
      @jayplays9976 3 роки тому +6

      @@0uttaS1TE yes actually they do. Install VB audio and use that to route in-game audio to the pad. Your pad will basically vibrate in tune with what happening on screen. For Metro Exodus you even get full haptics and resistive triggers on PC.

    • @jayplays9976
      @jayplays9976 3 роки тому +6

      @@0uttaS1TE that's what I wonder as well. The dual sense has some suspiciously robust PC support. The built in Mic can be used as a microphone as is with no additional drivers (I use it in all my work calls), the haptics I like to use them when listening to music or gaming.
      Resistive triggers I think it's a custom API Sony gave them because I doubt these guys are cheesing any emulators or backdoor drivers.

    The reason for the big difference in performance between the native ps5 app and the ps4 pro version is due to the high quality ambient occlusion that is used on the ps5 app. This is a killer on pc as well at higher resolutions and is completely absent on the ps4 and ps4 pro version. Amazed to see this overlooked in a digital foundry video but ah well.
    Would be really nice to see a 4k option for the game that scales back things like ambient occlusion and other taxing visuals features to allow for a mode that gets closer to that 60fps goal at 4k.

    I genuinely believe that any gamer should at least experience an mmorpg at least once. It can be an experience that you won't find in any other genre of gaming. Sure it does require some dedication to get going and get over the learning curve and there's many types of mmorpg's from themepark to my personal favorite, sandbox. It can turn out to be genre that may surprise you and get you hooked. Thw type of hooked where you forge friendships and memorable experiences.
    My first ever mmorpg was Star Wars Galaxies back in the early 2000's. A game I only bought at Walmart as a kid because of how much I enjoyed playing through Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I craved more Star Wars but the game was so different it had very little in common with KotOR. It came with a 30 day subscription like all mmorpg's and a week in I was ready to quit because I didn't know what the hell to do. It was a Sandbox mmorpg.
    It wasn't until I landed in a player built city in the planet of Talus that I ran into another player right outside the shuttle port who took me under their wing and explained to me how the game worked, the basics anyway because there was so much more to this game. He turned out to be the guild master of that particular city and mayor. He gave me my own house, a swoop bike and some basic padded armor and food buffs. He gathered some other guild members and we ran some missions from the terminal and later on went hunting for some armor materials. My mind was completely blown, I'd never experienced something like this game. Sure I'd played Age of Empiers 2 online with a friend of mine and Diablo 2 but Star Wars Galaxies was on a realm of it's own. It was like I was a regular person living in the universe of Star Wars, people had professions they specialized in, there were no Jedi's or you're the only hero that can save the universe nonsense. You were nothing special unless you wanted to be and you could. You could be anything you wanted. A smuggler? Sure. A bounty Hunter? Yes. A Droid Engineer, a Chef, an Entertainer, Fencer, Pikeman, Armorsmith etc.
    I took a liking to armor crafting so started on my path to becoming a Master Armorsmith. I had to survey planets with drones to locate all the materials I needed. Each server spawned their own quality of each particular resource for a limited amount of time before it reset that effected the outcome of the armor produced. You needed chemical and mineral extractors placed in the planets where there were resources, these extractors had to be fueled and came in different sizes. I was so immersed in that universe, each day doing the rounds, fueling the extractors, emptying the resources collected to make room for the new, going back to my city to meet with a Master Taylor so they could fabricate a blue print for me to mass produce Composite Armor pieces to sell in my own vendor in our player built city.
    Everything used by players in the game, be it weapons, armor, travel mounts, droids, furniture or buff food was player made. The different crafting professions required cooperation with other crafting professions to motivate you to interact with other players and form partnerships. The better resource quality used the better that item's statistics were so was the name of the player engrained in the items description that crafted that particular item so you could be famous as some players were for crafting the best armor, weapons etc. It was such an experience that lead me to playing many other mmorpg's including World of Warcraft back in 2005 for a few years but I've yet to find a game as immersive as Star Wars Galaxies was. Maybe it's nostalgia speaking or maybe it's because it was my first mmorpg or maybe the game was really that good but mmorpg's as a genre is probably my favorite.

    I’m gonna be that guy and say that my Final Fantasy 14 (3yrs) experience eclipsed World
    Of Warcraft (7yrs) . Granted FF14 was heavily inspired by W.O.W. and a drastic change from FF11, it was a unique enough experience that delivered on visuals that were eye popping, game play mechanics that felt engaging and for an ongoing online game, having one of the Top 3 Final Fantasy stories of the entire franchise. If you’re on the fence, FF14 is FTP until level 60 and you’ll definitely experience a lot just for that free time you have. Highly recommended.

      ... if u go thru all the Main Story (and Class) quests, time can vary, but if u focus, about 7-14 days per expansion (ARR, HW, Sblood, Sbringers), so ca. 4x 7-14 days to reach endgame..

The load times when teleporting is quite long especially in populated areas, also takes a while for all the people to appear on my screen. Doing hunts is a nightmare, feels like frame rate drops to 20-10 then the hunt bosses won't appear due to large hunt parties. By the time it finally appear it's already dead and I don't receive any rewards. 33:09, you seem surprised that the frame drops occur at 1080p, but you should not be, because it's obviously not a GPU bottleneck at all, instead I think it's simply some problem in their code, maybe a streaming bug. Probably the game was just recompiled for PS5 but it's still the same game with the same memory management (which is optimized for PS4, not PS5, so there's already a deficit here), so here it's probably trying to stream in the data to be able to render the back as you turn the camera, and that causes the slow down. And that's also why when the back appears in view, there is no slow down, because those assets have already been loaded.

And it's an interesting point of comparison because you can see the backwards compatible version both run better AND look better. the ps5 version is so bad & weird, i can almost get 30fps in 4k with a pretty old gtx970 at the same setting the console use, and the ps5 is just above 30 with a much higher gpu than the 970

    Originally I played this on the PS4 for the most part it was fine, but for outside raids where there are lots of people it was a lag fest where I was literally unable to do anything, and would get killed very easily due to the stuttering.
    When PS4 Pro got released I got this and the outside raids were markedly improved I was able to play more or less normally outside except for some stuttering back and forth that would cause sometimes issues.
    I dropped the game around Shadowbringers launch before the Ex Trials got released I technically went back on free campaign stuff, but I didn’t honestly play except logged it logged out and deleted it.
    Not sure how PS5 runs now I do wish the graphics were improved as everything looks very flat and textures are poor.

      Honestly, FFXIV is really easy to enjoy as a casual player. You can complete pretty much 100% of the main story by just logging in for an hour or so as and when you feel like it.

    I really hope Endwalker brings a lot more PS5 optimizations. I remember Yoshi-P saying (I think the same event as the PS5 reveal? or the Live Letter shortly after?) recently that the whole of Creative Business Unit 3 (so both the XIV and XVI teams) had a single PS5 dev kit to share due to the parts shortages, so Sony couldn't ship them additional ones.

    A lovely change of pace. I do like the themed graphics, and while i imagine that takes a lot of effort to create and edit, it would add something going forward with themed content (Cyberpunk UI colored frame rate graph when applicable, game specific graphics for DF Retro, etc)
