The biggest mistakes in music history

- Our favourite musicians may often appear to be superhuman beings, whose extraordinary success was predestined. You would imagine in the earlier stages of their careers, their extraordinary potential and budding genius of greats such as Madonna, the Beatles and Lady Gaga was plain for all to see. But surprisingly many music industry professionalsnot only failed to recognise their talent, but also passed up on the opportunity to sign these once-in-a lifetime artists, and in turn missed out their piece of stratospheric success.
So why exactly were Madonna’s earlier demos turned down? Why were the Beatles rejected for a record deal in favour of sixties band Brian Poole and the Tremeloes? And why was Lady Gaga dropped by her first record label? This mini documentary explores these questions and more.

Don’t forget to check out my last video about Madonna’s last great era • What was Madonna's las...
People think Madonna was a manufactured act, the truth is she turned up in New York at 19 with a dance scholarship, it took six years of hustle and at times shameless self promotion to become the hottest act on the planet. Nothing was handed to her. It's an amazing story, I hope we get our Biopic 😊
So true- you can't manufacture a Madonna. The vision came from her and her alone.
She was manufactured by herself, and that's what one call an artist
Biopsy 😂
Is Madonna ok? Why does she need a biopsy? 😂
@@2expressmranderson haha! I said we get ours... You know for health, nothing to do with autocorrect 🙈
Almost every major label turned down one of the best selling albums of all time Jagged Little Pill, when Alanis and Glen tried to score a deal for Alanis with the demo versions of the songs. Maverick records owned partly by Madonna were the only company that wanted Alanis and the album
Oh that’s interesting - thanks for this
And Madonna made bank off of her
I remembered my business professor in College here in the Philippines, told me that one of the reasons why she really boomed is because she was a businesswoman went beyond music, she knew how to sell as a brand herself despite that her singing and dancing was pretty much just decent. She perfected the use of over the top looks from Patti Labelle, Diana Ross and Cher and post modernist thinkers like Bowie and Elton John to create the perfect reinvention schemes with a purpose that may depict controversy and push the envelope to sell.
That’s a good analysis. Yes she’s a very astute businesswoman which she doesn’t like to be known. Remember in ‘Truth or Dare’ she refused to be filmed in her business meetings? She keeps that side of herself very quiet.
That’s true but I don’t think it’s fair to discredit her singing ability, especially considering how she was born with basically no musical ability, she had to WORK to be able to sing well and write and produce music. There are many videos where her voice sounds fantastic, especially midway through two hour, high choreography productions
@@benjiloft8636Im not discrediting her tho, she went beyond it, like world pop culture itself. Like even if you dont know her songs, her looks, you know her imagery and brand beyond the music (unlike most of her peers) something a lot of artists are mimicking until today.
LA Reid also worked on Sheena Easton's 1988 album "the lover in me", it's a pop-RnB banger from the Scottish bombshell!👏👏👏
I never knew that - thanks for sharing 😀
In some cases like the Beatles, it might have been a good thing that they were rejected by the record label at first. This freed them up to later on be signed by powerful labels that could distribute their records better and promote them better and have a better producer and other more qualified people backing them up.
Yes that’s true- it was better on the Beatles’ end. But for the people who turned them down it was a huge failure on their part. Maybe they wouldn’t have experienced the same success, with Decca or met George Martin but they surely would’ve still done well. I suppose we’ll never know.
This is not really accurate. Parlophone Records was not at all a powerful record label when they signed the Beatles. Parlophone was a small company that made novelty records, comedy records and released some jazz. George Martin was not at all a player in pop music. It was one of the most miraculous things that the beatles ended up there because George Martin fit them like a glove, and though he had been recording weird comedy records up until he met the beatles, he was a classically trained musician with a great ear for pop. Decca was the much more well known label at that point, but quickly became eclipsed by the Martin and the Beatles.
The man that signed Madonna just passed away. :( RIP Seymour Stein!!!!
I saw that - so sad. His autobiography is brilliant - well worth a read.
im so obsessed with your channel
Thank you 😀🙏
Another big mistake was when Virgin records(?) paid Mariah Carey millions of dollars to leave after glitter flopped. I cant imagine it was better for them than let her release more albums because even her flops still sold over a million.. And eventuslly she sold over 10 million again
Yes but I really don’t think Virgin could’ve turned things around for Mariah. She needed to start afresh somewhere else
@@jonnyharvey they just needed to let her do her thing, Mariah is a legend
@@jonnyharvey maybe not but I still dont think it would be better for the label to pay her to leave because even her flops were selling over million and shoul generate pretty good revenue
How could you forget about the Spice Girls Jonny? lol...Simon Cowell didn't want to sign them. He also said that was the biggest mistake in his career. Great video! :)
Thanks! Oh I could do another video on that. I could do a whole video of Simon Cowell’s mistakes 😂
@@jonnyharveyplease do !!
Gaga QUEEN
I love you videos! They are so informative!
Thank you 😀🙏
Love this stories! I thought I was well informed, but this l never knew.
😀🙏
Love this! please make more videos on Lady Gaga
People went from thinking she was mimicking Madonna to thinking she was mimicking Julie Andrews? Her entire career is just inferior imitations of other artists.
@@gnu_andrew Lol, Oscars, Baftas, Emmys, and the most awarded song in history. Madonna will never see that. Your age is showing.
@@gnu_andrew go stream the 80s hasbeen
@@yordaryperez7023 I don't stream music like freeloaders, I buy music and support artists. I'm also not into 80s music - too cheesy for my taste - and haven't heard of "hasbeen", whoever they are.
@@madhijkoite6340 who, Julie Andrews? Madonna isn't an actress, she's a musician, so why would she have Oscars? Your comment makes no sense whatsoever.
Everything happens how it was meant to. That's what I choose to believe
that's true. A certain amount of destiny and fate must come into play in these things.
seated!
Jonny, if you like The Beatles, Madonna and Lady Gaga, we have the same taste in music.
😀
Columbia records passed on Madonna too
I didn't hear that. Do you have a source for that info?
@@jonnyharvey also Factory Records passed signing her ''Madonna played The Haçienda early in her career and was almost signed to Factory Records. Tony Wilson would later claim he passed on signing her because he "Already did pop with OMD". He also passed on signing Soft Cell
We need more Gaga content please
Yes - I agree. I’m working on it
Had The Beatles been signed by Decca Records, it's impossible to tell how the story would've played out. Crucially, they wouldn't have been paired up with producer George Martin at Parlophone, a crucial element in their sound and musical development sometimes referred to as 'The Fifth Beatle'
Everybody watch Marry The Night. Gaga was inhumanely betrayed by a producer that worked for L.A Reid. She fell pregnant through a nonconsensual experience, she was threatened with her work to be “burned”. Dropped is more than a deeply understating euphemism for what she endured. I am so glad that she found freedom from that label; albeit_’ , and strived to continue to become a heroic idol for the people of the world. No artist has to be to everybody’s tastes, but she has always sought to make the world a uniquely better place with her career. “I’m gonna marry the night, I won’t give up on my life,”
I think I'd heard about about before.
Madonna was also passed on by cbs records now Sony music fyi
I think I read that before. Do you have a source for that info?
Wasn’t gaga assaulted at that record label? Glad she got dropped she clearly was suffering back then
The way she talked about her trauma was heartbreaking I hope she’s healing well and I’m glad interscope took her in and made history
Моя ты курочка, моя ты нежная💋
Johnny, can you get a better microphone buddy? Love your videos but definitely could do with a HD mic. 😊
hello - sorry to hear that. I have a Rode Video Mic Pro & it cost quite a bit. It was recommended to me by another UA-camr.
Can you be more specific? Are the levels too low? Are the parts where I cut out the breaths really apparent? I listened back to the video 3/4 times before I uploaded and I was happy with the sound quality. Thanks
I don’t think it’s the mic, it’s more the echo that diminishes the quality provided by the mic. Maybe try out some acoustic panels?
@@Aleksandr017 okay - I close the curtain in my room when recording. I have wooden floors - do you think carpet would help? I will google 'acoustic panels'
@@jonnyharvey anything that swallows the sound instead of bouncing it back will help, a carpet among that.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
😀
Katy Perry was dropped by Island Def Jam and Columbia Records.
Yes I know that but I wanted to focus more on albums artists
Make more videos on Lady Gaga, I'd love them. Regards, cute!!!!
Working on it! 😀
@@jonnyharvey Yeeeeeeeesss!! Thank you! 😎
Where is Katy Perry?
I really like Katy but I wouldn’t put in her the same category as those other three.
@@jonnyharvey what about Donna summer, she was offered 'Whats love got to do with it' but never realised it before it was given to Tina Turner
Hopefully retired.
Taylor swift??She was rejected by MANY as well
Oh I didn't know that - I will look into it. Thanks
Her parents did a lot of the work for her so it does not hold the same weight as Madonna or Lady Gaga who had to do everything by themselves.
@@brentthompson1607 nope they didnt..What lot of work tho??
They moved places for her...
And video is not about who had worst backgroung but who got rejected and made it huge
@@adiawasthi4589 every artists gets rejected. Taylor Swift is not special. However, Taylor Swift was not an adult or broke. Her family did a lot for her. The same can not be said for Madonna. That is why Taylor is not grouped in there.
@@brentthompson1607 Its not Taylor's fault she had supporting parents..
And how does family or financial background pertain to this video??
The video is about biggest mistakes done regarding rejecting artists since they got huge eventually..
Not abt who were broke or lived in streets
So if Taylor getting rejected is not special ..then so is Lady gaga..& Madonna..what tf are they doing here??
And by ur logic..artists being broke be4 fame and having no family support is not special either.
Even Mariah Carey is missing 2 support ur point..
Tina Turner's solo career should be here ?
why - which record labels turned her down? I will have to look into it.
@@jonnyharvey after leaving her duo with Ike, no one would sign her for years. She had to do small shows just to make a leaving because she was broke. Ike managed all of their funds so when they divorced she had no money. No label wanted to sign her because she was old and im sure racism and sexism played a role. Please do look into it.
Madonna is an amazing artist and Gaga is a good pop singer.
Stop calling Madonna »Madge« 🙉🙉🙉
It’s just a nick- name. It’s not offensive in any way. It can be interpreted as short for ‘majesty’ or a colloquialism for a middle aged housewife.
Why?? What does it matter, it’s been her nickname, especially in the U.K.. Chill Daddy!!! Lol
It does matter because Madonna herself never accepted that nickname. It is also limited to the UK and their tabloids, outside it was never a popular name for Madonna.
@@novalis I was going to respond but then I realised this argument is too ridiculous to engage in.
@@jonnyharvey Uh huh, whatever that means. I voiced my opinion - do whatever you like, it is your choice.
well ...
as far as records sales go, LA Reid didn't miss much, gaga's sales have been on the declined since her first album, 'the fame' remains her biggest seller, and each consecutive album there after have sold less than the previous one... I guess his regret is not being the one manufacturing gaga's persona 🤷🏽♂ oh well
She's one of the most influential & important artists from the last 15 years. Most people's album sales have declined over that time period.
@@jonnyharvey yes she was, as of now, she's just a recognized singer with no hits on the radio, Adele and swift are among those that still selling tons of records and churning hits on the radio.
The idea that Lady Googoo is in the same class as the Beatles and Madonna is just laughable. A circus tribute act at best.
I couldn’t disagree more
So true, yes she Gogo can sing, but that's it 😅
Lol she is literally insanely talented but I don’t have to tell you that, it speaks for itself
@@jonnyharvey clearly. But, based on that, it's hard for me to take your other opinions seriously.
@@RihannaChristina I think you got the insane part right, at least. Definitely a head case.
Everything the gagster does is an epic fail
Well that's clearly NOT true
@@jonnyharvey her music career has tanked. Her film career is poor .. she’s an attention seeking Madonna wannabe . Madonna Called her correctly out. The queen of pop doesn’t miss a trick .
