      Honestly don't think this was the right game to start with in that it felt too much like a comparison to the original version. Felt like it was catering more to "should I revisit this game?" than "is this a good game and why or why not?" I know you spoke to it some, I'm not saying it completely missed that, just felt it could use more examining/discussing the game itself

    Finally got my copy last night and am up to chapter 2, and holy crap the presentation is incredible. Everything reacting to being bonked has turned me into a menace, the characters and even the environment are so expressive throughout, and the new soundtrack has made it so it’s never crossed my mind to use the Gamecube sounds.
    My main complaint is that the game feels slow at times. Nothing to do with the 30 fps either, but the text speed needs a faster option for dense cutscenes, and the Battle menus have a delay between selecting say Jump then being able to select the type of jump. I’ve gotten used to the later by the end of Chapter 1, so a patch or mod for the text speed would make this perfect to me.

    Considering the game has some rather drastic changes (specifically to backtracking, super bosses, new in game trophies for doing all of 1 thing as well as 2 new badges (one of which requires doing basically everything else of note). Its a remake, plain and simple, unless you can go in and find the OG source code 100% untampered in there, you aren’t convincing me it’s a simple remaster. By the way, one of the unlockable concept arts, shown this remake was gonna originally have the thicker outlines of Color Splash and Origami King.

    • @Arkouchie
      @Arkouchie Місяць тому

      Yeah, the 30 fps is way overblown. 60 fps isn't necessary for a turn based game that leans on stylization as much as it does.

    Glad to hear that you are still enjoying actually playing the game even after doing a BB video on it. First review was a huge success, would love to hear more unscripted review content like this, where you can just say what your thinking without having to stress too much about how to fit it into a script.
    For someone who has aged along with the game, I almost sort of appreciate it running in 30fps instead of 60fps, as that makes the timing for guards and super guards just a few split seconds easier to perform, fractions of a second, but it counts and adds up. My fingers don't work like they used to, I'd have a much more difficult time if the game was running faster.
    Of course, there's other ways of working around that if they ran it at 60fps, but that'd require making changes to the battle flow and timing itself if they were to try to make it more accessible, and I don't think anyone would have wanted that.

    My biggest complaint is the text speed. They made it so much better in SMRPG, but then made it worse in this.
    Then, and this isn't really a complaint, more of a pet peeve, cut-scenes can only be skipped if you've already seen them once before. This doesn't apply to all cut-scenes, but for example: I failed one of the Glitz Pit challenges, so I had to redo that fight, but the second time around, I could skip the fight's intro. Tried it with the next fight, couldn't skip. It's actually the same for some text bubbles. For ones that get repeated a lot, like shops, you can mash through those, but the rest are a waiting game.

    • @squiddu
      @squiddu 4 місяці тому

      As far as I've seen, ANY dialogue that gets repeated can be skipped. Even stuff like your partner's quotes in the Glitz Pit.
      I wouldn't put it beyond them to add a text speed option. The settings page is absurdly bare right now

    One thing that bothers me somewhat about the game and don't get me wrong, I know it shouldn't, but the game is... too shiny/reflective. It reminds me of the early PS3 era, where bloom and reflections were overused to make them appeal more as next gen. I get it's all paper, but it looks like it's laminated at points.

    Pikmin 1 and 2 on switch is a remaster. The 3D Mario collection on switch is a remaster.
    This is a remake. New sprites, plenty of changes everywhere. Wind waker id also call a remake.
    Twilight princess is where you get really fuzzy.

    • @Mcl_Blue
      @Mcl_Blue 4 місяці тому

      Funny you bring up Wind Waker as an example of a remake, when that game was absolutely a remaster and not a remake. Same models, same textures, new shader, widescreen, minor quality of life changes and additions. Barely any new assets. Twilight Princess, since you mentioned it, is also a remaster, through and through, nothing fuzzy about it.

    Im a huge paper mario fan but i do have some gripes with this game:
    1. It didnt age that great, mostly the backtracking, yes, it is not so bad, but almost every chapter has some and specially the trouble center and while the pipe room helps aliviate some frustrarion, it would have been nice to have a workaround to pick more than 1 trouble at a time.
    2. Controversial take but i dont think the new sountrack is perfect. You can use the old one so its no big deal either.
    3. 30fps isnt a big deal but it is noticeable and hurts, more so for people who play on PC though. I got used to it after a few hours but thats the thing, took me a few hours to stop noticing it.
    All things considered its still a 9/10 game for me, those drawbacks arent enough to drag the game down, every chapter, chatacter and story bit is brilliant, it truly deserves to be played by any mario fan.

      So not knocking the use of emulators or anything, I can't remember who said it now, but whoever did say "If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing" in response to Ubisofts BS is a genius, but, something to consider with your 3rd point is that you ARE using an emulator and not the intended hardware. Your experiences will be different than others, and from the way it was intended to be, especially in areas like frame rate. That's just the nature of what an emulator is. I'd hope you were using a controller? I can't imagine trying to play this on a keyboard, those key presses would mess with action command timing so badly I'd think.
      The rest... I can see how someone can have gripes with that. But agreed, it's an incredible game, any drawbacks aren't enough to drag it down much. I was dreading chapter 4's backtracking and am glad to hear that is supposedly easier this time around, that was the point I'd have to put down the original version and take a break.

    • @johnmehlman5195
      @johnmehlman5195 4 місяці тому

      To atleast clear up 2 of your points, 1, alot of the backtracking has been removed, like with the treck from creepy steeple to twilight town, theres now a pipe that links creepy steeple and twilight town now, eliminating the unnecesary backtracking from chapter 4, aswell as the pipe room in rogueport sewers helps shorten the backtracking for general white, also theres a gamecube badge that switches the soundtrack to the og

      @@onwardparasites2644 oh no, I meant that I play PC games, so I'm used to play games at 120 fps or more. So going back to the switch to play the game hurts, that what I meant. Not to say that I haven't emulated the game, but the 60fps mod isn't optimized yet, it makes the game crash at points, so I'm playing on my switch.

    • @onwardparasites2644
      @onwardparasites2644 4 місяці тому

      @@ICharlyl Ahhh! I see! I do at least appreciate how it's a seemingly consistent framerate, I think I've only notice some slowdown in one or two scenes.
      Switching between the two would definitely be jarring, bet that messed with your muscle memory. It's really evident when your talking about a difference of a hundred frames per second. And I'm definitely not knocking emulators, I personally am just a bit of a hardware purist, if at all possible, I want that original controller and cartridge, so I can capture that original feeling and immersion.
      I was a bit disappointed to not see a hard difficulty added to the game.

      @kirotarakai 4 місяці тому

      It may be free for you, but for anyone who does not own the original game and console, it can be very expensive. TTYD itself is rather pricey. In my eyes, making a truly great game even more accessible is only a good thing.
      In addition, this is far from the same game. The textures have been redone, the lighting is far more beautiful, the music has been remade, and the text has been translated more faithfully. This remake may not look that impressive, but it is, and the effort that has been put into it should not be understated!
