2017 TAG Heuer Autavia Review: In-depth Watch Review

  • The Autavia, the legendary driver's chronograph from the sixties, is returning this year.
    A contraction of AUTomobile and AVIAtion, its name is synonymous with its rotating bezel, its large snailed counters and the exemplary legibility of its black and white. Created in 1962, this iconic model celebrates its 55th anniversary in the form of a neo-retro successor featuring updated functions and a proprietary movement.
    Modern yet faithful to its roots, the new generation Autavia channels the spirit of the golden age of motor racing. As innovative as the original, this contemporary model is the result of an interactive campaign called the "Autavia Cup" run in 2016: from a choice of 16 vintage models, more than 50,000 web users voted for a reissue of the Autavia "Rindt" worn by the famous F1 driver Jochen Rindt.
    Watchuseek takes a look at the 2017 version of the Autavia to see if it can hold its own against the classic Autavia of the past.
    Price for the TAG Heuer Autavia is $5,300 USD on stainless steel bracelet and $5,150 on brown leather strap.

    Great looking watch and I did have a couple of original Heuer Carreras so I am a Heuer fan. I really do not like the two and a half minute segments. The original had one minute segments, time is measured in minutes. Also 16mm is too high. I was looking forward to this one but unfortunately not for me.

    A little tired of the hate of this watch company from some.

    I love the Rindt connection, and IMO: The Heuer 02 is a very nice movement.

    Great review, and I think the aesthetic and the movement for the price are fantastic. The pushers in particular has a smooth but positive click to it. I only wish it was smaller, it felt like a big diver on the wrist

    One thing that I kind mentioned in passing that I should have talked about a little more is the power reserve of 80 hours. Quite a few mechanical watches have a power reserve of around 40 hours, so I think that the TAG Heuer-02 Calibre coming in a 80 hours is pretty cool!

    • @gmshadowtraders
      @gmshadowtraders 7 років тому +1

      Have you looked at the new Hamilton H10 movement in their Khaki automatic line? It's also an 80 hour power reserve. The main reason why I bought it and it fucking looks cool :) but yes well done Tag Heuer.

    • @sitkiewitz
      @sitkiewitz 7 років тому

      Thanks for the heads up, I haven't looked at the H10 movement. Hamilton is on the list to do a review. They have some very nice watches at a price you just can't beat!

    • @JK9977
      @JK9977 7 років тому +3

      I own a Hamilton Khaki Day Date myself. Hamilton achieves the 80 hour power reserve by lowering the beat rate from 4 to 3 Hz. I guess the way Swatch Group did it with the H30/Powermatic 80 is relatively easy compared to other movements with a higher power reserve such as this one.

    • @JDYTC

      A Leone The hate originated from the history of lies from TAG about how "Swiss" their movements were.

    • @aleone5685
      @aleone5685 7 років тому +8

      JD - Sure. I know they went through a bad stretch. But I think Biver helped to fix that, and today it's much better. However, if a Tag has an ETA movement, they seem to be criticized for it. If an Omega has an ETA it is frequently reviewed as a positive, easily serviced option.

    • @lewisjones3345
      @lewisjones3345 7 років тому +4

      A Leone part of the hate is just snobbery. I find that Tag Heuer makes some great watches that look great and perform, but some people need to put them down because they have the financial backing of LVMH and the advertising budget that goes with it. So for watch snobs, they think Tag has the fashion type presence of advertising not just a small watch company.

    • @bobfrombrisbane1831
      @bobfrombrisbane1831 6 років тому +1

      jigrodrigues Tag got caught passing watch movements which they said were in house but were in fact Seiko movements. They as a watch manufacture lost face with a lot of Watch enthusiasts. Also some of the Tags made in the 80s and 90s were shockers. The last few years they have tried to repair decades of damage.

    It's a beautiful looking watch, especially the dial. Very easy to read. Not thrilled about the case size at 42mm. 39-40mm, in my opinion, is perfect size. In my opinion. And from what I have been hearing, watch makers are starting to go smaller again. I recently purchased a Tudor Chrono Sport watch that has a 41mm and find that too chunky on the bracelet but when I switched to the leather strap, it was a whole different experience. Speaking of the strap, I like the look of the strap on the Heuer.

      An interesting story is that before the Autavia Cup even started, Jean-Claude Biver (who was running TAG Heuer at the time) said that if they reissue a Autavia that is would be in a larger size and in a round shape case, not the "C" shape case from the 70's. So from the get go the size was set. It will be interesting to see if they continue on with the Autavia line with different versions and perhaps different sizes.

    • @TheCriticalGentleman
      @TheCriticalGentleman 7 років тому +4

      @Matt Mitchell totally agree. That bezel makes it seem large just for the sake of being large. JCB says he won't do a fully authentic re-issue because it would make owners of the originals angry. Not sure where he is getting that. The originals will always be valuable. Evidently Omega does not share his opinion, as they just released 3 re-issues totally identical to the originals.

    #👍🏼 Nice review and watch, but.. Perhaps 20mm lug width & minute countdown bezel and minute register would have been better but this is probably due to no one at Heuer really wanting to make decisions hence the crowd sourcing design choice.

    16mm high/tall..? That alone killed it for me. Then there's the 21mm lug-to-lug; that prevents a lot of strap whoring. Then the lugs look like canine teeth... don't fit the watch and will make it difficult to wear for anyone with less the a 7" wrist. Looks nice, but the watch dimensions should never have passed in final reviews for production.

    I bought one a few months ago in February and love it.... but I just had to take it to my AD. The chronograph was not working correctly. When I would start the chrono the subdial minute register would tick over to show one minute had passed when the chrono seconds hand was only at about the 42 second mark on the main dial. Really strange. The watch is basically brand new so I must have gotten a bad one. The sales guy said he had never seen anything like that happen before. Anyone else ever heard of this? I hope I get it back soon...

  • @Pulsonar

    Nice watch and with no hideous TAG branding, but still not as beautiful as original 60s/70s models, why is it so hard to re-create the originals exactly and with at least a tachymetric bezel?? Is it just too perverse and antisocial to want exact re-editions?

    Needs to be about 13mm tall. 15.6mm tall/height is just NOT practical. It's easily doable to make a thinner chronograph (see Omega Speedmaster, Zenith El primero, Tudor Black Bay Chrono, Breitling Navitimer, etc.). This watch is already dated after one year release and can be purchased on Grey Market websites for 1/3 off.

      @dancarlton7973 7 років тому +2

      There's a certain Speedmaster with a similar-looking automatic movement with the date window at the 6:00 position but the Omega's chronograph movement is not the same as the Autavia's. One example is Omega's cal. 3330 has the hour subdial at the 6: 00 instead of the sweep seconds from the Heuer.

    • @8AP1
      @8AP1 6 років тому

      The 3-6-9 chrono layout has been around well before the speedmaster. I can't recall the name of the brand, but pretty sure the moon watch design was a ripped off from another watch too.
