TAG Heuer is no question one of the leading watch brands in the world when it comes to popularity. With a wide range of products and expansive distribution, this should be no surprise, however, when it comes to the world of watch enthusiasts, they can be polarizing. In this video, though we look at one of my favorite TAG Heuer watches and share why I think it a winning formula the brand should revisit more in the future.

I don’t know why Tag got so much hate a few years ago. It’s got a great history and is making great looking watches. Love the Autavia. Thanks, Teddy.
this is gonna be the buy of the century if you can get this under 5k when people see Heuer in a different light again
Offering $2000 to $3000 watch with ETA quartz movement wont give your brand value or respect
@@roberta.6579 Yeah but it's not like Omega didn't do that and they always get away with it. Why?
Buy a tag chrono with the calibre 16, they’re all over the place for dirt cheap and are absolutely bulletproof.
Happy to own this as a heuer, reverse panda dial, hardcore F1 fan. The original Autavia “Rindt”was in Ford v Ferrari for those that noticed it (worn by Christian Bale)
Great video! I got an ex-display model (with bracelet and strap included) during lockdown for 49% off RRP - I absolutely love it and I wear it more than anything else I own. It’s worth pointing out that these watches weren’t a sales success at all, and production ended in Spring 2019. Anything you see left for sale is remaining stock. Also, the very earliest references from the first production batch (like mine) have a bizarre subdial with 2.5 minute increments - the one in the video is the “fixed” dial with 1 minute increments they released shortly after launch.
Congrats, nice watch. Like I posted earlier I tried one on during vaca last year, was tempted, but would've had to sell my only 2 watches that were worth anything to get it. I stll question my decision. Hope you wear and enjoy yours in good health.
I just bought the updated dial model. Picking up today. After learning of it being discontinued, I had to get it!
@@alectang1614 hope you enjoy it as much I do!
Teddy DISGUISES the clear profile view, showing the 6-/12 o’clock profile with the strap in the way, and the 3-/9-o’clock profile with your FINGER IN THE WAY, after fzirst holding it at a tilted angle SEMI-profile that HIDES THE THICKNESS. YOU FRAUDSTER, LIAR, major deception-spinster. GET OFF THE UA-cam, Teddy JERK!
you should see a therapist
absolutely gorgeous. I've had this watch on my "attainable grails" list for a while.
That is an interesting way to call it.. I will rename my pinterest folder to “Attainable Grails” from now on in homage to you
Same here, sadly still attainable only lol
I’ve found one that’s new old stock at a discount if anybody is interested…
Thats a beautiful watch. Many of the watch vloggers recently have been showcasing the new Carerra models. Lately I have been obsessing over the Chopard Mille Miglia collection and their connection to the legendary race in Italy.
Tag has been doing a nice job for the last 10 years. I think Watch Snobs hate that Tag did a better job with marketing than most watch brands in the 90s and got more attention than brands that are considered more prestigious which is no fault of their own. For the past 10 years, they have channeled their past and developed good pieces at the same time that it has developed their own movements. A lot of my friends that are into watches started their collection journeys with Tags, which is same for me. I am currently into all things Omega, Tudor and Grand Seiko but I proudly wear my Tag Watches and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Hands down when a reviewer doesn’t hate TAG. Gorgeous watch by the way. 🙌🏻
I bought mine several months ago. I shortly bought the beads of rice bracelet. This is an eye catching, conversation starter. But more importantly, it’s +4 second day piece. And with an 8 inch wrist, it doesn’t feel “too big” at all.
And I love pointing out it’s in house movement to the Tag haters who assume it’s an ETA.
And best of all, I lived near the Nürbugring as kid. The Heuer logo was EVERYWHERE. So it is a very deja vu feeling each time I look at the face. This, along with my Aquaracer 500m, are definite keepers.
Thanks for a fine review.
gynechiatrist , I’m a 7.5 wrist, and on the leather band I had to use the last hole
Do you wear it on the bracelet more often or do you put it on rubber or leather? I have fallen in love with this thing in the past 48 hours and think I might pick up the black model but I can see wearing it on a curved rubber strap. Such a nice piece and from a brand I have not owned before... ( fell in love with watches when I was about 22 and my boss gave me a tag chronograph which I later found out was a replica! 😮 Schmuck!)
Picked up one of these early 2020, have worn it almost everyday and never get bored with it. Super comfortable and the leather breaks in beautifully.
Hey Teddy
Can u please make a review about the longines dolcevita automatic and maybe a comparison with Cartier americaine?
Thanks for the constant great content
Yes, I can add them to the list
@@TeddyBaldassarre Awesome! I would love to see more Cartier too! They are really so underrated. In terms of styling, they are so hard to beat!
Teddy, can you please invent a way of my wife not seeing that review if you do it ? It may be quite expensive 😀
TH did a good job with this one! It's a bit too thick for my taste. Definitely appreciate that "Tag" doesn't show up anywhere except on the backside, not even on the buckle. Nice panda dial, and a good value for a column wheel chrono movement.
The one to get is the carrera 160 reissue though, that one is a gem!
Excellent review Teddy. I bought the exact same 2017 Autavia earlier this year, and I just love its classic looks and related history. Last month it only gained 12 seconds, so the Heuer 02 is a very accurate movement. I purchased mine second hand in as new condition saving a lot of money, and according to Chrono24 it's worth about $500 more than when I bought it so I'm more than happy.
Crazy, when I saw this video a few days back I remember thinking how beautiful the watch is. Today I walked by the display counter and glanced at one under the glass. I tried it on, it felt nice, I inquired about any special deals. They did indeed want to make deals. Long story short, thanks for putting this on my radar, it is now my newest watch!
Same 😄
@@buymac Congrats! Im really enjoying mine
That model is on my wishlist. The dial layout is perfect and the 80hr PR is nice.
Looks amazing. And it’s not as slab sided and thick as the Tudor GMT and BB chrono.
I'm neutral: quite good looking in isolation, it becomes bloated in the real world. I'll stay with my vintage chronographs.
I agree. It looks too similar to other watches, just lots of watches. Not classic. Can't see it go down history as a great choice.
Beautiful watch but on the larger side in my opinion. Get it down to 41mm max, with 20mm lugs, and no thicker than 14mm and we have a real homerun.
Thank you for another great video Teddy. I've been blessed with the opportunity to have some very nice watches. At the similar price point as the Tag Heuer Autavia Chronograph. Recently, I was at my local AD to pick up a watch that had just come back from service and was presented with an opportunity to purchase this watch with the stainless steel band at a substantial discount since it had been discontinued. Upon seeing the watch. I have a pit in my stomach. From my early years in the 1970's, and going to the jeweler's with my parents to pick out a nice watch for my birthday. I saw the Autavia Chronograph and upon seeing the price at that time, which was equal to about 3 weeks of my father's paycheck, it was obvious that was not a reasonable option. Naturally, I was disappointed and the jeweler presented us with a nice, affordable manual wind LeJour Chronograph, which I still have. So, naturally, when I was presented with the opportunity to buy the Autavia Chronograph, especially at such a discount, I bought the watch. While it is not COSC certified, it performs to that standard. I am rather sorry to see the watch discontinued. I am sure that Tag has it's reasons, but is is sad to see such a tremendous, historic watch discontinued. While I have other high end watches, none is as satisfying to wear as my Heuer Autavia 02 Chronograph.
No mention about the fact 2 subdials would have been better in lay-out & practice as 90% of all chronograph measurements last less than 30 minutes
Well Heuer might bring out a 2 dial version as " 50 years Jo Siffert " in honor of Swiss racing driver Joseph Siffert who died in October 1971 !
Grail watch for me. Nothing more stunning than the black dial with three white subdials.
I just bought this watch this weekend, I love it. I had the original 6 years and sold it to someone in Japan for 3k, what huge regret. I’m glad they choose this watch to reissue.
Its as close to the original without getting a original. Isnt 3k a bit cheap for a original?
@@lordbogus6709 I sold it six years ago, prices went up
It's endorsed by mega entertainer in India... If I wear a tag heuer I'll be more respected as compared to patek 😜
I’m sure you’ll get the call from them soon !
Thanks for a detailed review. I purchased this recently and it has quickly become my favorite in my collection. The aesthetic is spot on, in my view, if you are interested in a vintage style.
Tag Heuer is a great entry to Luxury watch world
Used, yes.
A new one will drop 50% of the retail value.
I don't believe there's anything luxurious about Tag Heuer, them watches look like the branded stuff you get when you buy that BMW, cheapie ballpoint pen, an umbrella maybe and thrown in, the watch that's just shiny all around. Now this watch, that bezel is just so plain ugly. It's like they didn't have one with a proper tachymeter and they used whatever spare part there was available.
Absolutely not, longines for dress watch and tudor for sport watch is an awesome entry to luxury watch
Horses for courses, fellas. Personally I love the aesthetic
@@tecnogadget2 and sometimes you want to be the first person to own something and you buy it without intent to flip it :)
Great in depth review, the Cal 02 Autavia panda dial is a winner. Recently got an opportunity to pickup the Hodinkee `Orange Boy' version. Mint preowned, this Autavia 02 is my grail watch. As far as chronos go this ones really hard to top. So happy!
Is it me or am I the only one thinking this is a cheaper Tudor Black Bay chrono? Both water resistant, Sport and racing chronos, both panda's, both a date. But this one has a real in-house caliber which you can actually see with nice finishing and the watch has a better, overall more unified design language. Also, it can time up to 12 hours, so more functionality.
Personaly, this over the Tudor BB chrono as Heuer has way better history
Tag has been knocking out of the park with their most modern models from 2012 and onwards. Watch snobs just continue to rag on it because its popular and they are still living in the past, 90's-00's, where Tag was pumping out admittedly overpriced watches. Not the case anymore. Their caliber 5 Aquaracers are legit pieces now worth their price tags. Sadly these watch snobs still think its 2005.
Yup
it would be funny if you and archibold Chesterfield the third made a video together I remember watching the live stream with you and Archie and I was crying laughing and wasn't bored the whole video 😂
@@kaisoerfjord6794 interesting....... but what would be the point in him lying about the thickness of a watch lol 😎👍
Also might add watch Le Mans 66, as Tag Heuer supplied original Heuer watches to the main characters of Carroll Shelby (Carrera) and Ken Miles (Autavia).
I really like this piece, as well as the new Carrera...and the Calibre 11 Monaco. I'm a huge fan of the mid-sixties/early-seventies Heuer and these are as close as I seem to be able to get to those "holy grail" vintage pieces.
@@kaisoerfjord6794 You sound upset, man. I recommend talking to someone about it. A therapist, perhaps?
5000 dollars? Never gonna happen, rather spend that money on an Omega or Tudor
Yep totally 👌
Omega? I bought 2 and I can tell you they are way overpriced…
Thanks Teddy! You really got my attention. I'm dreaming of the Monaco, but I have to say this Autavia is gorgeous. I'll definitely check it out!
Gorgeous, but I would want the 3 "big" hands to have a better finishing and attention to detail. They look a bit crude, like taken from a Vostok Komandirskie. They seem to be true to style from the old one, but I would have hoped for a bit more depth in the hands with nicer finish. Also the 12 hour bezel doesnt really make sense to me, what is it supposed to be used for?
15.5MM THICK!?!?! I'd like to see watch companies return to making thinner watches again.
Nice watch, but the thickness is ridiculous. It's as if Tag didn't even TRY to keep it thinner.
It wears really well on the wrist. A lot of the bulk is on the caseback. My Tudor GMT feels like it wears thicker
I don't think Autavia can really be argued with, fantastic line from Tag. I feel like the issue the watch world has is with the F1 line, especially the quartz versions.
Which is still rediculous, all brands have entry level watches, 1 - what's wrong with quartz? 2 what's wrong with the F1 line? People just need something to complain about
@@joshsmith7812 you'd have to ask someone else, I'm a fan and I have two myself
Nice watch. I'd love to see a reissue of the 1163 viceroy, one of favorite ever chronographs
It's beatiful but too big for your wrist. As it would be for mine.
As for tag Heuer, I wish they'd drop the "Tag"
Why would anybody buy this when you could have a speed master, why why why why ?????????
Not everyone wants a Mercedes.
Hard to get around this fact, this brand is so full of rusted heritage, nothing particularly aspirational or exclusive about TH.
Thanks for bringing the TAG HEUER AUTAVIA to my attention. I never would consider a TAG because of their mass appeal but this is different.
@@kaisoerfjord6794 he says 15mm at 5 minutes and a pretty good side profile at 5min 30sec. I'm a sucker for the panda and reverse panda. Granted he did not point out the bulging case back. I had a world timer with a very convex back that was uncomfortable for me and I gave it to my mother, she wears it every single day. Now I'm envious of it and wonder if I would get used to it. Maybe he is like my mother and the bulging bubble back doesn't feel like an egg on Teddy's wrist. Why would he lie. Money? Maybe. I'm sure some of my watches are uncomfortable but if it like them I subconsciously ignore it.
Tag Heuer has definitely been releasing some well thought out designs as of late.
I own the original 1966 Autavia Heuer 2446 3rd Execution "Jochen Rindt". Absolutely gorgeous watch.
It's a nice watch but a real thick cheeseburger
Hey Teddy. Im currently in search of my very first Swiss watch and I stumbled upon your channel and it's been amazing.
I've always wanted a Tag Heuer Carrera Three Hands Blue Dial and just curious what you think about the Carerra series in general. Are they value for money, or just for the brand name?
Longines Master Moonphase Chronograph Silver dial and Tudor Black Bay Steel are also in my Top 3 list
Apart from the great review...
Teddy, that Jacket is fire! What brand is it?
It’s from
Taylor stitch 👍🏻
@P M B 🤣
Very tasteful review. This Autavia is certainly very stylish looking
Why do watch brands produce case size that are not wearable. At 42 mm case and 15 mm thickness, no way this will fit well on my 6-1/2” wrist size. If they could drop to 39mm case and 12mm thickness like BB58 then only any brand can compete well in today’s market.
I totaly agree with you. TAG are finally on to something with the caliber 02 movement. But it is in the 11th hour, the management or the people who drained the brand walues maybe got to a insight that they blowing it for them self. So close to a free fall. Monaco can't save them every "time".
Possibly one of the best modern Tag Heuers - it's a shame it looks like they've discontinued it now, but hopefully, it makes a comeback. I've been on the fence with this so many times just because of the thickness, but the overall design & that movement really are amazing.
Was wondering that. It disappears from the TAG website and no one says anything.
Same. One mm less on the height and I would have purchased
I have always liked Tag, that would be a great addition for me. I just haven't had access to them like I used to. Great reviews Teddy, keep it up.
Doesn't Tag Heuer have any no date window watches?? Every model I see has a date 📅
Whats your opinion on Tag Heuer Grand Carrera 36 RS Calibre? It's one of the most gorgeous watches in my opinion, specially with Red and Black leather strap.
Huge fan of these TAG Heuer Chronos. I own a Heuer Carrera Calibre 18 and love it. I think it has the best dimensions overall and is closer to the 60's/70's style, "Heuer" Chronos. These watches best represent the golden era of motor racing IMO. Good review!
This really is a great piece in terms of quality for price. There is some noticeable rotor wobble but it is not as pronounced as it is in some other TH models.
Could you make a review for Junghans meister mega gold one? I want to know about mega technology
Hey Teddy! I am trying to decide between a Tag Heuer formula one chrono and the Longine Hydroquest chrono. Any suggestions? WhAt would you prefer?
Nice one, but way too thick. Is it only because of the automatic module or brands just do not care, "cause it's chrono, it must be thick"
How come Daytona or even el
primero can be noticeably thinner? Technical superiority?
a giant stainless steel brick. sorry. looks beautiful, but those dimensions simply kill it. just another attempt to appease and target the big watch trends. (does invicta make something that looks like this? I can get that for less way less money and feel the same way when it's on the wrist). sadly for me, every attractive watch from Heur is just too damn big and I can't see the point. I'll pass.
I have a Tag Heuer Caliber 5 Carrera (WV2111b-3) and a Caliber 16 chrono (the blue one that came out in 2018) and love them both. The Caliber 5 one is a dressier one for me, pretty subtle. That watch's bracelet is one of my favorite over all my watches, very comfortable plus the watch isn't very showy. I really like the dial of the Caliber 16 but find the watch is a bit thick. I find Tag's offer a lot of value for the money.
Hi Teddy, do you recommend this over the glassbox carrera? I saw this one at the boutique for 40%off..
hey teddy, i loved your videos and i am big fan of your channel.. i would love to see your review about tag heuer aquaracer 200 meter and new carerra just date model… i am looking forward to buy my first automatic watch and i am looking forward to your review these 2 new models… thank you
Lug 2 lug is too large. Thickness is too... well just crazy
I always thought TAG made good watches. Why are people disliking the watch maker?
After 3 years the chronometer stopped working. Here is the manufacturing mechanism...
Beautiful watch, and I came close to buying it several times. In the end, its too thick for my liking. My limit is 15 mm tall for a non-diver. The design otherwise, the strap too, is incredible. I find it way more interesting than the new Carrera models.
Omitting 'TAG' on the dial makes any TAG Heuer watch at least 50% better.
What do you think of the Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 (Blue dial) with the brown leather strap?
It is my favorite model from them and has been for about 3 years. Even the original was/is an awesome watch.
I love it. First time I have wanted a watch from this brand in my life. But ownership of the black model is eminent !
I bought a 2116 white dial version of this, with a rice bracelet and absolutely love it.
Hi ted I can find carrera 02 watch band size.if u know watch band size pls let me know ty.i cant find website
The three most know brand’s imo Seiko, Rolex,Casio. Tag and omega are 4 and 5.
The Autavia, it looks ok but IT'S MASSIVE.
Teddy has a slender wrist and fits pretty good.
Why from a design perspective would they give the watch the camel leather band not a black crocodile leather to match the face, it genuinely irritates me and is the only thing that ruins a gorgeous piece
Even biver dont wear this junk.. but cashing on it and buy patek LOL
These stupid commercial WTF. Very freaking minute.
Great review! And awesome jacket, where did you get it?
I pulled the trigger, waiting for the responses (2023).
Great review!! I bought the Heuer 85th anniversary 2 years ago as a pre-owned at a very attractive price. 💖 it since day 1. Couple days ago in Jackroad in Tokyo stumbled into this 02 (in rice bracelet) and couldn’t take my eyes off it. Capitalised the chance of weak Yen and made it my second Autavia. Still too good to be true I now have a pair of these classic panda that each having its own unique heritage and beauty!
I do have a soft spot for Tag and I have an original Formula 1 from the 90s and a modern Formula 1 as well 😎
Not a huge fan of Hyde park jewelers in Phoenix. They basically ignored me and didn’t bother having any conversations with me even though the store was empy and I asked to see watches and talked about potentially purchasing a Rolex . I’m 17 and assuming that is why but it doesn’t matter. I have the money they should have treated me with respect.
Big fan of this watch though and great review
Just got a tag Heuer wk1113 watch from my dad, opinions?
I’ve got a TAG WK2117; I believe it’s a lot like yours but an automatic (ETA 2824 movement). I bought it new in ‘04...it’s been a great watch. Pricy for what I got, though. It was my first “nice” watch & I didn’t really know anything...
WOW! I’m not normally a huge fan of Tag’s designs, but that’s really gorgeous
Yea, this is quite stunning. Glad to see Tag Heuer going back into the old catalogs much like Longines has. It works well. Great video Teddy!
Is there any place to see all models by tag heuer between 1970-1980 ? Im searching for a tag heuer watch that is from that time period that almost look like this with a darker brown straps, limited edition with glass back/bottom chronograph.
Please review Cuervos y Sobrinos!!
enthusiast always like the same watches and those were all mass cloned by those cheap chinese made watches....
Hello teddy. love your stuff. could you get your hands on a JLC Master Sector dial. Trying to buy my partner one but can't find and need more information from experts I trust. dream watch for my man. such a beautiful watch but is it limited edition?
They were made for only one year so whilst they're not strictly limited edition, they were produced only for around a year. If you see one, you should get it as they're quite hard to find these days.
2.800 USD for a pre-owned sounds much better to me than 5.000 for a new one. I rather would buy a Breitling Superocean for that money or save some bucks until you can afford an Omega Speedmaster - Speedy Tuesday.
I think snobs expect Patek or Rolex quality, from Tag, but they don't quite understand, that they aren't on the same price bracket as Rolex, Patek, AP, etc But for their price, they are amazing
Rolex and Patek aren't in the same price bracket either lol, you cant compare them, Rolex makes nice watches, they hold their value, but they're in all honesty nothing special, their movements are nothing to write home about either. Rolex has quality, but it's not really anything above tag heuers higher end offerings anyway :/
@@joshsmith7812 I agree, rolex and patek aren't on the same league, but people still expect that kind of product out of a Tag Heuer
I’ve been aware of this watch for a few years. I found a new old stock and pulled the trigger. This video put me over the top to just grab one.
HI Teddy, I am fan of your channel. And i had some question regarding selecting my next watch, I have been trying to contact you via gmail and live chat(ur shopping website). Please respond ASAP.
Back in 1976 my Dad bought me the Heuer Autavia Viseroy for High School Graduation. The past 46 year and 25,000 hour of flight time I have worn this watch. A few years ago I shipped it back to Heuer and they went through the whole watch. I now also own the new TAG Heuer Autavia. These are great watches.
On the Carrera the case thickness is more obvious as it is slab sided. By the way, one thing that wasn’t mentioned is the rotor noise of this calibre. I noticed this with Cartier watches too, even the latest £6000 Santos has quite a bit of rotor noise
A brand beloved by builders and their wives, Tracy.
I have the same Taylor Stitch jacket 😂🙏♥️🔥
Hi Teddy, do you still recommend this watch in 2023? I’m planning to purchase one in my AD. Thanks..
I bought it back then, and I still love it! incredible watch.
I’m on you page on this !
Nice video mate
I bought this watch and had 3 issues:
1) the stop watch didn’t work
2) the watch band is on the shorter length, I have a 7.5 wrist and had to use the last hole
3) it is thick, really thick, I can’t see why it had to be this thick. Will not slide under cuff
4) I had to return it. It is a beautiful watch.
I really would like if Tag heuer did a watch with a no date window. The only 1 I ever seen was the Tag Heuer carrera calibre 1 WV3010 manual wind special edition which I like but there isn't a lot of information on it
This really doesn't feel like a reissue. The design is timeless.
I was leaning towards a speedmaster for the chrono look but stumbled upon the latest carrera sports chrono...instantly fell in love with it. Design, features and price seem about hitting the sweet spot...what do you think in terms of brand recognition in the long term?
Such a cool Orca, such a trashy brachelet they offer for it....
