Hi Angelica, Greek here:) north Macedonia actually is a country in and of itself, and south Macedonia is not another name for the entirety of the country of Greece. Greece is split into seven different geographic regions (think of it like the states but they don’t completely operate separately, like the laws all apply the same everywhere) and Macedonia is one of them (it’s actually the one I’m living as well!) so Macedonia as a geographic region is right below the country of north Macedonia, but it’s not really a separate thing, if that makes sense.

So with Ireland, the South is the Republic of Ireland and it is an independent nation. Northern Ireland is still part of the UK. The reason for the partition of the Island is that there was a greater proportion of Protestants (who were the over all minority) in the North East of the Island. Before the Irish war of independence the Protestant minority were the ruling class on the Island and for centuries had discriminated against Catholics. They opposed Irish independence for economic reasons but also because they feared being discriminated against if the Catholic majority took power. After the island was partitioned, Northern Ireland became a country within the UK with a protestant majority. They continued to discriminate against and disenfranchise Catholics. This gave rise to a Catholic civil rights movement in the 1960's inspired by Martin Luther King's activism. The government's violent response to the Civil Rights marches and demonstrations, along with attacks on Catholic neighbourhoods by Protestant paramilitary groups lead to a resurgence of the IRA. This in turn kicked off a 40 year period of tit for tat murders and terrorist attacks between Catholic and Protestant paramilitary groups known as the troubles.

Indeed, there is a lot of contention about Macedonia! The historical kingdom of Macedon (of Alexander The Great fame) was located roughly in regions now part of northern Greece and North Macedonia. Despite the fact that the Greek city states were conquered by Macedon, modern Greeks proudly lay claim to the legacy of Alexander and his kingdom, while people who do not consider themselves "Greek" and yet live in lands of historical Macedon too have their own connections...hence the issue! The many modern (think the past couple of centuries) contentions in the Balkan region, often arising from powerful European nations imposing state borders in multi-ethnic regions in the period since the end of WWI, are why the term Balkanization came into being. P.S. The conquering kingdom of Macedon was what became the "empire, not "Greece" itself. The individual city states of Greece had a notion of shared civilization but otherwise were quite separate (until conquered, of course!).

Ha, brilliant. I'm glad you love Ireland. Just don't say the south is Protestant and the north Catholic, definitely nope. You should do some research on the troubles in Northern Ireland (my childhood in the 90s) and how the UK works. It would definitely something you would be interested in and there are some decent documentaries on both topics, especially the six counties. I could see you becoming, um, let's just say passionate about that subject. Spain is very beautiful, I especially love northern Spain around Asturias and the Camino route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. If I didn't know better just from looking at you at first glance I would say you were Spanish yourself. You look very much like many Spanish women I know. Italy is gorgeous as well. You could spend a lifetime absorbing the art and history there and still not see everything it has to offer. As for the French, yeah. It can be a very odd place though rural France and places like Monet's garden in Giverny are very beautiful. In their defence that attitude and moral corruption comes more from Paris and their urban elite class, much like a lot of bad things with the UK comes from London. The working class and rural people have more common sense. I also respect their belligerent attitude towards authority and their own government as was seen recently with the protests against the neo-liberal "pension reforms". You should set off on a Grand Tour some time, see the world.
@@michaelterrell5061 The Republic is majority Catholic and the North was mixed with a declining Protestant majority. The real conflict was between Irish Nationalism/Republicanism (those who wanted NI to join the Republic and create a united Ireland) and Unionism/Loyalism (those who wanted NI to remain part of the UK and loyal to the crown). It mostly split along religious lines with Nationalists/Republicans being Catholic and Unionists/Loyalists being Protestant, hence sectarianism. What started the troubles was really the ethnic, political and economic discrimination Catholics faced in NI as it was Protestant/Unionist controlled. There were civil rights marches (partly inspired by MLK in the US and that my grandparents took part in), a violent establishment Unionist and UK government reaction, the reaction to the reaction followed by a descent into 30 years of chaos. It can be hard to explain to people not from here. All this vastly oversimplifies a complex situation. It's may be useful to study and compare to social situations of civil conflicts like that building in the US today. I still know little about the other half of the small town I live in and always found it strange when first visiting other countries where towns weren't divided and you could safely go anywhere.

“welcome to bangkok” when she mentioned Björk 😭 SHE KNOWSSSS LMFAO
In the middle between Swiss and Austria there is the tiny country Lichtenstein and between Germany, France and Belgium there is also Luxembourg
My dear, from the coast of Portugal you can see NY, not Florida. Madrid and NY are on the same parallel.
Nice one. I’m from Scotland and I like that she didn’t just say the United Kingdom but she forgot wales.
Are you kidding?
Republic of Ireland is Catholic. Northern Ireland is protestant and Catholic. England is known as united Kingdom which includes england scotland wales and Northern Ireland. Republic of Ireland fought for its independence and won.
Poor Luxembourgs, not being mentioned
We do in fact not have polar bears in northern europe, Svaldbard does, but that’s kinda just barely not the north pole at that point
Oh! I want to visit Svaldbard!!
As a Swedish person, I have my school education and Eurovision to help me with this, although I whispered some countries names in Swedish while Angelica said them in English.
so relatable I also learned all the flags from eurovision 😂
Balkans: "A little bit of tension right there..."
15:39 is 'Like real people do '- Hozier. I recognized this song immediately, love it.
Wales is absolutely a country!
I'm Sardinian and yes: In Sardinia we have the longest longevity with Japan!

Christian bale is actually English, both his parents are English and bale has even stated himself "I was born in Wales but I'm not Welsh-I'm English..
8:48 heavy metal comes from England, specifically Black Sabbath was the first metal band.
I love these cute South Park plushies 👍
Republic of Ireland is the catholic side of Ireland while Northern Ireland is still under English rule and is Protestant
Here are the small european countries you forgot
Monaco
San Marino
Luxembourg
Liechtenstein
Andorra
Cyprus
and some bigger
Russia (part of it)
Turkey (part of it)
nevertheless , good job for a non european ....
Russia os European. Not only part
@@Anonymous-qj3sf the largest part of Russia (Siberia) is in Asia

@@Anonymous-qj3sf where a counties belongs is based in the current geographical location not on historic facts. Egypt is African country and Saudi Arabia is Asian although both are arabic counties. Canada and Argentina are American county although they were found by Europeans

Isn’t Ireland(north or south) generally be catholic regardless?
@@michaelterrell5061 Republic of Ireland is Catholic while Northern Ireland is mixed Catholic and Protestant.
Are you from england or scotland ? Just curious ha :)
god i love her so much
Wales is a country within the UK
Greetings from Slovenia! It's (south)central Europe, not eastern 😉
Noooo its eastern part of Balkan but okay
Historically eastern, yugo past denial won't change that.
too bad we're adopting you
Everyone in the west of Europe sees Slovenia as the start of Eastern Europe.
@@ilijastanosevic😂😂 you mean western? anyways slovenia is central europe
Wales is a country but not a sovereign nation. It is part of the United Kingdom as is Northern Ireland and Scotland.
I love watching this as an european
"itally a little boot oop- 💅"
As a German, I see this as an absolute Win but am unsure whether I can say that😂
Bosnia and Herzegovina is the official name of the country, but Herzegovina is often referred to as the southern part of the country- because of politics and the Dayton Accords
a kiss from portugal...you are the best
it seemed like you really enjoyed that austrian artist joke you made. which is understandable, but that was still very funny to me.
Thank you so much for the random czechoslovakian fact! Lots of love from Czech Republic! 😂❤️
Excuse me, I need to get at least one fact right today. Is it ok to still say Czech Republic or should I call it Czechia?
@@victorgomez4107Both means the same. One's just shorter.
Well the official name of the country is Česká Republika = Czech Republic, but we all here tend to call it Česko = Czechia, so it is in my opinion okay to call it this way 😊

Regarding the northern countries toothpaste tubes I can tell you that even in the most southern parts of Sweden you still get cheese in tubes (you also have regular cheese you can buy of course). There's also caviar that comes in tubes that isn't the same as regular caviar. It's good though.
I don't know anything about whale blubber though, that might be an icelandic thing.
Also, I think it goes without saying but there are also no polar bears in Scandinavia :p
I mean technically there are. Svalbard has polar bears and it's part of scandinavia lol

I hate to be that girlie, but the protestant / Catholic thing here in Ireland is actually the other way around to the way u said it but it's okay ily Angelica
