  • Today we are making soap dough! Or rather, GeorgiaMae is. Because she's much better at all of the things than I will ever be.
    This is part one of a three part soap dough series, so make sure to check back tomorrow to see what the soaprentice makes with this soap dough! It will be epic, obvs.

    Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
    Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
    Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

    This is one of the most beautiful presentations I have ever seen on the web. I am following you from Croatia, Europe, and in my country, there are no workshops for such creations. I am so grateful to both of you, Mrs. Soap & Clay as well as Mrs. GeorgiaMae for your recipe as well as sharing your knowledge. With your presentations, you are really expanding this wonderful art far beyond the borders of your country. Thank you so much.

    This is great! My first batch was with my regular soap recipe, with tallow. Which, needless to say, didn’t turn out so great. It was surprisingly usable, with a lot of work and patience, but difficult. I didn’t have cocoa butter so I replaced the cocoa butter with Shea after checking the soap properties of both. I think it will work. (I’ll let you know). So I made an array of pinks, red, black (dark gray) and white for some Valentine’s Soaps. I love your videos! I’ve been making (plain-ish) soap for well over 15 years but I’m also an artist (paint, jewelry, etc) so now I’m seeing how I can make soap my art too! Georgia Mae is amazing. I hope I can do as well as she does. Thank you both for the videos! 💖

      You two are the absolute best! I love love watching you! And your soap is outstanding! I'm a soap maker myself but I have only been doing it for a year and I taught myself between UA-cam soaping 101 and thermal mermaid. I met and soap maker who had been making soap for 47 and she taught me a few things but I love to watch other soapmakers to try and see either where I went wrong or if I missed something. Your channel is fantastic and I watch it imceststlily your an excellent teacher!

    @Soap & Clay! Don't be so hard on yourself! If you create art you are an artist, just because someone else makes different or more impressive art does not mean that what you create is not art. If you have created something that causes emotion and human feeling than you have made art! I think that everyone should appreciate the art they create every day. Everyone watching this- you are an artist if you made something! it doesn't matter how "good" or "professional" that something is. Art is art! ♥

    Would this recipe work with cookie cutters making "soap sugar cookie" but instead of using colored icing using a medium traced CP soap as the icing?

      @@MrsSoapAndClayI’d like to learn how to make a bubble bath dough that can be sculpted or use with molds/cookie cutters that when dried holds its shape but then works as a dry bubble bath “cookie” for example is this how the ducks will perform or that’s different?? Thanks. Your brain is the best! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

    That’s it?? No dry ingredients? Nothing else besides some butters and oils?? And it holds its shape?? This is so cool cause I’d love to make stuff to wash with how does this lather? Guessing it’s not because no other stuff in it??? Is this soap though or just ok to use in the bath with soap??

    Can you add color later once it sets ?

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  2 роки тому

      Hey! You sure can! I tend to make my soap dough white and add colors to it as I need it. Takes a bit of extra work but I’m not left extra of an unwanted color that way.

    Questions!!
    1) If you have a specific purpose / embed you want to use the soap dough for, does fragrancing the soap dough batch positively or negatively affect the pliability of the dough? Neutral? Dependent on the fragrance? Avoid ones that have significant acceleration maybe?
    2) How does the cornstarch affect color? Notable lightening of any color? Negligible? None?
    UA-cam threw this video at me randomly and I have a couple projects in mind that would benefit from some soap doughs...

    Oh hi! I just saw this video of yours just now. I really wanted so much to make my own soap dough but I don’t have Avocado oil. What can I use in place of the Avocado oil? TIA for your soonest response. Your video was two years ago I don’t know if you are still active but I hope you’re still so that I can follow your instructions on how to make soap. Warm regards 🥰💗by the way, I’m your new subscriber now 🥰

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! I’m not sure on this one; I posted the recipe roughly 3 minutes in. I wanna say 5% superfat, and 2.4x lye for the water. :)

    Is there any remedy in case if any dough starts cracking or fine lines occurring?

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  3 роки тому +1

      The dough is cracking after it’s been formed into something? You can try a bit of glycerin and close the cracks. Have fun!

    Do you ever do soap dough projects with the kidlets? I'm thinking about making up a batch for my son and I to do a project together because I know he would dig it. And he has an ENTIRE DRAWER of play doh molds and extruders that I think might be handy. As a mom and a maker, is there any reason I shouldn't let my 7 year old use soap dough? I mean, it IS basically cured, and lye shouldn't be an issue, but I thought maybe I should run it by a more experienced soaper so I know if I'm being ignorant about something.

    • @MrsSoapAndClay
      @MrsSoapAndClay  4 роки тому +1

      Soap dough has fully gone through saponification and is safe for kiddos to use, for sure! And as an added bonus, it won’t taste any worse than play doh if the super littles put it in their mouth. 😂

    Hi. U didn’t tell 3 things. 1). How much SF? How much water as percentage of oils OR Lye Concentration? 3) temp while mixing lye into oils? 4). Did u go through gel phase? Any alternate of avocado oil? Avocado & rice bran r too much expensive in my country?

      The recipe is in the video about 2.5 minutes in. If you’re having trouble determining super fat and what not, plug it into soap calc and check out the specifics. To the rest, the video covers it! Have fun!
