I am so grateful to those who make the effort required to produce quality videos like this. I have been unable to travel for almost 20 years, yet I do not feel that I am missing out. A video like this allows me the opportunity to see what otherwise would be a closed book to me. Thank you Manuel.
No piece of media could convey how absolutely vast and breathtaking the inside of that building is. It's larger than modern-day airport terminals, except every square inch is beautified to the highest degree of human conception, and meticulously maintained. It is an architectural experience like no other.
Im not a religious person by any means but i was absolutely blown away visiting st peters. The engineering required and the architecture. To pull this off without modern machinery is mind blowing
This is the best architectural history video I have ever watched. You combine information of many kinds, about architecture but also about the individuals and their differing visions, and combine it with excellent visuals. The pace is just right: fast and packed with information that keeps your interest, but not too fast. I have visited St Peters and I have watched other videos, but today I learned many significant things I had never known before. Probably the most interesting is the fact that there are imperfections in the design and execution, clearly apparent once you point them out. So St Peter's is a magnificent achievement, but there is indeed room for it to be surpassed one day by something else.
my friend, you must be young. st peters is like Bach. or Mozart. or Michelangelo himself. they are of our history for ever and anon (forever to infinity). : )
i think this is the best video as well... it has much detail and covers everything with exceptional verve & brevity! it should get an award. clear and concise - the guy has the authentic and proficient Latin happening in spades - can't praise him enough for this one! and the photo excerpts a positive dream! most edifying!!!
One can't comprehend how vast is the space until you're in St. Peter's. It accomplishes the task of putting you in AWE. Of making you feel small. The letters in the frieze lining the top of the nave and round the dome may look just readable when you're down there but they are enormous! The statues look the right proportion at a distance, but again, when you come closer, you realize how big they are. Amazing building, whatever your religion is. A must see.
The enormous costs of the building made the sale of indulgences necessary and that pushed Luther over the edge and split the Catholic Church. Was it worth it?
It was built by the best architects and artists of the time and you see flaws? You have clealry never visited it in person. There are another 1000 churches in Italy with a similar architecture to Michelangelo original plan where the dome is not hidden, the Vatican is simply Unique.

A fascinating explanation of the building of St Peter's basilica. Even though I've been to Rome more than a dozen times, and visited the basilica every time, this video brought new insights to me. Brilliant.

I have visited The Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica a few times. It really is an amazing building. Larger than life and full of beauty. Everyone visiting spends their time looking up to the ceiling in amazement. It really is that big.
My mother was so facinated with this church, so we went there three times during three years to explore everything. The dome is absolutely stunning. And all the marble floors, all the pillars, it's all an amazing piece of craftsmanship.
Excellent video. The succession of architectural plans explains some of the quirks of the complex of buildings; I had not known of the changes in the planning from Greek to Latin cross prior to viewing this. I wonder what the building would have looked like if the Greek cross design had been retained!
I've been to Rome eight or ten times and, each time, visited the Vatican. Most of the churches in Italy have the Latin cross plan, the Santa Maria del fiore in Florence, mentioned as the inspiration for the dome is made with such design and the dome in not visible if you stand close to the facade! So, “ruined” is just a bit of a strong word and an artistic opinion, to which of course you are entitled!😊
For the non Italian speakers, the Latin wording on top of the altar makes more sense in Italian/Latin because Peter in Italian is Pietro which is almost identical to the Italian word for stone that is pietra! 🤓
Just a nerdy remark, but at 0:31 the last word in the Latin phrase is “Vinces” that is [with this sign you will] win, the end “ces” is pronounced like in chess not like in chemical as the voice in the video.
I cannot explain how amazing this video is! Im currently studying architecture conservation in Rome, i've been countless times to the vatican, received many classes about the Basilica on the Basilica, I have searched and watched a fair share of videos, podcasts, read a ton about the different elements within San Pietro, even a full on paper on the Cathedra Petri. Yet this video helped me connect everything and understand way better the architecture, history and art of the Basilica di San Pietro. I had already watched a few of your videos but this one made you my favorite channel 😁. Im exited to see whatever other videos you are working on! I have only one random question that maybe you can help me solve. On the main altar on top of the Catedra Petri within the entablature, more specifically the frieze there are some greek letters. Do you know why or what does it mean?
Thank you for your comment, I’m glad you found the video useful. To answer your question, in the left side of the frieze there is the Latin inscription “o pastor ecclesiae tu omnes Christi pascis agnos et oves” which means “oh church’s shepherd you feed all of Christ’s lambs and sheep” the text is from the gospel of John which was originally written in Greek, so to the right the same thing is written in Greek.

This was a fantastic video. Both of the amount and quality of the information you provide, and the way you provide it. It’s quite an achievement. Well done!
St. Peter was crucified upside down at one end of the Circus of Nero (he requested that he not be crucified upside right, as he did not believe he was worthy to die in the same manner as Christ). Because he was crucified upside down facing the center of the circus, he would have been looking up at an angle as he died. The last thing he saw would have been the top of that obelisk. That’s why it was moved to the center of St. Peter’s Square.

Just got back from Rome. And it was beautiful. Thank you for this video.
Thanks!
good camera, good work.
I visited Rome and the Vatican before but I wish I did it after watching these wonderful videos!
Guao chamo, tu manejo del inglés (e idiomas en general) es tremendo. Me encantó el video, porque esta construcción me atrae mucho: Es sencillamente majestuosa. Ya en espera de la versión en español
I'm a big fan of architectural history. Your video was one of the best I've ever seen. You efficiently and expertly gave us historical, political, and artistic perspectives that provided me a valuable sense of the big picture of St. Peter's. I'm not a huge fan of the religion, yet I admire the intention of the powers that be to create something meaningful, inspiring, and beautiful. I look forward to other videos from you. Thanks!
Grazie mille, Manuel! Once you have been to St. Peters you are never the same. This video is excellent, it chronicles the history of this miraculous basilica, it's clear and beautifully done. Bravo! Please keep producing such wonderful work. :-)
Enjoyed From The Caribbean 🇻🇨
Manuel...masterfully done! You have a wonderful manner of presenting your understanding of this majestic edifice. Thank you.
Great video. Thank you for sharing it. I was in Rome only a couple of months ago and I was amazed by St. Peter's Basilica.
The most beautiful building I could imagine, I hope to see it is in person someday.
you make the best videos man, keep it up for us plz!
I absolutely love to visit Rome and this video just highlights all the wonder and majesty of the place, thank you and keep up your amazing videos!!
This was a fantastic video. Both of the amount and quality of the information you provide, and the way you provide it. It’s quite an achievement. Well done!
Superb! Concise but complete and very approachable. Thank you very much.
I’ve visited St Peter’s and the architecture is awe inspiring. I appreciate the history of the site.
Thank you for sharing. I will be visiting the Vatican city early next year. Appreciate your great work.
As always, amazing content. Thank you for giving us such great detail into this subject.
I was in Vatican last year, and I never thought there are lot more stories behind the Basilica. Looking forward to come back soon.
Absolutely excellent! Makes you want to go to Rome!
The most concise video of spb's architecture i ever stumble upon to.
smartest move I ever made when visiting the Vatican ..hired a local guy with masters in art history to give us the tour.....cost a few hundred but I spent 10 grand getting there.!....would never have seen as much on my own. I recommend this to anyone going...same thing with the louve.....also hired a guy /driver to show me rome..best money i ever spent.
Fantastic! I loved every bit.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Having been to the Vatican, your explanations were amazing.
