  • The cathedral has been filled with art in the over 860-year history of Notre Dame de Paris. The churches were the very first museums and were happy to spend their money to teach the stories to the flock that couldn't read through art.
The day after the fire, we searched for updates on the church's interior. Luckily the night of, and the following days all of the treasures and art were removed from Notre Dame. Dodging the flames the paintings would suffer from the humidity and water that filled the nave.
In 2021, a deep restoration began on all 22 paintings taken from Notre Dame and today you can see them on display. In the Mobilier National until July 21 the Grands Décors Restaurés de Notre Dame de Paris exhibit is not to be missed.
For years before the fire, the paintings were covered in dirt, dust, and candle soot. The tragic event allowed them to restore them all at once and return them to us before they are rehung in the coming months.
Join me for a visit to the exhibit details on each piece and the stories of the restoration process.

Thanks for the tour! It's nice to see the paintings cleaned, well-lit and jewel-like in such uncrowded galleries. If I'm not misremembering, I recall that in their chapels in Notre Dame they were quite dirty, very dimly lit and only viewable from skewed angles. Here you realize that this is the apogee of French academic painting in Louis XIV's time and that they're very underappreciated.

You are correct, they were so dirty from years of dust, candle soot and and most hadn't been cleaned in over 50 years.

I agree with you about the liturgical furniture. I wish they would have made a replica of the high altar and more classic furniture to match it.

the high altar was already a 80 s design before the fire. Most of the original altar was destroyed in the XVII/XVIII century witht the reform of the liturgy
