- I went to the 'People's Question Time' to talk to the mayor about how London is besieged by a motorcycle crime epidemic.
People (often young kids) are stealing bikes, joyriding them, then breaking them down for parts or using them in the commission of further crimes. It's completely out of hand and I call upon the Mayor of London and the London Assembly to do something about it before more people get seriously hurt, whether that be setting up a task force, changing the penalties, training more officers in tactical pursuits or using bait bikes.

I work as a motorcycle delivery driver, and have been doing so for 3 years. I am quite shocked at the increase in violent crime that we have to face on a daily basis.
For example, in just the last two days we have had four instances where motorbikes carrying pillion passengers tried to steal our bikes, and one instance where the driver was pelted with BRICKS, and one instance where a female driver was chased by pillion motorcycles and took refuge in a residential house until Police could escort her to a safe zone.
And I am not talking about the East End. I am talking about Battersea and Wandsworth in the West End.
As a driver, I have become acutely aware of how teenage career criminals hunt us, and we are quickly adapting methods of escape and defence.
As I eat an ice-cream in the sunshine I feel edgy - looking around me, listening out for the sound of a bike - when you are a target, it is not possible to relax anymore.
Some drivers refuse to work at night - it is simply too dangerous. Police are loosing control of the streets.
There is only one solution. Nearly all bike crime and moped assisted mugging is carried out by TWO MEN ON A SCOOTER. If Police see TWO MEN on one bike driving pillion - they MUST stop and search them. Invariably they will be "tooled up", or even driving on a stollen bike.
So, identifying probable criminal activity is as simple as counting from 1 to 2. If Police see two men on a bike then STOP THEM AND GET THEIR IDs. Take a picture of them and of their bike.
If it is true that 200 criminals account for 90% of the motorcycle crime, then the police won't have to do this for long before the streets are clean again.

I've seen the police use bait cars in areas where car theft is a problem. What about bait mopeds? Get a bunch of random second hand mopeds. Put hidden trackers in them and put them in places where they're going to get nicked. Then follow the little scrotes back to their hovel, and send them to jail. Best part is, you grab the moped back and use it again!.
Hidden trackers and chlorine/mustard gas. Get the lot of them.

Ive seen 90% of this clips before, but I watched the whole video. I totally agree with you that it'll take an 'an easy to look at' pedestrian to be badly injured before anyone really takes any notice and even think of taking any sort of action. Bike thieves deserve much worse punishment, the majority only get a slap on the wrist and are let go

One of the reasons, there is so much bike crime is - the lack of Police, too much austerity. I work as a van driver, and some days I don't see a single Police car while I'm at work. The chances of getting caught is virtually zero !

Great video and right through my area too.Unfortunately it is going to take something drastic and serious as you mention to get the authorities to do something about this.A couple of weeks ago the Met Police in Morden tackled moped thieves with the front of their BMW and detained them.They had a great response from the public.Road rash dished out from the police should be standard consequences for anyone who nicks someone's pride and joy

Serious problem, I no longer live in London due to work, but as a West Ham fan I still go regularly to watch games. Straight up refuse to ride in London anymore, not worth it. Police gotta start cracking down serious!
2 scrotes stole my r1 2 weeks ago. I was lucky enough to find it with 30 mins before they stripped it. I spent 3 hours in kentish town.police station reporting it. I had photos of he boys and a registration.plate of the bike they were using which had not been reported stolen. After all this the police didn't have anyway to take my photos off my phone, and I was told the case would be closed as I didn't have enough info. There is no way that they had that resources to deal with my problem. My bike is a write off as they broke the steering lock and damaged the frame. 7k worth of bike. This fellow youtubers is why our insurance is so Expensive. Da police are I capable of running their own.stations let alone deal with crime. I was waiting 40 mins in the station before i was seen by an officer. they didnt ask what happened. no triage, no assessment. What else can I say but I cannot rely on.police to help victims of crime any more

Second bike I have had stolen, the second one I found being sold on ebay police have recovered it and are trying to give it back to the criminals due to id of the bikje issues ! Can you believe this!
I live in swindon (down the road from london) and it's rife with bike theives as well. I've had 2 mopeds stolen from my driveway in only a few months after getting each one. people on our biker page keep suggesting 'Bait Bikes' which I think is an excellent idea.
not only that but when they are caught they should EACH be made to pay a percentage back to all the bikers in the town/city that have had bikes stolen in the past. because if your bike is stolen and no one is apprehended, insurance company's won't pay out unless you file a fault claim! (which is dusgusting. why pay more for fire AND THEFT when it makes no difference when it does get stolen!) they should also be made to pay a fee back to theft victims in regards to insurance policy's going up due to all the thefts! they should be in debt until they've paid every penny they owe. even if they get made bankrupt. no jail terms, make them work to pay back what they take.
AND further more they should be made to pay another fee that covers people's travel costs when they find they're mode of transport has been stolen and now they have to take a bus or a taxi for however long until they sort other transport out! so anyone who's caught stealing a bike should immediately owe around 3-4000 GBP which should be paid back to victims of bike theft! they probably should do this for all vehicle theft. it would definitely make a would be theif think twice before taking property that's not theirs for one night of fun when it could result in their financial life being destroyed for a very long time! The only people to blame is the judiciary. Even if the Police do get them, the judges let them free to roam the streets on suspended sentences. No consequence breeds crime.

One of the reasons there is so much crime in the UK is because if you catch someone stealing from you or invading your home and confront them...and by any chance you get into a fight defending yourself....you will go to jail as well...you can be charged with assault and do more time than the person who tried to rob you...

I've had to use the motor insurance bureau for a Car crash I was in. I was in hospital for 3 months and had to learn to walk again. Now if I was paralysed and needed medical care for the rest of my life I would of had to find the money for that. The maximum the motor insurance bureau pays out is £150000. Some of you might think that's alot of money, but medical care is expensive and £150000 is not alot of cash.

There was a KTM 690 and a Piaggio parked up in a bay and they were reported to police a couple days ago. I saw them both being ridden two nights ago outside my house then again yesterday. They could have been retrieved by the police but they didn't bother.

This specific sort of moped crime has risen so much because the police said they won't chase criminals on motorbikes for safety reasons.

In the Netherlands this would be nipped in the bud within a week because of their super active motorcycle units. Despite not having a Moped issue, you still see on a regular basis Dutch Motor Cops patrolling bike lanes, or parked in a conspicuous place next to a busy shopping street or a popular park. The UK needs more British Motor Cops, because normal Police cars cannot chase these thugs into neighborhoods or project the same agile power as Dutch cops, which serves as a deterrent to the point that most people don't even feel like its worth it to boost the speed of their mopeds because one way or another they are caught eventually by a Motor Cop.

One would think so, but you actually see the opposite. It's called 'conflict escalation theory' and explains how cops carrying guns doesn't reduce crime, it actually makes the same crimes more violent. Because criminals are currently less inclined to bring guns (whereas now they don't need to - knives and angle grinders suffice) and therefore don't shoot people. When the cops all carry guns and shoot readily, the criminals carry guns and standoffs so often end in hails of bullets.
Notice how it's only countries with high gun ownership where you see simple traffic stops escalate to shoot-outs?

One small advantage you have living in America is you can choose to carry a gun in many states, excepting the states with the worse crime problems of course. Then only the criminals have guns because the local government makes nearly impossible for law abiding citizens to have one. And violent crime goes largely unchecked. There is a thing called mutual deterrence, a bad guy with a gun is much less likely to mess with a good guy with a gun. I live in Vermont where there are very few gun laws therefore very very little violent crime. An armed society is by nature a polite society.

Seriously look up violent crimes statistics for United States look up Vermont in particular, you may be surprised. You will see right away places with the most violent crimes also have the strictest gun laws. For example look up violent crimes statistics for Vermont then look up violent crime statistics for New York which has some of the strictest gun laws in the country it's almost impossible for a law-abiding citizen have a gun in New York, only criminals have them.

And again I must say that you have a distorted view of American Gun Culture as does most of the rest of the world. It's not at all surprising as there are many city's in the US with insanely violent gun crimes every day. I will state again these are in states with the most restrictive gun laws without exception, check the statistical data. For example you mentioned the beautiful state of Maine. Maine has almost no gun regulations for people with no criminal record or history of mental illness, just like Vermont and this is exactly why the crime is so much less in such places. States that abide by our constitution witch explicitly allows citizens to be armed have the least crime. States that break federal law and deny citizens their constitutional right to keep and bear arms are by far the most violent areas of the nation, therefore are the only places that the rest of the world hears about as far as guns are concerned. A good man with a gun is a citizen, a good man without a gun is a subject. That is what our constitution is all about. The way things are going we the people may well need our firearms in the fight against tyranny as our founders intended. Witch is exactly why the shadow government wants our weapons.

And we don't have a way to link it to migration, but a complete mix of low culture plus laws that doesn't punish them. And we have special military police to catch them, but at the final the court absolve them, and besides that every year we heard about a Word Healthy Org asking us to demilitarize our police. Message to Mayor Khan and the Police: An effective deterrent to bike thefts. In a chase, get your patrolling cops to paintball in Day-Glo red both the bike and the riders. Make sure the paint is very difficult to remove.

Police need to start setting traps & sting operations, with sort after tracked scooters that thieves usually go for to start actually catching these scum bags. Then the law needs to properly punish them with server prison sentences to send a message.

Hi there Sir, as I can see this kind of crime is increasing very high in UK. I live in São Paulo - Brazil, I got an Triumph and is ridiculous, but I gave up to use my bike here due to the crimes. Now I moved my bike to my parents home and use it only twice a month. And I can ensure you that's the things you captured on câmera is nothing near situation here. That's unbelievable and unacceptable that criminals can put everyone in risk. See you sir and wish all the best for all bikers here.
One way that I have found to be helpful is to put a D-Lock bicycle lock in the rear wheel.
Stops it from moving.
We pay more and more each year for CouncilTax (police tax included), but every year we see fewer and fewer police patrol down our streets... WHAT WE PAY FOR???
Yeah it's getting really bad in Manchester as well. A neighbours of ours found a machete tucked behind her front wall. Makes you wonder what that thing had been used for. Gulp.

The only gun was in the hands of a criminal. UK really needs to rethink their gun laws. That jewelry shop owner should have been able to defend his life and livelihood.
We have to legalise responsible gun ownership to waste these delinquents.

You guys, British people, are either too afraid or not care enough about these criminals. You guys just watch cowardly when some crime is happening in front of your eyes.
