JAMES TO KIRK CAPTAIN OF THE USS ENTERPRISE NCC-1701, YOU WILL BEAM YOURSELF ABOARD OUR SHIP AND ESCORT US TO SECTOR 001 WERE WE WILL BEGIN THE DISCOFYING OF YOUR CULTURE. RESISTANCE IS GROOVY!
Wow, seeing a reverse warp evasion depicted with a more modern take on VFX seems like it would be ridiculous but somehow it isn't at all. Plus, that OG music! Very well done!
ST - TOS l still think had the best and most unique background music of any TV show ever!! Lots of times even the very emotions of characters in various scenes were perfectly complemented by the musical choice. The soundtrack for this episode was definitely one of the best and was reused in allot of later episodes.
You are correct, sir! To borrow a Carly Simon trope it frankly makes me feel sad for all the Star Trek composers that came after Sol Kaplan and Fred Steiner. Kaplan and Steiner homaged the true giants of 20th Century Classical Music. The ones that came later were more derivative of the Romantic period. Too many strings doth a saccharine ST make. But I'm a Trumpet player, so all the brass hits me as just about perfect for the narrative of the show.
Is this canon? When Kirk says full reverse on the old TV show is the Enterprise actually traveling backwards or is an aft view? I think TNG shows aft view.
Magnificent remake to a classic "first-contact" episode! The Enterprise DID go in reverse, since the cube was approaching dangerously close to the ship. Only then did Captain Kirk order "Fire main phasers!", thus destroying the cube which exploded, sending out shock waves that shook the ship.
This is awesome...enterprise hauling ass in reverse. Never saw that on the show....but still awesome to see. Just goes to show the enterprise can bring it, anytime and anywhere, anyplace.
Anything that can (however briefly) bring back the sense of awe and wonder that I experienced as a ten-year-old upon discovering that show in after-school reruns (on a left-for-dead 13" hexagonal screen vacuum tube television that only picked up the one "blowtorch" TV station in my part of the South) is a great moment indeed. Thank you!
The nacelles themselves are not spinning it's the buzzard collectors on them they collect fuel from gases and other stuff in space it is most useful in warp because it could really add up ships could technically run indefinitely as long as there's those tiny little atoms in the vacuum of space that you can collect to use as fuel!
Absolutely fantastic! I'm speechless!! Perfect music score along with the encounter and battle scene. The backwards warp chase and the point blank phaser blast won it for me. Thank you so much for doing this right. 😀
I kinda neglect they can do that, it would seem like a really important thing to do rather than turn around, like some episodes weve seen. Wait... Can they go sideways too??

He didn't want to seem aggressive to another species but when the radiation from the cube was nearing the tolerance level Kirk had no choice but to destroy the cube
Absolutely love this! Especially keeping the TOS fact that Enterprise can reverse at warp speeds. Something we never saw in any other Star Trek iteration, I recall.
When I was little (born in 1989), my country only started broadcasting Star Trek and I only knew TMP, TWOK and TSFS. Then came S1 and S2 of TNG... and the Borg. And I didn't like the Borg. Then came the last three "Kirk" movies, Generations... and The First Conctact... And I became terrified of the Borg. And then I got my hands on book adaptations of TOS by James Blish... and I remember reading in The Corbomite Maneuver, how the Enterprise encountered "cube-shaped vessel" ... I skipped this story/episode and didn't touch it for 2 years, when TOS was finally broadcasted and I was more grown up... imagine my surprise at seeing Balok, especially his true form :D
Well done! I love how you make ships feel like they have mass, having enterprise coming out of warp and going askew. Seems like something that would happen.
This is mindblowing🎉New sub here. Just like the cube encounter would be like if watching from space! Request: Would love to see that first encounter with Balok’s Phasarius🖖🏻
The USS Enterprise was an intruder into First Federation territory and was lucky that Balok was nothing but a mannequin operated by some kind of lonely space kid! But I like the updated version you've done. It's amazing!
Years ago when this episode was having it's special effects modified, someone should have come up with the idea of inserting an exterior view of the Enterprise in reverse warp similar to this video.
Thank you. The cube appeared truly alien and truly scary! The enterprise looked better than ever, and the feeling was foreboding... Magnificent achievement.
This and the Doomsday Machine are two in my top 5 favorite episodes. Another one is "The Immunity Syndrome", these probably make up my top 3. The latter used to keep me up at night as a child, thinking that space amoeba was going to come to Earth.
Great effects that captured the exterior tension when the episode only showed us the interior. The raw footage of the original episode must have been so dull in dailies. Insert that brilliant music and everything just comes alive.
I'll bet they could, or at least a lot of it, but it would have cost more money. It seems to be that on some of those remastered episodes they did the bare minimum, and it looked that way.
the star field is probably as close to what it would look like traveling through deep space. the emptiness, vastness and loneliness of a spacecraft traveling out there is captured in this production.
Of all the videos you've produced, this is by far your best by a huge margin. I'm not seeing your other videos aren't wonderful, because they are but this one shines like no other. What would be neat to do now is to edit the episode and put these scenes in it. While at the same time, preserving the episode as it was. Although, I think a lot of what we've seen in this video was all shot from the bridge's view screen perspective, So it may not be possible to do that after all. But as a great fictional captain once said: Nicely done.
Outstanding, thank you for the effort. Just one small thing: the cube was measured at 107 meters or roughly one-third the size of USS Enterprise. The original miniature shots, the recent CGI replacements and this presentation show the cube far smaller than this, perhaps 15 meters on each face.
I mean it's surely perfectly possible for any starship to do this, but the deflector is on the front so it's super dangerous, you'd just get smashed to bits if you hit anything ='D
honestly, getting rerecommended this years later... i REALLY do like the Twip of Discovery Era Warp in and out... the Warp HUM in warp from TOS really also fits in
Love it. Very plausible too. This is the very first Star Trek episode I saw a child. Now it's a metaphor of how my ex is still trying to get money from me after our order of child support has expired. The cube being my ex, of course.
That's nice to see rendered like tactical in a video game from outside the parlour of the bridge. For theater the way it was done in 1966 was far more dramatic from just the bridge viewer POV and the cuts to the actors with dramatic face lighting.....however this is exactly what you should be interpolating going on outside.
I was so badass back then.
